It has been returned nearly 1,400 years after it was sent to Rome as a gift to the pope.

The thumb-sized relic was unveiled to worshippers at the Notre Dame church in Jerusalem for a day of celebration and prayer.

On Saturday, it will be sent to its permanent home at the Franciscan Church of St Catherine, next to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the West Bank holy site where tradition says Jesus was born.

Its arrival will coincide with Advent, a four-week period leading up to Christmas.

Christian tradition holds that Joseph and Mary travelled to Bethlehem to register for the Roman census and found no room at the inn, forcing her to give birth to Jesus in a manger where animals were held.

A wooden structure that Christians believe was part of the manger was sent by St Sophronius, the patriarch of Jerusalem, to Pope Theodore I in the 640s, around the time of the Muslim conquest of the Holy Land.

Yisca Harani, an Israeli expert on Christianity, said many relics were relocated from the Holy Land in the Middle Ages as Rome and other cities were establishing themselves as centres of Christian life and pilgrimage.

A relic from the manger would have been particularly useful for dispelling heresies holding that Jesus was more of a spiritual than a physical being.

Various social media users have reported hearing gunshots from London Bridge.

A police statement said: “Police were called at 1:58pm to a stabbing at premises near to London Bridge.

“Emergency services attended, including officers from the Met and the City of London Police.

“A man has been detained by police. We believe a number of people have been injured. Further info to follow.”

Venerable Luke Miller told Premier his “heart goes out to all those involved”.

“We hold up all those who have been affected, for the people that were part of the incident whatever form it took,” he said.

“Also the members of the emergency services. We hold up all those people before God, He knows their needs better than we do.”

The Archdeacon is encouraging local churches to open their doors if it’s safe to do so to provide a place of sanctuary for people.

“To have a cup of tea and charge their mobile phone but also where they might say a prayer and be undercover, especially if their transport is disrupted in any way.”

He went on to say that churches should be safe places to reflect and talk and help promote peace to “prevent these things happening again in the future”.

Churches Together in England (CTE) is a membership of 49 churches, created to promote unity across the Catholic, Orthodox, Pentecostal, Anglican and Reformed churches.

Hannah Brock Womack, who is in a same sex marriage was nominated for the fourth presidency position by a group of Reformed churches and the Quakers.

Upon her appointment, the CTE requested Womack “not exercise” her role “for the sake of our ecumenical unity”.

The URC’s secretary for ecumenical and interfaith relations, Rev Philip Brooks told Premier the action taken was unjust.

“We would never turn anybody away in an office who was in a same sex marriage. We think it’s unfair that Hannah hasn’t been able to take up her position.

“We pray for the Church to genuinely come together, to find the grace and understanding to find a more just solution to what has been a very difficult situation.”

URC acknowledges that its own denomination does not have a “single view” on same sex marriage and the Church as a whole is divided on the issue but said CTE has a responsibility to model unity and inclusivity.

Brooks said: “Even in the time where we were deliberating as to whether to allow our local churches to register for same sex marriage, we have always made sure that those people who are in same sex marriages are able to serve in offices in the church.

Its pledged to “vigorously challenge any attempt to extend abortion provision beyond the current 24 week limit” comes after the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats recently proposed decriminalisation of abortion in their manifestos.

The parties’ plans would remove all sanctions in criminal law for those who perform abortions outside the limits set by the Abortion Act 1967.

The Church’s announcement to fight the increasing of the abortion week limit came after hundreds of Anglicans wrote an open letter in The Times published on 28th November also stating their opposition to the idea.
 
A response to the open letter signed by Rt Rev Christine Hardman, Lord Bishop of Newcastle and Rt Rev James Newcome, Lord Bishop of Carlisle & House of Bishops’ lead on Health and Social Care expressed the Church’s total commitment to the issue.

The Charity Commission disqualified the individuals after they resigned as trustees of Kingdom life Ministries, holding them to account for financial mismanagement, governance failings, and non-compliance with the Commission.

In the regulator’s investigation into Kingdom Life Ministries, which was opened after repeated failures to file accounts, the Commission found that all trustees received unauthorised payments from the church between June 2013 and November 2018, totalling £456,853.

During an inspection of the charity’s records, investigators found that the three former trustees had decided their own weekly salary payments of £200, £200 and £90 respectively. These payments were made in breach of the church’s governing document, and continued even after formal regulatory advice instructing an end to these arrangements. A total of £28,971 was paid in the months following the inspection.

The former trustees claimed that other payments related to reimbursement of costs, but did not provide enough information to prove it. The Charity Commission said after being informed that the inquiry was closing, the trustees did submit invoices relating to construction work, international flights and video production, however analysis of the charity’s bank statements showed that the majority of payments made to the former trustees were round sums.

Fr Nguyen Dinh Thuc, believes he was prevented from travelling as a punishment for his activism on behalf of fishermen who lost their livelihood after the Formosa Company steel plant disaster in 2016. 

A notice signed by the immigration authorities states that Fr Thuc was prevented from travelling for reasons of “national security and social order”.

Christian Solidarity Worlwide’s (CSW) chief executive Mervyn Thomas has condemned Vietnamese authorities for their actions.

“The suggestion that this has been done for reasons of national security is completely unfounded and is a clear reprisal for peaceful advocacy,” he said.

“We call on Vietnam to allow the priest to travel freely, and to cease all harassment.”

CSW said it continues to receive reports of severe violations of freedom of religion or belief against every major religious community in Vietnam, including Catholics. The charity said individuals in remote areas who are both ethnic and religious minorities, such as the Montagnard ethnic minority Catholics and Protestants in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, suffer the most severe abuses, including disruption of religious services, beatings, threats and intimidation and damage to properties used for religious services.

CSW added Catholics who defend the rights of others are subject to arbitrary detention, sometimes leading to lengthy sentences.

Pastor Samuel, whose name has been changed to protect his identity, lives in north-eastern Syria and said he believes that Mr Erdogan’s words do not match Turkey’s treatment of Christians.

He told Christian charity Open Doors: “In reality, you can see the massacres that the Turks have committed against Christians at different times until today, so why would he build a church while killing Christians? Why did he enter the area and destroy the churches in the first place? Even if these promises were true, why would that benefit me when he has caused everyone to leave the area?”
