Pakistan Hangs Christian Man Tortured Into Confessing to Triple Murder as a 15-Y-O

Christian Post Report – The sister of Aftab Bahadur touches her brother’s face after his body was placed in a van to be taken for burial following his execution at Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore, Pakistan, June 10, 2015. Pakistan on Wednesday executed Bahadur, who was 15 when he was sentenced to death for murder and whose lawyers say was tortured into confessing, in a case that has prompted concern among rights groups and the United Nations.

Pakistani Prison officials have confirmed that a Catholic death row inmate, who was tortured into confessing to three murders over 23 years ago when he was just 15 years old, was executed on Wednesday.

Aftab Bahadur, who was convicted of the 1992 killings of Sabiha Bari and her two sons, was hanged at the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore, but not before he had one last chance to proclaim his innocence.

“Aftab Bahadur was hanged at District Jail Lahore on Wednesday at 4.30 a.m.,” an unnamed prison official told Reuters. “Before the hanging, he was crying and saying he was innocent.”

Representatives from Justice Project Pakistan, a Pakistani legal group, and Reprieve, a British-based legal organization, told AFP that the guilty verdict in Bahadur’s case relied on tainted evidence and forced confessions.

Additionally, critics of the sentencing argue that Bahadur was too young to receive the death penalty since he was only 15 at the time of the incident.

“Pakistan proceeded with Mr. Bahadur’s execution despite his having been sentenced to death when he was a child — in violation of both international and Pakistani law,” a Reprieve press release stated.

Relatives mourn the death of Aftab Bahadur following his execution at Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore, Pakistan, June 10, 2015. Pakistan on Wednesday executed Bahadur, who was 15 when he was sentenced to death for murder and whose lawyers say was tortured into confessing, in a case that has prompted concern among rights groups and the United Nations.

According to the press release shared with The Christian Post, Bahadur’s confession was extracted through the use of torture and police also tortured two other individuals in order to implicate Bahadur. Both witnesses have since recanted their testimonies and proclaimed Bahadur’s innocence.

“This is a truly shameful day for Pakistan’s justice system,” Maya Foa, director of the Reprieve death penalty team, said in a statement. “Aftab was subjected to almost every injustice conceivable. Just 15 years old when he was arrested, tortured and sentenced to death, he spent 23 years languishing on death row for a crime he didn’t commit before being executed in the early hours of this morning.”

Bahadur professed his innocence one last time in an essay, which was published on Tuesday and written from prison, Reuters has reported.

“But I do not know whether that will make any difference,” his essay stated. “I have not given up hope, though the night is very dark. … It would perhaps have been better not to have to think of what the police did to try to get me to confess falsely to this crime.”

One of the witnesses who testified against Bahadur, Ghulam Mustafa, a plumber that Bahadur worked for as an apprentice, was also charged in the crime and scheduled to be hanged on Wednesday. However, he was able to reach a settlement with the victim’s family that spared his life, Vatican Radio reported.

Although Mustafa initially testified against Bahadur, he recently stated that he and Bahadur had no involvement in the crime and explained that he was tortured into implicating Bahadur. Vatican Radio also reported that Mustafa even confessed to a “religious figure” that he lied about Bahadur’s involvement and added that he wasn’t even at the scene of the crime when it happened.

Foa added that the day before Bahadur’s execution, his lawyers filed for a stay on his execution; however, the High Court of Lahore did not give the lawyers enough time to produce evidence proving Bahadur did not commit the crime.

“To the last, Pakistan refused even to grant his lawyers the few days needed to present evidence which would have proved his innocence,” Foa explained. “This is a travesty of justice and tragedy for all those who knew Aftab.”

Christian leaders also called on the court to stay Bahadur’s death sentence. The Catholic Bishop of Karachi, Joseph Coutts, wrote a letter asking for a delay, while the Bishop of Rochester, Salvatore Ronald Matano, wrote another letter.

“Mr. Bahadur has now spent 23 years in prison — more than a life sentence — for a crime that the two witnesses on which his conviction rest now say he is innocent,” Matano’s letter reads. “To execute Mr. Bahadur in these circumstances would be to commit a grave injustice.”

On Thursday, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a statement condemning the fact that Pakistan has executed over 150 people in just six months.

“Pakistan has gone from zero to 154 executions in just six months, making it the third most prolific executioner in the world,” Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, the U.N. high commissioner for human rights, said in the statement.

“Yesterday’s execution of Aftab Bahadur, who was only 15 when he was convicted of a murder 23 years ago, and whose claims that he was tortured into confessing were unheeded, suggests a very troubling approach to the use of the death penalty in the country. Reports indicate that two witnesses who testified against Bahadur recanted their testimony, but were simply ignored.”

Christian Post Report – Tim Wright (right)won Super Bowl XLIX as a tight end for the New England Patriots.

Tim Wright, the Christian New England Patriots tight end NFL sources report is expected to be release by the team spoke up Thursday of staying humble despite the buzz about his job security.

Wright, 25, was traded to the Patriots from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014. He played in Super Bowl XLIX with the Patriots where the team claimed victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Right before reports surfaced that Wright would be released from the team, the Christian tight end tweeted about humility.

“God Honors Humility, Not pride,” he wrote on Twitter.

FOX’s NFL Media Insider Mike Garafolo reported Thursday that sources close to the situation announced that the Patriots would part ways with Wright.

“Patriots have released TE Tim Wright, source says. Had six TDs last season,” Garafolo announced on Twitter. “Tim Wright is subject to waivers. With 11 TDs over 2 years, that’s solid value in June. We’ll see who bites.”

Regardless of where the football player ends up next season, Wright seems to be focused on his faith and shares his beliefs on Twitter through select Bible verses. He also launched the Tim Wright Foundation last May.

The Wright Way Academy is a part of this foundation which gives underserved youth academic and athletic support. The New Jersey native said he plans to start focusing on the kids in his home state where he will create a model that will hopefully spread internationally.

“I want all the efforts of my partners and me to collaborate and create a platform for our youth to advance through all the various events that will take place this calendar year,” he said a report from The Network Journal. “My long-term goal is to produce a facility where all the aspects of a kid’s life can be organized in one facility, such as academics, athletics, nutrition, financial management and crime prevention.”

‘God Corrects but Does Not Punish,’ Says Creflo Dollar; World Has Twisted ‘Perception of What We Think God Is Like’

Creflo Dollar, Airplane (Photo: Facebook)

Christian Post Report – Televangelist Creflo Dollar.

Popular televangelist and founder of World Changers Church International, Creflo Dollar, says the world’s perception of God is twisted, particularly when it comes to His treatment of sin.

“The world has gone to extremes to twist and distort our perception of what we think God is like, and many people have been afraid of Him their entire lives,” began Dollar in an article posted on His website examining the difference between God’s correction and punishment.

“A popular notion among many is that He’s an angry, vengeful God, ready to strike us down when we sin and make mistakes. Because of that mindset, they attribute to God the bad, painful things that happen to them in life, erroneously assuming that those are His ways of punishing them for something they did wrong. Nothing could be further from the truth,” he continued.

“When God made us, He gave everyone the freedom to make their own choices in life, but sometimes we make bad choices. When our decisions don’t lead to the results we want, it’s easy to blame God, but we fail to realize that other factors operating are the devil, the world’s influences, and our own self-centeredness. Just like our earthly parents, God wants to console and comfort us when we’re hurting,” he added.

Dollar, who recently came under fire for seeking nearly $70 million in donations from the public to purchase a luxury private jet, is now offering a CD titled “Redeemed From Punishment,” examining God’s treatment of sin at a cost of $7.

“The concept of punishment involves fear and condemnation, which was a common theme in the Old Testament. When we accept and believe in what Jesus did for us on the cross, we become God’s own children, whom He loves too much to punish,” explained Dollar, citing Hebrews 12:5-7.

And Jon Bloom, president of Desiring God, agrees with Dollar.

“This is why, as a father, whenever I discipline my children, I always try to make it clear to them that I am not paying them back for their sins. That’s why I don’t use the term ‘punishment.’ I don’t want them to misunderstand and think I’m giving them what they deserve. That’s God’s job. And if they trust in Jesus, all their punishment was taken care of on the cross,” he explained in a post on the blog.

“Instead, I always use the terms ‘discipline’ or ‘correction’ and explain that I love them and my intention, even though the discipline is painful, is to correct and train them. I want them to know that their father loves them, cares for them deeply, and is taking great pains to point them toward the way of joy,” he said.

Breakaway Texas Diocese Wins Court Battle Over Church Property Claimed by Episcopal Church

Rt. Rev. Jack Leo Iker, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth, Texas of the Anglican Church in North America.

Christian Post Report – A judge has ruled that a diocese in Texas which broke away from The Episcopal Church over theological differences is the rightful owner of its church property.

Judge John Chupp of Tarrant County ruled Wednesday that All Saints Episcopal Church belongs to the breakaway Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth rather than the national denomination.

Bishop Jack Leo Iker, head of the breakaway diocese, said in a statement that he and his diocese “thank God for this wonderful ruling.”

“It means that in due course this great, historic parish will be restored to the biblical faith, orthodox teaching, and catholic religion of her founding members,” said Bishop Iker.

In November 2008, most of the Fort Worth Diocese’s clergy and lay representatives voted to leave The Episcopal Church over the liberal theological direction of the Mainline denomination.

The Iker-led diocese joined the Anglican Church in North America, a theologically conservative body that has become the ecclesiastical home of many Episcopalians who left the denomination in recent years.

A legal dispute erupted between the breakaway leadership and the national denomination, as well as those within the diocese who remain loyal to the denomination, over who rightfully owned the diocesan church properties.

In January 2011, Chupp ruled in favor of The Episcopal Church, ordering the diocese to “surrender all diocesan property as well as control of the diocese corporation” and “not to hold themselves out as leaders of the Diocese.”

The ACNA diocesan leadership appealed to the Texas Supreme Court and in August 2013 the state’s highest court decided that the case had to be reheard at the lower court level.

As the legal proceedings continued, the loyal members of the Episcopal Church also referred to themselves as the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth and were led by Bishop Rayford B. High Jr.

In March, Chupp issued a one-page order that granted the breakaway diocese’s second motion for partial summary judgment regarding the properties.

The exception to the order was the property of All Saints Episcopal Church of Fort Worth, since they were the only incorporated parish within the diocese.

“As a matter of law, the defendants are entitled to title, control, and use of all of the property at issue in this case, and such other and further relief as allowed by law,” read a statement given to The Christian Post by the breakaway diocese in March.

Regarding the recent inclusion of All Saints into the properties that Chupp has ruled belong to the ACNA diocesan leadership, Bishop High expressed disappointment over the decision.

“I believe our legal team did a very good job of presenting our case. I am disappointed in the decision but I know this will be appealed,” said High in a statement.

“This decision will not deter us from continuing to do the good work of the Gospel in our diocese, with determination and a good, loving, embracing spirit that has been our mark of faith.”

‘Don’t Cheat on a Loyal Woman, God Will Punish U’ Says Nicki Minaj After Ex-Boyfriend’s Song Is Leaked

Nicki (Photo : REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni)

Christian Post Report – Rapper Nicki Minaj

Christian Post Report – Rapper Nicki Minaj believes God punishes those who are unfaithful to their mates in relationships.

Minaj, the 32-year-old rapper, took to Twitter one day after her ex-boyfriend Safaree Samuels of 12 years appeared on a rap song about their tumultuous relationship. In Samuels’ leaked song titled “Love The Most,” the rapper spoke about his frustration with not being able to let the world know he was in a relationship with the superstar rapper known as Nicki Minaj.

After pouring his heart out in the five minute song, Minaj took to Twitter and made an apparent swipe at her ex-boyfriend not to make a “pity party” for himself. In a series of cryptic tweets, the rapper whose real name is Onika Maraj, insinuated that God might be punishing Samuels for being unfaithful to her.

“Lesson: Don’t cheat on a loyal woman. God will punish u,” Minaj tweeted in a message that she since deleted. “When he does, tell people the truth. The truth may set u free. Love. Always. (SIC).”

While she wrote that the 12 year relationship had a rocky end but great run, she also declared her love for new rapper boyfriend Meek Mill,28.

“..Just for the record, I’m in love with Meek,” she wrote, before making it clear that she is happy these days because she is a good person.

“God gave me a good heart. I always let ppl get over on me way too long. But that’s why I’m blessed,” Minaj wrote. ” I’ll always b blessed. May God keep u (SIC).”

Minaj identifies with the Christian faith, and her mother Carol Maraj previously spoke to The Christian Post about helping shape her daughter’s spiritual identity.

“My life as a Christian and believer was opened to Onika. As her career continued to thrive, she developed more concerns about life,” Carol Maraj previously told The Christian Post. “She knew I believed in the power of prayer, therefore, she constantly called me and our pastor, to pray for different concerns she may have…I believe by her acknowledging the power of prayer, and her strong desire to tithe together with a praying mother, contributed to her success.”

Church Rejects PETA’s $500 Donation to Fix Jesus Sign If It Includes: ‘Road to Hell Is Paved With Bacon’

Hi-Way Pulpit (Photo: Courtesy of Dixie Baptist Church)

Christian Post Report – The “Hi-Way Pulpit,” a 45-year-old sign sponsored by the Dixie Baptist Church of Clarkston, Michigan, located at Northbound I-75, exit 93.

A congregation in Michigan seeking to restore a church sign has rejected a $500 donation from animal rights group PETA amid concerns over the conditions of their offer to help, but only if they can include their own message under Jesus Christ, saying: “Road to hell is paved with bacon.”

J. Todd Vanaman, pastor of Dixie Baptist Church of Clarkston, told The Christian Post that the sign, known as the “Hi-Way Pulpit,” is “not a billboard advertisement.”

“PETA offered $500 for a one week advertisement for their cause, which is not in keeping with our purpose, therefore we respectfully declined,” said Vanaman.

“While we do not believe in animal abuse, we do believe that God has given man the dominion and stewardship of His creation. After the flood, God gave Noah authority and permission to eat meat.”

Vanaman also told CP about the progress made in raising funds for repairing the 45-year-old sign, which stands at 50 feet tall and 24 feet wide.

“In this first week nearly $8,000 has been donated for this project. The testimonies posted by many have been wonderful to hear as to the way the Lord has used our sign to touch lives and hearts,” said Vanaman.

“The portrait itself needs to be restored and other exterior repairs are necessary. … We are discussing bids with companies for the work to be done.”

According to local media, among the changes desired PETA wanted to substitute the sign’s message “Are You on the Right Road?” with their statement “The Road to Hell is Paved With Bacon. Go Vegan.”

PETA spokeswoman Sarah King told CP that her organization became aware of the Michigan sign via research done by Jesus People for Animals, which is PETA’s Christian outreach division.

“We immediately knew that we wanted to help the church reach its fundraising goal while also addressing the widespread abuse of God’s creatures on farms and in slaughterhouses,” said King.

“As Christians, we have been called not only to proclaim the Gospel but also to protect God’s creatures, and one of the best ways that we can do that is by enjoying delicious vegan food that no one had to die for.”

Regarding Dixie Baptist Church’s rejection of their donation, King told CP that she was “disappointed” by the their decision.

“[We] hope that next time church officials sit down to eat, they’ll remember that we can make the world a more compassionate place for animals simply by leaving them off our plates — swapping beans for beef, vegan wings for those made of flesh, and almond milk for cow’s milk,” said King.

“Going vegan is just one way in which many Christians are applying Christian principles to our everyday lives and is an increasingly common expression of the church’s hope for a better world.”

Pat Boone Says ‘AD The Bible Continues’ Is Fighting Every Kind of Moral Depravity on TV

Christian Post Report – Adam Levy as Peter in NBC’s “A.D.: The Bible Continues.”

Legendary Christian singer and actor Pat Boone is praising NBC’s “A.D. The Bible Continues” for “fighting every kind of moral depravity” on television today.

The best-selling author, whose career in music, television, and movies has spanned more than 60 years, is appearing as a guest on this week’s installment of the show’s companion web series, “Beyond A.D.” In an interview with The Christian Post, Boone drew parallels between “A.D.” and the Bible-based entertainment that was available at the start of his career.

“There was [1956 film] ‘The Ten Commandments’ and there were great films, and they really had a great impact on people,” said Boone. “It was a more moral and rich time – now the gospel is being preached to people who don’t want to hear it and there are all kinds of enemies. Right now, ‘A.D.’ is fighting every kind of cultural and moral depravity on TV and cable channels and on regular broadcast. You have to fight to be heard and fight for the ratings, [and] it is winning.”

The latest television series from producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett premiered on NBC on Easter and has just three episodes left this season. “A.D.,” which follows the first 10 chapters in the Book of Acts. It has received critical acclaim and Boone says he understands why.

Ryan Corbin and his gradfather Pat Boone

“It’s magnificent, it’s beautiful, it’s factual, and it was never needed more than it is right now,” said the legendary singer. “People are spiritually hungry, and they’re looking for answers and they listen to everything. [What] People thought they could count on in this life… it’s not happening, it’s not working out, and you know it’s just time for everybody to know the truth. The Bible says that the Gospel will be preached to every creature and then the end comes. And I think we’re getting very close to the end. Definitely.”

Explaining more on why he thinks the End Times are near, Boone pointed to Scripture and “all the signs” at present.

“Jesus said we will know the signs and they’re all around us,” the television personality continued. “Certainly Israel becoming a nation in a day is one, a major one. There’s earthquakes, famines, pestilence, unrest, and the world choosing a side against Israel now, [we are] headed toward an Armageddon.”

Boone added that “Islamics want an Armageddon.”

“They want an Armageddon because they think that will bring their version of the messiah, and so they are perfectly thrilled to create an Armageddon,” the actor continued. “And the Bible says there’s gonna be one. And it is to revolve around Israel – they are looking for an atomic bomb for one reason; to blow Israel up. It’s not gonna happen, but there’s gonna be a cataclysmic war. And I’ve stood on the place where its going to happen, in the area of Megiddo in Israel. I’ve been there 20 times. We’re in a time where everybody [needs to] get their lives straightened out.”

“A.D. The Bible Continues” airs on NBC Sundays at 9 p.m. ET. “Beyond A.D.” will be available for streaming here at 9 a.m. ET on Sunday, June 14, featuring Boone as well as Father Edward Benioff, Samuel Rodriguez, and Paul Baloche.

Christians Displaced by ISIS Are Coming to the Aid of Iraq’s Religious Minorities; Yazidi Leader Says ‘Our Faith Does Not Help Us’ but the Church Helps Everyone

Michael Nazir-Ali (Photo: The Christian Post / Samuel Smith)

Christian Post Report – Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali speaks at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. on June 10, 2015.

WASHINGTON — Although Iraqi refugees who fled their homes to escape ISIS are now homeless and living in tents, containers and other makeshift housing arrangements in the Kurdish north, Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali said Wednesday that the morale of displaced refugees is much higher than the media is portraying.

Nazir-Ali, who is the former Anglican Bishop of Rochester, an author and current president of the Oxford Centre for Training, Research, Advocacy and Dialogue, explained during a discussion at the Heritage Foundation that the non-discriminatory involvement that the Christian church community has put forth in supporting Iraqi refugees of all faiths has led those displaced by the barbaric Islamic State to be uncharacteristically hopeful.

Along with an ecumenical delegation of bishops, Nazir-Ali recently visited with refugees in northern Iraq as a guest of the Chaldean Catholic Church and was astounded to find that the refugees, who have lost just about everything due to ISIS, were in much higher spirits than he was led to believe before his visit.

“I had expected a fearful ragbag of refugees with no morale, living under very bad conditions and so on. This is not, in fact, the case,” Nazir-Ali explained. “There is no substitute for going. What I had been sold in the media about the condition of the refugees was quite different from what actually I found.”

One of the two main reasons that Nazir-Ali, who also previously served as Bishop of Raiwind, Pakistan, attributed to the positivity among Iraqi refugees was the presence of the churches, most notably the Chaldean church.

“What has given the refugees this sense of hope is the work of the churches. I know the media doesn’t talk about it but, particularly the work of the Chaldean Catholic Church, the eastern church to which most Iraqi Christians belong, has been beyond criticism.” the 65-year-old bishop said. “They have delivered without discrimination to refugees, whether they don’t belong to their own denomination and even to those who are not Christian.”

Iraq (Photo: Reuters/Stringer)

Displaced Sunni people, who fled the violence in the city of Ramadi, arrive at the outskirts of Baghdad, April 17, 2015. Iraqi security forces fought Islamic State militants at the gates of the western city of Ramadi on Friday, and local authorities warned it was in danger of falling unless reinforcements arrived soon.

The bishop explained that the church has been instrumental in providing various necessities to refugees such as shelter, clothing, food and other basic needs. The church’s role has been so vast in helping not only Christians but also other religious minorities, that Yazidi leaders have even told Nazir-Ali how grateful they are for the church.

“Yazidi leader said to me in Dohuk, he said that ‘Our faith does not have the structure to help us in this situation. The church has the structure and helps not only its own people but also ourselves,'” Nazir-Ali explained. “I think this is just something for the record.”

Nazir-Ali also attributed the high morale of the refugees to the generosity of the Kurdish Regional Government, which has accommodated and welcomed all refugees, while the Kurdish peshmerga has held its ground against ISIS’ advances.

“One [reason] is the hospitality of the KRG and the relative safety that they have provided the Christian and Yazidi refugees within the KRG,” he stated. “This is admirable in a region like that for a government to provide such hospitality to such large number of refugees, who may well change the identity of the KRG because most of these refugees are not Kurdish.”

Although the KRG and the churches have provided great amounts of aid to ensure the well-being of the refugees, Nazir-Ali said that there is still a need for more support from the international community.

“We still need emergency help for refugees such as shelter. People are still living in containers  — they are made very nice but, nevertheless, they are containers,” he said. “The church has been able to rent flats for people. There are three families to a flat, rather than one family to a flat, so they are overcrowded. Unused buildings are used.… Again, the facilities are very basic there.”

Another concern that the bishop has is that although younger refugee children have access to education, teenagers are not being educated, which he claims is a “dangerous” sign.

“It’s a recipe for trouble in the future,” Nazir-Ali asserted.

Nazir-Ali contended that there also needs to be a partnership that is designed to help refugee families start their own businesses and figure out ways they can make money and get back on their feet.

“I believe that there could be a very good initiative with the KRG and the churches in providing microenterprise opportunities for families, men and women, so that people can earn their living,” he argued. “Some of them are earning their living by working outside in the general community but many are not. I think indefinite idleness can not be good for people.”

There is at least one organization, called Preemptive Love, that — among many other things — has already helped some Iraqi refugee families start up their own businesses and plans to spend between $100,000 and $150,000 to send refugee children back to school.

Although many Iraqi refugees are looking for ways to completely leave Iraq, Nazir-Ali explained many displaced Iraqi Christians want to return to their homelands in the Nineveh Plain but won’t without international protection. He said it is possible for the international protection to be led by non-Western entities.

“It is not necessary for such a force to be Western or Western led,” Nazir-Ali contended. “I give the example of the African Union forces in Somalia, which has been quite effective and supported by the international community but not a Western force. However the force is constructed, I think something like that is necessary.”

Christian Millionaire Wayne Huizenga Jr. Shares Conversion Story With 500 NYC Business Leaders at Luis Palau Event

Luis Palau (Photo: The Christian Post/Vincent Funaro)

Christian Post Report – Renowned evangelist Luis Palau and businessman Wayne Huizenga Jr. share the Gospel with 500 business leaders in New York City at the Marriott Marquis Hotel on Tuesday, June 9, 2015.

NEW YORK — Christian millionaire Wayne Huizenga Jr. shared his conversion testimony with 500 business and community leaders in New York City Tuesday at a breakfast hosted by renowned evangelist Luis Palau in preparation for the upcoming NY City Fest event set for July 11 in Central Park, Manhattan.

Palau and his son, Kevin, hosted the breakfast to discuss the upcoming festival, which will feature performances from Christian singers including Toby Mac, Mandisa and Matt Redman on the Great Lawn of Central Park.

Huizenga, son of billionaire businessman and co-founder of three Fortune 500 companies Harry Wayne Huizenga, was invited by the Palaus to share his story of salvation.

Huizenga, who has shared his testimony before, was raised in the Dutch Reformed Church which he described as “strict.” He was turned off by the church, however, after his mother was booted out for divorcing his father.

He said his stocks in Blockbuster made him a rich man at a young age, but he told the crowd that he felt something was still missing from his life.

“Dad was successful, we owned the [Florida] Marlins, the [Miami] Dolphins, the [Florida] Panthers, three professional sports teams. I flew around on his private jet. [I thought] it doesn’t get any better than this. But God had a plan,” Huizenga said.

By this time he was married with children and his mother challenged him to raise them with some sort of grounding and recommended he return to church. He told her he didn’t have the time for church since he was partying on the weekends and engaging in excessive drinking. He took her words more seriously, however, after meeting Navy Captain Brad McDonald who he frequently accompanied on fishing trips.

“He didn’t swear a lot, he didn’t drink in excess like I did. He had a peace about him that was unlike anyone I’d had ever seen before,” Huizenga continued.

After spending about three years getting to know McDonald, Huizenga decided he wanted to be more like McDonald and that’s when the captain suggested a relationship with Christ.

“He told me I had a hole in my heart, not a physical hole. [He said] That hole in your heart can’t be filled with anything, but a relationship with God,” Huizenga explained.

And he listened.

After attending a few different churches, Huizenga said he truly accepted Christ and repented during an altar call at a megachurch when a pastor told him he believed God had a purpose for his life.

“It was kind of uncontrollable for me. I heard this voice inside me say: ‘Sit down, everybody’s looking at you. You look foolish.’ There was no way of me getting back into that chair,” he said.

Huizenga stood in front of 3,500 people and accepted Christ that day. He continued his partying lifestyle, but said he felt guilty after engaging in those activities he once enjoyed. God had changed him and one of his Christian friends told him that he “was taking God partying” by living a double life. He eventually changed his lifestyle.

His newfound faith also made him realize that what he had before was “a relationship with church, but not a relationship with God.” He was now able to do more than just carry a Bible and look like a Christian.

Huizenga’s mother later fell gravely ill and died, but his faith allowed him to care for her in a way he would not have been able to before meeting Christ.

Palau followed up Huizenga’s testimony by stating the millionaire is a “new man” and reiterated the point he made about having a relationship with the church, but not God or Christ.

“Make sure that your retirement plan includes eternal life,” Palau added.
