Our Daily Bread 2 November 2017 Devotional – Living Anonymously

Topic: Living Anonymously — Thursday November 2, 2017.

Read: Romans 12:1–13, Bible in a Year: Jeremiah 27–29; Titus 3

Let us have real warm affection for one another as between [family]. Romans 12:10

My well-worn and often-read copy of Jane Yolen’s essay “Working Up to Anon” (Anonymous) was clipped from The Writer magazine many years ago. “The best writers,” she says, “are the ones who really, in their heart of hearts, aspire to the byline Anon. The story told is important, not the storyteller.”

The story we tell is about Jesus, the Savior, who gave His life for us. Together with other believers we live for Him and share His love with others.

Romans 12:3–21 describes the attitude of humility and love that should permeate our relationships with each other as followers of Jesus. “Don’t cherish exaggerated ideas of yourself or your importance, but try to have a sane estimate of your capabilities by the light of the faith that God has given to you all. . . . Let us have real warm affection for one another as between [family], and a willingness to let the other [person] have the credit” (vv. 3, 10 J.B. Phillips New Testament).

Pride in our past accomplishments can blind us to the gifts of others. Arrogance can poison the future.

John the Baptist, whose mission was to pave the way for Jesus, said, “He must become greater; I must become less” (John 3:30).

That’s a good motto for us all.

Prayer: I admit, Lord, that I have a lot to learn about humility. Help me to see You for who You are so You and others have their rightful place in my life.

Always be humble before God and allow Him to be your all in all. Oswald Chambers

Insight:

In the letter to the church at Rome, Paul was writing to Jesus-followers he had never met and was one day hoping to visit (see Rom. 1:8–11). In this message he challenged them to serve with humility and love.

We have an interesting story, well told, from .. . charismapodcastnetwork.com.

Last night, 15,000 people showed up for Water of Life Community Church’s annual Trunk-or-Treat festival in Fontana, California. People dressed in costumes, half a million pieces of candy were given out and children played carnival games. As a church outreach event, it was a home run. But it was…

Why people are more likely to defend their hamburger than another person

People are nearly eight times more likely to stand up for their hamburger than the harassed stranger sitting at the table next to them. That’s according to a recent test from Burger King where the fast food giant used adolescent actors to stage a scene where a young man was bullied by a group of teens in one of their stores. At the same time, the cooks “bullied” a number of hamburgers before wrapping them up and delivering them to the same group of patrons.

Of those who received a smashed hamburger, 95 percent took it back and complained, often with great anger, about the state of their dinner. By comparison, a sparse 12 percent stepped in to intervene on behalf of the young man who was bullied, or even simply checked on him after the incident ended.

Perhaps the only thing more disheartening than the results of that survey is that it probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise. People have long preyed upon the weak around them, and history demonstrates that it’s relatively rare for people to step in when they don’t have a personal stake in the matter. Sadly, that’s often just as true for Christians as it is for everyone else.

To those whose lives are to be modeled after Christ, such a state of cowardice in the face of oppression, whether or not we are the ones being oppressed, should be just as repugnant as the sins of those perpetrating the heinous acts. Much of Jesus’ ministry was spent standing up for those his culture mistreated and showing mercy for the people who often knew little more than judgment. In one of Craig Denison’s First15 devotionals, he examined just such an example from the life of Christ.

In John 8:2–11, the religious leaders bring a woman caught in adultery before Jesus. They cited Moses’ command that a woman caught in adultery should be stoned and asked Jesus his opinion on the matter. It is a story I have read and studied before, but God opened my eyes to see it in a new light through the context of…

In New Book, Former ‘New York Times’ Supreme Court Reporter Glories in Pro-Choice Bias .

Former “New York Times” Supreme Court Reporter Linda Greenhouse (YouTube )

We’ve reposted Tim Graham of Newsbusters’ analysis of the career of former New York Times Supreme Court reporter Linda Greenhouse through the prism of a review of her new book written by Washington Post book critic Carlos Lozada.

I was so intrigued I went to Lozada’s review of Just a Journalist: On the Press, Life, and the Spaces Between. Sure enough, he was a little bit hard—not nearly as hard as he should have…

Georgia School District Bans Coach from Praying with Football Team

Georgia School District Bans Coach from Praying with Football Team

A Georgia school district has told a high school football coach and other employees in the district that they cannot participate in student-led prayer.

“Representatives of the school cannot participate in any student initiated/student led prayer or worship while acting in their official capacity,” a legal memorandum written by Coweta County school board attorney Nathan Lee that was passed on to employees at all district schools on Monday, reads.

The directive comes after the Freedom From Religion Foundation filed a complaint against coach-led prayer.

The complaint included a picture of football coach John Small where he was praying with his team. FFRF legal fellow Christopher Line said Small’s praying with his time violates the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

“Coach Small’s conduct is unconstitutional because he endorses and promotes his religion when acting in his official capacity as a school district employee,” Line’s letter said. “Certainly, he represents the school and the team when he acts in his official role as Head Coach of the [East] Coweta High School football team. Therefore, he cannot lead his team in prayer and he cannot organize or advocate for students to lead team prayer either.”

The FFRF said they were happy with the school district’s decision.

“We appreciate the district’s swift action to address the violation and its…

NewSpring Church Founder Perry Noble Announces Divorce From Wife of 17 Years, Asks for Prayers

(Photos: NewSpring Church)NewSpring Church in South Carolina its founding pastor, Perry Noble (inset).

Popular founder of NewSpring Church in South Carolina, Perry Noble, who was fired in July 2016 for alcohol abuse and other “unfortunate choices and decisions,” announced Wednesday that after 17 years of marriage he is getting a divorce from his wife, Lucretia.

In a statement shared with The Christian Post through his publicist, Hunter Frederick, Perry said he “never imagined” himself in this position.

“This is one of the most difficult things I’ve ever communicated and I understand it will be even more difficult for many of you to read. After being married for 17 years I have found myself in a place I never imagined I would be — as no one who has ever been married ever dreams in a million years that their marriage will one day end in divorce,” Perry wrote.

“However, that is where I find myself at this point in time. I am doing my best to walk through this deeply personal and painful process with as much grace as possible,” he continued before asking that the privacy of his family be respected at this time.

“I would ask for your prayers in this season as well as [I] humbly ask for privacy for my family in this matter as we work through this deeply personal situation,”…

‘It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’ is a Metaphor for Faith

‘It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’ is a Metaphor for Faith

Many of us are familiar with the scene from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” in which Linus explains what Christmas is all about and quotes from the book of Luke. That scene and the message of the beloved movie has caused many Christians to support it.

Not nearly as much love is given to “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” the Peanuts Halloween classic, but you may be surprised to learn that this movie also contains Christian themes.

The classic Peanuts Halloween movie is all about Linus’ faith in The Great Pumpkin. As RelevantMagazine.com notes, at one point in the movie, Linus even explains how The Great Pumpkin chooses which pumpkin patch to visit:

“He’ll come here because I have the most sincere pumpkin patch and he respects sincerity.”

Later, he reiterates the same idea: “Each year the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch he thinks is the most sincere. … I don’t see how a pumpkin patch can be more sincere than this one. You can look all around and there’s not a sign of hypocrisy … nothing here but sincerity as far as the eye can see.”

The website entiregospel.com explains the message Charles Schulz, the creator of Peanuts, was communicating through “The Great Pumpkin.”

“Linus’ belief is one of the most common beliefs about religion: it does not matter what a person believes in. As long as they are sincere in…
