Supreme Court to Hear Oral Arguments on Trump’s Decision to End DACA

Supreme Court to Hear Oral Arguments on Trump’s Decision to End DACA

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments Tuesday on President Donald Trump’s decision to end the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

“Depending on how the court rules, it could have devastating consequences,” Eliana Fernández said in an interview, according to CBS News. “I would lose my protection against deportation, my opportunity to work, I would lose the opportunity to support my children.”

DACA currently protects about 700,000 undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. Most DACA recipients have lived in the U.S. most of their lives and attend American public schools and colleges.

Under the program, DACA recipients had to have arrived in the U.S. before they were 16 and lived in the country since at least 2007. The program protects them from deportations and allows them to work in the country.

“We’re able to contribute to the economy – not only by working and paying taxes, but we also travel, we consume and we have families now,” said Saira Barajas, a 26-year-old DACA recipient from Los Angeles.

The Cato Institute estimates that if DACA ends, the U.S. could lose hundreds of billions of dollars in economic growth over the next 10 years.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump promised to end DACA, but he also said, “it’s one of the most difficult subjects I have because you have these incredible kids —…

UMC Leaders Call for ‘New Form of Unity’ over LGBT Debate

UMC Leaders Call for ‘New Form of Unity’ over LGBT Debate

In the midst of a long-standing debate on LGBT issues, eight current and former bishops of the United Methodist Church have signed a statement calling for a “new form of unity” after years of discord, according to the Christian Post.

“The events transpiring since the adjournment of the Special Session of General Conference illustrate how deep our division is,” the statement said. “Sadly, even greater discord, chaos and fighting loom on the horizon at the 2020 General Conference in Minneapolis.

“This is why we recognize our beloved United Methodist Church no longer can continue in our current form of unity. It is time to quit undermining our mission. It is time for the entire church to come together to figure out how to be the people called Methodists in a new way—to seek a new form of unity.”

The debate has focused largely on the teachings of the Book of Discipline which states that homosexuality is “incompatible with Christian teaching.” In a 438-384 vote recently, delegates agreed to uphold the teaching. But an increasing number of bishops hope to create a more progressive Methodist denomination.

“It is time to end our conflict that undermines all our efforts to proclaim the Gospel,” the statement continued. “It is time to bless, support and free one another to be the church we feel God calls us to be.”

In 2020, delegates will discuss…

Fire Destroys Popular Christian Camp in Ohio

Fire Destroys Popular Christian Camp in Ohio

Popular Ohio-based Christian camp Skyview Ranch burned to the ground over the weekend.

Pastor Gary Adams told CBN News that around five o’clock in the morning, a fire ripped through the dining hall, kitchen and offices on November 10. No one was injured or killed in the fires and the cause is still unknown.

Located in Millersburg, Skyview Ranch celebrated its 50th anniversary this summer and employs 15 staff members who welcome around 9,000 campers a year.

According to Adams, the fire caused nearly $2 million in damage. He reached out to news outlets and campers on Facebook to ask them to pray for the funds. Until the buildings are restored, camp staff will find a temporary office space and regroup for the new year.

“God has a plan despite how devastating this is to our staff, families, and those who love Skyview,” a post read on the camp’s Facebook page.

“We will move forward in His grace to continue the work He has set before us. He is our rock and our foundation, this ministry isn’t built or defined by stuff but by people who are committed to giving Him glory in all things and at all times. The loss of our dining hall, offices, and everything inside hits us hard, but we know that the Lord is still working and is in control”

“Praise God that no one was hurt or worse. Thank you for your prayers.”

The post concluded with Romans 8:28 which reads, “And we know…

Record 10.2 Percent of TV Characters Are LGBT, New Report Shows

Record 10.2 Percent of TV Characters Are LGBT, New Report Shows

A record 10.2 percent of regular characters on primetime broadcast television shows in their current seasons are LGBTQ, according to a new report that also calls on the networks to aim for 20 percent by the year 2025.

Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s annual “Where We Are On TV” report examines the presence of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters on broadcast and cable television. It is the 24th year GLAAD has released the report.

Last year, 8.8 percent of regular characters on primetime broadcast TV were LGBTQ, and GLAAD subsequently issued a challenge for the networks to reach 10 percent.

“In a single year, broadcast surpassed that goal, climbing to a record-high 10.2 percent of broadcast series regulars being LGBTQ characters,” the report says.

A total of 90 regular characters in the 2019-20 primetime broadcast season are LGBTQ, according to the report, while 792 are straight.

Shows with LGBTQ representation include The CW’s Batwoman, in which the title character is lesbian, the CW’s Riverdale (Cheryl Blossom and Toni Topaz are lesbian), ABC’s Stumptown (Dex is bisexual), ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy(Doctors Levi Schmitt, Nico Kim and Casey Parker  are gay), Fox’s 9-1-1: Lone Star (Paul Strickland is transgender) and NBC’s Good Girls (Isaiah Stannard is transgender).

Father Demands Policy Change after School Gives 2nd-Grader Flyer Promoting Free Condoms

Father Demands Policy Change after School Gives 2nd-Grader Flyer Promoting Free Condoms

The father of a second-grader in Tennessee is demanding policy change within the school district after his child came home with a school-issued flyer promoting birth control, including condoms.

Rich Penkoski’s son is a second-grader at Mary Hughes Elementary School, which sent students home with a two-sided flyer advertising a free health clinic in Gray, Tenn., offering medical, dental and vision exams. The backside of the flyer, though, was dedicated to “free birth control and pre-pregnancy services.” Among the services: “free birth control including implants, IUDs, pills, condoms and more,” according to WCBY-TV.

The school is located in Piney Flats, a small town in East Tennessee.

“Why did the school feel it was appropriate to give this flyer to a seven-year-old?” Penkoski asked.

David Cox, the director of Sullivan County Schools, said the birth control information was placed on the back page of the flyer by mistake.

“What happened on the back of the information, there was another part that was inadvertently sent and it did say free birth control,” Cox told WCBY.

Penkoski, though, doesn’t believe it was inadvertent. He and Dale Walker, president of the Tennessee Pastors Network, appeared before the Sullivan County school board urging a change in policy.

“This is a full page,” Penkoski said, holding up the flyer….

Over 260 Prominent Evangelicals Pitch Restitution-Based Immigration Reform Plan

Over 260 Prominent Evangelicals Pitch Restitution-Based Immigration Reform Plan

More than 260 prominent evangelicals representing national ministries, denominations, universities and churches are seeking an immigration reform plan that would provide undocumented immigrants living in the United States a path to legal permanent residency—after making restitution.

The “Evangelical Call for Restitution-Based Immigration Reform”, announced Nov. 6, was drafted by the Evangelical Immigration Table and, according to its leaders, is urging that legal status be provided without resorting to mass deportation or amnesty, the two most polarizing issues of the ongoing debate.

The statement urges lawmakers to enact policies that would allow immigrants in the country illegally to earn Lawful Permanent Resident status if they acknowledge their violation of U.S. immigration laws and pay a significant fine as restitution. The restitution element is key, they maintain, because it upholds respect for the rule of law.

“As evangelical Christians, our approach to immigration policy is driven by biblical principles,” the statement read. Those principles include “respecting human dignity, respecting family unity, honoring the law and celebrating opportunities for redemption.”

The statement also acknowledges the need for secure borders, adding that the government has a “God-ordained responsibility to protect its citizens.”

“Deporting all…

Teenager Hailed ‘Hero’ after Saving Siblings in Devastating Attack in Mexico

Teenager Hailed ‘Hero’ after Saving Siblings in Devastating Attack in Mexico

After losing his mom and two brothers, 13-year-old Devin Langford is celebrated as a hero for saving his siblings.

“Oh yeah, he’s a hero,” said his dad, David Langford to ABC News. “He definitely saved his little brothers and sisters and I think he did it because of his love for them…He gave his life for them.”

The teenager survived the attack and managed to escape the car with his siblings. He took the surviving members as far as he could. When he couldn’t carry them any further, he hid them in the bushes, covering them with branches. He wasn’t sure if an attacker was following him, but he was determined to find help and ducked in the bushes as he walked 14 miles to La Mora to find assistance.

“What was going through my mind was to get help because every one of them was bleeding,” he said. “I wasn’t hit so I just kept walking. I prayed a lot and tried to hide in the bushes in case anyone was trying to follow me.”

His baby brother was also almost killed when a bullet grazed his chest, but he survived.

As Christian Headlines previously reported, the brutal attack occurred last week in Mexico when an alleged drug cartel shot the family’s convoy of cars and killed nine people, including three mothers and six children. Occurring in a region less than 100 miles from the Arizona border that is disputed among drug cartels, the…

Pastor travels half way round the world to prayer walk Irish border following prompt from God

Jarrod McKenna from Cornerstone Church, Perth, set out on the 31st October to walk the 499km border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and pray ahead of the UK’s exit from the EU.

An open border has been in place between the two countries allowing free passage of people since 1923 and preventing a hard border in the region has been a point of contention throughout Brexit negotiations.

McKenna, whose ancestors came from Ireland, told Premier he felt lead to serve communities impacted by the recent discussions over the Irish backstop.

“I just remember writing down ‘peace pilgrimage’, I woke from a dream with a very strong sense that that was what God was asking me to do.

“Brexit means a lot of pain for a lot of people on all sides. When I had this dream, it was very clear that what was being asked of me was to walk in such a way where I can listen and listen to the pain that this isn’t about people talking politics from afar, but any talk of a border brings back for people and unearths trauma and pastorally wanting to listen in such a way where those things can be heard and healed.”

McKenna started his border walk in the Northern Irish town of Newry.

Over the course of ten days he has visited a number of towns along the borderline, listening to the stories of locals and praying for healing and…

Landmark ‘eco-church’ opens in Bradford

The new building at the Methodist Church in Baildon is believed to be the first of its kind in Britain to be built to standards that reduce its ecological footprint and produce ‘ultra-low energy emissions.’

Enhanced insulation, electricity-generating panels and triple-glazing have all been incorporated into the build in order to comply with government targets to reach net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.

Rev Kerry Tankard, chair of the Yorkshire West Methodist District, referred to the building’s low carbon footprint, saying it “sits lightly on the earth” at its dedication ceremony on 3rd November.

The church has raised over £800,000 in the last 10 years to cover the cost of the building.

The upper level of the two storey building named ‘The Fold’ will facilitate a range of local community groups, while the lower floor will serve as a space for Baildon’s 40-year-old preschool.

John Anderson, trustee of Baildon Methodist Church, said: “Both Parliament and Bradford Council have declared a climate emergency. Baildon Methodist Church is not just wringing its hands over this, not just talking about it: it has acted.

“The design of the Fold challenges those constructing new buildings to reach the same standards so that we may meet the government’s targets of net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.”

Two hundred people attended the opening service, including the…

Jordan Refuses Israel’s Invitation to 25th Anniversary Celebration of Peace Agreement

Jordan Refuses Israel’s Invitation to 25th Anniversary Celebration of Peace Agreement

When Israel announced it would be holding a commemorative event to mark the 25th anniversary of its peace agreement with Jordan, they were optimistic that their neighbor would attend. Unfortunately, Jordan refused, marking a fresh set of diplomatic problems between the two nations.

The 1994 peace agreement, which allowed Israel access to the area of Naharayim, a strip of land just below the Sea of Galilee, has been undermined in recent years. In 2018, Jordan informed Israel that it would not be renewing the leasing of land under Annex 1 of the agreement, which refers to the agreed Jordanian sovereignty over Naharayim. Now, that threat has come to fruition.

Speaking of the diplomatic snub, Israeli foreign minister Yisrael Katz said the breakdown in relations is due to “the complicated reality within Jordan.”

“With all due diplomatic sensitivity, I have to say that Israel did want to have a ceremony [together with Jordan],” he explained, according to the Times of Israel. “They said that the [Israeli] government forgot and did not ask to have an event. The government did not forget; it asked [the Jordanian authorities], but it did not happen,” he added.

Tensions between the two countries were further illustrated by the lack of Jordanian representation at Monday’s conference on Israeli-Jordanian relations – not even the ambassador…
