Collegiate Day of Prayer Fueling Gospel Movement in the U.S.

Yesterday was the Collegiate Day of Prayer in the United States. It’s a massive annual event put on by a coalition of campus ministries to encourage prayer for college campuses across America.

EveryCampus with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship helped support Collegiate Day of Prayer. InterVarsity’s Jon Hietbrink says yesterday, they saw people doing prayer walks on campuses, praying in churches, and hosting prayer events to see God move. Collegiate Day of Prayer even did a live simulcast from a historic Yale chapel that broadcasted all over the country.

“Part of what I love about Collegiate Day of Prayer is there are lots of different avenues for people to get involved and to participate,” Hietbrink says. “The hope is that it’s, of course, not just one day of prayer, but actually a day to shine a spotlight on the strategic need that campuses [have] so that folks would continue to pray for campuses long after Collegiate Day of Prayer is done.”

Other ministries involved in Collegiate Day of Prayer included Chi Alpha, Luke 18, Campus Renewal Ministries, Cru, and Navigators.

Hietbrink says the unity demonstrated between Christian campus ministries for Collegiate Day of Prayer is really unprecedented. But to reach the over 4,000 college campuses in the US with the Gospel, one campus ministry can’t do it alone.

“God knows every single one of those campuses and every single student and faculty and staff that comes through the doors of those campuses…. When we pray through Collegiate Day of Prayer, we get the chance to join in something that Jesus is doing and we gain a greater measure of God’s heart for these campuses and these students. It’s a privilege to be in that space.”

It’s not just ministry leaders leading the charge. Students are also taking the initiative to prompt a movement of the Holy Spirit on their campuses.

For example, Hietbrink says he heard of one group of students from Tennessee who road tripped from Knoxville to New York City. Along the way, “I think they prayer walked something like 20 or 25 different schools as they road tripped up the eastern seaboard. They visited campuses, they made contacts on those campuses, sought to pray for the blessing of God to rest on those campuses.”

Jim Denison on What Is the Trinity?

Every parent dreads the question: “What is the Trinity?”

How do we explain the fact that our God is three and yet one?

The concept violates logic.

This issue is especially relevant when interacting with the Muslim world. Islamic faith is insistent on the unity and singularity of God. The central affirmation of Islam is this statement: there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet. To this way of thinking, Christians are tri-theists and thus idolaters.

How can we explain our trinitarian theology to Muslims, or even to ourselves?

And why does it all matter to our lives today?

What is the Trinity?

It has been said that if the mind were simple enough for us to understand it, we would be too simple to understand it. Likewise, if God were simple enough for my finite, fallen mind to understand him, he would not be God.

How does a mother explain marriage to her five-year-old daughter? How does a mathematician explain calculus to his third-grade son?

Yet we try. We sing as though we understood the words, “Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty . . . God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.” I speak the same words over new believers which were recited over me in the baptismal waters and over other Christians for twenty centuries: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Why? What is the Trinity?

And why is understanding it so essential?

A brief history of God

The first biblical reference to God starts the mystery: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). The Hebrew term here translated “God” is Elohim. The im is how the Hebrew language makes a word plural, like putting s on the end of a word in English. Thus one could translate the word as Gods (though some Hebrew scholars believe that the plurality points more to God’s majesty than his number).

However, the following Hebrew verb “created” requires a singular noun, indicating that its subject is one rather than many. So, in “God created” we have our start into the mystery that is the nature of God.

From the earliest of times, the Jewish tradition has affirmed that “the Lord our God, the Lord is one” (Deuteronomy 6:4, the Shema, which is recited in daily Jewish spirituality). Such monotheism was a radical departure from the polytheism of ancient cultures. But the experience of the first Christians made simple monotheism problematic, for they knew Jesus Christ to be Lord and God (cf. John 1:1; 20:28; Romans 9:5; Titus 2:13). They also experienced the Holy Spirit as divine (Genesis 1:2; cf. Acts 5:2, 4; 2 Corinthians 3:17-18). But these three were independent (at Jesus’ baptism the Father spoke and the Spirit descended; Matthew 3:16-17).

There is no indication that apostolic Christians struggled with the logic of their experience of God. Paul could pray for the Corinthians, “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all” (2 Corinthians 13:14). They knew God to be one, but they experienced him as three persons. This logical contradiction did not trouble them, for they were more pragmatic than speculative. They needed no words such as “Trinity” or theological formulations to explain their faith. But matters would quickly change.

The problem of God

As Christianity spread beyond its Jewish roots, it encountered a worldview steeped in logic and rationalism. Aristotle had taught the Western world that non-contradiction is the test for all truth. Something cannot be one and three at the same time.

So how can the Christian doctrine of God be reasonable?

The earliest answers to the question resolved the logical tension but created problems greater than the one they “solved.”

Some made the Son and the Spirit less divine than the Father, an approach known as subordinationism.” By this formulation, Jesus is not Lord and the Holy Spirit who makes us Christians (cf. Romans 8:9) is not fully God.

Others taught that God shifts from being Father (Old Testament) to Son (Gospels) to Spirit (Acts to Revelation), an approach known as “modalism.” This strategy cannot explain the baptism of Jesus, the work of the Son (John 1:3-4) and the Spirit (Genesis 1:2) in creation, or the presence of the Spirit throughout the Old Testament (cf. Psalm 51:11). “Dynamic monarchians” taught that divine power descended upon Jesus so that he was not himself divine.

At the Councils of Nicaea (AD 325) and Constantinople (AD 381), the orthodox Church declared all such formulations to be heretical and affirmed that the Son and Spirit are of the same “essence” as the Father. “God in three Persons” catches the sense of their approach.

From then to now, believers have sought to understand this paradox better.

Some suggest that God is like water, capable of being solid ice, liquid, or steam (but not at the same time). Perhaps he is like a three-sided pyramid seen from above (but the three sides do not work independently as did the Trinity at Jesus’ baptism). Maybe he is like an egg: yoke, sac, shell (but the three do not retain the same essence). Perhaps he is like a woman who is mother to her children, wife to her husband, and daughter to her parents (but she cannot act in three independent ways at the same time).

All analogies eventually break down, as they should. As we noted earlier, if we can understand fully the essence of God, he would not be God.

Commitment to a God whose essence transcends our logical comprehension is a problem for some in our rationalistic culture. We like our faith to make sense. We may not understand why a ship floats or an airplane stays in the air, but we know that someone does. We’d have a hard time taking medicine no one understands, expecting effects no one can explain.

But we’d best get used to it. The more we learn about the universe, the more incomprehensible it becomes. Physicians do not understand how the mind works, or even if there is such a thing as the “mind.” We assume the category of time, but none of us can define it without contradiction.

So it is with the major doctrines of Christian faith. Is God three or one? Is Jesus fully God or fully human? Does God know the future or do we have freedom? Is the Bible divinely inspired or humanly written?

The answer to each question is the same: yes.

The divinity of Jesus

Muslims, Jews, and Christians hold in common our belief that there is a God of the universe. When we speak of the “Father,” we are on a familiar footing with other monotheistic faiths. But when we elevate the Son and the Spirit to divine status, we create the kind of tension that leads to confusion and rejection. So let’s take a moment to examine the divinity of the Second and Third members of the Godhead.

“Jesus is Lord” is the central affirmation of the Christian faith. Its Greek original is found scrawled on walls in the Roman catacombs and at the heart of the most ancient formulations of faith. When the Empire forced Christians to say “Caesar is Lord” or die, believers by the multiplied thousands chose to die. If presented the same option, we should make the same choice. Why?

‘Bibles for China’ Helping Combat Coronavirus with Health Supplies

As China recovers from the coronavirus outbreak, Bibles for China looks to “Hit the ground running.”

The coronavirus COVID-19 is now spreading faster outside China than inside, with European and Middle Eastern countries being affected. COVID-19 has hit Italy particularly hard.

The greatest concern at the moment is Iran, whose deputy health minister has recently been infected. Many worry Iran is not accurately reporting the number of victims in their country.

In China itself, the COVID-19 outbreak peaked around the beginning of February, the World Health Organization found, and has been decreasing since.

That is exactly what Bibles for China wants to hear. The ministry has been hampered by the outbreak, unable to move Bibles around China as efficiently as they were hoping.

While still primarily focused on providing scripture to the Chinese people, Bibles for China is helping with the crisis as well. Kurt Rovenstine says, “We are responding in a practical way to the epidemic, [giving] our supporters an opportunity, if they so choose, to support in helping to combat the virus with supplies, etc.”

Ark Encounter and Creation Museum Named USA Today’s Top Religious Museums

The $100 million Ark Encounter biblical theme park with a life-sized Noah’s Ark replica, and its sister institution, the Creation Museum, have finished No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards for 2020.

The Ark Encounter and the Creation Museum received the most readers’ votes from a list of the top religious museums in the nation as selected by a panel of top travel experts.

“Both attractions have made Northern Kentucky the leading faith-based destination in America,” the two winners said in a statement Friday.

“We are so grateful to USA Today for considering our internationally recognized attractions in its contest,” said Answers in Genesis’ Ken Ham, who is also the CEO and founder of the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum.

USA Today readers were asked to make their choice based on the stories, collections, and message at 20 U.S. museums, each dedicated to sharing the history, culture, art, and traditions of the world’s diverse religious groups and faith communities. The religious museum category included the country’s best Jewish museums, religious art collections, heritage centers, and other sites, from 14 states and the District of Columbia.

“Indeed, people from around the world rave about the exhibits and features at the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum, and now these people have validated our exciting attractions from among an impressive list of museums,” Ham said.

A Former Gangster Finds God through Crossroads Prison Ministries

Richard Sifuentes was on the run. Determined to avoid a third trip to prison, he was dodging police who were tracking him on an attempted murder charge. Scared and not sure what to do, Richard called his mother.

“The only one who can help you is God,” she told him.

Richard didn’t think his mom’s God could help him, but he was at the end of his rope. He hadn’t prayed a day in his life. But that day, Richard got down on his knees and said: “God, if you are real, help me change. Help me get out of this.”

Thirty minutes later, the cops kicked down his door, put him in handcuffs and carted him off to jail. Calling his mom from jail, Richard asked her, “What kind of God do you serve? I am in jail. He didn’t save me.”

His mother replied that God was saving him – saving him from his own destructive behavior. It was a difficult message for Richard to hear, but he took it to heart.

Richard was sentenced to 11 years in prison and soon discovered that God could redeem his situation. He began studying the Bible and encountered the love of God through reading His Word.

Richard’s hunger for Scripture only grew after he signed up for Crossroads Prison Ministries’s mentorship program.

He began the program as a way of keeping his mind off his surroundings but as he began completing the studies and reading letters from his mentors, he noticed his mind and heart beginning to change.

Slavic Gospel Association and Local Churches Continue to Minister as Fresh Violence Breaks Out Between Russia and Ukraine

The war between Russia and Ukraine drags on, and civilians are caught in the cross-fire.

If you haven’t heard anything about the war in Ukraine recently, it’s not because it’s over. A week ago, Russian-backed fighters attacked Ukrainian forces near the town of Zolote. Under artillery fire, the Ukrainians retreated. Read more here.

The attack came 5 years after the Minsk II agreement was supposed to have ended the conflict, and the artillery weapons used in the skirmish were specifically outlawed by that agreement.

Since Minsk II, nearly 14,000 people have died in combat, 30,000 have been injured, and well over a million have been displaced.

Eric Mock from Slavic Gospel Association (SGA) says, “I was just in the war zone, near the Minsk accord line in eastern Ukraine. And the need was profound. We went inside buildings that are in shambles after being shelled by artillery fire, only to find that people actually were still living there.”

SGA’s Operation Winter Warmth was able to provide small heaters, food, and blankets to some of these people. And Mock says he also saw the local church at work in the region.

Frontiers Mission Team Sowing Gospel Seeds Among Muslim Hazani People in North Africa

The Hazani people in North Africa are devoutly Muslim. They are also an unreached people group, meaning they don’t have any local Christians. Jared and a team with Frontiers USA minister full-time among the Hazani and have a good relationship, but it took a while to get there.

Decades earlier, Jared’s American Midwest church began praying for the Hazani people to know Jesus. Frontiers helped the church connect with the Hazani in North Africa and they learned the tribe was trying to find ways to broaden their children’s understanding of the world.

This prompted an idea. Jared’s church invited the Hazani to send their kids to visit America and stay with Christian host families.

Perry LaHaie with Frontiers says, “They reached out to the Hazani tribal leaders and they said, ‘Well, other Muslims really aren’t helping us. So let’s give these American Christians a chance.’

“That first summer, nine families from Jared’s church hosted the kids and then after a couple of years, Hazani leaders invited Jared’s church to send short-term teams to come and just love on the kids more. The tribal leaders just said, ‘You love our kids. We can see that you genuinely care.’”

Once Jared finished college in the early 2000s, he started going on short-term trips to visit the Hazani. Eventually, his church partnered with Frontiers to send a full-time team to work among the Hazani in North Africa. Jared quit his job, joined the full-time team, and even became the team leader.

“They’ve been working among the Hazani for several years now sowing seeds of the Gospel, sharing and showing the love of Jesus,” LaHaie says. “There are still no churches and no believers. After decades, Jared started to wonder and his teammates started to wonder if they had been just laboring in vain, working in vain, just throwing seed into the dry ground.”

“But God brought this promise to them from Isaiah 43. God says, ‘I’m doing a new thing. I’m making a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.’ They have held on to that promise.”

It leaves our home so lonely and drear
Then do we wonder why others prosper
Living so wicked year after year

When He comes from His home in the sky

God gave me these prayers and words to share in situations like this:

THE LIFE PRAYER
God, prepare us
for good days and bad days,
prepare us for celebrations and tragedies,
prepare us for weddings and funerals,
prepare us for life and death.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Praying without ceasing is the best way to successfully and cheerfully get through the vicissitudes of life.

THE THANK YOU LIFE PRAYER
God, thank You
for good days and bad days,
thank You for celebrations and tragedies,
thank You for weddings and funerals,
thank You for life and death.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

For believers who earnestly seek to commit themselves to God’s will for their lives, it indeed becomes increasingly evident that “without faith it is impossible to please God”. Christians and non-Christians alike have heard “faith” discussed in so many ways—in such diverse forums—that the biblical meaning has been diluted by mixing with it secular definitions that describe lesser convictions. The text of Hebrews 11:6 sheds some light on the type of faith required of the committed believer.

For he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.

Sounds simple enough,doesn’t it? Basically, all you need to know is that God is a good God, right? But what about when circumstance and misfortune begin to press our souls? What about when that long-time dream is denied or deferred? It is at these times that life asks us who we really are and who do we know our Lord to be. Believing that God is, is to know in one’s heart that our heavenly Father is all that Scripture says He is.

For example: it’s being totally convinced that God is good;

Psalm 100:5 says, “For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”

Nahum 1:7 says, “The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.”

God is caring;

I Peter 5:7 says, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

God is righteous;

Psalm 7:9 says, “Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.”

Psalm 119:137 says, “Righteous art thou, O Lord, and upright are thy judgments.”

God is all-powerful;

Genesis 17:1 says, “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.”

God is all-knowing;

Isaiah 40:14 says, “With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?”

God is always with us;

Jeremiah 23:23-24 says, “Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord.”

Psalm 37:25 says, “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.”

God knows each of us personally;

Matthew 10:30 says, “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.”

God is merciful;

Psalm 136:1 says, “O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.”

God is gracious;

Psalm 116:5 says, “Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.”

God loves us:

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

——-

My Brother Mark Anthony White and My Father Bishop Daniel White Jr. Are Now in Heaven and Would Like for Me to Tell You How to Get There.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 18:8: “Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

If you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior today, please email me at [email protected] and let us know. There is some free material that we want to send you. If you have a prayer request, please e-mail that to us as well, and we will pray for you until you tell us to stop.

God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.

PODCAST: The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #428: Amos 3:3 (with Daniel Whyte III)

This is Daniel Whyte III president of Gospel Light Society International with The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #428, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary or Matthew Henry Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Amos 3:3.

3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

________

That was Amos 3:3. Now here is the sense of it.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:

These verses show that Israel’s punishment was inevitable. Much as there is often an inseparable link between two events in ordinary life, so there was an inseparable link between God’s revelation to Amos and the inevitable appearance of judgment. Through a series of seven rhetorical questions (in verses 3–6) Amos reminded his listeners that certain events are inseparably connected. A second event does not happen unless it has been preceded by a necessary first event; once the first event has taken place the second is sure to follow. First, two do not walk together along a road unless they have first met, chatted, and agreed to continue on together.

____________

Thank you for listening to the Scripture & The Sense Podcast. Remember to read the Word of God each and every day and pray without ceasing to God for wisdom to understand it and apply it to your life. Most importantly, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Please stay tuned for a complete presentation of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ so that you can get your soul saved from Hell to that wonderful place called Heaven when you die. May God bless you and keep you is my prayer.

thank You for weddings and funerals,
thank You for life and death.

For example: it’s being totally convinced that God is good;

Psalm 100:5 says, “For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”

Nahum 1:7 says, “The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.”

God is caring;

I Peter 5:7 says, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

God is righteous;

Psalm 7:9 says, “Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.”

Psalm 119:137 says, “Righteous art thou, O Lord, and upright are thy judgments.”

God is all-powerful;

Genesis 17:1 says, “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.”

God is all-knowing;

Isaiah 40:14 says, “With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?”

God is always with us;

God knows each of us personally;

Matthew 10:30 says, “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.”

God is merciful;

Psalm 136:1 says, “O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.”

God is gracious;

Psalm 116:5 says, “Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.”

God loves us:

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
