On his personal faith

While the vast majority of his predecessors have been vocal about their Christian faith, Johnson has remained coy on the issue. He did however attempt to describe his faith using an interesting analogy:

“I suppose my own faith, you know, it’s like a bit like trying to get Virgin Radio when you’re driving through the Chilterns. It sort of comes and goes. I mean sometimes the signal is strong, and then sometimes I’m afraid it just vanishes. And then it comes back again.”

On the importance of prayer

Boris Johnson attended the Global Day of Prayer at the former stadium of West Ham United as Mayor of London. While he prayed with the estimated 10,000 gathered he later labelled a campaign by the National Secular Society to ban parliamentary prayers “cobblers”.

Following the release of a review into the persecution of Christians earlier this month, the new Conservative Party leader vowed to protect religious freedom if he was elected as Prime Minister.

Boris Johnson tweeted: “I welcome the Foreign Office’s review published today into the persecution of Christians abroad. If I am fortunate enough to become PM, I will always prioritise protecting religious freedoms and stand up for those facing persecution.”

Commissioned in December by Jeremy Hunt, the report’s findings showed that 80 percent of religiously motivated attacks in the world are against Christians and that this should now be called ‘Christophobia’.

The review used evidence from the Open Doors World Watch List, the annual ranking of the top 50 countries where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Open Doors also submitted detailed evidence about persecution of Christians in specific countries and situations.

The Bishop of Truro released a number of recommendations alongside the report, which parliament committed to accept in full.

Greek police identified the suspect of the accused crime, Yiannis Paraskakis in a tweet and revealed he is currently in custody, charged with the rape and murder of Dr Suzanne Eaton. 

Prof Eaton went missing on 2^nd July while attending a conference near Chania on the island of Crete.

Her body was found six days later in an abandoned underground storage site used during World War II. 

Police Major Eleni Papathanasiou, a spokeswoman for the Crete Police, said Eaton was attacked after going out for a daily walk. 

Papathanasiou added: “The suspect reported that on July 2, 2019…motivated by the intention to commit sexual assault, he hit her twice with his car to stop her. 

“According to his claims, he placed the victim, unconscious, in the trunk of his car and transferred her to a ventilation drain in the wartime storage (tunnel), where after raping her, abandoned her there.” 

Paraskakis’ father has acknowledged the “heinous and appalling way” the scientist was killed. 

In a letter sent to the press, the suspect’s father said: “As a human being and a priest, and entirely in agreement with the prevailing sentiment, I am devastated at the heinous and appalling way one of our fellow humans lost her life, even more so that the perpetrator of this crime is my own child.

In a post on twitter, Bishop Sentamu asked people to join him in praying that God would give wisdom, insight and concern for the common good to those responsible for governance and parliamentary democracy.

His prayer to UK parliament read: “God of eternal love and power, save our Parliamentary Democracy; protect our High Court of Parliament and all it’s members from partiality and prejudice; that they may walk humbly the path of kindness, justice and mercy.

“Give them wisdom, insight and a concern for the common good.

“The weight of their calling is too much to bear in their own strength, therefore we pray earnestly, Father, send them help from your Holy Place, and be their tower of strength.

“Lord, graciously hear us.”

Boris Johnson was announced as the winner of the Conservative leadership contest on Tuesday, beating rival Jeremy Hunt to the post.

Theresa May will leave Downing Street on Wednesday to allow Mr Johnson to officially take-up the new role.
