Pope urges Catholics to ‘communicate faith’ in Buddhist-majority Thailand

Thousands of Thais welcomed Francis as he travelled to St Peter’s Parish, a Catholic community outside Bangkok, to pray at the sanctuary of Thailand’s first martyred priest.

There, he told a few hundred priests and nuns that he read “with some pain” that for many Thais, Christianity is “a religion for foreigners”.

He said: “This should spur us to find ways to talk about the faith in dialect, like a mother who sings lullabies to her child.

“With that same intimacy, let us give faith a Thai face and flesh, which involves much more than making translations.”

Children dressed as monks and nuns, as well as real-life religious and ordinary Catholics, cheered him as he passed through the crowd outside the church in his Popemobile and later on foot.

It is the first time in a generation that Thais have seen a Pope up close, after John Paul II became the first pontiff to visit Thailand in 1984.

Pornnutcha Kruprasert, a 14-year-old training to be a nun from southern Prachuap Khiri Khan province, said she was “excited and delighted” to see the Pope.

“The Pope always has good thoughts for all youths,” she said cheerfully. “We can bring his teachings into real life.”

Jewish children targeted with ‘horrific’ anti-Semitic abuse on Tube

The man was filmed reading anti-Jewish bible passages to two young boys in skullcaps while they were travelling with their family on the Northern Line.

Chris Atkins took the video after catching the Tube heading south on the Charing Cross branch of the line at midday on Friday.

“I’ve lived in London for 20 years and you’re used to people ranting on the Tube – it was only after a minute I realised, ‘hang on this is really, really antisemitic’,” the 43-year-old journalist told the PA news agency.

“It was the children that really got me and everyone else, he was just screaming at these children. It was horrific in every sense.

“He seemed to be a very committed Christian and believed this was the word of God – that it said in the bible Jews killed Jesus and they are all slave masters.

“It’s the kind of stuff you see on Twitter a lot… but to hear someone actually say it unashamedly was shocking.”

Wearing a cap and hoody, the man is seen in the video threatening a man off-camera after he tries to intervene and a woman in a hijab also confronts him.

“The Muslim woman didn’t take any s*** from him and really, really took him to task, very firmly and persistently,” Mr Atkins said.

“In this day and age we are told how intolerant everyone is and all religions hate each other and there you had a Muslim woman sticking up…

Kanye West to stage first opera ‘Nebuchadnezzar’

Posting on Twitter, the rapper shared the artwork for the event – which featured a golden engraving of the eponymous Babylonian king.

The opera, which is directed by Italian performance artist Vanessa Beecroft, will take place at The Hollywood Bowl on November 24. The event will also feature music by Kanye’s Sunday Service performers, alongside Peter Colins & Infinities Song.

During a recent interview with Zane Lowe, Kanye also likened himself to Nebuchadnezzar while discussing his past Yeezus tour.

“[God] is saying, Let me take this Nebuchadnezzar-type character—Nebuchadnezzar was the king of Babylon, and he looked at his entire kingdom and said, I did this,” he said.

He added: “I stood on the top of the mountain talking about Yeezus, saying, ‘I’m a God’—I had a guy dressed as Jesus.”

Meanwhile, Kanye performed for prison inmates as he brought his Sunday Service show to a Houston jail over the weekend.

The rap star visited the Harris County Jail in Houston, Texas ahead of his appearance at Joel Osteen’s church in the city.

According to TMZ, Kanye and his choir turned up to the prison by surprise on Friday 15th November. The rapper stayed for a couple of hours to play to a select group of inmates and staff members.

A professionally-shot…

Vatican accused of harbouring bishop in sex abuse claims

Prosecutors in Argentina have issued an international arrest warrant for Bishop Gustavo Zanchetta, who is accused of sexually abusing young trainee priests, known as seminarians. He denies the charges.

Bishop Zanchetta, 55, who is close to his fellow Argentine Pope Francis, lives in the Vatican.

He reportedly resides in Casa Santa Marta, an accommodation block in the shadow of St Peter’s Basilica where Francis has lived ever since his election six years ago.

Argentinian prosecutors have complained that the bishop has failed to respond to repeated emails and telephone calls about the abuse allegations, which were made last year by two young seminarians. The trainee priests also accused him of mismanagement of the diocese’s finances and abuse of power.

If convicted, the bishop would face up to 10 years in prison, but there is no extradition treaty between Argentina and the Vatican and for now he seems to be safely ensconced in Rome.

The stand-off emerged as Pope Francis made an impassioned speech in Bangkok on behalf of victims of sex trafficking, prompting accusations of a double standard in the Catholic Church’s stance on sex crimes.

“Despite being suspended from ministry, the Vatican has argued that Zanchetta’s ‘daily work’ requires him to be in Rome instead of facing trial in Argentina. This decision is at best questionable and at worst a…

Dolly Parton ‘God called me’ to make music

She told People magazine: “I’ve done so many things,” Parton says. “And I see that I am in a position to help. People look at me like someone they’ve always known, like a mother or sister. If I say something good, people might listen.”

“I’ve just felt like God was calling me into that,” she adds. “I’ve always felt like my music was more my ministry than a job. I just feel that this day and time, we need more people that are in a position to help to try to do something, if they can, to brighten the world a little bit. That’s what I’m hoping to do now.”

Along with her for King & Country collaboration, Parton has also released two other faith-centric singles in the past several months, including ‘There was Jesus’ with Christian rock singer Zach Williams and ‘Faith’ with DJ duo Galantis. The latter, she says, “came to me out of the heavens.”

“[Galantis] sent the song to see if I’d be interested, and I just loved it,” she says. “So I did it. Now it’s out and people are really responding to it. It’s more of a dance song, as you know. But it’s a very spiritual message. It’s like God saying, ‘Have a little faith in me.’ So I was proud to be part of that whole thing.”

“I felt really blessed because I had decided just in the last few months that I was going to try to do more faith-based things or at least more uplifting music,” she continues. “Then right out of the blue came King and Country and their…

Atheist Group Says Kanye West’s Jail House Performance Violated the Constitution

Atheist Group Says Kanye West’s Jail House Performance Violated the Constitution

Kayne West’s recent concert at a Houston jail, which featured a choir and used songs from his new album, “Jesus is King,” was an “egregious” violation of the separation of church and state, a national atheist group alleges in a complaint filed with the local sheriff.

“This was about a superstar using his notoriety to pressure a captive audience into accepting his particular brand of religion,” said Andrew L. Seidel, director of Strategic Response for the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF).

In a four-page letter to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Seidel also requested that public records related to all correspondence, emails and concert notices between West’s team and officials from the jail or sheriff’s department be provided to FFRF within 10 days.

As Christian Headlines previously reported, West performed surprise concerts at both the men’s and women’s facilities on Nov. 15. West was in Houston that weekend as part of his national “Sunday Service” tour and spoke at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church.

During the jail concerts, several officials, including Gonzalez, tweeted out photos of the performances.

[email protected] and his choir brought some light and #churchservice to people who needed it today at the Harris County Jail. #HouNews,” Gonzalez posted with a link to a short YouTube clip.

Despite Popular Belief, Women Are More Pro-Life than Men, Gallup Poll Says

Despite Popular Belief, Women Are More Pro-Life than Men, Gallup Poll Says

Gallup’s newest survey on abortion is challenging the conventional wisdom that women are overwhelmingly pro-choice.

In fact, the latest Gallup data shows that most women are pro-life – and even are more pro-life than men.

Fifty-one percent of women consider themselves pro-life, according to the poll, while 46 percent of men do. Meanwhile, 43 percent of women and 48 percent of men call themselves pro-choice.

Women are more pro-life on Gallup’s other abortion-related topics, too:

  • 24 percent of women but 18 percent of men say abortion should be illegal in “all circumstances.”

  • 24 percent of women and 25 percent of men say it should be legal in all circumstances.

  • 50 percent of women but 56 percent of men say it should be “legal under certain circumstances.”

To be fair, the 2019 Gallup survey – conducted in May – may be a slight anomaly, and future surveys will determine if the current trend holds.

But historically, a significant percentage of women are pro-life in Gallup’s polling. In each survey since 2004, at least 43 percent of women have called themselves pro-life. And since 1979, the percentage of women who support legal abortion with no restrictions has never topped 34 percent – and in most years, hovers in the 20s.

“Many U.S. political leaders may think of abortion as a key ‘women’s issue,’ but it is…

Pastor Beaten Unconscious Faces Charges by Hindu Extremists in Jharkhand, India

Pastor Beaten Unconscious Faces Charges by Hindu Extremists in Jharkhand, India

NEW DELHI, November 22, 2019 (Morning Star News) – A pastor and his family in eastern India are facing police charges after Hindu extremists with an axe, bamboo rods and wooden sticks attacked them in their home, leaving the pastor for dead, sources said.

The eight assailants, including a policeman, who attacked pastor Basant Kumar Paul as he prayed in his home at 6 a.m. on Nov. 12 in Parihara, Garhwa District, Jharkhand state, also seriously injured his mother, son, wife and brother.

Pastor Paul, 45, fell unconscious from blows from wooden clubs, and members of his family were assaulted as they came to rescue each other one after the other, sources said.

“Because he fell unconscious, he was saved, otherwise he would have been killed,” said pastor Gautam Kumar, presbyter of Indian Pentecostal Church in Nalanda Patna in Bihar.

Pastor Paul said he sustained serious injuries to his head and the rest of his body.

“I cannot even lift my finger without pain,” Pastor Paul told Morning Star News. “If I touch my head, it pains severely and feels swelled.”

The pastor’s mother, Lakhpati Devi, sustained a head injury from an axe blow, as did his brother, Uday Ram. Pastor Paul’s wife, Shila Devi, sustained several internal injuries, and his 20-year-old son, Anugrah Raj, suffered injuries that required him to undergo knee replacement surgery on…

‘What You See Is What You Got’: Friends Say Mr. Rogers Was Kind, Compassionate in Public and Private

‘What You See Is What You Got’: Friends Say Mr. Rogers Was Kind, Compassionate in Public and Private

The world knew him as “Mister Rogers.” To Bill Isler, though, Fred Rogers was a co-worker and most importantly, a friend.

Isler was president and CEO of the Fred Rogers Company from 1987 until his retirement in 2016. He worked on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and also helped spearhead the making of a new legacy series, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, following Rogers’ death.

This month, though, Isler is promoting the new theatrical film, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (PG), which stars Tom Hanks as Rogers and tells the story of a magazine reporter who was changed for the better by meeting the famous children’s television show host. It opens this weekend.

Fred Rogers was the same person in private that he was in public, Isler said, referencing Rogers’ kind and compassionate qualities.

“What you see is what you got,” Isler told Christian Headlines. “The consistency was unbelievable. He treated everybody with an incredible amount of respect and dignity no matter who they were. I was always amazed at how consistent he was with people no matter who that person was.”

The faith-driven movie portrays Rogers as a patient man who wanted to teach children and adults how to love and forgive. It also puts Rogers’ Christian faith on display, showing him kneeling beside his bed and praying for individuals, by name….
