Why Is the Salvation Army Joining in on the White and Gold, Black and Blue Dress Debate?

The Dress (Photo: The Salvation Army)

This well-known dress is used in The Salvation Army PSA for domestic violence.

Christian Post Report – One picture of a dress nearly “broke the internet” last week when people were trying to figure out if it was white and gold or black and blue. Now, the Salvation Army is capitalizing off of the trend in order to bring awareness to domestic violence.

In a new advertising campaign, the South African chapter of the Salvation Army debuted a PSA with a woman in a white and gold version of the dress. Aside from the lacy garment, the woman is also sporting black and blue bruises on her face and legs.

Jaylen Christie, public relations coordinator for the Salvation Army of Orlando, spoke to The Christian Post about the reason the dress was used in the new campaign.

“Since the dress caused such a positive stir nationwide and garnered so much attention, the Salvation Army decided to capitalize on that by bringing awareness to domestic violence,” Christie told CP. “So we thought that it would be a good idea to bring attention to domestic violence by tying that message in with ‘the dress.’ So far, so good. We’ve been doing just that.”

While Christie’s Orlando chapter is just one of many Salvation Army organizations around the world, he said they all collectively work to keep up with current trends to help spread awareness.

“We try our best to stay current and we are here to meet human need in the name of Jesus without discrimination. We do a plethora of different things, not just advocating against domestic violence,” he told CP. “But we’re here to meet the needs of the community. We’re frequently rising to the occasion to meet that need.”

Christie said he is pleased that the advertisement is gaining so much steam and shedding light on domestic violence in a different way.

“A lot of individuals have been using the hashtag #stopabuseagainstwomen and it’s going very well,” Christie told CP. “It warms my heart to know that we’re getting such positive feedback from individuals that want to end domestic violence or individuals that may be in a situation and they’re able to speak up.”

ISIS Terrorists Watch ‘Teletubbies’, ‘Game of Thrones’ When They Are Not Out Committing Atrocities, Released Hostage Says

Nicolas Henin (Screengrab: BBC)

Former ISIS hostage Nicolas Henin discusses his time in captivity with BBC News.

Christian Post Report – A released Islamic State captive, who says he was imprisoned with the two beheaded American journalists in Syria, revealed recently that when ISIS jihadis aren’t terrorizing the streets of Raqqa, they spend their downtime watching the children’s television program “Teletubbies” and playing child video games.

Former ISIS hostage, Nicolas Henin, a French journalist who was held hostage for 10 months and released by the terrorist group in April of 2014, told BBC News that even though ISIS captors claim to hate America and western ideals, he noticed that the militants’ interests were heavily influenced by Western culture.

“The discussions that we had with them, I could just notice that these jihadis have little to do with the local culture— Arab or Muslim culture – they are children of our societies,” Henin contended. “They speak our language —I don’t mean they speak French or English or German – they have the same cultural references that we have. They watch the same movies as us, play the same video games our children play. They are products of our culture, of our world.”

Henin was asked what kind of shows the militants watch and he responded, “It ranges from the Teletubbies to Game of Thrones.”

Although ISIS militants and leaders proclaim that many of the atrocities the group commits are acts justified by Islam, Henin also said that the militants had a hard time explaining their own brutal acts and some of them even held regrets.

“I think there was [doubt in their minds], yes,” Henin explained. “Also, there was a lot of bad faith because they had to justify themselves and for some of their acts, they were just impossible to justify. I remember with couple of them we had discussions that could show that their convictions were a bit fragile and that they had maybe even had regrets over what they were doing.”

Henin also said that he noticed that most ISIS recruits when they first arrive to the caliphate, come with the mindset and belief that they are there to help Syrian “victims”. However, they quickly realized the true extent of ISIS’ horrific nature.

“I do believe that the initial engagement of many of these fighters is that they truly believe they are going there to help victims and that they will be in position to help,” Henin said. “But very quickly, they turn to criminal.”

Henin further explained that ISIS acts similar to a street gang when it comes to forcing their new recruits to commit their first atrocious acts. Once the new recruits commit their first heinous acts, they have lost their innocence in regards to ISIS’ brutal ways.

“The recruits are fragile people,” Henin asserted. “As soon as they arrive, they kind of hook them, and for instance they push them to commit a crime and then there is no way they can turn back.”

Henin was asked to talk about his relationship with Mohammed Emwazi, the man believed to be featured in the publicized ISIS beheading videos of American journalists Steven Sotloff and James Foley, and is notoriously known as “Jihadi John.” Because fellow British hostage John Cantlie is still alive and still held captive by the group, Henin did not feel comfortable talking specifically about “Jihadi John.”

Although the emergence of Sotloff and Foley’s beheading videos did not occur until months after Henin was released by ISIS, he does recall the group executing one Russian hostage, Sergey Gorbunov, that was held captive with them before he was released. Henin added that the rest of the hostages held a small ceremony in Gorbunov’s honor.

“Everyone paid tribute to him,” Henin said. “John Cantlie spoke first and then we held a minute’s silence.”

Henin has recently released a children’s book called Will Daddy Hedgehog Come Home? He said the idea for the book was written on a piece of cheese wrapping while he was in captivity with fellow French journalist hostage Pierre Torres.

The story derived from a game that the hostages would play that was created by fellow captive David Haines, a british aid worker and was beheaded by the group last September.

“The aim was to say which animal portrays you the best,” Henin said. “I spoke about being a hedgehog. I like the idea of [having] good protections — even though the protection of a hedgehog is totally stupid.”

“I would make myself into a ball but nothing ever really worked,” Henin continued. “As a hostage, you are just a puppet.”

The book was released on Wednesday by the French publishing company Flammarion.

Archdiocese of NY Offers Free 2-Year Graduate Program for Members Ready for Challenge of Church Management

Cardinal Timothy Dolan (Photo: Reuters/Alessandro Bianchi)

Cardinal Timothy Dolan (C) attends a consistory led by Pope Francis at the Vatican, Rome, Italy, February 12, 2015. Pope Francis, starting two days of closed-door meetings with the world’s Roman Catholic cardinals, on Thursday called for greater efficiency and transparency in the Church’s troubled central administration, the Curia.

Christian Post Report – Catholic church members in New York can now contribute to their local parishes by way of a newly instituted program that provides a free graduate degree to laypeople who are willing to take on the challenges of managing their church’s administrative duties.

As part of an effort to take managerial burdens off of clergy, the Church introduced a new two-year online training program Wednesday that’s being offered through a partnership with Villanova University’s Center for Church Management and Business Ethics, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The archdiocese is aiming to enroll 50 people in the program who will earn a master of science in church management degree when it’s complete.

These managers will then be hired by individual parishes once the program is complete. The archdiocese believes the move is necessary for the betterment of all Catholics. It will be applied to the New York archdiocese, which spans from Staten Island to Saugerties, New York. It will help in the Church’s effort to reorganize 100 parishes, which will result in 55 new ones and the closing of dozens of others.

New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan expressed in the past that he hopes the process of realignment will liberate clergy to do more pastoral work and not limit them to “replacing boilers and leaky roofs in 150-year-old parishes that are one-third filled on Sundays.”

“The day of old, fat, balding bishops like me being the best spokespeople for the Church is long gone: now needs to have trained, competent laypeople to represent them,” Dolan said in April of last year when opening the IX Professional Seminar for Communications Offices.

Having laypeople perform some of the task normally designated to clergy will also take some pressure off the pastors of some parishes, according to William Whiston, the chief financial officer of the Archdiocese of New York.

“If the parish is going well, the pastor has support,” he said. “It reduces the pressure of the archdiocese to help the pastor and the parish to operate.”

The Christian Post contacted Whiston for comment but he did not respond by press time.

The diocese of Camden New Jersey formed a similar arrangement with Villanova to train church managers.

CP contacted the Archdiocese of New York for comment but they did not respond by press time.

Christian Post Report – San Jose Sharks’ Logan Couture (39) reacts after scoring the game-winning goal against Los Angeles Kings in the overtime period during Game 3 of their NHL Western Conference semifinal playoff hockey game in San Jose, California, May 18, 2013.

The two teams have met twice this regular season, both getting a win apiece.

In the first meeting, the Blackhawks started perfectly, getting a 3-1 lead after the first period behind goals from Trevor van Riemsdyk, Brent Seabrook and Niklas Hjalmarsson. Joe Pavelski scored twice in the game but was unable to get any help from his teammates as Chicago went on to win the game 5-2.

In their second meeting, the Sharks were able to get revenge as they played as hosts. Melker Karlsson opened the game with a wrist shot inside the first six minutes of the match, and Joe Thornton closed things out with a backhand in the 59th minute to get two points. Antti Niemi was excellent for the Sharks, saving all 31 attempts from Chicago, notably going saving three shot attempts while they were shorthanded.

Then-Blackhawk player Antti Raanta took the goalie responsibility instead of Corey Crawford and the Fin had a long night. He only faced 20 shots but only stopped 18.

As for injuries, Matt Irwin is the most recent San Jose player to be sidelined as he suffered an upper body injury early in the month. Raffi Torres and Mike Brown have been out for a long period as they suffered knee and leg injuries, respectively, back in December.

Good news is that Brown is now listed as day-to-day.

The Blackhawks may be only missing one player, but the absence of Patrick Kane is a big blow to Chicago. The winger crashed into the boards against the Carolina Panthers and underwent surgery to repair a left clavicle fracture.

His timeline to return is said to be around 12 weeks.

NASCAR Reinstates Driver Kurt Busch

Kurt Busch reuters.com

Kurt Busch has been suspended by NASCAR

Christian Post Report – Kurt Busch has been reinstated by NASCAR and given a waiver to be eligible for the Chase for the Championship.

Under NASCAR rules drivers must run in all the races to be eligible, but waivers have been granted in the past. Busch will need to be in the top 30 in points (and win a race or be in the top 12 in points) to be eligible under regular rules. That is something of a long shot given the fact he has missed three races while dealing with the fallout from his legal issues in the State of Delaware.

Chevrolet also ended their suspension of the driver and Stewart-Haas Racing has publically stated Busch will be back in the #41 car this weekend at Phoenix International Race way.

“As we stated last week, the elimination of the possibility of criminal charges removed a significant impediment to Kurt Busch’s return to full status as a NASCAR member,” NASCAR stated. “As we stated last week, the elimination of the possibility of criminal charges removed a significant impediment to Kurt Busch’s return to full status as a NASCAR member.”

“We therefore have decided to move him to indefinite probation and waive the Chase requirement. He has fully complied with our reinstatement program during his suspension and the health care expert who conducted his evaluation recommended his immediate return,” they continued.

“We appreciate the steps Kurt Busch has made while following NASCAR’s process for reinstatement,” Joe Custer, Executive Vice President of SHR, stated. “He has taken this path seriously, which allowed him to return to our race team. With his reinstatement and the conclusion by the Delaware Attorney General to not file charges, our focus is on the future.”

SHR as a team has had a lot of distractions since last fall with the Busch situation and the tragedy involving co-owner Tony Stewart. Now the team looks to put those things behind them and get back to racing. Teammate Kevin Harvick won the most recent Sprint Cup Series race in Las Vegas and the team will be looking to run strong again this week in Phoenix.

Boston Celtics vs Indiana Pacers Live Stream Free: Watch NBA 2015 Basketball Online (Start Time, Preview)

In their third meeting of the season, the Boston Celtics face the Indiana Pacers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in the regular season of the NBA on Saturday night. The game will start at 7 p.m. ET and can be watched online through live stream (details below).

Hibbert Brian Spurlock/USA TODAY Sports

Christian Post Report – Roy Hibbert (left) of the Indiana Pacers.

The two teams have split the first two matches, with both proving to be an intense affair.

In the first, Boston pulld a 101-98 win at home, behind 17 points from Jared Sullinger. Ex-Celtic Jeff Green also had 15 points to help in the win as the Celtics shot 46% from the field.

Indiana played without David West, but got solid production from Roy Hibbert. The towering centre scored 22 points, going 8-of-16 from the field while pulling down 11 rebounds.

The main difference was in the three-point shooting, with Boston draining 33% of their shots while Indiana were only successful in 26%.

When the scene shifted to Indiana, the Pacers shot much better from beyond the arc, draining 39%.

Hibbert had another double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while C.J. Miles added 17 in 37 minutes of play.

Avery Bradley led the Celtics with 23 points in the loss, while Evan Turner pulled down an impressive 15 rebounds in the night.

Boston guard Isaiah Thomas will miss this coming match with back ailments, and will hopefully be back next week. They will also miss Sullinger who injured his foot in February and will miss the rest of the season.

Indiana are relatively healthy and only have Paul George out as the star guard is still recovering from his broken leg that he suffered while training with the USA national team.

The Pacers have been red-hot, winning their last seven matches as they make a push for the playoffs. They now hold a 30-34 record and are seventh in the East – holding a 1.0 game advantage over the eighth-seeded Charlotte Hornets.

Boston are one game behind the last play-off spot, going 28-36 but have won their last three contests. With the season winding down, a win over Indiana may go a long way in their hopes to get back to the post-season.

New York Rangers vs Florida Panthers Live Stream Free: Watch NHL Hockey Online (Start Time, Preview)

The Florida Panthers try to end the New York Rangers’ home undefeated streak as they meet at Madison Square Garden in the National Hockey League on Sunday. The game will start at 5 p.m. ET and can be watched online through live stream (details below).

Nash Kim Klement/USA TODAY Sports Images

Christian Post Report – Rick Nash of the New York Rangers

The Rangers have won four straight in the Garden, including a 4-1 win against the Nashville Predators.

In that contest between two of the top teams in the league, New York got off to an early lead after Marc Staal scored in the first seven minutes of the contest. Chris Kreider then doubled the lead in the second period before Matt Cullen cut the deficit in half with a wrister.

However, the Rangers proved to be too much as Dominic Moore ad Rick Nash netted in the last period to eventually win 4-1.

Kevin Klein will not be available for New York after suffering an arm injury early in the week. He has joined goalie Henrik Lundqvist in the list of injuries with the shot-stopper out indefinitely after a neck injury.

For the Panthers, they are still trying to climb the rankings as they find themselves in the lower half of the Eastern Conference.

Nick Bjugstad and Jonathan Huberdeau lead the team statistically but they will need to get help from veterans like Jussi Jokinen as they try to make a late push in the season.

Like the Rangers, Florida are missing top goalie Roberto Luongo who has been out since the first week of the month due to a shoulder injury. Unfortunately, Al Montoya also suffered a groin injury leaving the Panthers short-handed when it comes to the goalie position.

New York have won their first two meetings of the season, first a 5-2 victory in Florida, followed by another dazzling 6-3 win in New York.

In the home win, the score was tied 3-3 coming into the final period before three straight goals within a 10-minute span gave New York a much-deserved victory.

This will be their final meeting of the regular season.

Dallas Stars vs St Louis Blues Live Stream Free: Watch NHL Hockey Online (Start Time, Preview)

It’s a showdown in Texas as the Dallas Stars host the St. Louis Blues at American Airlines Arena in the NHL on Sunday. The game has a start time of 6 p.m. ET and can be watched online through live stream (details below).

Blues Jason Vinlove, USA TODAY Sports

Christian Post Report – The St. Louis Blues celebrate after scoring a goal.

The Central Division rivals have met three times so far, and are scheduled to meet a total of five times in the regular season.

St. Louis won the first match in Dallas, with Vladimir Tarasenko scoring the winning goal in the game that went to overtime.

It was an exciting back-and-forth battle, with Jamie Oleksiak opening the scoring in the 14th minute from a powerful slapshot.

The Blues recovered quickly after Tarasenko scored only after 35 seconds of conceding.

In the second period, Tyler Seguin restored the Stars’ lead – only to be levelled again by the Blues after Jori Lehtera scored a beautiful backhand after 37 seconds.

The final period brought the same intensity as Trevor Daley wristed a shot into the net after four minutes from the restart, but again Tarasenko needed less than 10 minutes to score his second – and send the game into overtime.

It was there where the Russian secured his hat-trick after a Power Play Goal, giving the Blues the extra point.

However, in the next two meetings, Dallas got their revenge as they won 3-4 and 1-4 in Missouri to set up an interesting clash back in Texas.

March has been a tough month for Dallas in terms of injuries as they lost Daley and John Klingberg to knocks, with the former expecting to return early April after a knee injury. Klingberg is listed as day-to-day after an upper body injury this week.

Since losing Kevin Shattenkirk and Zbynek Michalek in February, the Blues have been relatively injury-free in March. Hopefully they get back Shattenkirk early April.

The Boston Bruins travel to the Verizon Center to face the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League on Sunday. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. ET, and a live stream of the game is available (details below).

Ovechkin Charles LeClaire, USA TODAY Sports

Christian Post Report – Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals

Despite only one win in their last four games, the Capitals are still in the race for the Wild Card spot in the playoffs.

They’re currently fourth in the Metropolitan Division and hold a 12 point lead over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Unfortunately, they have also been riddled with injuries, with five players listed as either out indefinitely or day-to-day.

Three players have been sidelined in March alone, with Michael Latta and Brooks Orpik out with lower body injuries, while Jay Beagle is the latest casualty, and is listed as day to day due to a knock on his shoulder.

Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom need more help from other guys as they are the only two players who have exceeded 50 points so far this season. John Carlson is the next after the two stars with 46 points from 10 goals and 36 assists.

For the Bruins, they are fourth in the Atlantic Division but have improved their form as of late. They are also trying to chase a playoff spot whether it be a Wild Card or through automatic inclusion.

Brett Connolly is out until at least April after a finger injury during practice required surgery. He underwent a successful operation and is optimistic that he will be able to return just before the postseason begins.

Set to meet three times this season, the two teams have only squared-off once so far, with Washington winning big at Boston.

Ovechkin scored twice in the first period to set the tone of the game, while Mike Green and Joel Ward added to the lead in the second and third periods respectively to get two points in a 4-0 victory.

After this meeting, the two squads are set to clash for the last time in April.
