5 Christian Kids Seized by Norwegian Gov’t Over ‘Spankings,’ Not Family’s Faith, Activist Says

Christian Post Report – The Bodnariu family.

The reason why five Romanian Pentecostal children were seized from their parents in November by Norwegian child services is because authorities used the fact that parents disciplined their children with spankings to charge them with child abuse, an activist close to the situation says.

Lawyer Peter Costea, the president of the Alliance for Romania’s Families who has been in frequent communication with the family and its lawyers and has access to court records, told The Christian Post on Monday that court documents indicate that the five children of Ruth and Marius Bodnariu were taken from their parents’ custody on Nov. 16, 2015, because the children told investigators that their parents spanked them as a disciplinary measure.

Costea explained that on Nov. 16, the Bodnariu’s two daughters got into a fight on the bus while on the way to school and the oldest daughter was then questioned by the school’s principal how they were being treated by the parents at home.

After the daughter explained that her parents used spankings to discipline her and her siblings, Costea, who is based in Texas, explained that the principal contacted authorities like she is legally obliged to do and told them about the spanking allegations.

Costea was informed by sources close to the matter that investigators from the Barnevernet (Norway’s child service agency) asked the children leading questions in order to procure incriminating evidence against the parents, allowing the agency to remove the children from the home.

In a letter sent to Tove Bruvik Westberg, the Norwegian Ambassador to Romania, Costea wrote that Norway has violated the Bodnariu’s parenting rights and added that the “punishment doesn’t fit the crime.”

“In our opinion, the reaction of the Norwegian authorities has been extremely subjective, an incredible display of totalitarian extremism. The Bodnariu family has been accused of spanking its children. Yet, the authorities translated this accusation into child abuse, which is farthest from the truth,” Costea wrote. “Biological parents have the inherent right to reasonably discipline their children. The fact that Norway has banned corporal punishment of children does not mean that Norway is right in this matter and the rest of the world wrong.”

Costea added that the disciplinary measures taken by the Bodnariu parents does not violate the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

“Though Norway might wish to be a step ahead of the convention in this regard, the convention does not give it the right to confiscate children from their biological parents,” he wrote. “The reaction of the Norwegian authorities has been disproportionate to the improprieties that the Bodnariu parents are alleged to have committed. It has been irrational and extreme.”

Costea told CP that neighbors and even the girls’ principal have supplied testimonies stating that the Bodnariu parents are good parents. However, those testimonies have been ignored by Barnevernet investigators.

“The documents contain a lot of extenuating evidence or exculpatory evidence for the parents from neighbors, coming from the school principal, coming from the local municipality and all of that seems to have been absolutely ignored by the child welfare agency, which, in my mind, is absolutely major and a denial of due process,” Costea said.

“The school principal lives almost next door, they live in the same neighborhood and she kept on saying,

‘Look, the girls are normal, they are intelligent, they are developing well, and have never seen any abuse,'” Costea added. “‘They have all they need to eat. They bring lunch to school everyday. I haven’t seen any problems. The parents and the girls and the children play together and engage in various activities and I have never had any suspicions and I haven’t seen anything.'”

Despite the testimonies in support of the Bodnariu parents, the children remain in three separate foster homes and the parents have limited visitation rights.

The Bodnariu family’s next court hearing is scheduled for sometime in March. Although the family has claimed that the Barnevernet has initiated the adoption process for the children, Costea states that the authorities can’t put the children up for adoption until the parental relationship has been completely severed.

“In March, they will have a hearing on whether or not to sever the parental relationship and they want the parents to be subjected to a psychological evaluation,” Costea explained.

In an attempt to get the Norwegian authorities to release the children back to their parents, at least 10 members of the Romanian Parliament traveled to Oslo last week to meet with Norwegian authorities. However, Costea has not received word on whether an agreement has been reached.

Although it was initially reported that the principal called the authorities out of concern over the family’s Christian faith, Costea states that such a claim is not accurate.

“The school principal actually did not, at least based upon what I know and have read, the school principal did not convey any concern about the religious beliefs of the family,” Costea stated. “In Norway, teachers have the obligation to inform the authorities whenever school kids tell them ‘Hey, my parents are spanking me or hitting me.'”

The Bodnariu family is not alone in their grievances with the Barnevernet. Costea contends that the Barnevernet has displayed a pattern of targeting migrant families.

“I have come across a whole bunch of documents, including a petition that was signed by parents from all over the world — Eastern Europe, Turkey, India, Polish, Czech, Lithuanian and so on — whose children have been seized by Norwegian authorities,” Costea said. “The consensus of these migrants living in Norway is ‘they are targeting us among others because they want our kids to grow up Norwegian.'”

Pastor E. Dewey Smith Grieves After Death of Sister and Mother Weeks Apart

Pastor E. Dewey Smith (Photo: Facebook/E. Dewey Smith)

Christian Post Report – Pastor E. Dewey Smith and his sister Edwanna Smith Stephens.

Just 21 days after the death of his mother, Verlene Smith, Senior Pastor E. Dewey Smith Jr. at The House of Hope Atlanta (Greater Travelers Rest) in Decatur, Georgia, is in mourning again, this time for his sister, Edwanna Smith Stephens, who died last Friday.

“My brother passed 1/29/07. My mother left me 1/2/16. And my sister 1/22/16. I’m hurting bad, yet thankful,” Smith noted in a Facebook post the day after his sister died.

On Sunday, in brief remarks to his congregation, he thanked them for supporting him through his dark time and revealed that his siblings had requested that he deliver their eulogies should he outlive them.

Thank you for your prayers and support from Dr. Smith

“I want to thank you for your prayers and support. You know many of us have had deaths in our family. It’s one thing when you have to use your hands to close your momma’s casket and two weeks later use the same hands and close your sister’s eyes, to see her take her last breath. It’s just been not the best time. I thank you for understanding that, I hope you can,” began Smith in a video clip of his remarks.

“Your support means everything, it really does, I thank God for the timing. And so sadly, some of you were there Jan. 9, when we said ‘see you later’ to my mother and three weeks later, for some reason, my siblings have all decided that if I should outlive them, that I would have to say the final words over them. And so having to preach my sister’s eulogy two weeks after doing my mom’s is not something I look forward to. And so your prayers mean everything to me. It really does,” he added.

I STILL can't believe I'm actually posting this…….SMH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!On January 9, 2016 I had to give the Eulogy…

Stephens’ memorial service is planned for Jan. 30 at the Macon Centreplex in Macon, Georgia.
Perhaps a prelude of what can be expected in the eulogy of his sister on Saturday, Smith shared a few words about his sister on his Facebook page.

“You were mad at me because I ‘replaced you as the baby’! However, it didn’t take long before I became ‘your baby’! You made me practice the piano for YEARS, helped me with algebra and taught me how to drive a ‘stick-shift’! I thought you were the ‘sweetest’ until I got ‘older’ and learned you could be just as MEAN as sweet! You got on my ‘nerves’ because you did it ‘your way’ but KNOW, I loved you more than ANY brother ever loved their sister!” he wrote.

“I wish you could get on my ‘nerves’ just ONE MORE time……I SWEAR, I wouldn’t complain, fuss or give a REBUTTAL!!!! I know Momma is SO GLAD to see you……I’m glad you’re not hurting anymore……” he continued. “Just know that both of y’all leaving us in 21 DAYS is an EXCRUCIATING pain to carry!!!! I LOVE YOU SUG!!!!!! I’LL NEVER FORGET YOU!!!!!!!!!”

Smith has been receiving an outpouring of support from congregants and pastors alike, such as Jentezen Franklin, senior pastor of Free Chapel in Gainesville, Georgia, who tweeted “praying for you sir. They are in your future not your past.”

My Brother passed 1/29/07,My Mother left me 1/2/16And my Sister 1/22/16. I'm hurting bad, yet thankful.

Stephen Colbert Lampoons Trump on ‘2 Corinthians’ Remark

Stephen Colbert (Photo: Screengrab/YouTube/The Late Show with Stephen Colbert)

Christian Post Report – Stephen Colbert, host of the Late Show on CBS.

Comedian and primetime television host Stephen Colbert poked some fun at Republican primary frontrunner Donald Trump over the billionaire real estate mogul’s recent “Two Corinthians” comment.

Last week when addressing students at Liberty University, Trump referred to the New Testament book of 2 Corinthians as Two Corinthians.

On an episode of CBS’ “The Late Show.” Colbert made fun of Trump’s speech before Liberty, referring to it as “the pander express.”

“Trump loves the Bible so much he doesn’t even need to read it, apparently, because he had a little trouble with the name of one of the books of the Bible,” said the “Late Show” host.

Donald TrumpREUTERS / Scott MorganRepublican U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally at Living History Farms in Urbandale, Iowa, January 15, 2016.

After showing the part of the speech where Trump called the book Two Corinthians, Colbert asked one of the show’s musicians if he had ever heard the book called Two Corinthians, to which he responded “never in my life.”

Colbert then compared saying Two Corinthians to pronouncing the Old Testament book of Job like the word job.

“The Mexicans are coming here into our country to steal our book of Jobs,” Colbert said, mockingly, alluding to past controversial remarks made by Trump.

In remarks given to Liberty University students last week, Trump garnered backlash over his referring to 2 Corinthians as Two Corinthians.

“We’re going to protect Christianity. I can say that. I don’t have to be politically correct. … Two Corinthians, 3:17, that’s the whole ballgame … is that the one you like?” stated Trump, as reported by Politico.

Trump’s overall speech as well as his name for the New Testament Epistle received critique from both Liberty students and others on social media.

“He mispronounced a book of the Bible. He cursed — twice. And on Martin Luther King Day, the GOP presidential candidate said he was honoring the slain civil rights leader by dedicating to him the record crowds he says he drew for the school’s opening convocation,” reported NPR.

“Students in the room snickered and laughed, and advisers to two of Trump’s top rivals, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, were quick to point out the gaffe on Twitter.”

Bobby Ross Jr. of GetReligion.org noted, however, in a piece published Tuesday that Trump might not have actually done anything wrong when calling the Epistle Two Corinthians.

Ross said in British English the term Two Corinthians is used and Trump does have a Scottish mother, thereby possibly influencing how he spoke the name.

“So no, Trump didn’t really mess up. Except that he probably did. The takeaway from a media reporting standpoint: More context is always helpful. So are fewer assumptions,” wrote Ross.

Colbert’s comedic critique of Trump’s speech come as the businessman continues to top the ranks of the Republican field.

The Challenge of Unplugging ISIS From the Internet

The Challenge Of Unplugging ISIS From The Internet

Christian Post Report – A top executive at Google has suggested that IS’ access to the Internet be blocked to stop the terror group from using the Web as a propaganda platform.

While speaking at the Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House in London Monday, Jared Cohen, Google’s head of ideas, suggested that IS has taken advantage of social media platforms as a recruitment tool, especially for young, impressionable westerners.

Cohen said a “short-term win” for this problem would be to force IS to be contained to the “dark web,” thus making it more difficult for Internet users to come into contact with the terrorist organization and risk being recruited to join its ranks.

Marco Rubio Turns the Tables on an Atheist Critic

Marco Rubio Turns The Tables On An Atheist Critic

Christian Post Report – Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio told an atheist in the audience that he won’t be “forced” to stop talking about his faith on the campaign trail and argued that atheists should want his faith to influence his decisions.

During Rubio’s Monday town hall meeting in Waverly, Iowa, an atheist attendee named Justin Scott, a member of the Freedom From Religion Foundation who also runs his own YouTube channel, commented during a question and answer session on Rubio’s recent campaign ad that simply features Rubio talking about how he follows his faith and that his goal is to live alongside God for eternity.

Scott argued that it seems like Rubio, who is Catholic, is more interested in running for “Pastor-in-Chief” rather than Commander-in-Chief and then asked Rubio how he would defend the rights of nontheists if he is elected president in 2016.

“As I said during my speech, you have the right to believe whatever you want, you have a right to believe in nothing at all. You certainly have that right. I can’t force you to be Christian,” Rubio responded. “Christianity is a free gift and we Christians believe that salvation is a free gift that has to be willfully accepted. You can’t force it on people. You have a right to believe in whatever you want. Now, I am going to share my faith, especially when I am asked. Because, my faith influences who I am and every aspect of my life.”

The currently untreatable Zika virus, which causes babies to be born with underdeveloped brains, is likely to spread all across the American continents, the World Health Organization has warned.

BBC News reported that the infection has spread through 2Christian Post Report – 1 countries in the Caribbean, North and South America, and has been linked to thousands of babies being born with underdeveloped brains.

The virus is native to Africa, but is believed to have spread in Brazil sometime in May 20Christian Post Report – 15. It is transmitted by the Aedes mosquitoes, which are found in all countries in the region, except for Chile and Canada.

As a precaution measure, El Salvador urged women last week to avoid getting pregnant until 20Christian Post Report – 18, or risk their children being born with birth defects.

“We’d like to suggest to all the women of fertile age that they take steps to plan their pregnancies, and avoid getting pregnant between this year and next,” said Deputy Health Minister Eduardo Espinoza.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains on its website that about one in five people affected with Zika will become ill, with symptoms including fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis (red eyes).

It adds that there are currently no vaccines or medications available to prevent or treat the virus.

While deaths due to the disease are rare, BBC pointed out that there have been 3,500 reported cases of microcephaly, babies born with small brains, in Brazil since October 20Christian Post Report – 15 alone.

Professor Laura Rodrigues, a fellow of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said that the medical community needs to adapt fast to the new challenge.

“Until November we knew nothing, this has caught us by surprise and we’re trying to learn as fast as we can,” Rodrigues said.

“Wherever there is dengue, there is mosquito, then it will spread and not just in Americas I think there is a very real chance it will spread in Asia.”

The CDC added that the Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, which bite all day long, are found in the U.S. and can transmit Zika along with other diseases, such as the dengue fever and chikungunya.

Public Health England reported over the weekend that at least three British travelers are known to have been infected with the virus so far, associated with travel to Colombia, Suriname and Guyana.

Still, the government agency pointed out that Zika “does not occur naturally in the U.K.”

CNN noted that there are concerns with the upcoming 20Christian Post Report – 16 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, though Games spokesman Phil Wilkinson said venues will be inspected daily for mosquitoes.

Wilkinson also pointed out that the Rio games will take place in the months of August and September, which is winter time in Brazil. The cooler and drier climate is expected to significantly reduce the presence of the mosquitoes.
