Pope Francis proclaims 35 new saints including 33 martyrs

[ad_1]

Thirty of the saints proclaimed on Sunday are martyrs, including priests and lay people, who suffered anti-Catholic persecution in 1645 at the hands of Dutch Calvinists in Brazil.

Three more were children in 16th-century Mexico who were martyred for embracing the Catholic faith and refusing to return to their ancient conditions.

The remaining two saints were a priest in Spain in the last century and an Italian priest who died in 1739.

Francis, who became pontiff in 2013, has repeatedly paid tribute to Christians suffering or dying for their faith in current times, especially in the Middle East.

Memorise: For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. – Hosea 6:6

Read: Psalm 51:12-18 (KJV)

12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.

Bible in One Year: Galatians 1-3, Daniel 8:1-14, Hymn: Sing Hymn 14 – Take My Life

MESSAGE:

Going to church is not same as knowing God. There are many people in church today whose lifestyles do not reflect having any experiential knowledge of who God is. Furthermore, being involved in church activities is not the same as loving God. If you love God, it will show in the way you conduct the affairs of your life. God is a merciful God who desires the prosperity of His children, and He is in search of hearts that are longing for Him. God is calling us into an intimate knowledge of His son and His attributes. If you know God, the evidence will be seen in the way you relate with people around you. This includes your colleagues in the office as well as your neighbours at home. If your lifestyle does not match with God’s word, no matter how much you give to Him or the activities you engage in to impress Him, you will not find favour in His sight. The words of 1 Samuel 15:22 are very clear:

“…Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.”

Coming up next: Open Heavens 17 October 2017: Tuesday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – Enjoying The Services Of Angels

Some time ago, at a gathering of God’s people at the Redemption Camp, I had to tell everyone there that if you know you are not genuinely saved by the blood of the Lamb, there is no need to give any offering to God. God will not accept the offerings of sinners. It is an abomination before Him (Proverbs 15:8). Our lives must count for God first, before other things can follow suit.

God wants us to obey His voice and follow His word for our lives. He wants His children to all be true people who impact the lives of others positively. Living a godly life is all that God desires from us. When we live according to His standards, He will be pleased with all that we have to offer. Morality and rituals cannot grant us access to the mercy of God. Before the prodigal son could receive mercy, he had to come to his senses and amend his ways by going back to his father. God is longing for those who will praise Him in spirit and in truth. He is desperate for those who will magnify Him not for what they can get from Him but for who He is. Do you know that you can come before God with big offerings and yet stir up His anger? This will not be your lot in Jesus’ Name. No amount of sacrifice from us can equal His sacrifice for us. The scope of this sacrifice can be seen in these words of Romans 8:32:

“He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?”

Key Point: Obedience is better than sacrifice

Christian printing company turns down transgender business

[ad_1]

Nigel Williams from Southampton said he would be prepared to do work for Joanne Lockwood, but refused to do work for her business, SEE Change Happen.

According to the business’s website, it specialises on “equality, diversity and inclusion advice and services to organisations and business” with its primary focus is on LGBT+ support.

The Christian Institute, which is supporting Williams, said he and Joanne Lockwood met for the first time at a weekly business event on 5th September, in which Williams spoke to attendees about his Christian faith.

The charity said the two met for the second time at the same business event on 26th September and later that day, Williams received an email from Lockwood enquiring about a possible order for a “business venture promoting a particular model of diversity”.

Williams declined her request via email because he did not want to promote a cause which he believes may marginalise Christians.

According to The Times, Lockwood has been living as a trans woman since January  and was “gobsmacked” at his reply.

She told the paper: “I was not expecting a lecture. I disbelieved this could happen in 2017. I have been distraught and cried and my wife consoled me.”

A spokesman for the Christian Institute said: “For years we’ve warned of growing hostility towards people with mainstream Christian views. The terms ‘equality’, ‘diversity’ and ‘tolerance’ have been twisted out of all recognition in an attempt to marginalise, shame and punish Christian people.

“Nigel Williams made it crystal clear that he would be prepared to do work for Jo Lockwood. Indeed, his email said: ‘I am very happy to print for you’. However, he was not prepared to do work for a business that actively promoted a cause which might impact negatively on those with a Christian faith’ ”.

The Christian Institute has called this situation “chilling” and “unnecessary”.

The charity pointed out that the dispute is similar to that of Christian-owned Ashers Baking Co., which went to court after declining to decorate a cake with a pro same-sex marriage campaign slogan.

Aidan O’Neill, leading barrister for the case, said such disputes open “the floodgates” for more, citing a Christian baker refusing to take an order to make a cake celebrating Satanism, and a printing company run by Roman Catholics declining an order to produce adverts calling for abortion on demand to be legalised.

He said: “It is a fundamental tenet of free speech and freedom of belief that people should not be forced to help promote causes flatly contrary to their own deeply-held views.”

Premier has asked SEE Change Happen for a comment.

New pilgrimage route to be launched in Scotland

[ad_1]

As one of five long distance Pilgrim Ways currently under development in Scotland, the Forth to Farne Way will take modern-day pilgrims along pathways and through places linked to Christianity’s earliest days in Scotland.

Several of the ancient Celtic saints are connected to places along the Forth to Farne Way including St Baldred, St Cuthbert, St Aidan and St Ebba.

Lord Wilson of Tillyorn, Patron of the Scottish Pilgrim Routes Forum and former Lord High Commissioner of the Church of Scotland, will formally open the new route at a service in St Mary’s Parish Church, Whitekirk.

Cove Harbour near Cockburnspath

Rev Joanne Evans-Boiten, Minister of Athelstaneford, Whitekirk and Tyninghame, who initiated the effort to develop the new route, said Whitekirk is one of many sites along the route that attracted pilgrims in the late Middle Ages.

She added: “Thousands of people came to Whitekirk because of a very famous holy well. That is why we have such a large church in such a small place.

“The story is that Agnes Countess of Dunbar had sustained injuries defending Dunbar castle when it was under siege. She visited a hermit living near Whitekirk and he told her to go to the holy well and drink the water.

“After visiting the well the Countess was healed and she went on to put up a chapel here that became famous throughout Europe. We have a record of the story written by one of the pilgrims who visited here and who later in his life became Pope Pius II.

“After the Reformation people changed their ideas about pilgrimages and holy places so Whitekirk was no longer considered an important place to visit. Sadly we don’t now know where the well was. We have looked but so far no-one has managed to find it. Maybe it will be rediscovered in the future.”

Pilgrims at Old St Andrews Kirk North Berwick

In medieval times pilgrims travelled the coastal route from Lindisfarne to St Andrews crossing the Firth of Forth by ferry from North Berwick.

The 72-mile pilgrim route follows parts of three well-marked designated footpaths: the John Muir Way, and the Berwickshire and Northumberland coastal paths.

A steering group of local volunteers has identified 11 stages that vary from 2 miles to 13 miles where they hope to site waymarkers and support services.

Currently chaired by Jimmy McGuinnes, the group has also produced a leaflet about the route and a booklet that tells the stories of the saints.

Nick Cooke, secretary of the Scottish Pilgrim Routes Forum SCIO praised the volunteers who have been working to develop the Forth to Farne Way for the last three years.

He added: “The next stage will be to develop waymarking and interpretation to tell the stories of these special places as well as provide accommodation for pilgrim walkers making this journey.”

Among the many places of interest along the route are: St Abbs harbours, the Scottish Seabird Centre, Preston Mill, Fast Castle, Lindisfarne causeway and Priory and St Andrews Kirk in North Berwick.

Ex-Vatican hospital chief convicted over cash used to refurbish cardinal’s flat

[ad_1]

The original charges against Giuseppe Profiti had been embezzlement, but the court convicted him of a lesser offence of abuse of office after the defence argued the money was intended as an investment to benefit the hospital.

Profiti was given a one-year suspended sentence.

The three-judge tribunal cleared Bambino Gesu Paediatric Hospital’s former hospital treasurer, Massimo Spina.

Former Vatican’s Bambino Gesu’ hospital president Giuseppe Profiti, second from right, and former treasurer Massimo Spina, right, listen to the reading of the verdict during the last hearing of their trial in the Vatican Law Court, Saturday Oct. 14, 2017.

Notably, neither the cardinal who benefited from the renovation nor the contractor who was apparently paid twice for doing the work was charged.

More than anything, the trial exposed how Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican’s former secretary of state, bent rules to get his retirement apartment ready after Pope Francis was elected in 2013 and named a new secretary of state.

It also revealed the “opacity, silence and poor management” in the handling of Vatican assets, prosecutor Roberto Zanotti said in his closing statements.

A lack of financial transparency and accountability has bedevilled the Holy See for centuries and has been a top concern for Francis’ reform-minded papacy.

In addition, the trial shined further light on Bambino Gesu hospital, which was the subject of an Associated Press investigation earlier this year.

Former Vatican’s Bambino Gesu’ hospital president Giuseppe Profiti, right, and former treasurer Massimo Spina, second from right, listen to the reading of the verdict during the last hearing of their trial in the Vatican Law Court, Saturday Oct. 14, 2017.

The news agency uncovered a secret 2014 Vatican-authorised probe that found that the hospital’s mission under the Profiti administration had become “more aimed at profit” than patient care.

After retiring in 2013, Cardinal Bertone was assigned a 4,305 sq ft top-floor bachelor pad in the Vatican-owned Palazzo San Carlo, which sits on the edge of the Vatican gardens and offers fabulous views of St Peter’s Basilica and overlooks the hotel where Francis lives.

During the trial, Cardinal Bertone was shown to have personally engineered the unprecedented manoeuvre to get an old friend, Gianantonio Bandera, to do the renovation.

Cardinal Bertone’s project jumped the queue for Vatican property repairs and avoided the normal external bidding process required for such an expensive overhaul – presumably because he promised to foot the bill himself.

And Cardinal Bertone did pay some 300,000 euros (£269,000) out of his own pocket.

The problem is the hospital foundation also paid Mr Bandera’s firm 422,000 euro for a job that totalled 533,000 euro, including communal repairs to the palazzo’s leaky roof.

In closing arguments on Saturday, Profiti’s lawyer Antonello Blasi insisted there was no crime in using foundation money as an investment since Profiti intended to use Cardinal Bertone’s apartment for fund-raising events for the hospital.

“Investing is not the same thing as spending,” Mr Blasi told the court.

Profiti, for his part, told the court the only reason the operation did not return the investment was because the new administration that replaced his had a “new style of fund raising” and did not use the apartment.

Prosecutors did not dispute the investment motive for Profiti’s actions.

In the end, Mr Bandera’s firm, Castelli Re, went bankrupt, and the hospital’s 422,000 euro were sent instead to another Bandera company located in Britain, Lg Contractors.

That was presumably the transaction that tripped up the Vatican’s financial regulators, who were called to give evidence at trial but declined to provide details, citing the need to keep their intelligence-gathering operations secret.

The only hint of a potential pay-off involved a proposed six-figure “donation” from Mr Bandera to the hospital foundation.

Profiti said he “didn’t exclude” that he had sought such a donation, and Mr Spina said he tried to get the money out of Mr Bandera.

Mr Bandera, however, pleaded financial hardship after his company went bankrupt and never paid up.

Neither Cardinal Bertone nor Mr Bandera were indicted in the case, though it is possible prosecutors in the Vatican and Italy now have the evidence they need to mount a case against the builder over the allegation he was paid twice for the same work.

At the trial, Mr Bandera said he never billed twice for the works, though acknowledged he was no longer fully in control of the company after it went bankrupt in early 2014.

Cardinal Bertone has insisted he knew nothing of the hospital’s payment.

After the scandal came to light in late 2015, he quickly made a 150,000 euro (£134,000) “donation” to the hospital, insisting it was not a payback but a gesture of goodwill.

Open Heavens For TEENS: Sunday 15 October 2017 by Pastor Adeboye - Who Is Your Role Model?

Topic: Who Is Your Role Model? [Sunday 15, October 2017]

Memorise: “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 11:1

Read: Philippians 3:14-19

14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.

17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.

18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:

19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)

Bible In One Year: Mark 4-5. Hymn: Sing Hymn 3 – Deeper, Deeper in the Love

MESSAGE:

Who is your role model? Show me your role model and I can tell you who you are. In the Bible reading for today, we read about someone who was bold enough to tell his audience to follow him because he was a follower of the Great Master Jesus. He aspired to become like Jesus Christ to the point of no return.

Beloved, who is your role model? We have living role models in the present age; those that are sold to the righteousness attainable only in Christ, those who have not corrupted themselves with the affairs this life. Therefore, beloved, watch out for good role models and pattern your life after them as they do after Christ, don’t pattern your life after secular musicians or actors that live careless lives, they may seem like the interesting bunch now, but if you look closely at their lives, you realize that they are constantly chasing something or running from something. Secretly, they envy us Christians and wish they could live the lives that we live, but they are not bold enough to make the change, that is why you see them come to Church once in a while. The Holy Spirit in your life is your greatest possession, don’t lose Him by copying the wrong people.

Action Point: Look among Christian leaders and find out those living according to Christ’s doctrines. Follow their footsteps.

David Abioye’s Daily 15 October 2017 Devotional – How To Overcome Weariness

David Abioye's Daily 15 October 2017 Devotional - How To Overcome Weariness

Topic: How To Overcome Weariness [Sunday October 15, 2017]

Weariness is satan’s weapon to frustrate the saints from taking their blessings.

It comes when hope seems gone and waiting seems not necessary any longer.

When weariness is not stemed it extends to frustration which in turn can open the door to all kinds of evil.

If you want to escape weariness, tame your utterances.

To dismantle weariness offer strong thanksgiving and praise to God always. Thanksgiving are hardly worn out, thanksgiving naturally wears out the enemy.

DCLM Daily Manna 15 October, 2017 by Pastor Kumuyi – Lot Of The Wicked

Topic: Lot Of The Wicked — Sunday October 15, 2017.

Text: Job 21:22-34

Key Verse: “That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath” (Job 21:30).

Death does not respect any man, as it comes at its own timing. It does not discriminate along social status, economic well-being, financial security, level of education, and numerous other things that matter to men today. While responding to the rebuke of his friends, Job noted that the wicked may prosper but they remain unrecognized by God and unrespected by wise people.

As Judge of all the earth, God will do right. Hell is the lot of every sinner at last, and it makes little difference if one goes singing there, and another sighing. Whether a wicked man dies in a palace or in a dungeon, the worm that dies not and the fire that is not quenched, will be his eternal companions. Thus, differences in this world are meaningless in eternity. Job opposed his friends who argued that the wicked were sure to fall into immediate ruin, and none but the wicked would face such a fate.

On the basis of this principle, they condemned Job as wicked. Like him, no discerning believers should fail to realize that the punishment for sinners is greater in the world to come. The wicked may enjoy great privileges in this life but at death, all is worthless and forgotten. Death should hold no dread for the believer. If anything, we should look forward to it as the beginning of a glorious era with Christ.

Thought for the day: The believer is redeemed to escape the eternal fate of the wicked in hell.

Our Daily Manna October 15, 2017: ODM devotional – Call Yourself To Order!

Our Daily Manna October 15, 2017: ODM devotional – Call Yourself To Order!

Topic: Call Yourself To Order! [Sunday, October 15, 2017]

Basic Scripture: Genesis 3: 1-24

Indeed Aristotle said: “I count him braver who conquers his desires than him who conquers his enemies: for the hardest victory is the victory over self.”Most people cannot control their weight, appetite, temper, sleep, etc, and they blame the devil for that.

You do not always cast out the devil as a solution to problems. For example, concerning food, you make up your mind and say things like: “I will go on a diet plan.” Concerning your spouse, believe and say things like: “I will not beat my wife” or “I will not be disrespectful to my husband again.” These are acts from your God-given powerful human will. You must believe that by the grace of God, you can do all things. You can stop adultery and fornication!

Flee! You can lose some weight again, if you so desire! Control your food intake and exercise regularly! Be disciplined! Remember what made Adam and Eve to lose their inheritance in the garden? Food! What demoted Esau? Food! Heaven is calling you to order today. Whatever you cannot control in your life and ministry is a disorder. Become your own governor and president. It is known that women add weight during pregnancy, but the real test is after delivery. Most women become fat, shapeless and unattractive after delivery.

Reject this! You can look sweet for your husband and enjoy better marital bliss. Arise! Grab discipline and put your life under control. Dear pastor, you can close your services on time. Cut away all unnecessary things and you will experience a new move of heaven. 1 Cor. 14: 40 declare: “Let all things be done decently and in order.” Bring your life back to order! If you have not finished your Bible once, you are not a serious believer at all. Do you know that you can finish the Bible in five hours non-stop? It takes discipline and IT IS POSSIBLE

Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments. And always remember: Servants of Christ must be masters of themselves! You will end this year well! Amen!

If you need deliverance, see your pastor or be at the Manna Mountain this week Sunday 8am (OGUDU) OR 10.30am (Lekki). One-on-One at Lekki this week!

Prayer Points: Take any song of worship as led.

1. Pray over today’s word as led now.

2. Repent from past actions of laziness.

3. I decide to organize and control these areas of my life whether the likes it or not (mention them).

4. Pray seriously on any other matter concerning your life’s/ministry’s progress. Pray about today now! Choose good news!

Seeds of Destiny 15 October 2017 by Pastor Paul Enenche — Supernatural Strength Through Fasting And Praying

Seeds of Destiny 15 October 2017 by Pastor Paul Enenche — Supernatural Strength Through Fasting And Praying

Topic: Supernatural Strength Through Fasting And Praying [Sunday October 15, 2017]

Scripture: But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:31

Thought For The Day: If your strength is not small, you are not permitted to crumble before any battle.

It is clear from Scriptures that God gives power to the faint and imparts strength on those who lack might. The Will of God for His children is to exist in supernatural strength and not in weariness.

A major key to supernatural strength is prayer and fasting. The time of fasting physically is the time of feasting spiritually, this in turn supplies supernatural strength. That was the experience of Elijah in 1 Kings 19:7-8.

Now, what is the necessity of supernatural strength?

1. Supernatural strength is key to victory in battle

Supernatural strength is critical to gaining victory in the battles of life. If your strength is not small, you are not permitted to crumble before any battle (Proverbs 24:10).

2. Supernatural strength is key to speed in life

In 1 Kings 18:46, we see that when God laid His Hand on Elijah, he was imparted with supernatural strength and he gained speed to outrun the horses of Ahab. Imagine a person running faster than a horse. Incredible!

I prophesy the end of delay in your life. Receive the supernatural speed that will guarantee your destiny fulfilment and impart on you the unusual confidence to face the future in Jesus’ Name.

Remember This: If your strength is not small, you are not permitted to crumble before any battle.

Assignments:

1. Ask God for the impartation of supernatural strength in your life.

2. Embark on periodic prayer and fasting in order to gain Divine strength.

Prayer: O LORD, I ask for the renewal of my strength daily. Position me in Your Presence for the impartation of Your strength in my life, Lord in Jesus’ Name.

Daily Reading: Jeremiah 26:1 to 27:22, 2 Thessalonians 3:1 to 18, Psalm 85:1 to 13, Proverbs 25:16.
