Barna Poll Discovers Five Trends Relating to Churches Affecting Pastors and Christian Leaders

New research by the evangelical Christian polling firm Barna Group, which looked at how Americans relate with the churches they attend, reveals five notable trends affecting pastors and Christian leaders.

The findings are part of the State of the Church 2020 study, a year-long examination of the spiritual and religious trends that define American life these days. The researchers primarily explored two different categories of adults who have relatively recent experience in a Christian church: practicing Christians and churched adults.

“In the first case, we’re talking about those who are the most church savvy adults. In the second, we’re looking at all of those adults who are reasonably familiar with the experience of churchgoing,” Barna President David Kinnaman explained in an article based on the research.

Here are the five trends that Barna discovered:

1. Declining church loyalty, ‘church hopping’

Barna found that nearly two in five churchgoers report regularly attending multiple churches, suggesting that just because somebody might attend church doesn’t mean they attend the same church every time.

However, 63 percent of churched adults and 72 percent of practicing Christians tend to stick with a single congregation. And nearly two in five churched adults and one-quarter of practicing Christians at least occasionally attend other churches.

“Interestingly, church hoppers are just as likely as more loyal attenders to report weekly attendance. In other words, just because they select from a handful of different churches to attend doesn’t make them any less likely to actually attend church on any given weekend,” the study says. “Also, those who ‘hop around’ don’t do so as a routine part of their churchgoing in a given month, but typically attend another church occasionally.”

2. Churchgoers on the value of church

The study shows that two-thirds of churched adults say they attend church because they “enjoy doing it,” and the same is true for four in five practicing Christians. One in six churchgoers says they attend because they “have to” and one in seven says they do so “out of habit.”

“While most churchgoers attribute positive feelings to their participation in church, half of Christians agree that ‘church as usual’ is declining in popularity. Or, at least, churchgoers perceive that other people feel this way,” it says.

About half of Christians and more than half of churched adults overall admit that people they know are tired of the usual type of church experience, it adds. “While you might think that some groups of Christians are more likely than others to feel this way, data show no significant difference across denomination, generation or faith segment.”

In ‘post-truth’ politics, how can we distinguish truth from falsehood?

Politicians lie; that is nothing new. But politicians seem to lie today more than ever before.

With the country divided along party lines, we can’t even agree on the facts, leaving no room for consensus. To cite just one example, CNN aired a special report Nov. 24 hosted by Jake Tapper called “All the President’s Lies.” Laura Ingraham followed Dec. 5 on her Fox show, The Ingraham Angle, with a commentary about the impeachment inquiry called “All the Democrats’ Lies.”

If, to quote John 8:32, “the truth will set you free,” Americans seem stuck in a maze of falsehoods. If Christians don’t know which way to turn in search of truth, there are a few basic principles we can use as a guide.

But before considering them, we need to understand the cultural forces at work in this election year.

An era of factual relativism

Facts, even when not in dispute, and numbers have lost much of their power to persuade.

The trend has become so pronounced that the Oxford Dictionaries named “post-truth the 2016 word of the year. It’s an adjective meaning “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.” The word is often used in the phrase “post-truth politics.”

Our public square has entered an era of factual relativism, where traditionally impartial sources of information have become suspect, at least in some quarters.

“Journalists, judges, experts, and various other ‘elites’ are under fire today,” Dr. William Davies wrote in Nervous States: Democracy and the Decline of Reason. “Fewer and fewer people believe they are independent. Their capacity to reflect the truth in a neutral fashion, whether as scientists, professionals, journalists or policy advisers, is now attacked on the grounds that it is more self-interested and emotional than the protagonists are willing to let on.”

A study last…

Supreme Court Takes Major Adoption Case Pitting Religious Liberty, LGBT Rights

Supreme Court Takes Major Adoption Case Pitting Religious Liberty, LGBT Rights

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Monday to take up a major religious liberty case that could resolve the conflict between governments and faith-based adoption agencies that won’t place children in same-sex homes due to religious beliefs.

The case involves the city of Philadelphia, which severed its foster care contract with Catholic Social Services because the charity declined to place children in homes with same-sex couples – an action the city said violated its nondiscrimination policy.

The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty sued the city, claiming the policy violates the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious freedom. Becket is representing Catholic Social Services (CSS) and two foster moms who fostered children through CSS.

The case, Fulton v. Philadelphia, could have a major impact on similar conflicts nationwide. Becket lost at the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals before asking the Supreme Court to intervene.

The high court has not set a date for oral arguments.

“Over the last few years, agencies have been closing their doors across the country, and all the while children are pouring into the system,” said Lori Windham, senior counsel at Becket. “We are confident that the court will realize that the best solution is the one that has worked in Philadelphia for a century – all hands on deck for foster kids.”

U.S. Court of Appeals Rules Trump Administration Can Enforce Rule Denying Title X Funds to Clinics Promoting Abortion

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled that the Trump administration can enforce a rule denying Title X funds to family planning clinics that promote abortion.

In an opinion released Monday and authored by Circuit Judge Sandra Ikuta, the Ninth Circuit vacated multiple injunctions from lower courts against the Protect Life Rule and sent it back to the lower courts for further proceedings “consistent with this opinion.”

“Regulations issued in 1988, and upheld by the Supreme Court in 1991, completely prohibited the use of Title X funds in projects where clients received counseling or referrals for abortion as a method of family planning,” wrote Ikuta.

“In light of Supreme Court approval of the 1988 regulations and our broad deference to agencies’ interpretations of the statutes they are charged with implementing, plaintiffs’ legal challenges to the 2019 rule fail.”

Ikuta took issue with the term “Gag Rule” that critics use, as Ikuta wrote that the Trump administration regulation, created in March of last year, is less restrictive than the 1988 regulations.

“But the 2019 rule is less restrictive in at least one important respect: a counselor providing nondirective pregnancy counseling ‘may discuss abortion’ so long as ‘the counselor neither refers for, nor encourages, abortion’ … There is no ‘gag’ on abortion counseling,” noted Ikuta.

Circuit Judge Richard A. Paez authored a dissent, being joined by Chief Judge Sidney R. Thomas and Circuit Judges Kim McLane Wardlaw and William Fletcher.

“Three separate district courts in well-reasoned opinions recognized that the Rule breaches Congress’s limitations on the scope of HHS’s authority and enjoined enforcement of the Rule,” dissented Paez.

“In vacating the district courts’ preliminary injunctions, the majority sanctions the agency’s gross overreach and puts its own policy preferences before the law.”

Over 100,000 People Greet President Trump in India

Over 100,000 People Greet President Trump in India

Kicking off his 48-hour tour of India, President Donald Trump was greeted by over 100,000 people at the world’s largest cricket stadium in India, according to ABC News.

The crowd hailed the American president with cheers of “Namaste Trump” or “Welcome Trump.” Several people held cutouts of Trump’s face in the crowd, as well.

“The first lady and I have just traveled 8,000 miles around the globe to deliver a message to every citizen across this stadium: America loves India; America respects India; and, America will always be a faithful and loyal friend to the Indian people,” he said.

Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have several items on their agenda during Trump’s visit. One of the biggest is a potential trade deal.

“We are in the early stages of discussion for an incredible trade agreement to reduce barriers of investment between the United States and India,” said Trump from the stage. “And I am optimistic that working together with the Prime Minister and I can reach a fantastic deal that’s good, and even great for both of our countries. Except he’s a very tough negotiator.”

With India’s economy on the rise and previous trade halts, Trump is now eager to partner with the growing country.

“India will soon be the home of the biggest middle class anywhere in the world,” Trump said. “And within less than 10 years, extreme poverty in your country is projected to…

Truett Cathy’s Daughter: Chick-fil-A Made ‘Mistakes’ in Donation Controversy

Truett Cathy’s Daughter: Chick-fil-A Made ‘Mistakes’ in Donation Controversy

The daughter of Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy and the author of a new book about her mother says the company “made some mistakes” during its unveiling of a new giving strategy and is “trying to make some corrections.”

Trudy Cathy White, the only daughter of Truett and Jeannette Cathy, spoke to Christian Headlines Monday about her new book, A Quiet Strength, which recounts the life and legacy of Jeannette Cathy, who passed away in 2015 at the age of 92. Truett Cathy preceded her in death in 2014.

White, an ambassador for Chick-fil-A, said her mother, if alive, would have told her children to pray about the controversy over the change in giving strategy by the Chick-fil-A Foundation. Many customers were upset in 2019 when it was learned the Foundation was withdrawing its financial support of the Salvation Army and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and instead would fund Covenant House International, Junior Achievement, and local food banks

“My mom was really good about telling us to always learn from our mistakes,” White told Christian Headlines. “And I think in these last few months with some of things we’ve walked through, we’ve realized that we’ve made some mistakes. We’re trying to make some corrections in those. We discredited maybe some really outstanding organizations that needed recognition. And so we’re learning from those things.

“What my mom…

PODCAST: Whyte House Family Devotional Reading of Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening #39 (with Daniel Whyte III)

This is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International with the Whyte House Family Devotional Reading of Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening podcast. This is Episode #39.

Charles Spurgeon was a prominent English Particular Baptist preacher. He was very influential among the Christians of various denominations during his age and even today, and is commonly called the “Prince of Preachers”. After some time of alternately searching for God and running from God, he had a powerful encounter which led him to give his life to Christ. Spurgeon was only 16 when he preached his first sermon and he began publishing books shortly afterward. At the time of his death, he had preached nearly 3,600 sermons and published 49 volumes of commentaries, sayings, anecdotes, illustrations and devotions. Spurgeon said, “encouraging thoughts are like honey to the heart”, and wrote this devotional in hopes that its uplifting messages for each day of the year would bring comfort and refreshment to our walk with God. He was inspired by Isaiah 50:4 which reads, “He wakeneth morning by morning. He wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned” and Psalm 63:5-6 which says, “My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips; when I remember Thee upon my bed, and meditate on Thee in the night watches.”

Genesis 4:2 reads: “And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.”

As a shepherd Abel sanctified his work to the glory of God, and offered a sacrifice of blood upon his altar, and the Lord had respect unto Abel and his offering. This early type of our Lord is exceedingly clear and distinct. Like the first streak of light which tinges the east at sunrise, it does not reveal everything, but it clearly manifests the great fact that the sun is coming. As we see Abel, a shepherd and yet a priest, offering a sacrifice of sweet smell unto God, we discern our Lord, who brings before his Father a sacrifice to which Jehovah ever hath respect. Abel was hated by his brother—hated without a cause; and even so was the Saviour: the natural and carnal man hated the accepted man in whom the Spirit of grace was found, and rested not until his blood had been shed. Abel fell, and sprinkled his altar and sacrifice with his own blood, and therein sets forth the Lord Jesus slain by the enmity of man while serving as a priest before the Lord. “The good Shepherd layeth down his life for the sheep.” Let us weep over him as we view him slain by the hatred of mankind, staining the horns of his altar with his own blood. Abel’s blood speaketh. “The Lord said unto Cain, ‘The voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.’” The blood of Jesus hath a mighty tongue, and the import of its prevailing cry is not vengeance but mercy. It is precious beyond all preciousness to stand at the altar of our good Shepherd! to see him bleeding there as the slaughtered priest, and then to hear his blood speaking peace to all his flock, peace in our conscience, peace between Jew and Gentile, peace between man and his offended Maker, peace all down the ages of eternity for blood-washed men. Abel is the first shepherd in order of time, but our hearts shall ever place Jesus first in order of excellence. Thou great Keeper of the sheep, we the people of thy pasture bless thee with our whole hearts when we see thee slain for us.

PRAY.

Thank you for listening to the Morning and Evening podcast. If you do not know the Lord as your Savior, here is how you can be saved from Hell and walk with the Lord morning and evening until you go to that wonderful place called Heaven when you die:

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 18:8: “Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

If you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior today, please email me at [email protected] and let us know. There is some free material that we want to send you. If you have a prayer request, please e-mail that to us as well, and we will pray for you until you tell us to stop.

God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.

Sanders Stands by Defense of Castro, Cuba: ‘It’s Unfair to … Say Everything Is Bad’

Sanders Stands by Defense of Castro, Cuba: ‘It’s Unfair to … Say Everything Is Bad’

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is standing by controversial comments he made in 1985 praising communist Cuba and its then-leader, Fidel Castro.

The comments received media coverage during the 2016 Democratic campaign but are in the spotlight again with Sanders’ recent success in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. A self-described Democratic Socialist, he is considered the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination.

CBS’ 60 Minutes on Sunday played a clip of the ‘85 comments showing Sanders saying Castro “educated the kids, gave them health care, totally transformed the society.” At the time, Sanders was mayor of Burlington, Vt.

Anderson Cooper of 60 Minutes noted that Sanders, in the 1980s, also “had some positive things to say about the former Soviet Union and the Sandinistas in Nicaragua.” The Sandinistas were a socialist party backed by communist countries.

“We’re very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba, but you know … it’s unfair to simply say everything is bad,” Sanders told Cooper. “When Fidel Castro came into office you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing – even though Fidel Castro did it?”

Cooper…
