‘Unbelief’ and ‘Comfortable’ Christianity Fueling Millennial Interest in Occult, Astrology, Pastors Say

(Image: Edward Henry Corbould)

Millennials are increasingly exploring and turning to occultic spirituality and astrology, as statistics continue showing rising numbers of “nones,” those who do not identify with any particular faith. This is in part due to a mindset of fear and unbelief and comfortable Christianity, some pastors say.

Market Watch reported Monday that the psychic services industry grew 2 percent between the years of 2011 and 2016, an industry now worth approximately $2 billion. Also in recent years, according to Pew, the percentage of people ages 18-29 who “never doubt the existence of God” dropped from 81 percent in 2007 to 67 percent in 2012.

Pastors who spoke with The Christian Post believe the lack of spiritual power and a “comfortable” Christianity in the Church has created a vacuum of sorts, and a mindset of fear has constricted the real power of the Holy Spirit.

“Though some churches do explore the mystical realities of the spiritual realm, they are often marginalized due to misunderstandings or possible lack of biblical integrity,” said Wanda Alger, field correspondent with Intercessors for America and a pastor at Crossroads Community Church in Winchester, Virginia, in a CP interview Thursday.

“At the same time, the devil can’t do anything new.”

Prayer plea for children as Kenya awaits election results

Opposition supporters boycotted the election and clashed with police, forcing authorities to postpone voting in some areas.

Henry Makiwa, from the Christian charity World Vision UK told Premier that staff were in touch with a representative in the East African country and he asked that people pray for the nation.

He said: “This political process and the reports we are getting on violence is not so good and doesn’t bode well for the future, safety and protection of the children of Kenya.”

A source said one person was killed in the opposition stronghold of Kisumu County, another in Homa Bay in the west, and the third in Athi River town outside the capital, Nairobi.

Authorities have postponed voting in several counties until Saturday because tear gas, burning barricades and gangs of young people preventing voting in some towns.

However, Mr Makiwa told Premier young people shouldn’t be held responsible for violence in the country.

He explained: “At the core of our work is the children themselves who are very often, never the cause of violence – especially of a political nature but always the victims.”

While most of Kenya was peaceful, voter turnout was relatively low even in some regions considered to be strongholds for President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was declared the winner of an 8th August election that later was nullified by the Supreme Court.

Opposition leader Mr Raila Odinga, whose legal challenge to the…

Research Reveals 65 Percent of Baby Food Products Contain Arsenic

REUTERS/Arnd WiegmannA woman holds a jar of baby food in a supermarket in Bonn, Germany, February 3, 1998.

A nonprofit organization has discovered that leading brands of baby food products contain a high amount of arsenic and other contaminants that can affect the motor and cognitive skills of developing infants.

Clean Label Project, a nonprofit advocacy group for transparent labeling, tested more than 530 baby food products used in the past five months. With the help of Nielsen data, it was revealed that top-selling and emerging brands contain arsenic and other contaminants in them.

Of the 530 baby food products subjected to test, 65 percent was found positive for arsenic, 36 percent for lead, 58 percent for cadmium, and 10 percent for acrylamide. The research also revealed that the top offenders are the popular brands, such as Gerber, Enfamil, Plum Organics and Sprout, all of which only garnered a 2/5 score from Clean Label Project’s report card due to the presence of toxic metals in their products.

According to Jennifer Lowry, a pediatrician and toxicologist at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, the presence of the said chemicals in the tested products pose a threat on the fine motor and cognitive skills of babies. Arsenic, for instance, which was revealed to be present in 80 percent of baby formula samples that were tested, is associated with developmental defects, cardiovascular disease, neurotoxicity, diabetes and even cancer.

Jaclyn Bowen, executive director of Clean Label Project and a food safety scientist, pointed out that most baby food products containing high…

Pastor joins call for childhood criminal record overhaul

A new House of Commons report suggested some sexual or violent offences committed under the age of 18 should not always be automatically flagged up in checks.

MPs said the current approach is hindering access to employment, education, housing, insurance and visas for travel for large numbers of people.

Pastor Philip Noel from Jesus House in London counsels young people, and some have criminal records.

He told Premier that difficulties to secure jobs and housing sometimes drive them back to crime.

He explained: “Society’s not allowing the youth to forget their past.

“The youth don’t actually forgive themselves and the circle of friends that have wide open arms are the friends that were in the crimes in the first place.”

MPs have called for a major overhaul of the regime, saying it undermines youth justice principles and may fall short of the UK’s international obligations.

Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, individuals are not required to divulge past convictions and cautions once they have become “spent” – meaning a certain period of time has passed.

But there are some circumstances when disclosure can be requested, and employers are required to carry out checks when hiring people for certain roles such as work with children or vulnerable adults.

Pastor Noel told Premier: “I’ve witnessed many of them have put lies on their CV to actually get in front of an employer in the first place.

“The majority of the time the outcome is not good. So they’re…

Why you need to see ‘Same Kind of Different As Me’

It’s unusual to meet the authors of a best-selling book that becomes a major movie. But that’s what happened for my wife and me after Same Kind of Different As Me was published and became a cultural phenomenon.

Janet arranged an evening at the Dallas church we pastored for Ron Hall and Denver Moore to discuss their book with our congregation. Before they met, Hall was a successful art dealer in Ft. Worth, while Moore was homeless. According to Ron, their first encounter didn’t go well: “After he threatened to kill everybody in the room, I tried to avoid him.”

Their transformational friendship became the subject of their book and now a movie starring Academy Award-nominated actors Greg Kinnear and Djimon Hounsou and Academy Award-winning actress Renee Zellweger. I saw the film last night and urge you to see it and to encourage your pastor, congregation, and everyone else you know to see it. It is one of the most powerful and profound movies I’ve ever experienced.

I won’t give away the plot of this amazing true story. Rather, I’d like to think with you about a reality that Same Kind of Different As Me makes clear. Brennan Manning makes my point better than I can: “God loves you as you are, not as you should be, since no one is the person they should be.”

Let’s explore his assertion in reverse order.

“No one is the person they should be”

We are each made in God’s image and likeness (Genesis 1:27). However, we have each sinned and fallen short of our Creator’s glory (Romans 3:23). This conflict between our intended nature and our fallen nature triggers a great disruption in our souls.

We know who we should be, but we also know that we are not who we should be.

So, we create what psychologists call an “idealized self,” the person we wish we were. We learn to project this person to other people. Many live behind this facade for so long that it becomes who they believe themselves to be.

But this false self not only hides…

Devout Christian lawfully thrown off course over ‘anti-gay remarks’, says judge

Felix Ngole, of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, said he was expressing a traditional Christian view and complained that university bosses unfairly stopped him completing a postgraduate degree.

But Deputy High Court judge Rowena Collins Rice has ruled that university bosses acted within the law following a High Court trial in London.

Mr Ngole had argued that his rights to freedom of speech and thought, enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights, had been breached.

But lawyers representing the university argued that he showed ”no insight” and said the decision to remove him from the course was fair and proportionate.

They said Mr Ngole had been studying for a professional qualification, adding that university bosses had to consider his fitness to practise.

Judge Collins Rice said freedom of religious discourse was a public good of great importance.

But she said social workers had considerable power over the lives of vulnerable people and said trust was a precious professional commodity.

She said that after weighing the facts of this case she decided to dismiss Mr Ngole’s claim for judicial review.

Mr Ngole posted comments two years ago, when in his late 30s, the judge had been told.

He was taking part in an debate on a Facebook page about Kim Davis, a state official in the US state of Kentucky, who refused to register same-sex marriages.

Mr Ngole said he had argued that Mrs Davis’s position was based on the “Biblical view of same-sex marriage as a sin”.

    He…
