Eating Spicy Foods May Lead to a Longer Life – A Heated Debate

Christian Post Report – Chillies are seen on sale at a market in Jakarta, January 6, 2011.

If you’re one of the 54 percent of Americans who like their food hot and spicy, then here’s some good news: Researchers in China suggest that regularly eating spicy foods could lead to a longer life.

A four-year study conducted by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences revealed that eating spicy foods on a daily, or almost daily, basis might lower the overall risk of premature death by up to 14 percent. The study also appears to connect the hot diet ingredients with the delay of premature deaths caused by cancer, ischemic heart disease and respiratory system ailments. Although only observational and with no formal conclusions released, the study does suggest that additional research may be valuable to identify how much of which specific spices might contribute to the death-delaying effect.

The study was conducted between 2005 and 2008 on more than 510,000 Chinese citizens and included another seven-year follow-up period. Participants were associated with the China Kadoorie Biobank, a Chinese research institute that investigates the genetic and environmental causes of chronic diseases in the Chinese population. After the initial screening (achieved through questionnaires, physical measurements and blood analysis), the study subjects were monitored through established registries and health insurance providers, all of which maintained databases for the purpose of the research. Future data will also be reviewed and analyzed to assess changes in risk factors in the study population. The study’s purpose is to advance comprehensive understanding of the causes of chronic diseases in China and other countries.

More than 20,000 study subjects died during the study’s follow-up period, and their diets and causes of death were investigated. Taking into account age and other significant factors, analysis revealed that people who had eaten hot spices six to seven times a week had lived approximately 14 percent longer than those who ate the spices less than once per week. The finding was similar even when the deaths were attributed to cancer, heart or lung diseases.

What wasn’t investigated was whether it was the spice that made the difference or other factors consistent in the lives of the longer-lived population. The majority of the longer-lived participants lived in more rural communities with less exposure to smog or other toxic environmental conditions associated with high population density.

Dr. Nita Forouhi, a researcher of Epidemiology at the University of Cambridge (which collaborated on the study), called the findings “hypothesis-generating,” as opposed to conclusive, in an editorial in the BMJ. Peppers and other spicy foods contain capsaicin, a chemical that causes a burning sensation on human mucous membranes. Capsaicin and other “heated” chemicals are known to have anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. They also are believed to contribute to higher rates of fat-burning in overweight people.

Some medical community members are skeptical of the findings, not because of what they appear to present, but because of how the study was conducted. Daphne Miller, an associate clinical professor at the University of California San Francisco, identified her personal challenges with the study. She told CNN that there was no identification of exactly which peppers or spicy foods were consumed; the form those peppers/foods may have been in at the time of consumption (dried, fresh or oiled); how they may have been cooked; or what other ingredients may have been included in the dish at the same time.

Still other researchers suggest that the longer-lived people may simply have the propensity to eat more spicy foods, and that the content of their diet is not as important in explaining their longevity as other aspects of their lifestyle. “Is it a biological or behavioral mechanism that caused the skew in the study numbers?” asked bio-psychologist John E. Hayes in a CNN interview. Hayes is an associate professor of food science and the director of the Sensory Evaluation Center at Penn State University.

Other diet ingredients like garlic and curry are believed to protect against cancer and may be beneficial to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, said registered dietician Lona Sandon on Philly.com. If nothing else, she continued, “These spices add flavor and fun to food, but not calories or other risk of harm.”

The study identifies several theories still in need of evidence. Its lead author, Lu Qi is an associate professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. He noted that animal studies have demonstrated that fresh spices help to improve cholesterol levels, control inflammation and reduce oxidative stress. While human studies are “sparse,” the animal tests suggest that dietary modification to include fresh, hot spices might positively impact human populations, too.

It has long been said that variety is the spice of life, but it may turn out that pepper is the spice of a longer life.

Kanye West Asks for Prayers After Announcing He’s $53M in Debt

Christian Post Report – Recording artist Kanye West performs during the closing ceremony for the 2015 Pan Am Games at Pan Am Ceremonies Venue.

Rap artist Kanye West recently asked for prayers after claiming he is $53 million in “personal debt.”

In a frantic series of tweets before his appearance on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” on February 13, West announced his alleged financial struggles.

“I write this to you my brothers while still 53 million dollars in personal debt […] Please pray we overcome […] This is my true heart […],” West tweeted on Saturday evening.

On Sunday morning, the “Yeezus” creator then went on to ask Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for help, writing: “Mark Zuckerberg invest 1 billion dollars into Kanye West ideas […] after realizing he is the greatest living artist and greatest artist of all time.”

The famed musical artist also targeted other tech billionaires, including Google co-founder Larry Page and all “you dudes in San Fran play rap music in your homes but never help the artists.”

“You love hip hop, you love my art […] I am your favorite artist but you watch me barely breathe and still play my album in your house […],” West continued.

The “Gold Digger” artist went on to tell Zuckerberg that “one of the coolest things you could ever do is to help me in my time of need,” adding, “and I will always respect you for that and the world will love you […]”

“All you guys had meetings with me and no one lifted a finger to help […],” the rapper added.

West debuted two songs off of his new album The Life of Pablo in his appearance on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, including “Highlights” and “Ultralight Beam.” The album has received positive reviews ahead of its general release.

While West’s fans have pleaded with him to drop his new album on music sharing websites like Spotify and iTunes, the 38-year-old musician confirmed in his long-winded social media rant that he will only be releasing the new compilation on Tidal, a music sharing platform started by fellow artist Jay Z.

“Please for all music lovers. Please subscribe to tidal!!! I decided not to sell my album for another week. Please subscribe to tidal,” West tweeted on Sunday.

West also plugged Tidal during his “SNL” performance, when he told the audience to subscribe to the music streaming service.

Although West has had a momentously successful music career, several media outlets stipulated that the rapper may have hit financial trouble when he began his foray into fashion in 2005.

Earlier this month, West rented out Madison Square Garden in New York City to debut his third fashion collection and allow a select number of fans to listen to his new album before its general release.

Since his string of Saturday tweets, the artist has not elaborated on what he owes his debt to.

Despite his claims, West has not been desperate enough to take money from controversial pharmaceutical entrepreneur Martin Shkreli, who, last week, offered to buy the Kanye new album for $10 million if he could be the sole owner of the record.

Shkreli made headlines in 2015 for upping the price of a cancer medication by over 5,000 percent. He was subsequently arrested by the FBI for securities fraud.

David Mann Doesn’t Want to Be Labeled Christian Comedian

david mann(Photo: Reuters/Kevork Djansezian)Actor David Mann and his wife Tamela arrive at the 2014 BET Awards in Los Angeles, California June 29, 2014.

Christian Post Report – David Mann has been outspoken about his Christian faith since getting his start in gospel legend Kirk Franklin’s choir decades ago, but he doesn’t want to be known as just a Christian comedian.

The 49-year-old, whose face is well-known as a comedic element in 11 Tyler Perry films like “Meet The Browns,” is currently embarking on the “Rebirth of Comedy Tour” with the likes of Christian comedians Akitunde, Mark Gregory and Christian rapper Big Redd. Still, Mann does not want to be boxed into a label of just being a Christian comedian.

“Rather than being locked in the box of Christian comedy, we’d rather consider ourselves Christians who happen to be comedians,” Mann told Savannah.com. “We love God, but we have to be funny otherwise.”

While he does not want to stamp the show with a label, the husband of gospel singer Tamela Mann is making it clear that his tour is not filled with profanity and sexual content.

“What we’re doing is bringing good, clean, wholesome fun of the family kind,” Mann said. “This is one of those comedy tours that can bring the whole family out.

The stand-up comedian who became a television star on TBS’ “Meet The Browns” said the show is unique because of the way families can come together to enjoy it.

“It’s rare to get a comedy tour that you can bring everyone from grandbabies to grandmamas too,” he said. “I remember in the day when we had comics who were funny to kids and their parents.”

Aside from his comedy tour, Mann is gearing up to appear in the second season of his BET docu-series “It’s a Mann’s World” on Feb. 23.

Last year, he and his wife, Tamela, spoke to The Christian Post about the premise of the show.

“We wanted the world to see an imperfect world because we’re a work in progress,” David told CP. “We’re a blended family so we wanted to show people how you can show the craziness without the way you see it today. We’re not knocking any other shows, but we just want to show people some good, wholesome family entertainment.”

In their show, the Manns showcase a full household with their four children, two of those stemming from previous relationships, a niece they adopted and eight grandchildren. David said it was important for him to give others hope through his show.

“Just looking at the footage, seeing that somebody is going to get hope and say ‘I can face this issue and confront this issue and it can work out in the end. It can be better..’ that’s some of the things we wanted to do when we did the show,” David told CP.

For Tamela, 49, it is important to share struggles with others in order to help people get through similar situations.

“A lot of things that we go through as individuals and families, everything is just not for you,” Tamela told CP. “It’s a testimony for you to encourage somebody else, to share and tell somebody that they can make it so that we can all have triumph over whatever the situation is that we’re going through.”

Kanye West Explains Video Game for Mother in Heaven

Kanye West (Photo: Reuters/Andrew Kelly)

Christian Post Report – Kanye West dances during his Yeezy Season 3 Collection presentation and listening party for the “The Life of Pablo” album during New York Fashion Week February 11, 2016.

Aside from a new album and clothing collection, Kanye West recently debuted a new video game concept centered around his mother in heaven.

The 38-year-old rap mogul who premiered his Yeezy Season 3 clothing collection during New York Fashion Week at Madison Square Garden, also used the opportunity to debut his new album, The Life Of Pablo.

At the event, West also gave fans a glimpse of a new video game called “Only One,” where a screen showed his mother flying on a white winged horse through the clouds of heaven.

“I worked on a video game, and I wanted to show y’all. The idea of the game is my mom traveling through the gates of heaven,” West said at his Feb. 11 event, according to E! reports. “That’s not easy to do. Y’all just act like (expletive) is regular, man.”

He went on to explain the concept of the game along with the hardships he faced in bringing it to fruition.

“The concept is my mom traveling through the gates of heaven. No, You don’t understand like I go out and meet with everybody in San Fran, and they’ll diss the (expletive) out of me and’ I’ll be I want to make a game’ and they be like (expletive ) you,” West said. “Man this (expletive) was hard to do, man.”

West revealed he felt misunderstood a lot of times and expressed his gratitude and love toward his supporters.

“I feel a lot of times I get misunderstood just as an artist because y’all see so many times artist being controlled by corporations or public perceptions or their current finances or whatever and if you gonna be an artist you just gotta do what’s in your heart and fight for every dream that you may dream whatever discipline it may be no one can tell you what field to stay in,” he said.

The artist lost his mother Donda West in 2007, due to complications with plastic surgery. Last year, he told Q magazine that he felt things would be different if he did not move to California.

“If I had never moved to L.A. she’d be alive,” West told Q. “I don’t want to go far into it because it will bring me to tears.”

While West’s creative brand is called DONDA, he recently spoke about his late mother and the late father of his wife, Kim Kardashian, helping create his new album.

“I’m only doing one percent, two percent of the work and God is doing the rest of the work. My mom… had Teddy Riley change his flight and come back to the studio,” West said in an interview on Big Boy Radio. “Robert Kardashian is making sure that all the deals is getting done. He’s still doing deals for controversial black people from up in heaven.”

Pastor Le’Andria Johnson Fires Back at Her Critics

Le'Andria Johnson(Photograph: Twitter/Le’Andria Johnson)Le’Andria Johnson is a Grammy-Award winning gospel singer and the 2010 winner of the BET “Sunday Best” singing competition.

Christian Post Report – Pastor Le’Andria Johnson is firing back at critics who don’t approve of her giving out cigarettes and condoms on the streets of Atlanta, Georgia, in the name of Jesus.

On the Oxygen show “Preachers of Atlanta,” viewers witness Johnson dressing to blend in with prostitutes while going on the streets to minister to them. After the show premiered and she received criticism, the 33-year-old pastor and founder of Imperfect People Changing Ministries in Atlanta, says her unique form of street ministry reaches people that churches don’t.

“Not one word about getting tested and six people in your church is HIV positive or has AIDS. I have seen people affected by HIV, in the holiness, COGIC, apostolic, AME, Baptist, and CME churches alike,” Johnson wrote. “You might not agree, with all [I do], but I know in Atlanta there is a need. Not one word from ‘the church’ encouraging people to take their medication or even take a 3 min test.”

The season 3 winner of the BET gospel music competition “Sunday Best” went on to challenge churches who do not do enough community outreach in her city.

“FYI, 30312 has the highest infection rate in the city, Including herpes and syphilis. Most of these churches has NO community outreach, ( y’all just shout and record it ),” she said. “The people in the community don’t even know you. You even walk by and refuse to speak, on your way in to shout.”

While Johnson feels she is being singled out for her actions, she made sure to mention that people who seem to have it all together in church are struggling with their own sins.

“I have also experienced the saints, with sex and drug addictions, sitting right in church. Poppers, cocaine, weed, alcohol , Molly, and crack etc. Black people, (church people) are good at sweeping things under the rug,” she wrote. “Your former pastor or church member died with cancer, ( it was a cancer caused by AIDS. That young man’s lymph nodes is swollen because he is afraid to get tested and no motivation to start his treatment.)”

Johnson said Christians are arguing while satanists are increasing their churches and Christianity is declining. Instead of evangelizing, providing food, clothing and shelter, Johnson said her critics are focused on her use of profanity and choice to dress like a prostitute for her ministry.

“She doesn’t need to be using profanity on that video thingie or showing her breast. But she ain’t got it all wrong,” Johnson wrote. “She is doing ministry. You know what Jesus said?: Go to the hedges and highways…. Compelling & converting !!!!”

The 33-year-old pastor who doesn’t avoid using profanity publicly, explained her street ministry to Entertainment Tonight.

“I want to meet [people] where they are, you know? And the best thing that I can do [is] dress up like them … and start a conversation, create a conversation,” Johnson told Entertainment Tonight. “By the end of that conversation, then I can be like, ‘OK, let me take this wig off, you know, let me come back. I’m gonna meet you at this place, let me come back and I’m dressed in regular clothes,’ and they gonna be like, ‘Who are you?’ And I’m like, ‘The same girl that was in them shorts and fishnets.'”

Meagan Good Reveals Her Struggles With Celibacy

DeVon Franklin (Photo: Courtesy of Omg! Publicity)

Christian Post Report – DeVon Franklin and Meagan Good release their first book, “The Wait” on February 2, 2016.

Meagan Good has been promoting celibacy with her husband, DeVon Franklin, in their new book, but the actress admits that the concept has not always been an easy one for her.

“I’ve been in several relationships since I was 19. I would feel bad and be like, ‘Let’s try to be celibate,'” Good revealed in an Entertainment Tonight report. “And then I was worried that they were going to cheat or the relationship was going to end or whatever, and what happened was the relationship ended anyway.”

However Franklin, the 37-year-old minister and head of Franklin Entertainment, said there are men who are willing to wait until marriage to have sex with their love interests.

“When a man finds a woman he loves, he will go through hell and high water for her even if she presents this crazy idea of waiting, and he has no desire to wait,” Franklin said.

The 34-year-old award winning “Minority Report” actress admitted that waiting until she got married may have been harder on her than on her future husband, who had been abstinent for 10 years.

“It was very tough,” Good shared. “It’s interesting because I think it was harder for me.”

These days, Good sees the benefit in waiting until marriage to engage in sexual intercourse.

“We settle for things that we normally wouldn’t settle for if we weren’t co-dependant on them physically. So I would say the wait helps you come to the space of knowing if this person is really your [spouse] or identifying if they are not your [spouse] and why much quicker,” Good previously told CP. “A lot of times you don’t get that resolution with this person you want to be with long term because it takes you a lot longer to actually learn them as a human being. It [can] take you a lot longer to realize this isn’t someone you should be with because you’re wrapped up in the physical part of the relationship.”

Good and Franklin got married in 2012, and have been vocal about their union since then. Although they didn’t initially plan to divulge intimate details of their relationship, the couple revealed why they decided to be transparent about their love life.

“We were just candid about it because the more we talked to people about it and the more interest there was in people who desired to do it or were secretly doing it, we realized that it was something that we were supposed to use to help other people. We want people to have the best that God has for them,” she previously told CP. “What we did really worked for us and made all the difference in the world. Why not share that if it can bless someone else and maybe make all the difference in the world for someone else as well?”

ISIS Sex Slave Survivor: ‘What They Are Doing to Women Is More Difficult Than Death’

Nadia Murad Basee (Photo: Reuters/Eduardo Munoz)

Christian Post Report – Nadia Murad Basee, a 21-year-old Iraqi woman of the Yazidi faith, speaks to members of the Security Council during a meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York, December 16, 2015.

A 21-year-old Iraqi woman whose family was massacred by the Islamic State terror group while she was kept as a sex slave before managing to escape, has testified about the horrific torture and abuse militants are inflicting on women and young girls.

Nadia Murad shared her story during a visit to London, where she revealed how IS fighters killed six of her brothers and her mother in Northern Iraq, according to The Mirror on Sunday. Murad herself was taken in as a sex slave, one of close to 5,000 Yazidi girls and women the terror group has kidnapped.

The sex slave survivor said that some of the things Islamic radicals are making women go through are “more difficult than death.”

“A year and a half has passed and the genocide against the Yazidis is continuous. We die every day because we see the world silent in the face of our plight,” she said.

“My mother saw them killing my brothers and then they took my mother and killed her. I was already orphaned as I didn’t have a father, all I had in the war was my mother,” Murad continued.

ISIS (Photo: Reuters/Denis Balibouse)

Women hold a banner during a demonstration marking the first anniversary of Islamic State’s surge on Yazidis of the town of Sinjar, in front of the United Nations European headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, August 3, 2015.

“But when they took me to Mosul and raped me, I forgot my mother and brothers. Because what they were doing to the women was more difficult than death,” she added.

“Imagine until now, for more than a year and a half, girls as young as 9 are being rented and sold out [for sex].”

Millions of people have been displaced and driven out of Iraq and Syria as refugees due to IS, which has also killed thousands of soldiers and civilians, and holds thousands of women and girls as sex slaves. Minorities such as Christians and Yazidis have been specifically targeted by the radicals.

A number of victims have managed to escape the clutches of the terror group to share their stories, and some have even formed all-female battalions to fight back against the terror group.

Fox News reported last week that hundreds of Yazidi women aged between 17 and 37 have been training as the “Sun Ladies” to launch an offensive on the IS stronghold of Mosul, where many of them were forced to serve as sex slaves.

“Whenever a war wages, our women end up as the victims,” said Capt. Khatoon Khider, a member of the battalion.

“Women were throwing their children from the mountains and then jumping themselves because it was a faster way to die. Our hands were all tied. We couldn’t do anything about it,” she added, recalling the persecution of Yazidis.

In her statement, Murad said that the government has failed to protect the vulnerable populations, and called on the world community to stand up against the IS “criminals.”

“When I speak I didn’t speak just on my behalf, but on behalf of all the women and children affected in the war zone,” she said.

“Two months have passed since I have been campaigning and people have been happy, not just Yazidis, about this message.”

A ‘Progressive’ Church: No Scripture Required

A "Progressive" Church: No Scripture Required

Christian Post Report – Not getting what you need from the Bible? Well, just listen for God’s voice elsewhere, we’re told. But here’s a fair warning, we often do a convincing impersonation.

A page torn from an inspirational daily calendar of Bible verses is making rounds these days on social media. It features a pretty purple flower and a quote from Luke 4:7: “If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.”

It’s meant to inspire — until you realize who said it: Satan.

Now whether this was an oversight by the calendar designer, or a clever Photoshop job, the takeaway is the same: Context matters when it comes to Scripture. But today, there’s an even deeper problem with how we use Bible verses, and a recent article in the Huffington Post offers a sad example of why.
