Christian Worship Song Emerges as Anthem for Hong Kong Protests
The year Linda Lee Stassen-Benjamin penned the Christian worship song, “Sing Hallelujah to the Lord,” OPEC ended its oil embargo against the United States, America and Russia met to discuss nuclear disarmament, India tested an atomic device and President Richard Nixon resigned after being impeached during the Watergate scandal. It was 1974 and the cost of a first-class stamp was just 8 cents.
Forty-five years later, the song, written as a tribute for Easter, has emerged as an anthem for the ongoing protests in Hong Kong. The protests began in June after the government announced plans to extradite suspects to China for criminal prosecution. The plan was later suspended, but protestors continue to push for democratic reforms, fearing communist China will do away with the existing “one country, two systems” model implemented when Britain returned its former colony back to China 22 years ago, Religion News Service reported.
The Hong Kong song and Christian involvement emerged early in the protest movement but was highlighted once again on Aug. 23 when Christians organized their first large-scale rally in Chater Garden. ‘In Christ Alone’ writer awarded ‘Freedom of the City’ honour
Kristyn Getty, together with her husband Keith – best known for writing ‘In Christ Alone’ – which is reportedly sung by over 40 million people each year, received the news at a meeting of council on Tuesday evening.
Freedom of the City is an hour bestowed by the local council to recognise the impact a person or persons have had on a city.
The northern Irish duo have toured the world performing their worship songs, which feature in many modern day hymn books, including ones used at the Royal Albert Hall in London and Carnegie Hall in New York.
Keith Getty, who was awarded an OBE for his contribution to Christian music in 2017, grew up in Lisburn and attributes his talent and dedication to Christian music to his formative years growing up in Northern Ireland supported by family, friends and the congregation of Elmwood Presbyterian Church.
Keith and Kristyn also founded “New Irish Arts” back in 1994, encouraging people from across Ireland to engage in church music, of which Getty is still honorary president today.

Popeyes Runs out of Chicken Sandwiches, So a Chick-fil-A Worker Walks over to Help
When a North Carolina Popeyes ran out of chicken sandwiches, a worker at an adjacent Chick-fil-A walked over with sandwiches from his own restaurant for Popeyes customers and stressed-out employees.
The incident in Greensboro, N.C., occurred as Popeyes restaurants nationwide were running low on the chicken sandwiches, which were introduced this month. The chain eventually sold out of the new menu item.
Jené Walker and her coworker were driving to their local Greensboro Popeyes to purchase the sandwiches when they saw a man holding Chick-fil-A bags outside the building. At first, she thought it was a Popeyes employee.
“I was joking with him, like, ‘What are you doing over here? That’s weird you’re over here with a Chick-fil-A bag at Popeyes.’ Just the timing was weird,” Walker said, according to Fox 4 News.
The man, though, was a Chick-fil-A employee who had brought Chick-fil-A sandwiches to the Popeyes workers “out of the kindness of his heart,” Walker said. The Popeyes restaurant – like many restaurants nationwide – had experienced long lines filled with people wanting the sandwiches. Demand was greater than the supply.
Walker took pictures of the incident and posted it on Facebook. Her post went viral.
