Jury begins deliberation on man accused of missing Christian student’s murder
Shohfah-El Israel is alleged to have killed 20-year-old Joy Morgan in December.
The University of Hertfordshire student has not been seen since Boxing Day and a body has never been recovered, Reading Crown Court has heard.
Ms Morgan and the defendant, of Cricklewood, north London, were members of the Israel United in Christ church in Ilford, east London – which, the trial heard, has rules including a ban on pre-marital sex and women not being alone in the company of men other than their husbands.
Israel, whose birth name is Ajibola Shogbamimu, has been described by the prosecution as a “thoroughly dishonest and manipulative” man who lied about Ms Morgan staying at his flat for two nights after a church celebration dinner.
He eventually told officers he dropped her off at her Hatfield accommodation on December 28, claiming he initially failed to tell the truth because he was worried about having broken church rules by having a woman who was not his wife staying alone with him.
Ms Morgan regularly took lifts to church with Israel and his wife and he said she was considered “100% part of the family”.
Giving evidence, he said he allowed her to stay at his flat because she was “upset” and that she revealed to him she was “leaving the church”.

Katy Perry’s Hit ‘Dark Horse’ Copied Christian Rapper’s Song, Jury Finds
Katy Perry’s hit song Dark Horse illegally copied the underlying beat from a tune by the Christian rapper Flame, a Los Angeles jury concluded Tuesday.
The nine-member federal jury unanimously ruled that Perry and her writing team violated copyright laws by lifting the beat from Christian rapper Flame’s song Joyful Noise.
Dark Horse spent 45 weeks on Billboard’s radio play chart, including two weeks at No. 1 in 2014. It was No. 1 on the on-demand chart for 10 weeks.
Although Joyful Noise isn’t as well-known as Dark Horse, it nevertheless has millions of views on YouTube.
Perry and her writing team said they had never heard Joyful Noise. The underlying beat, her attorney argued, was a “commonplace” rhythm.
“They’re trying to own basic building blocks of music, the alphabet of music that should be available to everyone,” Perry’s lawyer, Christine Lepera, said during closing arguments, according to Rolling Stone.
The jury, though, disagreed. Jurors will decide this week how much Flame is owed, Rolling Stone reported.
Joyful Noise was included on an album, Our World: Redeemed, that was nominated for a Grammy.

Justin Welby set for pastoral visit to Christians in India
Following a visit to Sri Lanka to stand in solidarity with Christians and victims of the Easter bombings, Justin Welby will be travelling to India on the 31st August to visit Kottayam, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Medak, Jabalpur, Kolkata and Amritsar.
The main focus of Mr Welby’s visit will be to listen to the concerns of local Christians across the Church and provide pastoral encouragement and prayer as he visits believers and outreach projects serving diverse communities across the country.
Among his engagements, Mr Welby will visit Jabalpur in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh ‘to learn about a minority Christian community that is a force for good in wider society”, as he attends the opening of a Christian-run rural school.
Mr Welby is also expected to visit the Henry Martin Institute in Hyderabad – a specialist centre for inter-religious studies, to deliver an address on Christian prayer to religious leaders from Hindu, Muslim, Sikh backgrounds, together with various Christian denominations, to encourage discussion on religious diversity and the benefits of learning together.
A pilgrimage to the site of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre – where thousands of unarmed Indians were shot by British troops, has also been planned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the tragedy.

Abortionist Practices on Papayas: ‘It’s Even More Satisfying When it’s a Real’ Baby
Papayas are a delicious tropical fruit enjoyed by millions of Americans, but for abortion doctors, they’re also a great way to teach medical students and the general public about abortion.
The use of papayas in abortion classes began around 2005, when two professors at the University of California, San Francisco, published a paper noting the similarities in size between a papaya and a uterus, Vice.com reported. Papayas, the professors argued, could benefit medical students and nurses in training.
But now abortion doctors are holding papaya workshops for the general public – not with the goal of teaching the population how to perform abortion but instead with the aim to “demystify and destigmatize” abortion, Vice said.
Vice writer Marie Solis attended such a workshop for the public in New York City. It was hosted by abortion doctor Zoey Thill.
“Thill said she wanted to educate people about what an abortion procedure entails – information she believes shouldn’t belong only to doctors – to help combat fear, misinformation, and stigma,” Solis wrote.
Different parts of the papaya represent specific parts of the uterus.

18 years for priest who abused schoolboys at Catholic seminary
Father Michael Higginbottom targeted two children separately while they boarded at St Joseph’s College, a school for students aged 12 to 18 in Upholland, Lancashire.
During a two-week trial at Burnley Crown Court, jurors heard that he “regularly, systematically and horrifically” abused the boys, with prosecutor David Temkin saying: “They were both threatened with violence and both were struck with a strap or a belt.”
After being convicted of five counts of buggery and seven of indecent assault, 76-year-old Higginbottom was jailed for 18 years, half in prison and half on licence.
Judge Andrew Woolman, sentencing Higginbottom on Tuesday, told him: “You were in the highest position of trust in relation to these boys, who you abused in a quite appalling way.
“I have no doubt that you specifically targeted these boys.
“These acts were accompanied, time after time, by threats or actual violence under the guise of a normal school punishment.”
Higginbottom was originally found guilty at Liverpool Crown Court in April 2017 of offences relating to the first complainant, but these convictions were quashed in November last year by the Court of Appeal.
It was ruled then that a retrial would be necessary as jurors had not been given full details of the complainant’s conviction for fraud by false representation, which were not available at the time of the original trial.

Drew Brees Partners with Prestonwood Baptist Church to Start Flag Football League for Youth
Texas church Prestonwood Baptist Church will host the first Football ‘N’ America league, a co-ed flag football program for youth in Texas.
The church’s sports outreach ministry, Prestonwood Sports Organization, is partnering with New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees as part of the program, CBN News reports.
The church’s Football ‘N’ America league is for youth in kindergarten through 4th grade. The season starts Saturday, Sept. 14.
“We stress the importance of teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship while promoting the fundamentals of the great game of football in a fun, family-friendly, safe and competitive environment,” the Play FNA website says.
Prestonwood Sports Organization says their mission is to promote competitive play in a positive environment while helping youth develop spiritually, physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally.
FNA’s motto is “Friends, Family and Football.”
“Flag football is something I played until my freshman year of high school,” Brees shared in a promotional video on the organization’s website. “I learned the fundamentals of the game through flag football and I developed my passion for the game by participating in it.”
