Militants Shout ‘God Is Great’ in Slaughter of 20 at Pakistani University

Militants have slaughtered at least 20 people and wounded dozens of others at a university in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, though there are conflicting reports whether the Taliban is claiming responsibility.

Reuters noted that government officials are warning the death toll at Bacha Khan University in the city of Charsadda could rise to 40, with Pakistan’s army continuing to carry out operations in the campus and in the surrounding area in the search for suspects.

At least four of the armed gunmen are dead, officials said, though it is not clear if others were involved.

A senior Pakistani Taliban commander initially claimed responsibility for the assault, but an official spokesman for the group later denied involvement, describing the attack as “un-Islamic.”

Mohammad Khurrassani, from the Pakistan Taliban’s central organization, said the group “strongly condemn the attack on Bacha Khan University in Charsadda and disown the attack, saying this is not according to Shariah.”

Pakistan continues to battle terrorism on its territory, especially in the regions closest to the border with Afghanistan.

“We’ve seen consistent operations by the Taliban up in this area,” CNN counterterrorism analyst Phil Mudd said. “I see this as simply as retaliatory, that is the Taliban saying, ‘If you’re going to bring Pakistani special forces and the army up into our turf, you’re going pay a heavy price.”

Back then the attack was condemned by the Afghan branch of the Taliban, however, saying that the killing of children goes against the Islamic faith.

“The intentional killing of innocent people, children and women is against the basics of Islam and this criteria has to be considered by every Islamic party and government,” spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said.

Television footage of the latest attack apparently showed that many of the dead were shot in the head execution-style.

The gunmen are believed to have scaled the university walls on Wednesday morning, before entering different buildings and opening fire on students and teachers.

Witnesses to the attack said that the attackers chanted Islamic slogans as they carried out the shooting.

“We saw three terrorists shouting, ‘God is great!’ and rushing towards the stairs of our department,” said one student, who wasn’t named, according to BBC News.

“One student jumped out of the classroom through the window. We never saw him get up.”

Reports are also emerging of a chemistry lecturer, named Syed Hamid Husain, who apparently shot at the gunmen to allow his students to flee, before he was shot dead.

“He was holding a pistol in his hand,” Geology student Zahoor Ahmed told AFP news agency.

“Then I saw a bullet hit him. I saw two militants were firing. I ran inside and then managed to flee by jumping over the back wall.”

United Methodist Church Bans Intelligent Design Group From General Conference

Christian Post Report – Participants sing during the opening worship of the 2012 United Methodist General Conference held in Tampa, Fla., April 24.

The United Methodist Church has rejected an Intelligent Design group’s request to have an information table at the denomination’s 2016 General Conference.

Reaffirming a decision from December, the UMC’s Commission on the General Conference decided last week to not allow the Seattle-based Discovery Institute an information table at the Mainline Protestant denomination’s gathering in Portland, Oregon.

Diane Degnan, spokeswoman for the UMC, told The Christian Post that this was the first General Conference to allow for “outside exhibitors.”

“The Commission on the General Conference determined that the application by the Discovery Institute did not meet the guidelines established for exhibitors in that it was not consistent with the purpose of the exhibitor program,” said Degnan.

[The program] states that exhibits are not to provide a platform to survey or test ideas but to provide products, services and resources which are credible and proven to help local church ministries), and, in their opinion, it conflicted with our social principles.”

United Methodism’s official position on the Creation vs. evolution debate has been decidedly in favor of evolution, with their website offering links to works calling on Christians to embrace the theory.

In 2008, the UMC passed a resolution voicing opposition to any efforts to have ideas like Intelligent Design or Young Earth Creationism included in public education.

“… the General Conference of The United Methodist Church [goes] on record as opposing the introduction of any faith-based theories such as Creationism or Intelligent Design into the science curriculum of our public schools,” read the resolution.

Last October the Discovery Institute inquired the UMC about having an information table at General Conference.

John G. West, vice president of the Discovery Institute, told CP about the reasons for wanting an exhibit table at General Conference.

“We are a nonprofit educational and research organization, and we have sponsored information tables at a wide variety of conferences and events,” explained West.

“A staff member or ours who is a United Methodist brought to our attention the fact that the United Methodist General Conference would be held this year in Portland, Oregon, which is just a few hours away from our headquarters in Seattle.”

Last December, the Commission denied the Institute’s application and last Thursday reaffirmed the decision, reportedly referencing the 2008 resolution to justify their reasoning.

West told CP that he believed this reasoning was “ridiculous,” since his organization “does not favor introducing Intelligent Design into public school science classes” but rather thinks “students should learn about the scientific strengths and weaknesses of modern Darwinian theory.”

“More importantly, our information table was not focused on public school policy, but about resources dealing with science and faith; and nothing in the resolution they cited said United Methodists couldn’t believe in Intelligent Design or discuss it,” continued West.

“I would point out that the UMC’s slogan is ‘open hearts, open minds, open doors,’ and UMC leaders claim to be in favor of open dialogue. But banning us from even having an information table is not open-minded. It’s close-minded in the extreme.”

Muslim Who Shielded Christians in Kenyan Bus Attack Dies From Injures

Christian Post Report – A mortuary worker labels coffins for the students killed during an attack by gunmen at the Garissa University College, at the Chiromo Mortuary in Nairobi, April 8, 2015. Kenya’s Education Principal Secretary Richard Kipsang said the government had started releasing the bodies to their relatives ahead of the burials and that their target was about 20 per day. In the biggest single attack on Kenyan soil since the 1998 U.S. embassy bombing, gunmen from the Islamist militant group al Shabaab stormed Garissa University
College and killed 148 people and left dozen others injured on April 2, 2015.

One of the Muslim passengers who stood up and defended Christians during a bus terror attack in Kenya in December has died from a bullet wound he sustained during the ambush, but not before urging Christians and Muslims to live as brothers.

BBC News reported on Monday that Salah Farah died while receiving surgery for his injuries in the capital, Nairobi.

Farah and other Muslim bus passengers risked their lives during an Al-Shabaab attack in December to save fellow Christian passangers. While the attack left two people dead and three others injured, including Farah, authorities said at the time that many more would have been killed had the passengers not stood up to the gunmen.

In an interview with BBC following the attack, Farah, a father of five, revealed that the gunmen had initially offered him an escape.

“They told us if you are a Muslim, we are safe. There were some people who were not Muslim. They hid their heads,” he revealed.

Later in January, Farah told Voice of America News that Muslims and Christians can live peacefully together as neighbors.

“We are brothers. It’s only the religion that is the difference, so I ask my brother Muslims to take care of the Christians so that the Christians also take care of us. … And let us help one another and let us live together peacefully,” he said.

Religious leaders, including the Bishop of Garissa in Kenya, have praised the Muslims who stood up to Al-Shabaab during the attack. A number of the Muslims told the radical gunmen to “kill them together or leave them alone,” and refused to allow the terrorists to separate them from the Christian passengers.

“It is a very good thing; a concrete sign that Kenyan Muslims are against violence,” said His Exc. Mgr. Joseph Alexander.

“The Shabaab now know that they do not have the support of the Muslim community,” Alexander added. “We hope that we continue in this direction, because a year ago there was a similar attack that caused a massacre.”

Joseph Nkaissery, Kenya’s interior cabinet secretary, echoed the praise, saying that it shows Kenyans can stand together united against terrorism.

“We are all Kenyans, we are not separated by religion,” Nkaissery said. “We are one people as a nation. And this is a very good message from my brothers and sisters from the Muslim community.”

Al-Shabaab, which has been attacking Kenyan citizens for years, has used the tactic of separating Christians from Muslims and then killing the former on a number of occasions.

The militants slaughtered 152 people, mostly Christian students, during a massacre at Garissa University College in April 2015, which was one of the deadliest terror attacks the country has suffered.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet described Farah as a “true hero” following his death.

“We provided a plane to fly the body home to Mandera for burial. This is because the deceased died while trying to shield innocent Kenyans,” he added.

Pope Francis Asks Renowned Atheist Not to Convert to Catholicism?

Christian Post Report – Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove and Imam Khalid Latif shake hands in front of Pope Francis during an interfaith ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial Museum.

Italian atheist journalist Eugenio Scalfari has claimed that Pope Francis asked him in one of their interviews not to convert to the Catholic faith, though Catholic observers are noting it is likely the pontiff was being humorous.

The National Catholic Register reported in a story earlier this week that Scalfari, who has interviewed Francis on a number of occasions, spoke last week at the 40th anniversary of his La Repubblica newspaper about his relationship with the Roman Catholic Church leader.

“Many atheist friends have asked me: you now have such affection for Pope Francis that there’s a risk you’ll convert,” he said.

The journalist revealed that he has mentioned his friends’ concerns to Francis, but the pope indicated he does not expect Scalfari to convert.

“Since I want to talk to an atheist, because he stimulates me and I stimulate him, then if you convert, I’ve got to find another like you and it would be a hell of a job, so don’t convert!” Francis allegedly told him.

Scalfari added: “A pope that speaks like this … then I embraced him and he embraced me.”

The Register pointed out in a commentary that even if Scalfari is giving a truthful account of the Vatican leader’s words, it is likely that the pope “meant it as a joke, which would be in keeping with Francis’ playful humor.”

It also noted of another interview between Francis and Scalfari in 2013, where the pontiff spoke out against proselytism, and urged truthful dialog instead.

“Proselytism is solemn nonsense, it makes no sense. We need to get to know each other, listen to each other and improve our knowledge of the world around us,” Francis said at the time.

Francis has talked about atheists and their place in the world in past speeches, and in a May 2013 sermon he said that non-Catholics and atheists can do good as well.

“The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ: all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! ‘Father, the atheists?’ Even the atheists. Everyone! And this Blood makes us children of God of the first class!” Francis said at the time.

“We are created children in the likeness of God and the Blood of Christ has redeemed us all! And we all have a duty to do good. And this commandment for everyone to do good, I think, is a beautiful path towards peace,” he added.

Devon Franklin, Meagan Good Teach Free Online Course About Sex and Marriage

Christian Post Report – Devon Franklin and Meagan Good are giving people a crash course on tapping into God’s plan for relationships and marriage.

The celebrity couple has joined Empower U, an Essence magazine e-course that educates people on a multitude of topics that includes love, finances and health ahead of their upcoming book, The Wait: A Powerful Practice for Finding the Love of Your Life and the Life You Love. Franklin and Good will serve as instructors for the free online course called “The Wait 101: Discover the Love of Your Life,” which will teach lessons from their upcoming book.

According to a description for the lesson, the couple will help people “master delayed gratification for a life you love. If you want to tap into God’s masterful plan for your life and relationship, this course is for you. Get ready to learn the life-changing message that waiting — rather than rushing — can be the key for finding the person you’re meant to be with.”

While a complete guide can be found in the couple’s book, some topics they will tackle in the e-book will include the reason for considering the wait, strengthening willpower, controlling urges, dating, and prayer.

Franklin, who’s a Hollywood executive and pastor, and his wife, who’s an actress on the TV series “Minority Report,” previously revealed the reason they wrote a book about abstinence.

“We’re writing a book, it’s called The Wait,” she told late night TV host Jimmy Kimmel during an interview about the book last year. “I’d been in a couple relationships and I was like, ‘You know, this isn’t really working for me.’ I wanted to do something different.”

“Spiritually, I believe it’s what I should have done, and so, I was like, ‘You know, I’m going to try it this way,'” Good recalled.

In 2012, Good married Franklin. Although the Christian couple has been vocal about finding joy in one another, Good previously shed light on some fears she had before exchanging vows.

“What I feared about marriage was that I would lose my identity and be controlled or suffocated or like a caged lion. And what I found was the exact opposite,” Good told Upscale magazine in 2013. “I’m way more empowered, more content, more confident and just freer across the board.”

“Oddly, you would think in marriage it would make you feel like you have less freedom, but I’m finding that I have more freedom [since I’ve been married] because I trust myself more and I’m a little bit more absolute about my choices,” she added.

Ciara ‘Amazed’ by Russell Wilson’s Faith After Seahawks Season Ends in Defeat

Christian Post Report – Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson (3) congratulates Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (1) following the NFC Divisional round playoff game at Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina, January 17, 2016. The Panthers defeated the Seahawks 31-24.

Even though Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks didn’t make it past the Carolina Panthers in the NFC Divisional playoff game, his singer girlfriend Ciara Harris says she’s been inspired by the Christian quarterback’s faith throughout the season.

“My love. I am so proud of you,” the 30-year-old singer wrote in an intimate Instagram message to Wilson on Monday. “What a phenomenal season it’s been. You never cease to amaze me with your faith, will, integrity, resilience, and courage.”

Although the 27-year-old quarterback will not be making a third consecutive Super Bowl appearance, Ciara insists that he still serves as an inspiration to many.

“You always find a way to make things happen when it seems absolutely impossible,” she wrote. “Constantly inspiring me and others around. A rare breed you are. My champ. The best is yet to come. I love you.”

Wilson seemed to approve of the message, and took to Twitter to respond with a message of his own.

“Sweetest thing I’ve ever known. I’m so grateful for the loving, sweet, standup woman you are,” he tweeted.

The pair’s relationship has been well documented in media headlines and even church communities after Wilson, 27, revealed that God told him to lead Ciara in their vow of celibacy last year. In front of Pastor Miles McPherson’s The Rock Church congregation in San Diego, California, the quarterback said God revealed that he would lead his girlfriend in a vow of celibacy.

“I asked her ‘What would you do if we took all that other stuff off the table and did it Jesus’ way, no sex? I knew God had brought me into her life to bless her and for her to bless me, and to bless so many people with the impact that she has and I have,” Wilson told McPherson. “We’re not going to be perfect, by any means. But He’s anointed both of us and He’s calling for us to do something special.”

Ciara did not oppose Wilson’s decision to publicly share their celibacy and saw how it inspired different people.

“I run into different people and they’ll talk to me about their journey and their relationships, so I think that’s been really cool and it’s a healthy thing,” Ciara told E! News back in September. “It’s a healthy conversation we all get to have as adults. I’m not sweating it at all.”

While she had no idea Wilson would initially share the couple’s decision to abstain from sex until marriage, she insists she had no qualms about it.

“You know, when Russell talked about it, he was being honest. For what it’s worth, I think there are so many people like us,” Ciara told E! News. “We get to share real things. We’re real people.”

Along with telling McPherson and members of the church about his relationship with Ciara, Wilson also shared how God revealed that his team lost Super Bowl XLIX so that the world could see how he would respond.

“God says to me, ‘I’m using you. … I want to see how they respond. But most importantly, I want them to see how you respond,” Wilson revealed.

Lolo Jones Says God Healed Her Hip After Surgery in Record Time

Christian Post Report – Olympic bobsledder Lolo Jones poses for a portrait during the 2013 U.S. Olympic Team Media Summit in Park City, Utah, September 30, 2013.

Less than three months after undergoing hip surgery, Olympic track athlete Lolo Jones is gearing up for her comeback race and believes God allowed her to recover faster than any other athlete who has  undergone the procedure.

“They say I recovered faster than any other athlete who had hip surgery. Originally, I was told that there was absolutely no way I could recover in time for the indoor track season,” Jones revealed in an ESPN report Thursday. “Recovery went so well, I’m having my first pro race at the end of this month. I think God allowed me to have this breakthrough.”

After being on crutches for close to three weeks, the 33-year-old hurdler and bobsledder said she went from walking, to jogging and eventually hurdling. Two months after surgery, Jones began jumping hurdles again.

Still, the road to recovery was not an easy one. After Jones’ torn hip labrum resulted in her third major surgery in recent years, she admitted to feeling defeated.

“It was the first time in my career that I thought, I don’t know if I can try this again. Mentally, I was breaking down,” she told ESPN. “I love running and had a desire to go for Rio in 2016, but the setback was mentally draining. It messed with my confidence.”

“In my mind, I couldn’t imagine how I could come back quick enough. And after so many surgeries and attempts at the Olympic medal, I had a lot of anxiety and seriously thought about quitting,” she revealed. ” I had moments when I cried and wanted to give up. I went through the typical stages of feeling sorry for yourself.”

Although she has yet to earn a medal for the Olympic games where she competed for hurdling and bobsledding, Jones believes she is better off for the experience after coming up short and being publicly ridiculed.

“It proved to me how mentally tough I am, that I could pour my heart into a sport in the face of failure. This helps going into Rio, where people are saying, ‘She’s been injured, she’s too old, she should throw in the towel,'” Jones continued. “I have already faced failure. You’ve got to continue to pursue your dreams even when it hurts. It’s not how you start, but how you finish.”

After returning to hurdling for the first time in two months, Jones learned about the courage within herself and prayed that other people could do the same.

“Less than two months after hip surgery, I was able to hurdle for the first time. I was nervous to return,” Jones wrote on Instagram. “My prayer for you guys tonight is that courage always rises when things attempt to intimidate you. Today, I did baby hurdles.”

The athlete’s comeback at the Camel City Elite meet will take place in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Jan. 30.
