Christianity is a faith with a long and detailed history, with numerous events of lasting significance occurring throughout the ages.

Each week brings the anniversaries of great milestones, horrid tragedies, amazing triumphs, and everything in between.

Here are three things that happened this week, Sept. 6-12, in Church history. They include the arrival of Spanish missionaries in Virginia, the ordination of the founder of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, and Latin American bishops issuing a justice statement.

Pastor Tony Evans, the longtime pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Texas, launched a new sermon series, titled “Kingdom Voting,” on Sunday, preaching on what God has to say to Christians about how to vote.

The pastor began his sermon acknowledging that a conversation on voting can easily become toxic, as people take sides and remain dedicated to their positions.

There’s divisiveness not only in the culture but also in the Church “that has facilitated disharmony, disunity and conflict in the broader society,” he said months ahead of the presidential election.

And that is due to a lack of proper Kingdom perspective when it comes to God’s activity in society,” the Dallas pastor noted. This is why “the Church has become as bad as, or worse than, the world, allowing ourselves to be a poor example of who God is and how God functions with regards to government.”

So how should a Christian vote?

“Until the Church gets it right, the culture can’t get it right,” he emphasized.

The Pasadena-based Harvest Rock Church and Harvest International Ministry have appealed their case regarding Gov. Gavin Newsom’s ban on all in-person worship, including home Bible studies and fellowship with anyone who does not live in the home.

On behalf of Harvest Rock Church and Harvest International Ministries, which is a nonprofit corporation with 162 member churches statewide and over 65,000 affiliates worldwide, the religious rights law group Liberty Counsel has filed a lawsuit in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

The lawsuit challenges “both the total ban on in-person worship (including in private homes) in the counties on the ‘County Monitoring List,’ and the ban on singing and chanting in the remaining counties,” Liberty Counsel said in a statement.

Harvest Rock Church also has many “Life Groups,” which are home Bible studies and fellowship groups. “These too are prohibited under Gov. Newsom’s July 6 (no singing and chanting) and July 13 (no worship) orders.”

Pastors John MacArthur and Andy Stanley, who are both influential Christian leaders, presented dueling advice on how churches should respond to government restrictions amid the pandemic this week, with MacArthur urging pastors to open because the supposed need for indefinite lockdowns is a “lie,” while Stanley recommended cooperation.

Both MacArthur, who leads Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, and Stanley, who leads North Point Community Church in Alpharetta, Georgia, shared their thoughts on the controversial issue during a Q Session discussion with moderator and Q Ideas founder Gabe Lyons on Wednesday.

MacArthur, who’s been locked in an ongoing public dispute with Los Angeles County over his decision to hold indoor Sunday morning worship services for his thousands of members, argued that while it’s “crystal clear that God has ordained government,” he will no longer aid and abet the “lie” of the ongoing lockdowns in response to COVID-19.

Vice President Pence on Thursday told a gathering of pro-lifers that the pro-life cause is “winning in America” and that the nation is on the cusp of restoring the “sanctity of life back to the center of American law.”

But Pence also warned the audience that Joe Biden, if elected, could reverse much of the pro-life advances made under the Trump administration.

“For those of us who cherish the extraordinary progress that we’ve made in this movement, the stakes have never been higher,” Pence said.

God, he said, is on the side of pro-lifers.

Pence made the comments at Christ Baptist Church in Raleigh, N.C., as part of the “Life Wins!” multi-state tour with the Susan B. Anthony List. Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the organization, interviewed Pence on stage during Thursday’s event.

“The Democratic Party has become the party of abortion on demand, late-term abortion, taxpayer funding of abortion,” Pence said. “And you even had a governor in the state of Virginia that actually openly defended infanticide on a radio broadcast. You had Democrats in the state legislature in the state of New York who were cheering at the passage of a bill that allowed for a baby to be aborted right up until the moment of birth. And then here in North Carolina, I know you actually had a governor that vetoed a bill that would outlaw late-term abortion.”
