New Christian campaign launched targeting bank fossil fuel investments

Christian Aid has taken a stand after a new ComRes poll found that 80 per cent of public agree it is morally wrong for banks to profit from investments that pollute the environment, while 77 per cent believe banks should be stopped from doing so.

Suzanne Ismail Christian Aid’s Senior Policy Advisor told Premier that it’s an urgent issue.

She said: “We need to act on climate change now. There’s really clear evidence to hear it’s really hurting the world’s poorest people.

“Fossil fuels are the biggest contributions, particularly through the energy sector.”

Former Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, who is also chair of Christian Aid, said: “This year we have seen extreme weather displacing millions of people in South Asia and bringing death and destruction in the Caribbean and the United States.

“These communities count the cost in lives lost.  But British investors, including banks, continue to count profits from just those fossil fuel investments that contribute to climate chaos.”

In light of the new poll numbers, Christian Aid has launched its “Big Shift” campaign.

The charity has contacted more than 25,000 CEOs of the big four high street banks asking them to move their investments out of fossil fuels.

It has also encouraged bank customers to email their banks and do the same.

Last week Barclays announced profit for the year to September of £3.4billion. Lloyds announced…

Pakistani Christian accused of blasphemy dies before trial

Mukhtar Masih, 70, along with his wife, children and grandchildren, were arrested in January following claims by local Muslims from the village of Lambanwali that Mr Masih had written blasphemous messages and pinned them to the door of a local mosque.

Mr Masih was charged and granted bail in May and the British Pakistani Christian Association (BPCA) believed he “had a real chance of overturning his false charges”.

However, on Thursday, he was taken to Bagh Christian Hospital in Mansehra after complaining about abdominal pain and died later that day.

An autopsy declared death by gastro-intestinal bleeding.

The family have raised concerns that his premature death has left them vulnerable and despised by Muslims, despite their insistence that he is innocent.

Mehwish Bhatti, lead officer for the BPCA in Pakistan, said: “It is with great regret that I share this news as we were extremely confident that Mukhtar would be exonerated and that his reputation would once again become unsullied.

“His distraught family have expressed great disappointment that Mukhtar Masih died with charges of blasphemy over his head. We are challenging our local MP’s to call for a posthumous exoneration for a man who did not commit any crime.

“Mukhtar’s only offence was the hurt he apparently caused to Muslims for adhering to the Christian faith.”

Prosperity Gospel Is Latching Onto Evangelical Rise in Brazil Amid Economic Hardship

(Photo: Reuters/Caetano Barreira)Evangelical Protestantism followers pray in the Renascer em Cristo church in Sao Paulo, Brazil, May 2, 2007.

Prosperity gospel preaching, where charismatic leaders are offering people solutions to their economic troubles, is latching ionto the growing evangelical movement in Brazil, a nation which observers say is undergoing significant spiritual shifts.

Pastor Bob Robbins of the evangelical English-speaking Sampa Church in Sao Paulo responded to a recent article in The Washington Post documenting such shifts by telling The Christian Post that Brazilians face many different spiritual influences.

“I think the biggest thing influencing the prosperity gospel in Brazil is the lack of hope and the struggling economy,” Robbins, who alongside his wife, Martha, has been involved in church planting in the U.S. since 1999, told CP in an email Thursday.

“If a charismatic person can say that they have a solution for people’s struggles they can get an audience. I am not sure that I can say the prosperity gospel is on the rise, but it is present and has a pretty large influence,” he added.

The Washington Post article published Tuesday positioned that Brazil is going through a “modern-day version of the Protestant Reformation 500 years ago,” and said…

Are Christians the most persecuted faith on earth?

Sunday is the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. Why do we need such a day?Sunday is the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. Why do we need such a day?

In The Global War on Christians, John Allen calls the worldwide persecution of Christians “the most dramatic religion story of the early twenty-first century, yet one that most people in the West have little idea is even happening.” The respected journalist describes this persecution as “the most compelling Christian narrative of the early twenty-first century.” According to him, “Christians today indisputably are the most persecuted religious body on the planet.”

What evidence does Allen offer for his claim?

The scope of persecution

According to the evangelical group Open Doors, one hundred million Christians face interrogation, arrest, torture, and/or death because of their religious convictions. Todd Johnson of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary documents that one hundred thousand Christians, eleven per hour, have been killed on average every year of the past decade. The Catholic humanitarian group Aid to the Church in Need describes this global assault on believers as “a human rights disaster of epic proportions.”

While 30 percent of the world’s population identifies as Christian, 80 percent of all acts of religious discrimination around the world are directed at Christians. One scholar estimates that 90 percent of all people killed on the basis of their religious beliefs are Christians.

Terrorist attacks against Christians escalated 309 percent between 2003 and 2010. There have been seventy million martyrs since the time of Christ, forty-five million of them in the twentieth century. In other words, more Christians died for their faith in the last century than in the previous nineteen centuries combined.

Persecution and Islam

Persecution against Christians is especially prevalent in the Muslim world. According to Newsweek, “In recent…

What Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?

(Photo: Reuters/Lucy Nicholson)Children walk into the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica, California, October 4, 2014.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic disorder, which means it can affect one person throughout his or her life. It is one of the most common conditions that are usually noticed during early childhood.

Symptoms of ADHD

Some of the typical ADHD symptoms include impulsiveness, inattentiveness, fidgeting, becoming easily distracted, forgetfulness and hyperactivity. Symptoms are often noticed at an early age and may become more obvious once a child’s situation changes (i.e., starting school). Cases are often diagnosed when kids are age six to 12 years.

Although ADHD symptoms usually improve as the child ages, many adults who are diagnosed at a young age may continue to experience issues. Those suffering from ADHD are likely to have other problems as well, such as anxiety and sleep disorders.

ADHD in Children

Based on a new research conducted in Finland, youngest kids in school are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD. Children who show greater immaturity compared with their other classmates may be diagnosed with the behavioral condition.

The study claims younger girls are 31 percent more likely to be diagnosed, compared with boys who are 26 percent likely to be told they have ADHD.

“Teachers and parents may misattribute a child’s immaturity,” said lead author Professor Kapil Sayal from the University of Nottingham. “This might lead to younger children in the class being more likely to be referred for an assessment for ADHD,” he added.

ADHD in…
