A kidnapped U.S.-Canadian couple and their three children born in captivity have been freed in Pakistan, nearly five years after the couple was abducted in neighboring Afghanistan, Pakistani and U.S. officials said on Thursday.

American Caitlan Coleman and her Canadian husband, Joshua Boyle, were kidnapped while backpacking in Afghanistan in 2012 by the Taliban-allied Haqqani network, which the United States has long accused Pakistan of failing to fight.

According to Philly Mag, the couple told friends and family in an email:  “Only God knows exactly where it will lead or what all can be accomplished, seen, experienced or learned while we travel. So we put ourselves in His hands.”

U.S. President Donald Trump, who has been highly critical of Islamabad, praised Pakistan’s cooperation with the U.S. government over the freeing of the hostages, saying it represented “a positive moment” for U.S.-Pakistan relations.

“The Pakistani government’s cooperation is a sign that it is honoring America’s wishes for it to do more to provide security in the region,” Trump said in a statement.

Trump’s chief of staff, John Kelly, drove home the dire conditions that the family had been subjected to during its long captivity.

“They’ve been essentially living in a hole for five years,” Kelly said. “That’s the kind of people we’re dealing with over there.”

It was unclear how precisely the Pakistani military secured the family’s release, which came after the United States shared intelligence about the hostages’ location. It was also unclear when the family would return home.

Two U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that the U.S. military had been ready to fly the family out of the country but said Boyle, who is Canadian, had refused to board the aircraft.

Boyle had once been married to the sister of an inmate at the U.S. military detention center at Guantanamo Bay. The marriage ended and the inmate was later released to Canada. CNN reported he might fear some kind of U.S. legal prosecution.

As of Thursday evening, there was no indication the family had left Pakistan. Boyle’s parents said he told them by phone he would see them in a couple of days.

“So we’re waiting for that,” his mother, Linda Boyle, said in a video posted on the Toronto Star newspaper’s website.

The U.S. officials expressed hope that the hostages’ freedom could represent a turning point in relations between Pakistan and the United States, uneasy allies in fighting Taliban and other Islamist extremists in the region.

In recent days, senior U.S. officials have been more pointed about Islamabad’s alleged ties to militant groups, who are battling against U.S. and U.S.-backed forces in the 16-year-old war in neighboring Afghanistan. The war is at a stalemate.

Pakistan fiercely denies such ties, and it touted the operation as proof of the strength of the alliance.

“The success underscores the importance of timely intelligence sharing and Pakistan’s continued commitment towards fighting this menace through cooperation between two forces against a common enemy,” a Pakistani army statement said.

Franklin Graham Shares What Verse Billy Graham Has on Display in His Home

The Rev. Billy Graham is well-advanced in age. His 99th birthday is coming up next month, but as he grows older, the famous evangelist continues to prioritize Scripture.

Recently, the Rev. Franklin Graham, the elder Graham’s son, shared in a Facebook post that his father has a particular Bible verse displayed all over his North Carolina home.

According to ChristianToday.com, the younger Graham called it his father’s life verse. “Still today, my father Billy Graham has a Bible verse pinned up on the wall in his bedroom, printed in VERY large letters. In fact, it’s in the dining room, his bathroom, and several other spots around the house! Back before his 95th birthday, he was working on a sermon based on this key Scripture. It was his passion to memorize it, to saturate his heart and mind with it. He made it his life verse,” Graham wrote in the recent Facebook post.

The verse, Graham continued, is Galatians 6:14, which reads: “But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”

The younger Graham went on to say that this verse is “a great verse for us to live by.”

The elder Graham will be celebrating his 99th birthday on November 7. Although he has slowed down in his old age, his son says he continues to focus on Scripture and also enjoys visits from family members and close friends.

Ohio United Methodist Congregation Violating Church’s Stance by Hosting LGBT Event?

[ad_1]

(Photo: Facebook/Summit on 16th United Methodist Church)Summit on 16th United Methodist Church, located in Columbus, Ohio.

A theologically liberal United Methodist congregation in Ohio is hosting a pro-LGBT event later this month, having sponsored a similar event in the past.

Summit on 16th United Methodist Church, a Columbus-based congregation that belongs to the LGBT activist group Reconciling Ministries Network, will host the “Come Out, Come Out” event on Oct. 26.

“Summit on 16th UMC is proud to present another year of “COME OUT, COME OUT!” as we celebrate coming out day and allow the LGBTQIA+ community to celebrate openly and honestly in a space that is welcoming to all people,” says the Facebook event page.

“We have an open mic for spoken word, song, dance, jokes, story telling, mime, drag, coming out stories, etc. We are thrilled to have some fabulous special guests including: Mikayla Denise (local drag celebrity), Mr. Teddy Martin (International recording artist), Luster Dela Virgion (drag king icon), Michael Hatcher (local soul singer), and many more!”

Neither Summit UMC nor the West Ohio Annual Conference returned comment to The Christian Post for this story by press time.

The UMC Book of Discipline labels homosexuality “incompatible with Christian teaching” and also prohibits certain financial support for LGBT advocacy.

“[The General Council on Finance and Administration] shall be responsible for ensuring that no board, agency, committee, commission, or council shall give United Methodist funds to any gay caucus or group, or otherwise use such funds to promote the acceptance of homosexuality,” notes the Book of Discipline.

John Lomperis, United Methodist staffer with the theologically conservative Institute on Religion and Democracy, told CP that while he believed the event “appears to be against the spirit of the Book of Discipline,” it is “not against the letter.”

“The Book of Discipline specifically requires all clergy to follow biblical standards for sexual self-control, and forbids any United Methodist pastor from performing or any congregation from hosting a same-sex ‘wedding.’ But there is no indication that these specific, narrow rules will be violated at this event,” explained Lomperis.

Describing the West Ohio Annual Conference as “theologically mixed” with both outspoken liberals and evangelicals, Lomperis also told CP that he believed Summit UMC’s event did not properly welcome people.

“Churches should reach out and welcome all people, including self-identified members of the LGBTQ community. But simply ‘welcoming’ people is useless unless we are very clear on what exactly we are welcoming people into,” said Lomperis.

“If it’s not a transformative life of Christian discipleship and accountable biblical community, then the church is failing to be the church.”

Professor Targets Trump Nominee for Religious Beliefs

Professor Targets Trump Nominee for Religious Beliefs

Raymond Barfield, a professor of pediatrics and Christian philosophy at Duke University, has taken issue with Michael Dourson, President Trump’s nominee for the Environmental Protection Agency’s chemical safety office.

Despite Dourson’s credentials for the position as an environmental health professor in the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine and his title as a “board-certified toxicologist with an international reputation for excellence in environmental risk assessment,” Barfield believes Dourson’s Christian faith will negatively interfere with his potential tasks working for the EPA.

In his work with chemical analysis, Dourson has said that he has found evidence that may support the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin–the famed burial cloth said to have been imprinted with Jesus’ face. Barfield took issue with this conclusion and with other aspects of Dourson’s work.

This incident is reminiscent of another incident which occurred when Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders accused Deputy Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget nominee Russell Vought of being unfit for office due to his Christian beliefs.

Sanders took issue with a response Vought had written to the Wheaton College controversy when former Wheaton Professor Larycia Hawkins had said Christians and Muslims serve the “same God.” In that response, Vought wrote: “Muslims do not simply have a deficient theology. They do not know God because they have rejected Jesus Christ, his Son, and they stand condemned.”

Sanders implied that Vought had made an Islamophobic statement and said, “I would simply say, Mr. Chairman, that this nominee is really not someone who this country is supposed to be about.”

Harvey Weinstein and Hollywood’s Hypocrisy — Charisma News

    [ad_1]

    Producer Harvey Weinstein
    Producer Harvey Weinstein (REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni)

My purpose here is not to throw more stones on the now-disgraced Harvey Weinstein, who is already suffering the consequences of his alleged actions. My purpose is to confront the larger hypocrisy of Hollywood, an industry that has made billions of dollars selling sex, an industry that encourages all kinds of sexploitation.

Let’s put aside the question of whether media giants like NBC initially rejected the Weinstein exposé or whether actors like Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were insincere in their statements against him.

Instead, let’s remember that, for years now, we’ve heard about the “casting couch,” slang for sexual favors aspiring actresses would be expected to show Hollywood execs if they wanted to advance in the industry.

Just look at these headlines, with their dates:

May 31, 2011: “Casting Couch Nightmares: What Does It Take to Make It in Hollywood?”

April 23, 2014: “The Dark Side of Hollywood—10 Casting Couch Horror Stories; RadarOnline looks back at the stars who complained of harassment within industry”

June 20, 2014: “12 Celebrities Reveal Their ‘Casting Couch’ Stories”

And then this one, from Oct. 11, 2017, following the revelations about Weinstein: “Women of Hollywood Tell Their Casting Couch Horror Stories.”

One recent article claims that these sexual abuses in the movie industry date back to the early 1920s. Yes, an AP article published in the Japan Times claims that, “Hollywood’s ‘casting couch’ scandals go back at least to 1921.”

The article begins with this: “For anyone thinking the days of the so-called casting couch were long gone, this past week has been eye-opening. The growing list of women directing allegations at Harvey Weinstein suggests they never left Hollywood.”

The point is that the major players in Hollywood have known about these kinds of things for years, yet most looked the other way. Why? It’s part of the business, and you don’t dare challenge or expose the giants. It will destroy your own career if you do!

Trump Administration Announces it Will Withdraw from UNESCO due to ‘Anti-Israel Bias’

Trump Administration Announces it Will Withdraw from UNESCO due to ‘Anti-Israel Bias’

The Trump administration has announced that it will be pulling the U.S. out of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) due to the organization’s alleged anti-Israel bias and other issues.

USA Today reports that the U.S. will pull out of UNESCO effective next year. According to an official statement released by the State Department: “This decision was not taken lightly, and reflects U.S. concerns with mounting arrears at UNESCO, the need for fundamental reform in the organization, and continuing anti-Israel bias at UNESCO.”

Although this may appear like a major change in world politics, as USA Today notes, it is actually mostly symbolic since the U.S. has not actually funded UNESCO since 2011, after the organization voted to include Palestine.

The history of the U.S.’s involvement with UNESCO has been somewhat tenuous for several decades now. President Reagan withdrew the U.S. from the organization in 1984, but then President George W. Bush brought the U.S. back into the organization in 2002. Funding to UNESCO from the U.S. was cut off under the Obama administration.

A statement from Irina Bokova, the director general of UNESCO said: “At the time when conflicts continue to tear apart societies across the world, it is deeply regrettable for the United States to withdraw from the United Nations agency promoting education for peace and protecting culture under attack.”

A Key to Revival Today? — Charisma News

    [ad_1]

Christopher Columbus’ second voyage to the New World was on the same day as the second blood moon of the 1493-1494 Tetrad. (Pixabay/ulrikebohr570)

This week, the celebrations of Columbus Day and the Feast of Tabernacles overlap each other, reminding us of the launching of Christopher Columbus’ second voyage to the New World, on the same day as the second blood moon of the 1493-1494 tetrad, which occurred on the Feast of Tabernacles.

It was on his second voyage that Columbus had been given the mission and resources to create a Christian society in the New World. The Native American people he found were descendants of ancient Siberian immigrants but had lived in isolation from the rest of mankind for about 3,000 years. Nevertheless, their pyramids, their religions and their culture still contained the stamp of their origins with the rest of mankind in ancient Babylon. Unfortunately, they also retained some of the worst pagan practices of Babylonian religions, as the Aztecs demonstrated by sacrificing 50,000 human victims every year.

Our study of history shows that human sacrifice is a flash point for God’s judgment, and we believe that the Aztec, Inca and other Native American civilizations were judged and destroyed by God through the technology and diseases of the Europeans. Sadly, the conquistadors enslaved the survivors and forced them to “convert” to Christianity, thus losing the opportunity to achieve a real Christian society. Those sins were compounded by bringing in African slaves to replace the decimated populations working the European plantations.

The establishment of a Christian society did finally occur when a small group of English Christians landed in New England. Over time, the English settlers in eastern North America adopted the concept of religious freedom and went on to build the greatest Christian society on earth, the United States. And, despite all its failures, backsliding and flaws, the United States, with its 250 million who claim to be Christians, remains the world’s most powerful beacon of the Christian dream.

Christianity has also flourished in Latin America, thanks to revival and renewal from the Catholic charismatics and the evangelical Christians. Today Latin America is 92.5 percent Christian, the highest proportion of any continent. And the Catholic Church, in recognition of this fact, selected the Cardinal of Buenos Aires, Pope Francis, as its leader.

American Hostages of 5 Years are Freed by Taliban

    [ad_1]

American Hostages of 5 Years are Freed by Taliban

An American woman, her Canadian husband and their three children were rescued on Wednesday after five years in captivity with the Taliban.

Caitlan Coleman, 31, and her husband, Joshua Boyle, 34, were abducted while hiking in Afghanistan’s Ghazni province in 2012.

They were rescued in an exchange between Pakistani military and U.S. commandos on Wednesday in a secret operation.

According to counterterrorism officials, U.S. special operations forces had considered a raid to rescue the family, but the family was moved to another location before being rescued.

“They’re in Pakistan and they are safe,” an official told ABC News.

“We should all celebrate that they are out of the hands of the Taliban. We have secured their release,” the official said.

In a video filmed by the captors and sent to the Coleman families last January, the film shows the couple’s 4-year-old son sitting on his father’s lap. Caitlan is shown with their second child, still an infant at the time. Since the video, a third child has been born.

Boyle says in the video that the conditions of their captivity had improved.

Caitlan added: “I would also like to say to my father specifically, that I think you would like to know that my time in—married, and my time as a mother, and my time in prison that I’ve become more of a Belle than an Ariel.”

Also Wednesday, President Donald Trump made a mention to the rescue when he spoke to a crowd in Pennsylvania.

“America is being respected again. Something happened today, where a country that totally disrespected us called with some very, very important news,” Trump said. “And one of my generals came in, they said, ‘You know, I have to tell you, a year ago they would’ve never done that.’ It was a great sign of respect. You’ll probably be hearing about it over the next few days. But this is a country that did not respect us. This is a country that respects us now. The world is starting to respect us again, believe me.”

Doctors Describe Dangers of Puberty Blockers Used on Children That LGBT Activists Don’t Tell

    [ad_1]

(Screengrab: Facebook/Heritage Foundation)Dr. Michelle Cretella, the president of the conservative American College of Pediatricians, speaks during a panel discussion at the Heritage Foundation office in Washington, D.C. on October 11, 2017. She is joined by Dr. Allen Josephson of the University of Louisville, Heritage Foundation senior fellow Ryan Anderson and Paul Hruz, a professor of pediatrics, endocrinology, cell biology and physiology at the Washington University School of Medicine.

WASHINGTON — Many children and families struggling with gender dysphoria are not receiving the facts about the permanent consequences associated with “experimental” puberty-blocking and sex-reassignment treatments, nor are they being told that justification for such treatments are not backed by strong scientific evidence, doctors warned Wednesday.

“Much of what is being done here can be considered experimental treatment,” Paul Hruz, a St. Louis-based doctor who is a professor of pediatrics, endocrinology, cell biology and physiology at the Washington University School of Medicine, said during a panel discussion on transgender medicine hosted by the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation.

“But that is not how the public is hearing about this and [not] what the patients themselves and the families who are dealing with this issue are being presented with.”

Hruz, who co-authored the June report published in The New Atlantis titled Growing Pains: Problems With Puberty Suppression in Treating Gender Dysphoria, and Dr. Michelle Cretella, the president of the conservative American College of Pediatricians, joined Dr. Allen Josephson of the University of Louisville and Heritage Foundation senior fellow Ryan Anderson to discuss the dangers and long-term consequences linked to the use of hormone therapy and puberty suppression treatments on children.

Although a number of mainstream medical societies and organizations have been  recommending over the last decade that children who suffer from gender dysphoria be given a puberty-blocking drug and later be treated with cross-sex hormones before potential sex reassignment surgeries, Hruz said that “the evidence behind this new treatment paradigm is slim to none.”

“If you are going to take a standard approach to a treatment condition of any sort — not just gender issues, and make that drastic of a change — one would expect that there was a landmark study that was done, a randomized, controlled trial or a series of very important findings that consistently showed that this is a good idea,” Hruz argued. “The reality is there is no science to back this drastic change.”

“What I am saying to you is widely acknowledged by the experts that are putting this forward. I was just at an International Endocrine meeting last month and the new International Endocrine Society guidelines were being presented and the question was asked: ‘What evidence is there that long-term we are doing good for these individuals?'” Hruz explained. “These are the people that put forward these treatment guidelines. The answer was: ‘We have no evidence.'”

Hruz argued that the most reliable evidence about pubertal blockade or hormone therapy only highlights the “complications of therapy.”

As children are beginning to identify as transgender at ages as young as 2 years old, Hruz criticized experts who advocate putting children through a process of pubertal suppression and present it to parents as a “safe and reversible form of intervention.”

“Repeatedly by the experts, this is presented as safe and fully reversible form of intervention. Yet, there is no clear study that was done in this population,” he said. “It is an off-label use of the medication and to make the claim when you have no data is really an injustice not only for our medical profession but for our entire society.”

Hruz highlighted potential difficulties associated with pubertal blockade.

“The claim that it is fully reversible is self-contradictory because what you are doing when you do a pubertal blockade is you are interrupting a normal developmental process,” he explained. “Even if five, six or seven years later you stop that intervention, you cannot go back in time. You have already altered that development. It is incorrect and totally false to say that it is reversible.”
