Lauren Daigle Takes Home American Music Award for Favorite Artist—Contemporary/Inspirational


Lauren Daigle, who last month broke a Billboard record for her song “You Say,” has scored another musical milestone by garnering her fourth straight American Music Award in the “Favorite Artist—Contemporary Inspirational” category.


Daigle was not at the Sunday award show but reached out to fans via Twitter.


“Thanks to everyone who voted for the @amas! This year continues to be incredibly special and it is all because of YOU!!” she tweeted.


Fans vote for best artist in each category for the AMA’s. To qualify for nominations, the association considers interactions on Billboard.com, streaming, album and digital song sales, radio airplay, social activity and touring, according to CHVN Radio.


So far this year, Daigle has earned two Grammy’s, three Billboard awards and six GMA Dove awards.


In late October, the cross-over artist eclipsed another best-selling project, topping Hillsong United’s “Oceans,” which held the No. 1 of all-time spot atop Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs list for 61 weeks until Daigle unseated it with “You Say.” It stayed there for 66 weeks until Kayne West’s recent release of…

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live’s Emma Barnett on Wednesday, Most Rev Justin Welby was first asked about his response to the Chief Rabbi’s comments, where Ephraim Mirvis said many Jews are scared of a Labour Government.

The Archbishop repeated the support he gave the Chief Rabbi online, saying: “Obviously I know him quite well and when you look at his article, he talks about it being one of the most painful decisions he’s ever had to take and I know that’s true. His instincts, like mine and others, are that during an election you keep schtum, you say nothing. And a lot of people in the Jewish community were saying ‘you’ve got to speak’ and he felt that there was no choice.”

 

 

When asked if Jeremy Corbyn should say sorry over anti-Semitism, the Archbishop replied: “I can’t comment on him and we’re in an election period, I’m not going to comment on individuals. I think one of the things we’ve learned in the Church of England is that repentance, which is a sort of technical churchy kind of word, means both acknowledging where things have gone wrong but also changing course and action. All parties and all parts of our society have this profound history of anti-Semitism going back hundreds and hundreds of years, in which the church has also been caught up scandalously, appallingly.

Newlywed Pastor, Church Elder Shot to Death in Their Home


Earlier this week, a newlywed and assistant pastor at a Connecticut church and her husband, a church elder, were found shot dead next to each other in bed.


According to the Christian Post, LaRhonda Jones, an assistant pastor at RIM City Church, and her husband Eric were married a year ago.


Eric was a retired New Haven police officer who served on the force for 20 years, WTNH reports.


“The church is devastated, devastated,” Denarian Gordon, Sr., the senior pastor at RIM City Church in New Haven, told WTNH. “We’re all in a state of shock, disbelief.”


The Waterbury Police Department found the bodies of the couple after LaRhonda did not go to work. LaRhonda’s sister also called police. 


Police are investigating and have not released any other details.


A friend of LaRhonda’s, Jennifer Whiten, told reporters that she was a domestic violence survivor who was dedicated to serving God.


“She had a huge presence. Her spirit was just a welcoming spirit, everybody gravitated towards her. Everybody just loved her. It’s just a shock,” Whiten said.


LaRhonda had previously posted on social media about her marriage to Eric, saying Eric was “one of God’s sons.”

Renowned evangelical Wayne Grudem changes stance on divorce in abuse cases

The co-founder of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood has previously only supported divorce on the grounds of either infidelity or abandonment by an unbeliever.

Speaking to Christianity Today, Grudem said he was prompted to re-examine scripture after learning of real-life experiences of abuse within marriage.

“My wife Margaret and I became aware of some heartbreaking examples of such things as severe sexual humiliation and degradation that had continued for decades, and another case of physical battering that had gone on for decades”.

 

He added: “In all these situations the abused spouse had kept silent, believing that a Christian’s duty was to preserve the marriage unless there was adultery or desertion, which had not happened.”

These revelations lead Grudem to research whether the bible warranted those trapped in abusive marriages to separate from their partner.

In a talk entitled: “Grounds for Divorce: Why I Now Believe There Are More than Two”, Grudem shared his new perspective to a gathering of scholars at the Evangelical Theological Society last week.

The theologian now believes abuse can give grounds for divorce, on the premise that the decision is made with prayer and pastoral oversight.

Texas Governor Says ‘Glory of God’ Was Revealed through His Paralysis


Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in recent days gave a peek into his Christian faith and his theology, asserting on social media that God used, for good, an accident that placed him in a wheelchair.


Abbott, 62, has been paralyzed below the waist since 1984, when an oak tree fell on him while he was jogging, Dallas News reports. He was elected governor in 2014, after having served as state attorney general and associate justice of the Texas Supreme Court.


Last Friday, Abbott posted on Twitter a video of a muscular wheelchair-bound man making his way up a climbing wall, using only his hands.


“Never quit. Never give up. Overcome any challenge,” Abbott wrote in a message accompanying the video.


When a Twitter user responded with a negative comment – “so great to see but if I ever end up in a wheelchair I’m just ending it” – Abbott spoke up.


“That’s what I thought before I ended up in a wheelchair,” Abbott tweeted. “I’ve done more AFTER the accident that left me paralyzed than before that accident. With God all things are possible.”

Brits still see value in Christingle services to remember those in difficulty

The research carried out by The Children’s Society shed a light on Christingle services which help raise money for the most vulnerable children and young people in Britain.

Nearly half (48 per cent) of respondents said they knew what a Christingle service was, and a nostalgic 38 per cent of those surveyed said they remembered attending a Christingle service as a child.

 

The services are usually held from the start of December and run into the New Year, with Christmas Eve a particularly popular time. 

Mark Russell, chief executive of The Children’s Society, said: “Christingle services are a fun way to help us support young people at Christmas – so far over one million vulnerable children and young people have been helped by people across the country enjoying these distinctive celebrations. 

“The services are really special – they include hymns, messages of hope, readings and the chance to learn more about The Children’s Society. This year I hope many more people will see attending a Christingle as a tradition to look forward to.” 

The survey also sought to find out which sweets should top the iconic orange used to create Christingles.

The nation’s favourite sweet has been revealed by the survey as fudge, with fruit pastilles coming in second place and jelly babies a close third.

Three Baltimore men have had their murder convictions overturned after spending some 30 years behind bars. Alfred Chestnut, Ransom Watkins and Andrew Stewart were all released from prison Monday after receiving an apology from Circuit Court Judge Charles Peters on behalf of the criminal justice system that has caused them such heartache.


“On the inside, I hate to put it like this, but we went through hell,” Watkins said as he was mobbed by his family. “This is the day that the Lord has made. He has set the captives free … my journey is just beginning.”


Watkins’ sister, Dollie Boyd, said she had been pleading with God to let justice prevail and for her brother to be freed. “I just prayed to the Lord every day to bring my brother home. That’s all I ever wanted,” she said, according to USA Today.


Chestnut said he would be spending a period of time adjusting to life outside the four walls of his prison cell. “It’s a lot of guys that I left behind, that are in the same situation that I’m in,” he explained, as reported by CNN. “They need a voice. I had an opportunity, by the grace of God, to have someone who heard me.”

Government urged to collaborate with faith-groups in ‘decency’ manifesto

The Desiring Decency manifesto outlines the important role of faith-groups in society and calls for them to be recognised and properly funded.

Faith Action’s National Executive Director, Daniel Singleton tells Premier why the organisation wants to re-affirm the “understated” value of decency.

“It essentially gives people a good standard of living and a good interaction with one another. We can all have a sense of decency, rich or poor, young or old.”

The manifesto says the link between those in need and the faith-based services available to them need to be strengthened as they are often not known to the wider community.

Singleton explained: “One of the biggest problems we have in the UK is that 40 to 60 per cent of GP appointments are often non-medical things. Churches and faith groups are great destinations for people where those who are isolated could go to their parent and toddler group, could go to a lunch club or different things like that.”

Faith Action are asking for the skills, experience and benefits of faith-based organisations to be appropriately recognised and resourced.

 

Local authorities have also been challenged to sign a covenant to work in collaboration with faith groups to better serve communities, foster unity and combat loneliness.

The faith covenant has already been adopted by thirteen local authorities.

Christian rapper and three-time Grammy winner Toby Mac took to Twitter Sunday to thank the public for its support following the unexpected death of his oldest child and to extol the importance of faith and community.


“As we enter this week of Thanksgiving we have something we’d like to share… Such overwhelming love has surrounded us this last month,” Mac posted.  “We still don’t quite know which end is up but we do KNOW, we are loved. As we mourn our firstborn son, God has poured out His love on us through people. Reverend Doctor Paul Overend has now been charged by South Wales Police with one offence against a woman between April and July 1997, the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed.

It comes after the Bishop of Lincoln, Christopher Lowson, was suspended from office following alleged failures to adequately safeguard children and vulnerable people in May.

 

 

Reverend Overend is due to appear before Cardiff Magistrates Court on 4th December.

He was appointed as Canon Chancellor at Lincoln Cathedral in November 2017 to lead the cathedral’s work of public theology and Christian education, he stepped down from his post in April after a police investigation was launched.
