37 Percent of Public School Teachers Are Evangelical Christians, Poll Finds

More than one-third of public school teachers are evangelical Christians, according to a new survey that also found the general public supports Bible classes in school.

The 51st annual PDK Poll of the Public’s Attitudes Toward the Public Schools polled teachers, parents and the general public about their opinions on schools.

Thirty-seven percent of all public school teachers are evangelical Christians, according to the poll. That figure mostly matches the percentage of the public (36 percent) that is evangelical Christian.

But on ideology, public school teachers are slightly more liberal than the general public. Forty percent of teachers call themselves “liberal,” compared to 28 percent of the public. Twenty-eight percent of teachers and 34 percent of the public are conservatives. Thirty-one percent of teachers and 34 percent of the public are moderates.

Politically, public school teachers are a little more likely to be Democrats, too. Thirty-nine percent of teachers but 34 percent of the public consider themselves Democrat. Twenty-five percent of teachers and 26 percent of all adults call themselves Republican.

Teachers and Public Back Bible Classes

Among all adults, a total of 64 percent favor Bible classes in school, with 58 percent saying such classes should be an elective and 6 percent saying the classes should be required. Support for Bible…

From Pastor to Politician: Faith Leaders Poised to Make Moral Change by Running for Office

From Pastor to Politician: Faith Leaders Poised to Make Moral Change by Running for Office

A movement is stirring amongst evangelical pastors eager to enact change in America. Later this week, nearly 400 pastors and leaders will meet in Lynchburg, Virginia to discuss how to successfully restore Judeo-Christian principles across the country through political elections.

The American Renewal Project, started by political influencer David Lane and his pastor Rob McCoy in 2015, aims to train pastors and leaders in political sessions while also encouraging each of them to run for office.

“I am convinced that the pastor and pews model was instrumental in the 2016 election of President Trump and has been instrumental in numerous statewide elections for congressional, US Senate and gubernatorial races,” said Mike Huckabee, former presidential candidate and Fox News contributor.

According to CBN, ARP remained active during Trump’s campaign where the president won 81 percent of the white conservative evangelical vote. ARP spent $9 million in the 60 days before the general election in six battleground states, including Florida, Ohio and North Carolina.

In 2015, ARP launched its first-ever “Issachar Training Sessions.” Issachar, which comes from 1 Chronicles 12:32, are “men who understood the times.” The next year, around 200 pastors volunteered to run for office. In 2018, 300 more stepped to the plate. ARP’s goal for 2020 is for 1,000…

‘School Prayer Zone’ Signs Showing up Near South Carolina Schools

‘School Prayer Zone’ Signs Showing up Near South Carolina Schools

As students and parents prepare for a new school year in Richland County, South Carolina, they’ll be greeted by a sign different than usual: one inviting them to pray.

The “School Prayer Zone” signs look similar to regular road signs but feature green male and female stick figures praying. 2 Chronicles 7:14, a verse that tells God’s people to pray, repent and seek Him, is also included in the bottom right corner, according to CBN News.

Vanessa Frazier, founder and director of Christ Teens, brainstormed the idea after working behind the attendance desk in a local high school. Christ Teens is a nonprofit outreach intended to “train ‘soldiers’ to possess the land around public schools — all within the law!”

Frazier worked with the South Carolina Department of Transportation for three years and hopes the signs will “create a wall of prayer around the schools.”

The signs are placed on privately owned properties of churches near schools in order to maintain church and state boundaries, making the signs legal.

Jane Jorgenson, wife of the pastor at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, was immediately interested in the idea of putting up a sign on their property. “God brings peace to hearts and lives if we ask,” she said. “If high school kids see this sign as they go to school, if they could get into the habit of praying for their problems, it could help…

Vice President Mike Pence Is Criticized for Saying He Prays for His Critics

Vice President Mike Pence Is Criticized for Saying He Prays for His Critics

Vice President Mike Pence, who has been routinely criticized for his faith, said he handles such attacks by praying for his critics—which garnered him a few more.

“No. 1 is, spend more time on your knees than on the internet,” Pence said during an Aug. 6 Q & A session with Michael Farris, president and CEO of Alliance Defending Freedom. The gathering included ADF staff.

The vice president went on to talk about the power of forgiveness.

“As a Christian believer, we’re charged to pray for our loved ones but also pray for our enemies,” Pence said.

“You have lots of opportunities in politics to do that,” he said. “But I would say that forgiveness is a great gift, and my wife and I literally try to work through forgiving people who might speak woefully against us or might mischaracterize who we are and what our family’s all about,” he said.

Since taking office Pence has been targeted numerous times for his biblical approach to living.

As covered by Christian Headlines early in the Trump administration, the vice president was ripped on social media for saying he protects his marriage by avoiding situations where he is alone with a woman.

Earlier this year, 2020 Democrat presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, who served as mayor of South Bend, Indiana while Pence was governor of the state, challenged the vice president’s biblical view of…

Prayer protest planned in response to climate change report

The two week protest planned for 7th October, will involve a ‘faith bridge’ – where 24/7 prayer would be taking place together with non-violent direct action in central London.

Information released on Thursday by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – the world body for assessing the state of climate change, highlighted the potential dangers of the climate crisis to human life, if more was not done to stem its effects.

The study claims that 70-percent of the world’s ice-free land is affected by human activity.

While our food system alone creates a third of greenhouse gas emissions, the IPCC has warned that we need to improve the way forests are managed and food is grown to reduce pressure on land and resources.

CCA, the Christian wing of Extinction Rebellion is calling for immediate action to protect future generations.

CCA member Holly-Anna Petersen said: “Every report which comes out from the IPCC paints an increasingly bleak picture of the state of the world around us.

“Young people are pleading for us to act, because it is their futures which are at stake.

“A justice issue is already happening across our very dinner tables. Every minute that we do not take action, is a minute that we put our own desires above the needs of children.”

The United Nations’ latest study follows a warning last year, that “unprecedented” action must be taken to cut carbon emissions to zero by 2050.

China Tears Down Churches’ 10 Commandments, Hangs Portrait of President Xi Jinping

China Tears Down Churches’ 10 Commandments, Hangs Portrait of President Xi Jinping

The Chinese government’s opposition to the Ten Commandments has led to bloody confrontations between government leaders and Christians – and in at least a few churches, the Ten Commandments being replaced with portraits of Communist leaders.

Government officials across China last year began forcing churches either to take down the Ten Commandments or to erase the First Commandment: “You shall have no other gods before me.”

The policy has sparked shocking violations of human rights and religious liberty.

The Ten Commandments in many churches have been replaced with portraits of communist revolution leader Mao Zedong and current Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to Bitter Winter, a religious liberty watchdog. Officials often tell the churches “things will be tough” if they don’t cooperate.

A local government official told Bitter Winter that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is opposed to the First Commandment. In China, only the government and its leaders are to be worshipped.

“Christianity claims that no other goods should be worshiped,” the official said.

Still, some churches – even government-approved Three-Self congregations – are pushing back. Members of a Three-Self church in Zhengzhou city in the province of Henan tried stopping the forced removal of a Ten Commandments sign and poster Jan. 4. Three church…

Weather prayers at New Wine as more festivals cancelled

Thousands are gathered in Peterborough for the annual ‘United’ event.

With thundery storms expected overnight and most of Friday – a message sent to delegates has suggested changes to the conference will be necessary.

The festival is due to finish on Saturday evening, with those camping expected to leave on Sunday morning.

In their message on Thursday, organisers said: “We will be making a decision at 6pm tonight as to what our programme will look like from tomorrow.

“Please join us at 3.30pm in the Arena to pray.”

It comes as a number of secular festivals announced they would be cancelled due to the bad weather.

The organisers of Houghton – a dance music event in Norfolk this weekend – have posted on Facebook to say they’re “utterly devastated”.

They say conditions on site have “dramatically worsened” and are “set to deteriorate further”.

Earlier this week Boardmasters in Cornwall was cancelled just hours before the gates were due to open.

Other Christian events taking place this week include Creation Fest in Cornwall and Edge Fest in Somerset.

Foreign Christians Arrested on Charges of ‘Converting’ in Nepal

Foreign Christians Arrested on Charges of ‘Converting’ in Nepal

NEW DELHI, Aug. 8, 2019 (Morning Star News) – A Christian from South Korea arrested in Nepal on charges of “attempting to convert” was released on bail on Wednesday (Aug. 7), sources said.

Cho Yusang, a 73-year-old evangelical Christian, posted bail of 150,000 Nepalese rupees (US$1,330) after being arrested on July 23. His health deteriorated after he was incarcerated, and he had been hospitalized, said Tanka Subedi, chair of the Religious Liberty Forum Nepal (RLFN).

On Monday (Aug. 5), Subedi told Morning Star News that Cho had been released from hospital care.

“Though he was out of hospital, he was feeling dizzy this morning also,” Subedi said. “His health is still not good. He does not want to go back to the hospital, because he does not have much money left. He does not have insurance cover to pay his bills.”

In Nepal on a business visa, Cho was also charged with misuse of visa.

The charge of “attempting to convert” under Section 158 (1) of the Nepal Penal Code of 2017 calls for as much five years in jail and/or a fine of up to 50,000 Nepalese Rupees (US$445), according to Subedi.

Cho and two other foreigners working separately from him were found involved in conversion activity in Pokhara, in central Nepal, Raj Kumar KC, spokesperson of the District Police Office in Kaski, reportedly said.

Police arrested Cho for allegedly distributing…

Vicar encourages prayer as police officer stabbed on London street

Rev Maria Holmden from All Saints was speaking after the incident which saw the PC suffer stab wounds to his head and hand in what the Metropolitan Police are calling a “frenzied” and “unprovoked” attack.

The officer was struck by a machete while carrying out routine checks on a van in Leyton, in east London. He’s expected to make a full recovery.

A man’s been arrested.

Encouraging people to pray for those caught up in the incident, Rev Holmden said: “I don’t want to put my feelings on them but I can imagine that they would be feeling a bit anxious about the next time they have to stop someone and someone gets aggressive. It’s a scary thing. I think they’re very brave to do the job that they do.

“From the reports I’ve seen, the police officer who was injured had a colleague who actually arrested the person, whether or not that colleague may be having some post-traumatic stress I don’t know, because I know they have training and support in the police, but pray that God will help the colleague be able to cope with the situation and to find comfort and support.

“Pray too for the injured officer for his recovery and for his family.”

Boris Johnson has offered his sympathies to the police officer and says the attack in Leyton last night “underscores the bravery” of our police, and shows the importance of investing in them.

Trump Visits El Paso and Dayton, Shares the Need for Better Gun Control

Trump Visits El Paso and Dayton, Shares the Need for Better Gun Control

President Donald Trump made trips to Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas this week to talk with the victims of the recent shootings.

According to CBN News, Trump and the first lady visited a hospital in Dayton where victims of Sunday’s shooting were taken after the attack. He also thanked first responders and the hospital staff for their work following the shooting.

He also said better background checks are needed for people wanting to buy guns.

“I think background checks are important,” he said. “I don’t want to put guns into the hands of mentally unstable people, or people with rage or hate. Sick people.”

As Christian Headlines previously reported, the shooter in Dayton, Connor Betts, killed nine people after he opened fire at a nightlife district in Dayton. He allegedly had a long history of mental illness. Police do not have a motive yet for his attack.

“He was interested in what makes terrible people do terrible things,” Adelia Johnson, a woman who once reportedly dated Betts said. She added that he was “fascinated” with mass shootings and “he wanted to know what led a person to do those things.”

Trump also visited El Paso where he was met with protestors gathered to rally against Trump’s visit.

Director of Border Network of Human Rights, Fernando Garcia, said, “It is the narrative that is coming from the presidency of the United States, from…
