Taking photos during Mass is an ‘awful thing’

During his weekly Mass at St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday he said: “The priest says ‘lift up your hearts’. He does not say, ‘lift up your mobile phones to take pictures’. “

In front of tens of thousands of people he added that using smartphones during the prayer service was an “awful” and “very ugly thing”.

Pope Francis said: “It makes me very sad when I celebrate (Mass) here in the piazza or in the basilica and I see so many phones held up.

“Not only by the faithful, but also by some priests and even bishops.

“The Mass is not a show…so remember, no phones”.

His remarks were met with laughter and a round of applause from the big crowd.

According to the Catholic News Service, His call to abandon smartphones during Mass was part of a new series of audience talks on the Mass.

The initiative is aimed at helping people “understand the true value and significance of the liturgy as an essential part of growing closer to God”.

Eight Common Characteristics of Successful Church Revitalizations – Revitalize & Replant #012

SUBSCRIBE TODAY: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio • Google Play

While numbers often show revitalization progress, sometimes there are more subtle indicators that your church is revitalizing. Today, we cover eight of those markers.

Today’s Listener Question:

FROM JARED

I’m currently in the midst of a revitalization effort at the church I pastor here in Alabama. Is there any way to know if we’re making progress other than just looking at changes to the raw numbers?

Episode Highlights:

  • Every church has key lay leaders who influence the people.
  • Church revitalization is not a human-centric effort.
  • The worship time is often a sacred cow in churches.
  • You have to continually remind church members of the vision of a church—even to redundancy.
  • If you want to lead real change in a church, you have to convey a sense of urgency.

The eight successful characteristics we cover are:

  1. The pastor formed an alliance of key influencers in the church
  2. The influencers made a commitment to pray daily for revitalization
  3. The church made a commitment to look like the community
  4. The church boldly confronted the issue of sacred cows
  5. Leadership developed a clear and compelling vision
  6. Leadership communicated a sense of urgency
  7. The pastor was willing to endure a season of intense criticism
  8. The leadership of the church was willing to let go of members

Resources mentioned in this episode include:

Revitalize & Replant is sponsored by the North American Mission Board and ChurchReplanters.com. More than 10%…

Man Who Helped Stop Texas Church Shooter is in Need of Prayer

Man Who Helped Stop Texas Church Shooter is in Need of Prayer

The man who helped stop the gunman in the deadly Texas church shooting earlier this week is in need of prayer.

The town of Sutherland Springs, Texas is Stephen Willeford’s home and the community there is very dear to him. That was why, when he heard the gunshots coming from the First Baptist Church near his home, he grabbed his gun and ran out the door, looking to protect his friends who were inside the church.

Willeford engaged in a gunfight with the shooter, Devin Kelley. He wounded Kelley who then sped off in his vehicle and was later found dead by law enforcement.

Although Willeford initially believed he had killed Kelley, law enforcement later said they believe Kelley died from a self-inflicted shot to the head.

Twenty-six people lost their lives in the shooting, but the death toll would likely have been much higher if not for Willeford’s bravery.

Willeford doesn’t view himself as a hero, but simply as someone through whom the Lord was working in that moment.

“I’m no hero, I am not,” Willeford said, according to The Stream. “I think my God, my Lord, protected me and gave me the skills to do what needed to be done. I just wish I’d gotten there faster.”

Willeford’s friends describe him as a faithful Christian. After the shooting, Willeford was distraught, as were many residents of Sutherland Springs. His friend, John Wood, said he could use…

Prayer plea for captured North Koreans

Believers are being urged to ask God that authorities block moves to deport the group and allow members safe passage to relatives in South Korea.

Chief Executive of the advocacy group, Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Mervyn Thomas told Premier: “This is an urgent call for everybody; what future have any of them [the ten detainees] got if they’re put back into North Korea?”

The ten individuals, who range in age from three-years-old to the 60s, were arrested in the north eastern city of Shenyang last Saturday.

China has followed a policy of repatriating North Korean defectors, despite the risks of punishments awaiting detainees, including torture and execution.

Mervyn Thomas also said: “Even if not actually executed, the conditions of torture and abuse in North Korean detention centres and prison camps are so severe that imprisonment amounts to a death sentence.

“We appeal to China to show humanity and exercise responsibility by allowing these and all other North Korean Refugees safe passage to South Korea or a third country.”

The ten individuals hope to seek resettlement in South Korea, a country which recognises North Koreans as its own citizens.

Mr Thomas added: “As it becomes an increasingly influential world power, China must respect international humanitarian norms.

“Failure to do so renders China directly complicit with North Korea’s crimes against…

The Power of Attitude – by Myles Munroe, OBE

Myles Munroe, OBE (20 April 1954 – 9 November 2014) was a Bahamian Evangelical Christian evangelist and ordained Pentecostal minister who founded and led the Bahamas Faith Ministries International (BFMI) and Myles Munroe International (MMI). He was chief executive officer and chairman of the board of the International Third World Leaders Association and president of the International Leadership Training Institute as well as the author of numerous books.

Church video shows gunman’s murderous rampage

An official said the video is consistent with what witnesses attending the service said about the actions of Devin Patrick Kelley during the massacre which left 26 people dead, eight of them children.

News of the grisly video emerged as authorities released an official list of the dead.

Eight male victims and 17 female victims ranging in age from one to 77 were on the Texas Department of Public Safety list which also includes the unborn baby of Crystal Holcombe, identified on the list as Carlin Brite “Billy Bob” Holcombe, age 0 and gender unknown.

The remaining eight victims were children and teenagers ranging in age from one to 16 years old.

Authorities said one of the children died at a San Antonio-area hospital. The remaining victims all died at the scene.

Details of the dead came after it became clear that authorities missed at least three opportunities that might have offered law enforcement a way to stop Kelley from having access to guns long before he slaughtered much of the congregation in the middle of the service in Sutherland Springs.

Police recovered a Ruger AR-556 rifle at the church and two handguns from the shooter’s vehicle. All three weapons were purchased by Kelley, said Fred Milanowski, the agent in charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Houston.

Kelley, 26, shot himself after a car chase by two local residents.

Take a Peek Inside ‘Luther 1517’ 360 Degree Panorama in Wittenberg

(Photo: The Christian Post)The exterior of the W360 Luther 1517 panorama by artist Yadegar Asisi in Wittenberg, Germany, on October 30, 2017.

WITTENBERG, Germany — A 360 degree panorama exhibit puts on display what the town might have looked like in 1517, marking five centuries since the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

A 15×75 meter circular work constructed a short distance away from the main street in the city made famous by Martin Luther, artist Yadegar Asisi painted the town complete with characters from that time period. Martin Luther appears several times in the panorama along with other Reformation-era figures, Elector Frederick the Wise, the painter Lucas Cranach, Luther’s colleague Philip Melanchton, and Luther’s wife, Katharine von Bora.

Thousands have taken part in the panoramic experience and as visitors walk through the building accompanying music by film composer Eric Babak and sound effects reflecting the era emanate from speakers. Situated in the center of the panorama is an observatory deck where visitors can take it all in.

Camilo Seifert, a self-described “Saxon Lutheran” and the general manager of the W360 panorama, described it in an interview with The Christian Post last week as a “singular experience” that is “a dive into another epoch.”

The Wittenberg panorama will be open for pilgrims and other visitors through Oct. 31, 2021.

Here’s a sneak peek inside the panoramic experience.
