Church Leaders give blessing to plastic free Easter Egg

The Meaningful Chocolate Company are well known for making chocolate products for Christian celebrations which highlight the Biblical narratives behind the festivals, such as making advent calendars that tell the gospel narrative of the Christmas story.

At Easter, their eggs include a 24 page copy of the story of Jesus’ last days, death and ascension.

This year, in response to a poll which found that 96% of Christians think it is important for easter eggs to be plastic free and news that 11.5 million tonnes of food packaging waste is produced every year, their packaging will go plastic free.

In November 2018 1,000 Christians responded to a Survey Monkey asking them to rate how important it was for the Easter eggs the were to buy in 2019 to be plastic free 3.3% said not important, 33.28% Important, 63.58% very important.

David Marshall from the Meaningful Chocolate Company, who make the Real Easter Egg, said: “Easter eggs don’t have to cost the earth. We have replaced plastic bags, tamper-seals and Best Before stickers with paper versions.

“There is still the same amount of chocolate in the Real Easter Egg and the box sizes are the same but the redesign means our Dark and Original Egg will save at least 5 tonnes of plastic and 175 tonnes of card in the next five years.”

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, said; “I am delighted that an Easter Egg, which…

Church of Scotland supports smacking ban legislation

The Children (Equal Protection from Assault) (Scotland) Bill was introduced by Scottish Green MSP John Finnie and is under consideration at the Scottish Parliament.

The Church of Scotland and a number of organisations across Scotland have vocalised their approval of the Bill.

It would create a law to abolish the defence of reasonable chastisement of a child.

Under current legislation, a person can claim that the physical punishment of a child is justifiable as a parental right or as a right of having charge or care of the child.

However, the court does also consider a number of factors such as the nature of the action and duration.

The Church of Scotland, the Scottish Youth Parliament, Social Work Scotland, Law Society of Scotland and a number of other organisations wrote submissions to Holyrood’s Equality and Human Rights Committee on Wednesday.

Expressing their support for the Bill, The Church of Scotland, in its submission, wrote: “The Church believes that the resort to violence should cease to be acceptable as our society comes to understand its negative impact.”

There has, however, been criticism of the proposals.

Police in Scotland suggested in their submission to the committee that the legislation could result in increased costs to the force as officers spend time probing allegations against parents.

Campaign group Be Reasonable Scotland – backed by The…

Pope demands bishops act now on abuse as victims speak of pain

Victims then told the bishops of the searing emotional pain of their abuse.

Francis opened the four-day summit by telling the Catholic hierarchy that their own responsibility to deal effectively with priests who rape and molest children weighed on the proceedings.

“Listen to the cry of the young, who want justice”, and seize the opportunity to “transform this evil into a chance for understanding and purification”, Francis told the 190 leaders of bishops conferences and religious orders.

“The holy people of God are watching and expect not just simple and obvious condemnations, but efficient and concrete measures to be established,” he warned.

More than 30 years after the scandal first erupted in Ireland and Australia and 20 years after it hit the US, bishops and Catholic officials in many parts of Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia still either deny that clergy sex abuse exists in their regions or downplay the problem.

Francis, the first Latin American pope, called the summit after he himself botched a well-known sex abuse cover-up case in Chile last year.

Realising he had erred, he has vowed to chart a new course and is bringing the rest of the church leadership along with him.

The summit is meant as a tutorial for church leaders to learn the importance of preventing sex abuse in their churches, tending to victims…

The Simple Power of Focusing on One Thing in a Revitalization

SUBSCRIBE TODAY: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio • Google Play

Focusing on one thing makes you make decisions on both what to do and what not to do. That often leads to greater results.

Some highlights from today’s episode:

  • Many church leaders do not feel like they are accomplishing something unless they are busy.
  • Church outreach programs and ministries need time to take root. They often produce long term results.
  • When our lives get complex, we tend to panic, get frustrated, or withdraw.
  • Small ministry wins in a church can create excitement and momentum for even bigger growth.

The six reasons that we discuss are:

  1. You have to begin somewhere
  2. Complexity leads to confusion and complacency
  3. Helps the heart and attitude of the leader
  4. The power of low-hanging fruit
  5. Makes you focus on what really matters
  6. Helps you to say no

Resources mentioned in this episode include:

Revitalize & Replant is sponsored by the North American Mission Board and ChurchReplanters.com. More than 10% of churches in North America are at risk of closing and the North American Mission Board is committed to reversing this trend by decreasing the death rate of existing churches while simultaneously increasing the birth rate of new churches. Pope Francis ‘smiles’ at $1m request for him to go vegan for Lent

The Million Dollar Vegan campaign – run by a couple from York, offered the pontiff a donation of $1m (£771,405) for the charity of his choice if he avoids all animal products for 40 days.

The face of the campaign is twelve-year-old American animal rights and environmental campaigner Genesis Butler.

She travelled to Vatican City this week to put more pressure on Pope Francis to ditch his normal eating habits during the religious observance.

The Million Dollar Vegan campaign said in a statement: “Pope Francis is considering Genesis’s plea to go vegan for Lent.

“Today Genesis attended a general audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican, following an earlier meeting inside the Vatican yesterday with senior Catholic priest Fr Pawe Ptasznik.

“It was at this meeting that Genesis spoke with such integrity and passion about her love for animals and how we need to change our behaviour to protect them and the planet that we live on.

“Father Ptasznik responded ‘we are all responsible for our Earth, I agree with your words’. And he agreed to be her messenger, and to take her letter, signed by dozens of celebrities, scientists and influencers, as well as the petition signed by tens of thousands of people, and hand it to Pope Francis.

“Father Ptasznik asked for Genesis’s home address and told her to await a response from the Pope.

“During today’s general audience, Pope Francis…

One of the most moving articles I’ve ever read

Michael Gerson was President George W. Bush’s chief speechwriter and senior policy advisor and is now a nationally syndicated columnist with the Washington Post. It was my privilege to meet him and to work together at a recent Dallas Baptist University event.

He has been named one of the “25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America” and is one of the most popular and respected conservative voices in American culture.

He also suffers from clinical depression.

Gerson preached last Sunday at Washington National Cathedral. His sermon was adapted into a Washington Post article titled “I was hospitalized for depression. Faith helped me remember how to live.” It is one of the most moving and illuminating articles I have ever read.

If you have time, I encourage you to stop and read it before continuing with this Daily Article. If you do not, I hope you’ll read it as soon as you can.

“Despair can grow inside you like a tumor.”

Gerson describes his disease: “The brain experiences a chemical imbalance and wraps a narrative around it. So the lack of serotonin, in the mind’s alchemy, becomes something like, ‘Everybody hates me.’ Over time, despair can grow inside you like a tumor.”

There are times when the body is incapable of healing without medical intervention. God calls medical professionals just as he calls pastors and missionaries. Faith is a key part of the solution, but depression and other clinical conditions require clinical responses as well.

That’s why Gerson offers this crucial advice: “I’d urge anyone with undiagnosed depression to seek out professional help. There is no way to will yourself out of this disease, any more than to will yourself out of tuberculosis.”

However, as he adds, “Those who hold to the wild hope of a living God” find help and grace in him.

I found myself wondering, are there resources the God of Scripture offers that no other source can?

Help for the past

Much of the despair of life comes…

11-Year-Old Arrested after Argument Erupts Following His Refusal to Stand for the Pledge of Allegiance

11-Year-Old Arrested after Argument Erupts Following His Refusal to Stand for the Pledge of Allegiance

Earlier this month, an 11-year-old student was arrested after an argument erupted over his refusal to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

The sixth-grader from Florida faces charges after being arrested for “causing a disruption and refusing repeated instructions from the school staff and law enforcement,” USA Today reported on the statement released by Polk County Public Schools.

A spokesperson for the county schools, Kyle Kennedy, said in the statement that “the student was NOT arrested for refusing to participate in the pledge,” making it clear that “students are not required to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance.”

The disturbance began with an argument between the student and a substitute teacher when the boy refused to stand for the pledge, calling the flag “racist,” and saying the national anthem was offensive to African Americans, reported Bay News 9.

The statement reported that the teacher, identified as Ana Alvarez, asked the boy why he shouldn’t move somewhere else to live if it was “so bad here.” Alvarez said he replied, “They brought me here.”

Alvarez answered the student, “Well, you can always go back because I came here from Cuba and the day I feel I’m not welcome here anymore, I would find another place to live.”

The teacher then called on the office to…

Protest demands freedom of ‘courageous’ girl held a slave for refusing to denounce faith

The protest was organised outside the Nigeria High Commission by Christian campaigners, exactly one year since Leah Sharibu’s disappearance in the north-eastern town of Dapchi.

Chief executive of Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), Mervyn Thomas said: “Leah Sharibu has now been in the hands of [a] violent sect for 365 days and we are deeply concerned by the lack of government action to secure her release.”

The 15-year-old was among 110 schoolgirls abducted from their classrooms on 19th February 2018. Leah was the only Christian among the group.

Leah’s classmates were subsequently released, following negotiations involving the Nigerian government.

Aid to the Church in Need

But the teenager remained in captivity for refusing to renounce her Christian faith – an explicit precondition of her release.

Mervyn Thomas from CSW added: “We continue to call on the government of Nigeria to do everything in its power to expedite the release of this courageous schoolgirl…”

Leah is being held by Islamic State West Africa Province – a faction of the jihadist group Boko Haram which is aligned with Islamic State.

The extremists have been waging an insurgency against the Nigerian government in the north of the country since 2009.

Mr Thomas added: “We also call on the…

New Evidence Suggests Empire Star Jussie Smollett Staged Attack by Alleged Trump Supporters

New Evidence Suggests Empire Star Jussie Smollett Staged Attack by Alleged Trump Supporters

After allegedly being attacked last month by two men who yelled “this is MAGA country,” investigators have obtained new information to suggest that “Empire” star Jussie Smollett staged his attack.

According to ABC News, Smollett – an openly gay, African American actor – was allegedly attacked in Chicago by two men who yelled derogatory slurs at him as they wrapped a noose around his neck and covered him in bleach.

Police arrested two Nigerian brothers, Ola and Abel Osundario, in relation to the attack and according to CBS 2, the men – who were deemed main suspects – were released within days without charges.

Reportedly, the brothers provided police with information that “shifted the trajectory” of the case.

According to a source for CBS 2, the brothers revealed to police that Smollett paid them $3,500 to attack him. The source told CBS 2 that the brothers, one of whom CBS News reports is Smollett’s personal trainer, were able to confirm certain details of the attack and offer some possible insight on other parts of the assault. Reportedly, one brother wrapped the rope around Smollett’s neck as he poured bleach on him while the other brother – adorn with a plain red baseball hat – yelled homophobic and racist slurs at the Empire star.

The source also said that the brothers told police detectives that they…
