Biden Unveils Vast LGBT Plan Overturning Trump’s Religious Liberty Protections

Former Vice President Joe Biden unveiled a sweeping plan for the LGBT community last week, pledging to overturn Trump-era religious liberty policies if he becomes president and promoting passage of the Equality Act – a bill opposed by some gay and lesbian Americans because of its negative impact on women’s sports.

Biden’s 7,000-word plan would also ban conversion therapy, guarantee transgender students access to bathrooms and locker rooms of their choosing, and add a “third gender” option on government forms for non-binary individuals.

The plan lists the accomplishments of the Obama-Biden administration for the LGBT community, such as ending Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and promoting the legalization of same-sex marriage.

“But this fight’s not over,” the plan says.

The Biden plan pledges to overturn a 2019 Trump religious liberty proposal that would allow faith-based adoption and foster care agencies to receive federal grants if they don’t place children in same-sex homes. The Trump proposal would reverse an Obama-era rule that prevented federal grants from going to any entity that discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Alliance Defending Freedom senior counsel Zack Pruitt said last year the new Trump rule would end discrimination “against faith-based providers simply because of their beliefs about marriage.”

FDA, FTC Orders Jim Bakker to Stop Selling Fake Coronavirus Cure

FDA, FTC Orders Jim Bakker to Stop Selling Fake Coronavirus Cure

Two federal agencies have issued an official warning to televangelist Jim Bakker after he was caught selling products that claim to cure coronavirus. The Jim Bakker Show was among seven companies singled out by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission for selling a phony potion, “Silver Solution,” which they claim can “eliminate” the COVID-19 virus.

In an official statement, the FDA noted that it had reviewed the Jim Bakker Show website and found it was in breach of federal rules on the sale of unapproved products. “The FDA has determined that your website offers products labeled to contain silver, such as “Silver Sol Liquid,” for sale in the United States and that these products are intended to mitigate, prevent, treat, diagnose, or cure COVID-19 in people.”

“FDA has determined that these products are unapproved new drugs sold in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act), 21 U.S.C. § 355(a),” it wrote.

The advert on Bakker’s website claims that the “Silver Solution” product has been “tested on other strains of the coronavirus, and has been able to eliminate it within 12 hours.”

The FDA warned that if Bakker failed to…

Sony Pictures announces it will move “Peter Rabbit 2” to August

Hollywood continued to shuffle its upcoming releases due to the coronavirus, as Sony Pictures on Tuesday announced that it’s moving “Peter Rabbit 2” to August.

“Peter Rabbit 2” had been set to hit U.K. and European theaters on March 27, and open in the U.S. on April 3. Instead, Sony said the sequel to 2018′s “Peter Rabbit” will launch on Aug. 7.

Cinemas have been closed in China for several weeks. On Monday, Italy shuttered all of its theaters. In many countries, health experts are advocating social distancing to help prevent the spread of the virus.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.

The vast majority of people recover from the new virus. According to the World Health Organization, people with mild illness recover in about two weeks, while those with more severe illness may take three to six weeks to recover. In mainland China, where the virus first exploded, more than 80,000 people have been diagnosed and more than 58,000 have so far recovered.

Last week, April’s biggest movie release, the James Bond film “No Time to Die,” postponed from early April to November. Much of the film’s early promotion had already begun, with Daniel Craig hosting “Saturday Night Live” on Saturday and the release of Billie Eilish’s theme song.

The previous “Peter Rabbit” was one of 2018′s top animated releases, grossing $351 million worldwide, including a hefty $236 million internationally.

Putin and His Allies Endorse Scheme to Bypass Term Limits and Keep Him in Power

MOSCOW (AP) – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday backed a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow him to seek re-election after his current term ends in 2024, ending uncertainty about his future.

Putin gave his support to the amendment put forward by lawmaker Valentina Tereshkova, who as a Soviet cosmonaut in 1963 became the first woman to fly to space. She proposed either scrapping Russian’s two-term limit for presidents or resetting the clock so Putin’s four terms wouldn’t count.

Lawmakers in the Kremlin-controlled State Duma quickly endorsed Tereshkova’s proposal, along with a sweeping set of constitutional changes proposed by Putin.

In a speech to lawmakers Tuesday, Putin spoke against scrapping presidential term limits altogether but backed the idea that if the constitution is revised, the two-term limit only would apply from 2024 on. The president’s current six-year term expires in 2024.

Putin, 67, has been in power for more than 20 years, becoming Russia’s longest-serving leader since Soviet dictator Josef Stalin. After serving two presidential terms in 2000-2008, he shifted to the Russian prime minister’s office while protege Dmitry Medvedev served as a placeholder president.

Putin reclaimed the presidency in 2012 and won another term in 2018.

A series of constitutional amendments Putin proposed in January were widely seen by Kremlin foes as part of his efforts to stay in power. However, it wasn’t clear until Tuesday how Putin could achieve that goal.

Observers had speculated that Putin could use the changes to scrap term limits; move into the prime minister’s seat with strengthened powers; or continue calling the shots as the head of the State Council.

He rejected all those options and finally revealed his cards Tuesday after Tereshkova, a legendary figure widely revered for her pioneering space flight, offered her ideas.

“I propose to either lift the presidential term limit or add a clause that after the revised constitution enters force, the incumbent president, just like any other citizen, has the right to seek the presidency,” she said to a raucous applause.

After Tereshkova spoke, Putin quickly came to parliament to address lawmakers.

He said he was aware of public calls for him to stay on as president and emphasized that Russia needs stability above all.

“The president is a guarantor of security of our state, its internal stability and evolutionary development,” Putin said. “We have had enough revolutions.”

However, he said that since the constitution is a long-term document, scrapping the term limit wasn’t a good idea.

Then he dropped the bombshell, saying he positively viewed Tereshkova’s alternate proposal to restart the term count when the revamped constitution enters force.

“As for the proposal to lift restrictions for any person, including the incumbent, to allow running in elections, this option is possible,” Putin said.

He added that the Constitutional Court would need to judge if the move would be legal, although the court’s assent is all but guaranteed.

Putin’s statement came as lawmakers were considering the amendments in a crucial second reading when changes in the document are made.

The Kremlin-controlled lower house, the State Duma, quickly endorsed the proposed amendments by a 382-0 vote with 44 abstentions. A vote on a third reading will be a quick formality. A nationwide vote on the proposed amendments is set for April 22.

Southern Baptist Convention’s Vision 2025 Sets Massive Goal for Church Planting and Missionaries Across North America

If anyone had looked at a map of Southern Baptist church plants in Boston just 15 years ago, there would have been just two. And the city’s spiritual desert extends far beyond just Southern Baptists. According to a Barna Research study from 2017, of the least-churched cities in America, Boston is fourth (and Springfield, Mass., just an hour and a half away is third).

David Butler, the North American Mission Board’s Send City missionary in Boston, says Christians for decades have prayed for new, Bible-believing churches in the city that was once North America’s spiritual epicenter. For much of those decades, God seemed slow to respond to the prayers.

Although there is still a long way to go, in the last decade, a small miracle seems to be emerging among Southern Baptists in Boston. Today, Boston Southern Baptists have 74 active church plants — nearly 40 times the number just 15 years ago.

“Some of the things that are happening in Boston right now — and not just in our tribe — are unprecedented,” Butler said. “How can you explain that a son of a Russian-born dissident now leads a church of 500 to 600 and meets every Sunday in the largest Jewish synagogue in Boston? How do you explain how a pastor of a mega-church in Southern California, filled with the call of God, moves his family here with along with a couple of other families? And now, with a very entrepreneurial spirit, they’ve opened up four or five different coffee shops and each one of them is an outpost for the Gospel, as well as a place for a church plant.”

Today, the narrative is changing in Beantown — and throughout New England — for Southern Baptists. More than four out of 10 Southern Baptist congregations in New England have been started since 2010. More than a third of baptisms in the Baptist Convention of New England came from churches Southern Baptists have started in the last decade.

But Butler says there is still much work to do. He notes that, despite the gains of the last decade, Southern Baptists only have churches in 52 of the 297 communities, neighborhoods, and towns in the Greater Boston area. New England Southern Baptists are praying to start 300 new churches in the city by the time Boston turns 400 in 2030.

Southern Baptists aren’t setting significant church-planting goals only in Boston. Last month, when SBC Executive President Ronnie Floyd unveiled his Vision 2025 plan, it included a bold goal of adding 6,000 churches, or 1,200 per year, to the Southern Baptist Convention in the next five years.

In an article by Floyd last month, he noted that most years the 1,200 new churches would include 750 church plants, 50 new campuses added by multi-site churches and 400 new churches affiliating with the SBC.

The goal came from the North American Mission Board, which has the SBC assignment for assisting Southern Baptist churches in planting new churches. NAMB President Kevin Ezell says the goal is needed to keep up with population growth in North America and the attrition facing Southern Baptist churches.

“Achieving that goal will be a challenge,” Ezell said. “It will require the efforts of all Southern Baptists.”

In 2018, the last year of updated statistics, Southern Baptists planted 624 new churches. Sixty-two percent of those churches were either non-Anglo or multi-ethnic. Another 254 churches began cooperating with the SBC that year.

Since launching Send North America at the 2011 SBC Annual Meeting in Phoenix, NAMB has prioritized partnering with new church plants outside of the Southeast, where most Southern Baptist churches reside. NAMB has particularly focused on 32 strategic “Send Cities,” like Boston, and three strategic areas (collegiate communities, military communities and Puerto Rico).

Ezell says the biggest challenge Southern Baptists will face in trying to add 1,200 churches in five years is finding enough qualified church planting missionaries.

“We could plant a hundred more churches if we had the planters to do it,” Ezell said. “We have fine-tuned our assessment process so that we are sending out qualified missionaries who are ready for the field, but that has meant that the numbers have gone down.

“Quality means more to us than quantity. First, for the sake of spreading the Gospel, we want every church to succeed. But also, these missionaries are real people whose lives and families are deeply affected if they enter the field and discover that they were not prepared for the challenges. And if a church does happen to fail, it might present a bad testimony to the community where that church plant was attempted, often making it that much harder for the next missionary who seeks to reach that community. So there is a lot riding on it.”

To overcome the challenging need for new church planters, NAMB has been helping Southern Baptist churches develop a Multiplication Pipeline, which helps churches “call out the called” and discover new potential church planting team members and equip them to lead.

GenSend Program Raises Up the Next Generation of Missionaries

Southern California sounded like a vacation spot to Ebbie Davis at first, not a location for serious mission work. Besides, the seminary degree she was working on at the time focused on international church planting, not North America.

But as she looked at an opportunity to serve in San Diego through the North American Mission Board’s (NAMB) GenSend program, a friend asked some questions about what her time there would entail.

“I said I’d be working with a church plant there,” Davis recalled, “and learning how to live my life on mission and do ministry in the context of the city.”

Her friend pointed out that it sounded exactly like the aim of her degree program at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Davis realized it might be a perfect fit.

GenSend is NAMB’s missions development program that enables college-age students, age 18 to 25, to serve in a NAMB Send City for six to eight weeks and learn how to live their lives on mission. They come alongside missionaries in church planting and compassion ministry for an in-depth missions experience.

In North America, approximately 75 percent of residents are not born-again believers, which means more than 272 million people are without Christ. While NAMB helps churches plant churches everywhere for everyone, the urban centers of the continent not only have higher population density, but those in cities are also frequently more secular than other regions of the United States and Canada.

“Our Send Cities are 32 of the highest populated areas with the greatest need for the Gospel,” said Jeremy Aylett, NAMB’s Send City Missionary in San Diego. “Millions of people, for example, live here in San Diego, and the reach of this city extends around the world.”

At the moment, one of the biggest challenges for church planting in North America stems from not having enough qualified missionaries who can serve. GenSend affords many young people the opportunity to reshape their view of what it means to be a missionary.

Many leave the program with a plan to leverage their lives for the sake of the Gospel, even if that does not mean becoming a pastor or church planter.

The Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American missions provides funding that makes GenSend possible. Students spend their summers serving on the field and can focus on building relationships, sharing the gospel and connecting people they meet with a local church — all without the burden of how they are going to pay for their expenses.

“They don’t have to worry about the logistics of living in the city,” Davis explained. “They only have to worry about, ‘Who can I talk to next to tell them about Jesus?’”

Final Super Moon of Winter Leads Christians Into Season of Lent

As winter comes to a close, a magnificent scene in the sky has appeared, leaving spectators in awe.

The final full moon of the winter season is a “super moon” which occurs when it’s closest to Earth in its orbit.

Some Christians call this last full moon of winter the “Lenten Moon” for the season of Lent before Easter.

Lent is known as a time of prayer, repentance, and recommitment leading up to the celebration of Christ’s resurrection at Easter and a season of new beginnings and spiritual rebirth through Jesus Christ.

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the last full moon is also referred to as the “Worm Moon.” When the temperatures start rising and the ground begins to soften, earthworms reappear, inviting the return of robins.

That means the moon will appear much larger and brighter than normal and the best time to see it is right after sunset.

The super moon lit up the sky around the world on Monday at 1:48 pm Eastern Time, inspiring people to post their snapshots on social media.

Church Engagement Down about Half Since 2000, Barna Group Reports

Church Engagement Down about Half Since 2000, Barna Group Reports

The Barna Group, a research agency focusing on Christianity, has found that just one in four Americans can be considered “practicing Christians,” a significantly smaller percentage (25 percent) of the U.S. population than in 2000 when “45 percent of all those sampled qualified as practicing Christians.”

Barna shared the finding in the latest report on the yearlong State of the Church 2020 project, which the report says explores “the current challenges and opportunities facing the Church” with an “aim to shed more light on why Americans’ relationship to churches is changing and help Christians discern a faithful direction forward.”

According to Barna, the State of the Church 2020 report, a study of the long-term cultural changes in the U.S. over the last two decades, is comprised of 96,171 surveys collected during the period.

This body of data, Barna says, offers “powerful insight into the changes happening in terms of faith practice, such as church attendance, Bible-reading and prayer.”

From this body of research, Barna says, “emerges is a nuanced portrait of people trying to figure out what faith means in the 21st Century and the role of Christianity in their lives. And while key markers of religiosity have diminished overall, there are some signs of steadiness among committed Christians that stand in contrast.”

Overall, the report concludes that “Christianity in…

5 Ways To Embrace Church Diversity

April 17, 1960, on NBC’s “Meet the Press” the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama said one of the shameful tragedies of our society is that 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning is the most segregated hour in Christian America.

There are 2 billion Christians in the world. By definition, that means over 30% of the world have a desire to model their lives after Jesus Christ. Most Americans identify as Christians; however, much only worship with their own nationality. Segregation is not a characteristic of Christ.

I have always had the ability to fit in with people who are different. In my early twenties, I dated a Canadian who did not understand the racial issues of the south. She could not comprehend not liking someone because of their race. Some of you reading this are wondering if she was white or black. Why is that?

I have lived in several small communities with narrow racial vision due to limited experiences. I grew up in L.A., not Los Angeles like my former roommate Marvin Hawkins; but Lower Alabama. That’s what some people call Panama City, Florida. Panama City is more like Dothan, Alabama than Orlando, Florida. My ability to blend in is authentic and affords me the opportunity to influence more and be influenced by more.

I am considered a safe Negro. Several white pastors call me when they have a question about the black community. In college, the Daily Oklahoman asked my racial opinion about the Columbine shootings as they were happening. Ironically I identify with my faith more than my race. I consider myself a follower of Christ first and an African American or black man second. When people of another race ask what they should call me I say, Willie.

The church we are members of now is mostly white. The lead pastor is Greek, his wife is German and the pastor on our campus could be considered Cajun. When we lived in Pensacola our pastor was Italian and his wife was Cuban. My wife and I both grew up in traditional southern black churches and have never chosen a church based on race, music or preaching styles. I started following Christ as a teenager and was faithful to church attendance my entire life.

When I went to college in the panhandle of Oklahoma I searched for a church like the one I grew up in but found none. I tried to minor in theology, but my school didn’t offer theology as a minor so I took every religious course available. I unintentionally gave myself an additional religious education by attending different churches.

President Trump shook hands with man who had contact with infected person: Three ways Jesus responds to fear

President Trump shook hands on February 29 with a man who had direct contact with a person who later tested positive for COVID-19. The White House states that the president had no direct contact with the infected person and has no symptoms. However, Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Paul Gosar are under self-quarantine after interaction with the infected person.

In related news, Christ Church Georgetown suspended services last Sunday after its rector, Rev. Thomas Cole, was diagnosed with coronavirus at the hospital Saturday evening. This is the first time the church has closed since a fire in the 1800s. Health officials are asking hundreds of people who had potential contact with Rev. Cole to self-quarantine.

Closer to home for me, the county where I live now apparently has its first case of coronavirus. A man in his thirties traveled to California and is self-quarantined at home with his family while additional testing is done.

The president and the White House coronavirus task force held a press conference yesterday evening in which they announced economic steps intended to assist those who are at financial risk, especially those who cannot afford to miss work. They also announced practical ways Americans can protect themselves and others from the spread of the disease.

Three ways Jesus responds to fear

As the epidemic spreads across the US and the world, fear is spreading as well.

This is a new disease to humans (thus the “novel” coronavirus description). As a result, we have no acquired immunity such as we have developed to existing flu strains. There are also no approved vaccines or therapies for coronavirus as there are for flu. And its death rate at present stands at 3.4 percent, compared with far less than 1 percent for those infected by the flu.

Since anyone can get COVID-19, everyone can get COVID-19.

One way Christianity is different from other religions and worldviews centers in Jesus’ redemptive…
