Christian Post Report – Kong Hee, pastor of City Harvest Church in Singapore, is seen in this undated Facebook profile photo.

City Harvest Church Pastor Kong Hee is sharing what he’s calling a “miraculous healing” testimony of a lawyer in East Malaysia who attended one of his services and has felt long-standing serious pain in his leg fade away.

Although the lawyer himself is careful to state that he is not yet trying to claim that he experienced a miraculous healing, Kong made that point in a post to his Facebook followers, where he introduced the testimony:

“God is working His healing miracles in this week’s East Malaysia mission trip. One lawyer of the High Court in Sabah and Sarawak came to our Tuesday night service and was completely healed.”

Kong, who leads one of Singapore’s largest megachurches, then shared the full testimony by the lawyer, Marcel Jude, who identifies himself as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court in Sabah and Sarawak.

Jude explains that he had been experiencing great pains in his left leg in the joint area since September, and while medical treatment had reduced some of his discomfort, the pain did not go away, forcing him to use a knee guard and restricting many of his physical activities.

He states that he visited a church service last week in Malaysia where Kong was speaking, noting that his main interest at the time was the pastor’s legal troubles — referring to Kong’s eight-year prison sentencing for his part in the misuse of close to $35-million in church donations at CHC.

The lawyer says that he was “amazed” that Kong is continuing his ministry and is even traveling to different countries while he is facing such a serious situation, and says that while he expected to see a man in a somber mood, he saw instead “a man who was totally immersed in the joy of the Lord. He seemed to be the happiest person in the auditorium.”

Jude states: “Bear in mind I am lawyer not easily given to jump to conclusions but always making delayed and impartial assessment of events as any legally trained person would do. There was in him no sadness or regrets or nothing to show the immense burden on his shoulders.”

He says that Kong began to pray for sick people of various kinds at the service, and as a matter of formality, Jude placed his hand on his leg.

“I didn’t expect anything just a routine response when someone prays for the sick at conventions or meetings. We were standing for long periods and I did feel tired but suddenly I felt like some pressure of the pain was gone I touched the area of my leg and it felt like different,” he claims.

“I started moving my leg around and bending it, something I had avoided for nearly six months. There was no knee jerk pain to stop bending or moving. I pulled out the knee guard. I could still feel the sore part where the bone met the skin but it was more like tiredness pain instead of constant pain.”

The lawyer stated that he could immediately begin using the stairs and feel a positive change in his mobility. He concluded that he is continuing to asses his situation, allowing people to form their own conclusions.

“It is now 17th of February 9 and nearly 12 hours since I don’t feel the pain or discomfort in my right leg,” he wrote at the time.

“Notice I have avoided any adjectives or conclusions such as I have been healed or who healed me, etc. I am trying as a lawyer to report facts without drawing conclusions. You can draw your own.”

Billy Graham: Bible Tells Us the Truth About Ourselves and God That Will Never Change

Evangelist Billy Graham (Photo: Reuters/Shannon Stapleton)

Christian Post Report – Evangelist Billy Graham speaks during his Crusade at Flushing Meadows Park in New York, June 25, 2005. Graham, 86, has preached the Gospel to more people in a live audience format than anyone in history – over 210 million people in more than 185 countries. His followers believe that the New York Crusade which runs from June 24 to 26 will be his last live appearance.

Christians must be aware that although times have changed, the Bible’s message has not, the Rev. Billy Graham explains in response to a question on the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s website.

Responding to a question posted by a follower on the website’s “My Answers” section Monday, the 97-year-old religious leader explains that while the Bible may use some archaic language, such as “idolatry,” its words can still be applied to modern-day living.

“The Bible doesn’t need to be updated, and one reason is because it tells us truths about ourselves and about God that will never change,” Graham says, pointing to Luke 21:33 which states: “Heaven and Earth will pass away, but My Words will never pass away.”

The evangelical leader then references the Bible’s use of the word idolatry. Although modern-day Christians are not faced with the same type of idol worship encountered by people who lived during biblical times, they do experience other versions of idolatry, including the worship of money, fame, sex and power.

“[W]e may not worship the same kind of gold or stone idols that God’s people were warned against in the Old Testament (although some cultures still do),” Graham explains, adding that Christians have their own idols that they worship “zealously” instead of turning their attention to Christ, including “money, fame, power, sex, pleasure.”

“These and countless other objects have become the ‘idols’ of our time. Not only are they false gods, but they take the place of the one true God in our lives,” Graham adds.

Graham concludes his message by encouraging Christians to read the Bible with an “open heart and mind,” adding that while the Holy Book will never need an “update,” Christians may need to update their understanding of God’s Word.

“I can’t help but wonder if you’ve ever actually read the Bible for yourself, with an open heart and mind. When you do, you’ll discover it tells us not only that God exists, but that He loves us and wants to come into our lives,” the religious leader continues, adding, “Don’t let your pride or anything else keep you from Christ, but by a simple prayer of faith open your life to his transforming power.”

Graham has often spoken about the importance of looking to the Bible for answers. When asked in April 2014 why some Christians find the Bible to be riveting and others find it boring, Graham responded by suggesting that the reader change their perspective on their religious studies.

“The Bible should be the most exciting book you’ll ever read! The reason is, this isn’t just another book; it is God’s Word, and through its pages God speaks to us. Think of it: The Creator of the universe wants to talk to you!” Graham exclaims, adding that Christians who have trouble connecting with the Bible should consider reading a more recent version.

By communicating through the Bible, God hopes to tell Christians about Himself and his plan, as well as His love for His children, Graham adds.

“As you open it, humbly ask God to make its meaning clear. Most of all, ask God to help you apply its truth to your life, because ‘Your Word is a lamp for my feet, and a light on my path,’ (Psalm 119:105),” the evangelical leader concludes.

Pope Francis Says Death Penalty Is Against God’s Plan, All Christians Must Fight It

Pope Francis (Photo: REUTERS/Tony Gentile)

Christian Post Report – Pope Francis talks aboard the papal plane while en route to Italy September 28, 2015. The pope left the United States on Sunday night, departing from Philadelphia International Airport on an American Airlines flight to Rome.

Pope Francis has said that the fifth commandment in the Bible, “Thou shalt not kill,” applies to the death penalty, and called Christians everywhere to fight to end the punishment.

“Even a criminal has the inviolable right to life, a gift of God,” Francis said as part of a speech marking the Year of Mercy at the Vatican, alongside the beginning of an an international conference called “For a world without the death penalty.”

“This issue has to be considered within the perspective of a penal justice, which is more and more in compliance with human dignity and God’s plan for humanity and society,” the pope said, according to Catholic News Service.

The Roman Catholic Church leader called on the nations of the world to abolish the death penalty, and said that Christians are tasked to campaign for the issue.

“All Christians and people of goodwill are called today to work not only for the abolition of the death penalty, but also to improve the conditions of life in prison, in the respect of human dignity of people deprived of freedom,” Francis continued.

In the past, Francis has said that life imprisonment is also too harsh a punishment, and said governments need to find an alternative way to rehabilitate criminals.

“All Christians and people of good will are thus called today to struggle not only for abolition of the death penalty, whether it be legal or illegal and in all its forms, but also to improve prison conditions, out of respect for the human dignity of persons deprived of their liberty. And this, I connect with life imprisonment,” Francis told representatives of the International Association of Penal Law in October 2014.

“Life imprisonment is a hidden death penalty,” he added.

The death penalty has been abolished in a number of countries worldwide, while in others it remains effectively not in practice. The Death Penalty Information Center reported that 22 countries carried out judicial executions in 2014, the same as in 2013.

While China led the field with over 1,000 executions, the United States also found itself in the top six countries that carried out the most executions, alongside Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Sudan.

The death penalty remains a controversial issue in America, with a Gallup poll from October 2015 finding that most Americans, or 61 percent, continue to support capital punishment.

Some evangelical groups have moved away from a position of strong support for the practice, with the National Association of Evangelicals admitting in October 2015 that there are various opposing views among its members.

“Evangelical Christians differ in their beliefs about capital punishment, often citing strong biblical and theological reasons either for the just character of the death penalty in extreme cases or for the sacredness of all life, including the lives of those who perpetrate serious crimes and yet have the potential for repentance and reformation. We affirm the conscientious commitment of both streams of Christian ethical thought,” read the statement by the NAE Board of Directors, releasing a new resolution on capital punishment.

NAE President Leith Anderson added: “A growing number of Evangelicals call for government resources to be shifted away from the death penalty. Our statement allows for their advocacy and for the advocacy of those of goodwill who support capital punishment in limited circumstances as a valid exercise of the state and as a deterrent to crime.”

Michael W. Smith Talks ‘Hymns II’: Sharing Christian Classics With Next Generation (Interview)

Michael W. Smith (Photo: Michael W. Smith)

Christian Post Report – Michael W. Smith released “Hymns II:Shine On Us” exclusively at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store on Jan. 29.

Michael W. Smith doesn’t need any more validation from the world.

With over 15 million albums sold, 32 No. 1 songs, three Grammy Awards, an American Music Award and 45 Dove Awards under his belt, the 58-year-old singer-songwriter and musician has had a successful career.

After releasing his latest record, Hymns II: Shine On Us last month, Smith isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. “I’m still passionate. I don’t think I’m finished,” the contemporary Christian musician told The Christian Post. “It would be different if I’m tired and ready to retire, but I just don’t think that’s going to happen. I feel like my best work is ahead.”

Before fans of the multi-platinum selling artist whet their appetites with some brand new material, he felt it was important to recreate traditional hymns with his latest release, Hymns II:Shine On Us. A follow up to his 2014 record Hymns, the latest album features more advanced production, with both classic and modern hymns accompanied by a choir, which was not part of the first album.

Smith wanted to record hymns that saved his life, but also saw a need to introduce older hymns to a younger generation who might not be familiar with the historic worship music.

“These hymns saved my life, so it wasn’t a big hurdle for me. I didn’t do it for this reason, but I do think you have a whole generation of young people who don’t know these songs,” he explained. “I think that’s a bit sad. So, I think we’re educating people. I think it’s the right thing to do.”

The musician has been wanting to release his Hymns albums for a long time, but it took him some time to iron out the details of how to make that happen.

“I’ve been wanting to make these hymns records forever. I was just trying to figure out how to do that in the midst of making these pop records or worship records,” he told CP, noting his resolution to the question, “How does that line up in your catalog?” To which he responded, “This is important. I would call this a one off.”

When he released the first Hymns record, Smith worked exclusively with Cracker Barrel Old Country Store and decided to do the same with Hymns II.

“You can’t find this anywhere but Cracker Barrell! It’s a specialty project and Cracker Barrel seemed to be the right fit. They’re a great company and I love them,” the singer said. “When I set out to do the Hymns record, Cracker Barrell seemed to be the right fit. They were excited to partner and do something together.”

More than looking for more awards, plaques and certifications, Smith is hoping that somebody finds the hymns he sings to be meaningful in their lives.

“I hope all of these songs mean something very special to hundreds of thousands of people. There is going to be the right song for the right moment that they’re in,” Smith told CP. “There’s a lot of those songs on this records that will hit people. A three and a half minute song can just completely change somebody’s life, heal somebody, and give somebody a completely different perspective.”

Aside from an illustrious music career that has spanned over 30 years, the father of five and grandfather of 12 has been blessed with a tight knit family. Just as he shares great moments with fans on social media, Smith is also transparent about hard times, which includes the death of his father last year.

More than singing about his Christian faith, Smith leans on that faith during those tough times.

“You’re never really ready to say goodbye to your parents. We were really close. I just know where he’s at,” Smith said. “We’re all going there, we’re going to get there. I’m going to see him again and it’s going to be awesome.”

While the entertainer is focused on his legacy as a husband and father, there is no denying how much of an impact he has had in the world of Christian music. Still, he insists there is much more to accomplish.

One of those things is more acting.

“I think the whole acting thing is not over for me. I think there’s stuff coming down the pipe and I’m going to jump back on the silver screen again,” he revealed. “I was just in ’90 minutes of Heaven’ a few months ago and ‘The Passion Live’ … I think there’s going to be more film and television.”

Even with all of his acting opportunities, Smith cannot forget about his music.

“I’ve got some musical things that I’ve got on my board. I’ve been writing a symphony for the past two years that I’m almost finished with,” he shared. “I’m kind of excited about that.”

Despite three decades in the industry, the pressure still exists for Smith to create a great record.

“I’ve got to make a really great, great, great record. And that’s enough in and of itself,” he said. “You’re supposed to be involved in who are the players, producers, that team of people who can get out there and get a wide audience around the world. I’ve got to do my part and either write or find the greatest songs that can be written.”

Instead of rushing to release new material, Smith is going to take his time in order to make sure it’s right.

“The good news is I’m not in any hurry. This is not going to happen in six months, but I am starting to think about it,” he said. “I’m not under contract with anybody so I’ve got to assemble the ‘A team’ and I’ve got to make the best record of my life. If I can’t do that I’m not going to do one.”

Man Burns 8-Month Pregnant Girlfriend Alive Because He Didn’t Want to Be a Father

Eren Toben, Maria Peiner (Photo: Facebook; Twitter)

Christian Post Report – Eren Toben (L) and Maria Peiner (R).

A young father who wanted to maintain his “free, happy life” was sentenced to 14 years in prison for burning his eight-month pregnant teenage girlfriend alive because he couldn’t bear the thought of losing his freedom to fatherhood.

Eren Toben, 20, lured his 19-year-old girlfriend, Maria Peiner, into a wooded area in Berlin, Germany, before stabbing her with a bread knife and setting her alight, according to the Daily Mail. Toben’s accomplice, Daniel Mueller, 20, was also sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Judge Regina Alex said it was the father-to-be who came up with the idea to get rid of his girlfriend so he could maintain his carefree life.

“For him the crime was a solution, he wanted a free, happy life which he had control over,” said Alex. “He abused Maria’s love for him to lure her into an ambush.”

According to the case against Toben, in January 2015, he lied to Maria when he told her they were going shopping for baby clothes. He drove the unsuspecting teenager to a wooded area on the outskirts of Berlin where he hit her with a piece of wood, stabbed her with a bread knife, poured petrol on her, then set her ablaze.

“She was still conscious, it could have been 10, 20, 30 seconds – she was still moving,” Judge Alex said.

Maria’s charred body was discovered by a walker a day after the incident and Toben and his accomplice were subsequently arrested.

Toben’s fingerprints were found on the handle of the knife near Maria’s burnt remains. Nevertheless, he and his accomplice blamed each other for Maria’s murder after they were arrested but remained silent during their trial.

“He acted for the sole purpose of taking pleasure in the destruction of another human being’s life,” said Judge Alex of Mueller.

NY Yankees Tell Players to Act Like Russell Wilson, Not Cam Newton Following Defeats

Russell Wilson (Photo: Reuters/USA Today Sports/Bob Donnan)

Christian Post Report – Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson (3) congratulates Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (1) following the NFC Divisional round playoff game at Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina, January 17, 2016. The Panthers defeated the Seahawks 31-24.

The New York Yankees have reportedly shown their players footage of Christian quarterback Russell Wilson’s interview following the Seattle Seahawks loss in Super Bowl XLIX as an example of the right way to address the media following a devastating loss.

With Major League Baseball teams beginning their preparation for a long and sometimes frustrating six-month baseball season, the New York Yankees have reportedly trained their players at their spring training facility in Tampa, Florida, on the right and wrong way to handle the media following crushing defeats.

“During the Yankees’ media training day, the Super Bowl is being used to portray the right and wrong way to act,” ESPN senior writer Andrew Marchand was quoted as reporting. “Part of a video shown to pitchers and catchers compares how Cam Newton handled his Super Bowl loss to the way Russell Wilson dealt with his defeat the previous year.”

In stressing how not to act following a loss, the Yankees had their players watch Newton’s press conference following the Carolina Panthers’ loss to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 earlier this month.

After the Panthers lost the biggest football game of the year by 14 points after suffering just one loss the entire season, Newton, who is known for happiness and large smiles, was noticeably upset with a scowl on his face during his postgame press conference.

The 26-year-old answered a few questions with short, one-word replies and did not bother to give any insight or details into what went wrong. After being asked just a few questions, Newton stormed off before the news conference was over.

Newton’s behavior following the game earned him sharp criticism by many football analysts, including NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders.

“You are the face of our brand right now, you can’t do that,” Sanders said. “I understand the emotions of losing, but you can’t do that. A [Peyton] Manning, a [Tom] Brady — all these guys are a prototypical type of quarterback in our game — they’re not going to do that ever.”

On the flipside, Wilson was much more open than Newton was about how much it hurt to lose by four points to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX.

“I have watched a lot of games and I have been in a lot of games and it always hurts to lose, no matter how you lose it,” Wilson said.

Wilson congratulated and gave credit to Brady, the opposing quarterback, for his efforts in the game.

He also took the blame for throwing an interception late in the fourth quarter when the Seahawks were on the goal line and threatening to score the go-ahead touchdown even though many criticized Seahawks coach Pete Carroll for not calling a running play in that situation.

“I put the blame on me,” Wilson said. “I am the one that threw it. It’s something you learn from, something you grow from. I am proud of our guys by the way that we got down the field there in that situation and we were right there and you just keep learning and keep growing.”

Wilson and the Seahawks were victorious the year before in Super Bowl XLVIII with an overwhelming 43-8 victory over the Broncos.

‘Big Ang’ Funeral Prayer Card Sold on eBay for $2K; Friend Says He’s ‘Disgusted’

Mob Wives season 6 YOUTUBE / VH1

Christian Post Report – A screengrab from the trailer for VH1 reality show “Mob Wives” season 6.

A prayer card from the funeral of reality television star Angela Raiola was recently posted to eBay with a starting bid of $2,000.

The prayer card honoring “Big Ang” was added to the website over the weekend, with the two-sided card described as being in “excellent condition.” It included a photo of the “Mob Wives” star as well as the “After Glow” prayer, the text of which reads, in part: “I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when the day is done.”

As of Tuesday, the posting had been removed from eBay, suggesting it had been sold.

Rich Canci, a resident of Staten Island and self-proclaimed friend of Raiola, shared on Facebook that he notified eBay of the posting to have it removed.

“As a friend I am so disgusted by this, I clicked buy item then cancelled just to get it off the internet! What a disgusting piece of [expletive] this person is,” Canci wrote on Tuesday.

Over 200 friends and family, including several “Mob Wives” co-stars, gathered at the Basilica of Regina Pacis in Brooklyn, New York, on Monday to pay their respects to the 55-year-old reality star, who passed away on February 18 after battling lung and brain cancer for years.

Janine Detore, sister to Raiola, spoke at the Monday service, saying Angela was always a star in her eyes long before her “Mob Wives” TV exposure.

“A few days before her death, my sister said she was at peace with dying and she was ready. I said, ‘I’m not!’ She said, ‘Get over it!'” Detore said as she wiped away tears.

“She was a star long before TV. ‘Mob Wives’ didn’t make her a star, she made the show a hit,” the sister added.

Us Weekly reports that the funeral was open casket, and “Big Ang” was dressed in a fur coat and surrounded by flowers, just as she “would have wanted it,” one attendee said.

Raiola’s friend, Vinnie Medugno, added in a statement on Instagram that the reality television star “was surrounded by nothing but love from her immediate family, and closest friends,” in her last hours, saying that “[Big Ang] truly went out richer than any monetary value could ever amount to.”

“YOU, (Her fans) were some of the most special people in her world, and she loved you immensely,” he continued. “In typical Big Ang fashion, we know she would say ‘Love you my babies!'”

“You lived by your own mantra. I will love you, cherish you, and hold you in my heart wherever I go, and whatever I do,” Medugno added.

Raiola appeared on the VH1 series “Mob Wives” from 2011-2012, and then starred in her own spin-off series “Big Ang,” which was later renamed “Miami Monkey.”

The 55-year-old reality star is the niece of a crime boss with the Genovese mafia family stationed in New York City, New York. She previously owned the “Drunken Monkey” bar in Staten Island before having her license revoked from the state because she is a convicted felon.

Norway Gov’t ‘Worried’ About Christian Family’s Faith Before Seizing 5 Children, Lawyer Says

The Bodnariu family (Photo: Facebook/Norway, Return the children to Bodnariu Family)

Christian Post Report – The Bodnariu family.

Court documents and meeting minutes indicate that the Norwegian government expressed concern with the faith of a Romanian Pentecostal family before their five children were removed from parental custody in November, an attorney close to the situation claimed Monday.

After the five children of Ruth and Marius Bodnariu were removed from their home in Naustdal by the Barnevernet (child services) on Nov. 16 due to spanking allegations, Peter Costea, the the president of the Alliance for Romania’s Families, has been in frequent communication with the family and their lawyers, and has access to the family’s court records.

Costea, who is based in Houston, Texas, posted his fourth written analysis on the Bodnariu family’s situation on Monday.

Although Costea previously told The Christian Post that he did not believe the claim that the family was targeted by the Barnevernet because of their Christian faith, he wrote on Monday that newly obtained government records indicate that even before the children were taken from their parents, the authorities were concerned that the family had “their own faith and way of upbringing when it comes to religion.”

“Documents and minutes of meetings have emerged since the abduction showing that as early as Oct. 13, 2015, more than a month before the children were taken into custody, the officials at Naustdal municipality disapproved of the parenting style of the Bodnariu parents; believing it, after questioning the children, to be based on the Bible,” Costea wrote.

“They plainly state that Barnevernet ‘is worried that this is a way of upbringing which is justified by the Bible.’ The authorities pivoted their contemplated removal of the children on the ‘attitude’ the parents ‘have to their own faith and way of upbringing when it comes to religion.'”

“The documents also mention that the children were ‘brought up to respect God and their parents’ values.’ Barnevernet interpreted this as a possible conflict between the children’s assumed inability to live up to their parents’ value expectations and faith and that the parents’ religion could create an ‘inner conflict’ in the children and a stressful family environment,” Costea continued. “Religion is bad for children, Barnevernet’s minutes seem to say, and too much religion is lawful justification for snatching children away from their parents.”

Costea previously told CP that other court documents explained that the children were taken from their parents after the children told investigators that their parents gave them spankings, a disciplinary tactic that is outlawed in Norway.

“In our opinion, the reaction of the Norwegian authorities has been extremely subjective, an incredible display of totalitarian extremism. The Bodnariu family has been accused of spanking its children. Yet, the authorities translated this accusation into child abuse, which is farthest from the truth,” Costea wrote in a letter sent to the Norwegian Ambassador to Romania in December. “Biological parents have the inherent right to reasonably discipline their children. The fact that Norway has banned corporal punishment of children does not mean that Norway is right in this matter and the rest of the world wrong.”

In his posting on Monday, Costea argued that it was the family’s commitment to “Christian values” that “drew the attention of Barnevernet officials and featured prominently in their discussions and strategy prior to the children’s removal.”

“So, the statement that Barnevernet was motivated by a religious animus when abducting the Bodnariu children is accurate and supported by the evidence,” Costea asserted. “The Bible is mentioned four (4) times in the minutes, God once, and religion once. Religion, in fact, appears as a separate subject of discussion in relation to what to do with the children.”

Although Costea and other Bodnariu family supporters have claimed that that the Barnevernet targets religious immigrant families, Andreas Nordli, Norway’s national director for Youth With a Mission, told CP earlier this month that such a claim is not true and that many migrant families get in trouble with the Barnevernet because they aren’t aware of Norway’s stricting parenting laws.

Andreas Hegertun, the spokesman for the Norwegian Pentecostal Movement, assured CP that Norway does not target families because of their faith.

“Every ethnic religious group may worship and raise their children according to their beliefs, as long as they don’t violate Norwegian law,” Hegertun told CP. “In practice this means as long as they don’t use violence. I have never heard of anyone getting in trouble with the government for any other reason than violence, serious neglect or addictions. In this matter we, as churches, strongly agree with our government that violence toward children is not accepted.”

In his analysis, Costea claims that the Barnevernet embodies “Norway’s secular parental ideology.” He added that roughly one-quarter of children taken into custody in Norway are children of immigrants and religious refugees “who are known for their traditional values.”

“Why would the family’s religion irritate Barnevernet?” Costea asked. “The answer is straightforward: Barnevernet embodies Norway’s secular parental ideology. When it conflicts with the parenting style of traditional parents or parents whose parenting style is influenced by religion, in this case Christianity, Barnevernet wins out. Always. Simply because, as an arm of the Norwegian state, it holds the sword and wields it over traditional families.”

Striking the ‘Heartland of Christianity’ in China: Human Rights Watch Documents Arrests, Church Demolition

Christian Post Report – Believers take part in a weekend mass at an underground Catholic church in Tianjin, China, November 10, 2013.

The persecution of Chinese Christians at the hands of the ruling Communist Party continues to be documented by a number of human rights groups who noted that entire churches are being demolished in Zhejiang Province, considered the heartland of Chinese Christianity.

Human Rights Watch released its 2016 report of human rights abuses being committed around the world, and noted that China is facing several problems, documenting the arrests of various human rights defenders, including those who have stood up for freedom of religion.

HRW pointed out in its report that government authorities led a campaign in 2015 demolishing church crosses and even entire churches.

Authorities have argued that all they are doing is removing “illegal structures” that do not comply with zoning requirements, but as several Chinese Christian advocates have pointed out, including Bob Fu of China Aid, the directive is aimed more at reducing the prominence of Christianity in the region.

“In 2015, authorities continued their campaign to remove crosses from churches, and in some cases demolished entire churches in Zhejiang Province, considered the heartland of Chinese Christianity,” the report stated.

Catholics sing on Christmas eve at a church in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, China, December 24, 2015.

“At least a hundred Christians have reportedly been briefly detained for resisting the demolitions since the start of the campaign in early 2014,” it added.

Members of underground congregations and pastors have been detained for protesting against the crackdown on churches, and a significant development earlier in February was the arrest and formal charge of Pastor Gu Yuese of Hangzhou’s Chongyi Church, the largest government sanctioned church in China.

Gu, who was punished for speaking out against the government’s actions, became the highest ranking government-sanctioned church official to be arrested since the cultural revolution in the 1960s, according to Fu.

“I think the likely scenario to happen is that he will be indicted, and depending on his confession, and how cooperative he is, the length of sentence can be negotiated,” Fu told The Christian Post in an interview earlier this month.

He added: “It will shake the spirit of the government-sanctioned church leaders and the congregations throughout China. All these factors will have a ripple effect.”

The HRW report noted that the government often classifies religious groups outside of its control as “evil cuts,” and has gone after Buddhist sects as well.

China continues to officially deny that it is persecuting religious minorities, however, with Communist Party member Li Yunlong writing in China Daily that human rights criticism is “a product of subjective bias and prejudice” with “no foundation in reality.”

“In China, all citizens can freely choose their own religious beliefs, express their beliefs and take part in religious activities. The social environment is constantly improving for the prosperity of religion in China, and society has become more and more objective and reasonable toward religions,” Li said, according to Breitbart.
