• Pastor Saeed Abedini is imprisoned in Iran for working with underground churches and his effort to build an orphanage.

Southern California pastor Greg Laurie, who led prayer rallies for the release of American pastor Saeed Abedini from an Iranian prison where he was held captive for more than three years, said Abedini’s freedom, announced on Saturday, occurred in God’s perfect timing.

“Christians around the world have been praying faithfully for the release of Pastor Saeed Abedini,” Laurie told this reporter late Saturday. “It did not happen as quickly as we had hoped, but it happened in God’s perfect timing. Now we want to remember to continue to pray for Saeed, his wife Naghmeh, and their children as they are finally reunited, as well as the rest of his family.”

Christians worldwide who prayed for the release of pastor Saeed Abedini were still waiting late Saturday night for word that Abedini and the other three Americans released overnight on Friday were on safe ground.

The four Americans released in Iran under the negotiated prisoner exchange included Washington Post reporter Jason Razaian, former U.S. Marine Amir Hekmati and Nosratollah Khosravi-Roodsari, and were still in that country Sunday as arrangements progressed to get them out, said a senior Obama administration official as reported by Fox News early Sunday morning. But CNN reported at 9:Christian Post Report – 1Christian Post Report – 1 am ET that a plane carrying at least three of the four Americans has taked off. On Sunday, the White House said that another American, student Matthew Trevithick, was also released but not as part of the prisoner swap, had departed from Iran.

The four Americans were exchanged for seven Iranians sentenced or awaiting trial in the United States, according to news reports. The U.S. released the seven Iranian men early Sunday.

The prisoner exchange occurred ahead of implementation of the landmark nuclear deal with Tehran and six world powers.

Laurie shared that Abedini’s wife, Naghmeh, told his wife, Cathe, that she and the children are rejoicing over the release of Saeed from prison.

“She is still waiting for information from the State Department as to when and where she could be reunited with her husband,” Laurie said. “Saeed’s sister, Zeebandeh Abedini, said that the family had been on an emotional roller coaster and that Saeed’s parents had been in tears since last night to this morning.

“She (Naghmeh) also quoted Psalm 30:Christian Post Report – 1Christian Post Report – 1–Christian Post Report – 12, ‘You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, to the end that my glory may sing praise to You and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever’ (NKJV).”

The “Iranian criminals for American hostages” deal, as some critics of the negotiation framed it, left many in the U.S., including Laurie, with a bittersweet sentiment.

“Personally, this does not make me feel any gratitude toward the nation of Iran,” he said. “They should not have taken Saeed prisoner to begin with, so this release is the very least they could do.

“It’s a good reminder that God is ultimately in control. When the wicked King Herod executed the apostle James and imprisoned Simon Peter, the church began to pray fervently (Acts Christian Post Report – 12).

That is what happened globally for Pastor Saeed as well and God has answered our prayers. God can move even ungodly people to accomplish His purposes. The Bible says “The king’s heart is like a stream of water directed by the Lord; He guides it wherever He pleases (Proverbs 2Christian Post Report – 1:Christian Post Report – 1 NKJV).”

When asked about the “bitter” part of the prisoner release negotiation, Laurie answered, “We can remember that God works all things together for good to those who love Him and are the called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). God allowed Pastor Saeed to suffer in this prison, even as He allowed the great apostle Paul to face similar circumstances.

“There are other Christian brothers and sisters suffering persecution from hostile nations to this day for daring to speak up for their faith as Pastor Saeed did. This is why we must pray that we never lose the freedom in the United States to openly proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

He added, “That is why we have booked one of the largest stadiums in America, AT&T Stadium, to proclaim the gospel on March 6 at Harvest America. I would ask that Christians would remember us in prayer, that many would come to believe in Jesus Christ.”

Christians Worldwide Stage Protests Against Norway for Seizing Children From Parents

Christian Post Report – The Bodnariu family.

International protests are being planned throughout the month of January after the Norwegian government removed five children from their Christian parents under accusations of “religious indoctrination.”

Protests are planned for the rest of January in the Czech Republic, Latvia, Austria, Romania, Spain, Ireland, India, Poland, and Australia, along with several other countries to speak out against the recent separation of five Christian children from their parents at the hands of government officials.

In November 2015, Norway’s child welfare services, known as Barnevernet, removed five children, including three sons and two daughters, from parents Ruth and Marius Bodnariu, residents of Naustdal and members of the Pentecostal Church.

The five children were removed from their family and separated into two foster homes after their school’s teacher and principal alerted the authorities that the children were being raised in a Christian household that taught “God punishes sin.”

The parents were then accused by child services of practicing “Christian radicalism and indoctrination.”

Hundreds of Romanian Pentecostals from all over the United States and Europe gathered at the Norwegian Embassy in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 8, 2016 to urge the Norwegian government to free the five children seized from the Bodnariu family by child protective services in November.

Along with accusations of “indoctrination,” the parents also faced accusations of physical abuse against their children, which they deny.

A petition and a Facebook page have been set up in support of the parents as they continue to appeal to have their family reunited again.

“They are just a normal Christian family trying to raise their children in the knowledge of God! There is no documented or otherwise abuse of any kind in this family,” an iPetition that has gained 25,000 signatures since November reads.

A Facebook page created in support of the family also calls on the Norwegian government to return the children to their parents.

“We will keep the calm and the confidence that God will work and bring this family together again, and we will do everything that is depending on us, and we will not stop until they are reunited!” the Facebook post reads.

Previous protests held by the family’s supporters have had thousands of attendees, The Christian Post reported last week.

Friends of the Bodnariu’s have defended the Christian family, arguing that accusations of physical abuse are unfounded.

“We have a God and God is on our side because God created the family. The tradition of the family has been ordained by God. If you are going to fight us and fight the Bodnariu family, you also fight against God,” Cristian Ionescu, pastor of the Elim Romanian Pentecostal Church in Chicago and organizer of a recent protest in Washington, D.C. said.

“Lately they are trying to characterize it as an abuse case. It never started as such. The teacher said that we need to bridge the gap between us and this family because they have radical Christian principles and we know that right now, everything that was considered decent two decades ago is considered ‘radical,'” Ionescu added.

Pakistani Christian Asylum Seeker Dies in Brutal Thailand Detention Center

Christian Post Report – A Rohingya Muslim illegal immigrant puts his hand on the railing inside the Immigration Detention Center in Kanchanaburi province July 10, 2013.

Another Pakistani Christian immigrant has died amidst the brutal conditions of a Thailand immigration detention center after guards refused to dispense medication to him.

The British Pakistani Christian Association reported this week that 53-year-old Pervaiz Ghouri Masih died while being detained at an immigration center in Bangkok, Thailand.

According to the association, Masih suffered from a heart condition and a tumor as authorities ignored his requests for medication and basic amenities, such as a chair to sit on.

“As a Christian Pervaiz was excited by the onset of Christmas, rejoicing that his saviour had come to Earth to reconcile man with God. His celebration of Christ’s birth was not met with a savory stuffed turkey and lip smacking cranberry sauce, but with cold boiled water with cucumber segments, described by his jailor’s as cucumber soup,” the association said in a statement shared with The Christian Post, announcing Masih’s death.

‘No table, chair or bed were provided for his comfort despite his sallow appearance and intimated poor health. No, Pervais was required to find what little space he could find on the floor of a room that can barely squeeze 100 people into it, crammed with over 150 detainees. Here Pervaiz had to eat, sleep and live out the final days of his wretched existence,” the statement added.

Masih, the father to six daughters, was taken to a hospital earlier this month after his health deteriorated drastically, but was unable to be saved and died of a heart attack alone, without the comfort of his family and friends.

The BPCA has spoken out against the deplorable conditions of Thailand’s immigrant detention centers before, with BPCA Chairman Wilson Chowdhry denouncing the treatment of Pakistani Christian immigrants by Thai authorities, who have recently been conducting large-scale raids to track down immigrants who have overstayed their visas.

“Pakistani Christian asylum seekers seized in such raids are taken either to the Immigrant Detention Centre or the Central Criminal Jail, and conditions in both are horrific with massive overcrowding, pitifully poor nutrition and the resultant disease epidemics,” Chowdhry said in a statement.

“In these latest raids at least 80 percent of the detainees were women and girls, along with babies and other children,” he added, referencing raids that took place on Dec. 20, 2015.

The BPCA announced in late December that 30-year-old Samina Faisal, another Pakistani Christian seeking asylum in Thailand, died in one of the country’s immigrant detention centers after she was refused essential medication for high blood pressure, hypertension, and kidney issues.

Both Faisal and Masih are just two of several victims of a Thai government crackdown that seeks to detain Pakistani Christians who have overstayed their visas in the southeast Asian country after fleeing persecution in Pakistan.

Billy Graham: It’s Easier to Face Adversity With God’s Help Than Without It

Evangelist Billy Graham (Photo: Reuters/Shannon Stapleton)

Christian Post Report – Evangelist Billy Graham speaks during his Crusade at Flushing Meadows Park in New York, June 25, 2005. Graham, 86, has preached the Gospel to more people in a live audience format than anyone in history – over 210 million people in more than 185 countries. His followers believe that the New York Crusade which runs from June 24 to 26 will be his last live appearance.

Although Christians might wish for more answers during times of adversity, turning to God is the most hopeful thing one can do, the Rev. Billy Graham advises in an installment of “Answers” on the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s website.

Graham addressed the question of what one should do when faced with extreme adversity, writing in the Q&A posted on Friday that although one’s struggles might appear insurmountable, they will seem far more manageable with the help of God.

His comments come after an inquirer explains their physical disability and adds: “You’ll probably tell me to turn to God, but what good will that do? God isn’t going to heal me. I don’t think He even cares.”

Graham reassures the reader that not only does God understand and care about their struggles, but he also loves them and wants to encourage them every day to get through this tough season in their life.

“Will it be better for you to go through life’s hard times with God or without him? Without him you’ll be left to your own resources, but are they enough to see you through the struggles you’re likely to face? I think you know the answer,” Graham writes, adding that a suffering person without God will “end up facing the future ‘without hope and without God in the world,’ (Ephesians 2:12).”

“By a simple prayer of faith ask Christ to come into your life today. Then thank Him for His love for you, and learn to experience His presence every day. God’s promise is for you: ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. … The Lord is my helper,'” Graham shares.

Graham has addressed the topic of adversity before, writing in 2004 that historians might call the current era “the age of anxiety.”

“Anxiety is the natural result when our hopes are centered on anything short of God and His will for us. When we make anything else our goal, frustration and defeat are inevitable,” Graham writes.

“Turn your eyes on Christ; worship Him. He will never fall or fail. He gives life balance, security and peace,” the Evangelical leader said in the 2004 post.

The BGEA noted in May 2015 that feelings of anxiety and worry move Christians farther away in their relationship with God, and such dark thoughts can become all-consuming without God’s help.

“At its best, anxiety distracts us from our relationship with God and the truth that He is ‘Lord of Heaven and Earth,’ (Matthew 11:25),” the association states on its website.

“At its worst, anxiety is a crippling disease, taking over our minds and plunging our thoughts into darkness,” the association continues, adding, “But God wants so much more for us than to walk through life full of fear, worry and anxiety.”

The BGEA goes on to cite Philippians Chapter 4 which calls on Christians to give their worries and fears up to God, and in turn, “the peace of God […] will guard your hearts and your minds in Jesus Christ.”

Perry Noble: If You Think Buying Lottery Tickets Will Send Me to Hell, I’ll See You There

Perry Noble

Christian Post Report – Screenshot of Pastor Perry Noble delivering a sermon at his South Carolina megachurch.

Perry Noble played Wednesday’s Powerball lotto, and for him it was no big deal. So when it comes to the debate against Christians — especially pastors — playing the lottery, frankly, the NewSpring megachurch pastor doesn’t want to hear it.

“I know, I know — spare me the ‘gambling’ lectures,” writes Noble in a blog post on his website Wednesday. “I remember when the lottery came to SC, Christians lost their mind and began railing about how the anti-Christ was on his way!”

Unlike some spiritual leaders, Noble doesn’t frown upon gambling and says it’s no different than playing the stock market.

“I would simply ask you, do you have money in the stock market? If so then guess what — you are gambling, you are putting your money into something hoping it will go up.”

It might be a waste of time to try to convince the clergyman of any methodology behind maneuvering the markets. “Don’t hand me that crap about how it’s not a gamble but a sure thing, because I saw people lose their life savings in the recession of 2008!” he says.

For those who argue that lottery winnings are dirty or “pagan” money, Noble counters with an example from the book of Exodus, when the Israelites used goods stolen from the Egyptians to build a tabernacle for God.

For Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot, the pastor says he purchased not only one lottery ticket, but 10. “Someone’s gotta win it!” he proclaims, and they did.

The $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot drawing yielded three winners who purchased tickets in California, Tennessee and Florida. Each ticket is valued at $528.8 million, according to Reuters.

Despite his jest, Noble doesn’t pretend that there are no downsides to gambling. “Is gambling bad?” he asks readers. “Yep, but sex can be as well. Do we get rid of that too?”

The pastor also acknowledges the many pitfalls that can befall those who gamble. “I’ve heard the heartbreaking stories of people spending their paycheck on lottery tickets and living in poverty.”

Nevertheless, the clergyman feels that, for those who allow gambling to ruin their lives, the habit is only a symptom of a deeper issue. “What people do not understand is the mindset of people who do this — it’s not the lottery, it’s something deeper, and if they did not have the lottery to blow their money on they would find something else.”

Just in case Noble is wrong about his position on gambling, the pastor lightheartedly shares his back-up plan.

“If this [gambling] turns out to be sinful and wrong one day then I promise to tell God ‘I’m sorry.’ And, if you think this action will send me to Hell, then I’ll most likely see you there.”

Saeed Abedini Released From Iranian Prison After Three Years

Christian Post Report – U.S. Pastor Saeed Abedini in this undated photo.” title=”Christian Post Report – U.S. Pastor Saeed Abedini in this undated photo.” name=”jpg” src=”http://images.christianpost.com/full/60039/u-s-pastor-saeed-abedini-in-this-undated-photo.jpg” class=”imgPhoto” width=”550″ height=”450″ /> <small class=(Photo: ACLJ.org)

Christian Post Report – U.S. Pastor Saeed Abedini in this undated photo.

Pastor Saeed Abedini has been released from prison in Iran after more than three years in captivity for his Christian faith.

Abedini, a U.S. citizen who has attracted high-profile advocates for his release including President Obama and members of Congress, was released on Saturday along with three other detained Americans: Washington Post correspondent Jason Rezaian; former Marine Amir Hekmati, and Nosratollah Khosavi-Roodsari, The Washington Post reported. Senior U.S. administration officials also confirmed the release of the four prisoners, according to CNN.

Abedini’s wife, Naghmeh, who has tirelessly campaigned for his release since his imprisonment, said in a statement, “This has been an answer to prayer. This is a critical time for me and my family. We look forward to Saeed’s return and want to thank the millions of people who have stood with us in prayer during this most difficult time.”

Pastor Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian Fellowship in California, who has publicly advocated and prayed for Abedini’s release, posted on his Facebook Saturday: “American Pastor,Saeed Abedini along with the 3 other American prisoners have been released from Prison in Iran! This is an answered prayer! For years the hashtag has been #SaveSaeed Now,we can update it to
#GodsavedSaeed”

The four Americans were released by Iran in exchange for at least six people imprisoned by the United States and also ahead of the nearing implementation of the July 2015 historic nuclear deal between Tehran and six world powers. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had previously said that Abedini would not be released until 19 Iranian prisoners held in the U.S. are granted their freedom.

American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), the legal group representing Abedini’s wife and family, noted that they first heard news that Saeed was released from his prison cell to Iran’s Central Intelligence agency late Friday night. It was not until Saturday morning that they were able to confirm that the pastor was really freed.
“This is a major victory. We are incredibly grateful to the more than 1.1 million people who have joined us in fighting across the globe for Pastor Saeed’s freedom,” said Jay Sekulow, chief counsel of ACLJ, in a statement.
“We’re delighted this day has finally arrived,” Sekulow continued. “We have worked and prayed that this day would finally arrive. And now, Pastor Saeed can return home.”

Pastor Saeed Abedini of Boise, Idaho, had served over three years of an eight year sentence in Iran for the supposed crime of endangering national security, but in reality it was because of his Christian faith. Abedini is a Muslim convert to Christianity and was in Iran working on building an orphanage when he was suddenly arrested. He had endured physical, emotional and psychological abuse during his imprisonment, according to his family, but resolutely stated that he would not renounced his Christian faith to escape punishment.
Naghmeh Abedini often shared that their two young children, aged 9 and 5, have missed their father terribly and it was difficult as a mother to endure her children’s pain. With news that Saeed has indeed been released, the family will finally be reunited after years apart.

“We are grateful for the release of Pastor Saeed. The prayers of the Body of Christ all over the world have been answered,” reflected Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission. “This day of celebration should remind us to pray and work all the more for the multitudes still persecuted for their faith all over the world, including in Iran. We hope and long for the day when Iran, and nations like it, are free from those who wish to enslave the conscience at the point of a sword.”

John Piper on Whether God Calls Us to Career We Don’t Enjoy

Christian Post Report – John Piper, founder of Desiring God and chancellor of Bethlehem College and Seminary, speaks from the book of Revelation at the Passion 2016 conference Sunday morning, January 3, 2016, in Duluth, Georgia.

Theologian John Piper responds to a question asked by a longtime listener of his podcast, whether a believer could ever be called by God to a lifelong career for which they do not enjoy.
“God does not like begrudging, joyless service,” Piper says, quoting Psalms 100:2 and Romans 12:8. in his podcast.

“But I think the implication in the Bible is not mainly that we should refuse to work until we find the work that we think we can enjoy, but that we should take the work that we can for the good of the family, the good of the community, the glory of God, and then pray our way into the enjoyment of it and shape it in whatever way we can so that it becomes more fruitful and more enjoyable,” argues the chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary.

In 1 Corinthians 7:21 Paul says that if a slave can obtain his freedom he should do so, which shows that Paul did not consider it ideal that we labor in a role that is miserable, explains Piper, who served as pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Minneapolis, Minnesota, for 33 years. “Nevertheless, the main counsel that Paul and Peter gave to slaves and to the rest of us … is this: ‘So, brothers, in whatever condition each was called, let him there remain with God.’ And the key words are ‘with God.'”

Piper remarks that the question the listener asked is applicable mostly in the “prosperous West.”

“One of the most surprising features of our culture which visitors from the two-thirds world are amazed at when they come is the stunning number of choices we have — choices in hundreds of kinds of cereals and fruits and vegetables and cars and houses and theaters and every manner of appliance and device,” Piper says. “And we tend to take all these choices for granted. Most places in the world, people do not have 100 possibilities in front of them for how to make a living. They may have one or two or three options given their village and the family they are in and the society they are in and, therefore, the question that was asked represents a very western question.”

Piper, author of more than 50 books, concludes by saying that God intends to give His people joy and thankfulness and a sense of usefulness in whatever He calls them to, just as Paul knew how to be content in every circumstance, as written in Philippians 4:11. “This is the essence of the Christian life: finding contentment in Christ and turning every circumstance and all of our work into living worship.”
