Minister channels inner trekkie for Star Trek themed funeral

Rev Brian Casey channeled his inner Trekkie to conduct a funeral for Star Trek enthusiast Michael Hendry at Maryhill Crematorium on Friday.

The minister of Springburn Parish Church wore a yellow shirt with the iconic Starfleet delta insignia as he greeted mourners with the Vulcan salute hand gesture.

Rev Casey said: “Mikey had special needs and did not get out the house much and his life revolved round Star Trek.

“He watched it endlessly every day and owned everything you could imagine – clothing, posters, figurines, DVDS.

“So his family wanted a service that reflected his life in a positive way.

“I know some of the theology behind Star Trek and I thought it was an interesting challenge and an excellent way to mark the life of a man who warmed the hearts of his community.”

Mr Hendrey’s family were delighted by the personalised service the parish provided as some mourners wore Star Trek badges in tribute to Mikey’s love of science fiction.

Church Cancels Services 25 Minutes Before 85 MPH Winds Destroy Roof

Church Cancels Services 25 Minutes Before 85 MPH Winds Destroy Roof

A Texas pastor is crediting divine intervention for saving lives from a major storm that damaged his church’s building.

Highland Terrace Baptist Church in Greenville, Texas, was preparing to hold its mid-week service Wednesday night when pastor Chet Haney and his congregation decided to cancel. Half an hour later, much of the building was destroyed.

“It was a funny feeling, because about 5:30 [p.m.] everything was normal,” he told KTVT-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth. “Without hesitation, we all decided together: We better tell everybody to stay home. Thank the Lord we did, because in 25 minutes we didn’t have a church anymore in terms of the building.”

The National Weather Service says straight-line winds, not a tornado, slammed the region. Winds peaked at 85 mph.

The storm tore a hole into the roof of the worship center. Much of the roof caved in and was destroyed.

“It’s actually my granddaughter’s Sunday School room – it’s completely demolished. Something fell out of the sky and landed on top of it,” Haney said.

The Sunday School room, he told KXAS, would have been filled with children if services had been held.

Church member Wynema Payne had arrived early for choir practice.

“Within three seconds, we heard a loud boom and the roof here was taken off and deposited in that Sunday School class probably 30 feet from us,”…

Christian group gets 20,000 signatures against new Amazon TV show but sends to Netflix by mistake

They’re unhappy about the new Amazon series Good Omens which tells the story of an angel and a demon who are good friends.

The petition, which has been put together by the Christian group Return to Order, states: “This series presents devils and Satanists as normal and even good, where they merely have a different way of being, and mocks God’s wisdom.

“This is another step to make Satanism appear normal, light and acceptable. We must show our rejection.”

While huge numbers have voiced their objections, the petition was sent to the wrong television network.

Netflix received the complaint despite Amazon making the series.

Writing on Twitter, Netflix joked “ok we promise not to make any more”.

Return to Orders says it will rectify the mistake and make sure the petition now gets to Amazon.

Book Publishers Ask President Trump Not to Tax Bibles Made in China

Book Publishers Ask President Trump Not to Tax Bibles Made in China

Book publishers are asking President Donald Trump to reject a proposal for what many are calling a “Bible tax.”

According to CBN News, the proposed tariffs are on $300 billion of Chinese goods and include printed materials, such as Bibles and children’s books, which are made in China. The tariff is about 25 percent.

Bloomberg reports that those materials are printed in China because of “the unique paper, printing technology and skills needed.”

During a hearing this week, however, companies and trade groups that would be impacted by the proposed tariffs ask the U.S. International Trade Commission to reconsider the tariffs.

Mark Schoenwald, the chief executive officer of HarperCollins Christian Publishing, attended the hearing.

“We believe the administration was unaware of the potential negative impact these proposed tariffs would have on Bibles and that it never intended to impose ‘a Bible tax’ on consumers and religious organizations,” Schoenwald said.

He added that the tariff would impact the entire publishing market.

In response to the tariff, publishers would have to raise their prices. CBN News also said Christian booksellers, ministries and churches would face the new challenges.

“If tariffs are imposed, there will be fewer books available to American kids,” said Daniel Reynolds, CEO of Workman Publishing Co. in New York.

Judge gives doctors go-ahead to abort mentally-ill woman’s baby despite mother’s religious objections

Mrs Justice Lieven has concluded that a pregnancy termination is in the woman’s best interests after analysing evidence at a hearing in the Court of Protection, where issues relating to people who lack the mental capacity to make decisions are considered, in London.

Bosses at an NHS trust responsible for the woman’s care had asked Mrs Justice Lieven to let doctors perform an abortion.

Specialists said a pregnancy termination was the best option.

The woman’s mother, a former midwife, was against abortion because of her Catholic faith and said she could care for the child.

A social worker who works with the woman said the pregnancy should continue.

Lawyers who represented the woman also said she should be allowed to give birth.

But Mrs Justice Lieven said a balance of evidence showed that termination was the best option.

The judge said some evidence in the case was “heartbreaking”.

She heard that the woman, who is in her twenties and is 22 weeks pregnant, had the mental age of a child aged between six and nine.

Mrs Justice Lieven had considered the terms of the 1967 Abortion Act, which says termination may be performed up to the 24th week of pregnancy, and the 2005 Mental Capacity Act before reaching a decision.

She analysed the case at a public hearing but said the woman, who lives in the London area, cannot be identified in reports of the case.

The judge also said the…

Liberty University Lays Off a Dozen Divinity School Faculty Members

Liberty University Lays Off a Dozen Divinity School Faculty Members

A new report from Inside Higher Ed revealed this week that Liberty University has made the decision to cut several divinity school staff members.

According to CBN News, the Lynchburg, Virginia school has seen a steady decline in enrollment in their divinity school since 2015. Inside Higher Ed reports that the university’s online program has dropped from 19,727 students in 2015 to 13,688 students in 2017. The on-campus program has lost some traction as well, with the number of enrolled students dropping from 1,078 students in 2015 to 992 students in 2018.

Some have attributed the decline in enrollment to the school’s close relationship with President Donald Trump. According to Christianity Today, however, the school believes it is a result of the change in the times and the evolution of ministry.

“Really, it’s a sign of the times,” Liberty’s senior vice president for spiritual development and campus chaplain David Nasser told Christianity Today. “The landscape of the way churches are staffing is changing, the landscape of the way mission organizations are staffing is changing, and I think that’s why we’ve seen some decline in the school of divinity in that sense.”

The school has, however, seen an increase in graduate-level applications to the divinity school.

Liberty University administrators noted that they have seen that this generation of…

Evangelical Alliance raises concern about potential changes to Scotland’s gender transition laws

The proposed changes could reduce the period someone has to have lived in their new gender from two years to six months, with three of those as a cooling off period before the finalisation of the gender change.

The Scottish Government have committed to a further period of consultation though, before bringing the legislation to the Scottish Parliament.

In that consultation the proposals will also consider reducing the age requirement for gender change from 18 to 16.

The Evangelical Alliance, a body of Christians and churches across the UK, said: “The continued push to allow a child to self-identify is deeply concerning.

It added that it wanted “to encourage the church and wider society to respond with compassion to those wrestling with gender dysphoria; to seek clarity that is not based on ideology; and to create space for concerns around the rush to invasive procedures and safeguarding single-sex spaces.”

The alliance also said it was “encouraged that the government have listened to some of the concerns raised and will continue to engage with the proposals to be published in a draft bill”.

Kieran Turner, public policy officer for Evangelical Alliance Scotland, said: “Today’s announcement paints a mixed picture. We welcome the new consultation and the fact that the Scottish Government have recognised the need to reflect further in light of the many concerns…

Local Assembly Meeting in Alaska Opens with ‘Hail Satan’ Invocation

Local Assembly Meeting in Alaska Opens with ‘Hail Satan’ Invocation

A public meeting in Alaska began with an invocation that included the mantra “Hail Satan!” The invocation, given by a member of the Satanic Temple, led to walkouts from attendees and officials, as well as protests outside the meeting.

The incident took place at the Kenia Peninsula Borough Assembly meeting in southern Alaska. Iris Fontana, a member of the Satanic Temple, was the first member of a nontraditional religion to offer the invocation at the meeting after the Assembly was forced to change their policy about who could offer invocations.

In the invocation, she said, “Let us be present in this moment, clear our minds and be free of outdated propaganda and regulations that were created by historical people who were afraid of the unknown. Let us embrace the impulse to eat of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, so that we may let go of comforting delusions, and see the truth in the world. Let us demand that humans be judged for their actions, not their loyalty to useless social norms, labels, and categories. Let us stand firm against all authority that tries to threaten the unalienable rights of all humans. Let us cast aside our differences to use reason, logic, science, and compassion to create solutions for the greater good of our community. It is Done. Hail Satan. Thank you.”

According to the Anchorage Daily News, Fontana also offered an invocation…

It’s Time to Praise the Lord – Album Release by Sarai Korpacz

ALBUM Release:

Debut Album from Christian Musician Celebrates the Healing Power of Worship – and her Birthday

New York, NY – – – When Sarai Korpacz’s debut single is released this week, this talented singer-songwriter will not only share her soulful sound with a gospel-loving Christian music crowd, she will also share the story of her own reawakening. It’s Time to Praise the Lord is the celebratory result of a traumatic neck injury that led to a renewal of her faith.

The song, which will be released on YouTube, gives listeners a sneak peek of what’s to come when the full album is released on July 4th – which is fittingly, her birthday.Sarai Korpacz on The Christian Mail

“The overarching message of this song and my upcoming album is simple: worship God in spirit and in truth. When we do that, we draw closer to God and realize how real He is in our lives,” explained Korpacz. “Choosing my birth date as the release date is intentional as the album is the result of realizing my own newfound purpose in life.”

The realization of that purpose came to the recording artist following a painful injury last year. Prescribed medications were having a minimal effect on reducing the pain she was experiencing so she turned her attention to worshiping God by listening to various Christian musicians. While the pain did not completely go away, her newfound strength of spirit helped lessen it to a point where it was bearable. And spurred her to write and record her first album.

“I have always been a believer with a strong Christian faith, but the injury gave me a renewed awareness of the power of praise and worship. I hope to share my story, inspire people and give them an enjoyable listening experience in the best way I know how – through my music.

It’s Time to Praise the Lord will be available on CDbaby and distributed to numerous partners which include Apple iTunes, Amazon Music, and Google Music Store on July 4th. For more information about Sarai Korpacz and her new album, go to https://saraikorpacz.com
