Coach of No. 1 Clemson: My Purpose Is ‘to Glorify God’

The head coach of the top-ranked college football team and the defending national champions says life isn’t all about sports.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said during his press conference this week he wants his team to focus on one word this year: purpose. But Swinney – whose team is ranked No. 1 in the major polls – defines “purpose” differently than many football fans would.

“My word is ‘purpose’ this year – my purpose as a man, my purpose as a father, my purpose as a husband, and then our purpose as a program. …. And then also helping my staff and my players find and fulfill their purpose.

“[I’m] just really convicted on that. We’ve had a lot of success, I’m going into year 11, but we’ve stayed true to who we are the whole way. … I know what my purpose as a man is, and that’s to glorify God. That’s to be a great husband and father, and it’s to use the game of football to equip young people for life. That’s just that simple.”

Swinney’s first full year as a head coach was 2009, one year after the Tigers finished 7-6. Since then, they’ve won two national…

Archbishop pleas investors to help tackle climate emergency

The Most Rev Justin Welby described climate change as “the most pressing investment challenge of our time”, and urged the investment community to take “environmental, social and governance factors” into account when making decisions.

Mr Welby’s comments come a day after he confirmed he would be willing to chair a citizens’ forum on Brexit “in principle” after being approached by senior MPs, but conditions on him accepting the role “have not yet been met”.

In a video message for the Global Ethical Finance Initiative (GEFI) ahead of this autumn’s world summit on ethical finance in Edinburgh, Mr Welby said: “Money is not morally neutral – it can do harm and it can do good.

“At the very least it is the responsibility of investors to take account of environmental, social and governance factors in their investment decisions and in their stewardship of their assets.

“At its best, ethical finance can drive positive change in the world, while still being responsible for its investors.

“It can ensure that while meeting investors’ risk return requirements, investments benefit people and planet.

“I’d like to focus for the next few moments on the most pressing investment challenge of our time – climate change.

“Because frankly, the investment community has still not sufficiently stepped up to the plate on this.

“I’ve seen for myself the devastation of climate change – I’ve seen…

Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, and 140 Musicians Sign Off on New Planned Parenthood Campaign

Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, and 140 Musicians Sign Off on New Planned Parenthood Campaign

Nearly 140 musicians from across the musical spectrum, including Lady Gaga, John Legend, Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus, are featured in a full-page ad supporting Planned Parenthood’s new “#Bans Off My Body” campaign.

The Aug. 24 Billboard ad, “Band Together, Bans Off,” asks fans to learn more about abortion restrictions and to use their social media accounts to promote the campaign by signing a national petition calling for the end of abortion bans. They hope to garner at least 500,000 signatures by next January’s anniversary of the historic Roe v. Wade decision.

Planned Parenthood has enlisted the help of celebrities as it deals with the fallout of what it calls “draconian” restrictions to abortion access. Already this year, more than two-dozen laws have been implemented across the country to protect the lives of the unborn, including those covering informed consent, heartbeat detection, abortion clinic regulations and parental involvement. All of the laws impose new restrictions and none are outright bans, although the window allowing abortions has tightened significantly due to some of the bills.

The orchestrated campaign also includes a strategy by Planned Parenthood to use numerous music festivals, including Philadelphia’s Made in America and Music Midtown in Atlanta, to promote easy access to abortions, while some musicians also plan…

Bishops open letter raises concerns of potential no deal Brexit

The letter comes a day after the Archbishop of Canterbury confirmed he would be willing to chair a citizens’ forum on Brexit “in principle” after being approached by senior MPs.

But the Most Rev Justin Welby said conditions to him accepting the role “have not yet been met”. He told MPs they must not use a public forum as a way of attempting to stop Brexit.

He said: “It is an unexpected privilege to be asked to chair this proposed citizens’ forum on Brexit.”

The bishops said in their letter they “support this move to have all voices in the current Brexit debate heard.”

25 Bishops have signed the letter, in which they raise concerns about the potential cost of a no deal Brexit to those least resilient to economic shocks.

In the letter they said as bishops with pastoral responsibilities in communities across urban and rural England, “we respond to the call by Jesus to tell the truth and defend the poor. We also recognise that our obligations go beyond England and impact on relations with the wider UK and our neighbours in the EU.

“Exiting the EU without an agreement is likely to have a massive impact on all our people and the Government is rightly preparing for this outcome.

“The Government believes that leaving the EU on 31 October is essential to restoring trust and confidence. It is unlikely, however, that leaving…

Church in Algeria Fends off Authorities’ Attempt to Close It

Church in Algeria Fends off Authorities’ Attempt to Close It

TIZI-OUZOUAlgeria, August 27, 2019 (Morning Star News) – A brigade of gendarmerie showed up at an evangelical worship site in Algeria on Monday (Aug. 26) to execute the latest of several church closure orders from provincial authorities, but Christian leaders thwarted the attempt.

When Akbou gendarmerie parked their vehicles at 9:30 a.m. at the church courtyard in Ighzer Amokrane, 192 kilometers (119 miles) east of Algiers, the building was filled with about 200 Christians from different churches united in prayer and worship, and protest banners hung from the walls: “NO to the unjust closing of the churches,” and, “Abrogation of Law 03/06.”

Authorities had issued a warning earlier this month that the 300-member Ighzer Amokrane church would be closed.

The officers, armed with police weaponry, cautiously got out of their vehicles.

A church elder, a council member of the legally recognized umbrella group of Protestant churches in Algeria, the Protestant Church of Algeria (l’Église Protestante d’Algérie, or EPA) and their attorney greeted them, backed by Christians from 33 churches, sources said.

The attorney, Wahab Chiter, asked to see the closure order. After reading it, he told the brigade chief that it was invalid because the provincial chief was not empowered to sign such an order, sources said. A closure order for a place of worship, he explained, can come…

First Chinese bishop ordained under Vatican deal

Priests and bishops in China need to be approved by the state and align with the country’s official church – a law which the Vatican has contested since its introduction in 1951.

As a result, the country’s 12 million Catholics have been split between the government-run Chinese Patriotic Catholic association in which the Communist Party select clergy members and the Vatican lead Catholic Church that operates underground.

The relationship between the Holy See and Beijing has been strained by the disagreement for decades.

A deal was agreed in September last year to allow both authorities to have a say on the appointment of bishops.

On Monday Yao Shun received the papal mandate – a response of the Pope, for his ordination as Bishop of Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia.

Although the Vatican has informally recognised a number of Chinese bishops in the past, it confirmed ordination of the new bishop, who it named as Antonio Yao Shun, was “the first to take place in the framework of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China”.

Despite efforts to restore relations between Beijing and the Holy See, the agreement made last year sparked controversy among Catholic leaders.

Hong Kong’s outspoken Cardinal Joseph Zen accused the Vatican of “selling out” by endorsing government appointed bishops and called the deal “a major step toward…

Seven Steps towards a Greater Gospel Focus in Your Church

By Sam Rainer

Most of the unchurched are not anti-church. Few are highly antagonistic to the gospel. In fact, only about 5% of unchurched Americans are highly antagonistic to the gospel. Euangelion is the Greek word for good news, or gospel. Have believers today lost the “good” in good news? Negativity undoubtedly sells. Negative news reports get more eyeballs, as do negative posts on social media and blogs.

Eighty percent of churchgoers believe they have a personal responsibility to share their faith, yet 61% of them had not told another person about Christ in the last six months. The vast majority of Christians believe they should share their faith, but few actually do. Christians should be eternal optimists. The good news should compel us outward with love. If you’re leading a church, what can you do about the fact that most believers don’t share their faith?

Step 1: Admit the problem. In my own denomination, baptism follows conversion, and 25% of churches baptize no one in a given year. Additionally, more than half of churches in my denomination baptize less than one person every two months. Your church may be an anomaly, but most are struggling to reach people for Christ. And church leaders must do more than recognize the statistical reality. Church leaders must admit they are part of the problem as well.

Step 2: Lead by example. Evangelistic churches have evangelistic leaders. Though not an impossibility, I’ve yet to hear of an outwardly-focused church with inwardly-focused…
