Zimbabwe churches try to broker national dialogue

A bloody security crackdown on protesters last month has added to the instability in the African nation.

A national dialogue prayer breakfast was held in the capital Harare on Thursday.

Rev Dr Kenneth Mtata, general secretary of the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) attended and told Premier he left feeling hopeful.

Speaking during the News Hour, he said: “I think we have come out of a very difficult time but there is a sense that the nation seeks to converge in a direction that is solution orientated.”

The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum has claimed that the death toll following an army crackdown in the country has risen to 17.

State security forces launched the crackdown after protests erupted on 17th January, which were sparked by protests against President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s announcement of massive fuel hikes.

The breakfast was organised by various church bodies including the ZCC, the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference, the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe and the Union for the Development of Apostolic Churches in Zimbabwe Africa.

Rev Dr Kenneth wrote on Twitter: “We had dialogue in 1979, and a new Zimbabwe was born. We had dialogue in 1987, and had the Unity Accord. Had dialogue in 2009, and got a government of national unity. We had a wide engagement in 2013, and got a new constitution.

Our Daily Bread 8 February 2019 Devotional – Love and Peace

Topic: Love and Peace [Our Daily Bread 8 February 2019 Devotional]

Bible in a Year: Leviticus 4–5; Matthew 24:29–51

You will not abandon me to the realm of the dead. . . . You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence. – Psalm 16:10–11

Today’s Scripture & Insight: Psalm 16:1-11

It always amazes me the way peace—powerful, unexplainable peace (Philippians 4:7)—can somehow fill our hearts even in our deepest grief. I experienced this most recently at my father’s memorial service. As a long line of sympathetic acquaintances passed by offering their condolences, I was relieved to see a good high school friend. Without a word, he simply wrapped me in a long bear hug. His quiet understanding flooded me with the first feelings of peace within grief that difficult day, a powerful reminder that I wasn’t as alone as I felt.

As David describes in Psalm 16, the kind of peace and joy God brings into our lives isn’t caused by a choice to stoically stomp down the pain during hard times; it’s more like a gift we can’t help but experience when we take refuge in our good God (vv. 1–2).

We could respond to the aching pain that death brings by distracting ourselves, perhaps thinking that turning to these other “gods” will keep the pain at bay. But sooner or later we’ll find that efforts to avoid our pain only bring deeper pain (v. 4).

Or we could turn to God, trusting that even when we don’t understand, the life He’s already given us—even in its pain—is still beautiful and good (vv. 6–8). And we can surrender to His loving arms that tenderly carry us through our pain into a peace and joy that even death can never quench (v. 11).

Today’s Reflection
Father, thank You for the way Your tender touch embraces and holds us in our times of joy and pain. Help us to turn in trust to You for healing.

Sen. Ted Cruz Fires Back at Sen. Cory Booker for Asking Judicial Nominee if LGBT Relationship Were ‘Sin’

Sen. Ted Cruz Fires Back at Sen. Cory Booker for Asking Judicial Nominee if LGBT Relationship Were ‘Sin’

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) condemned Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) for interrogating a judicial nominee about her moral and religious principles during a confirmation hearing this week.

As Christian Headlines previously reported, Senator Booker first asked nominee Neomi Rao is she believed LGBT relationships were “immoral.”

Rao questioned the relevancy of the question before answering no.

Booker followed up by asking Rao if she believed homosexuality was a ‘sin.’

The administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs answered, “Senator, my personal views on any of these subjects are things that I would put to one side and I would faithfully follow [the precedence of the Supreme Court].”

Directly following this display, Senator Cruz defended Rao before the committee noting that he was “deeply troubled” by the attack on Rao’s personal religious views.

Cruz said, “The Senate Judiciary Committee should not be a theater for mischaracterizing or twisting a nominee’s views nor an avenue for persecution.”

He continued, “We’ve seen a growing pattern among Senate Democrats of hostility to religious faith. I was deeply troubled a few minutes ago to hear questioning of a nominee asking your personal views on what is sinful. In my view that has no business in this committee. Article VI of the…

Joanna Gaines Opens up about How Social Media Started Robbing Her Joy

Joanna Gaines Opens up about How Social Media Started Robbing Her Joy

Do all those picture perfect moments on social media ever leave you feeling like your own life isn’t good enough? Well, you’re not alone. Joanna Gaines talks social media in the Spring 2019 issue of The Magnolia Journal. And she admits to battling the same feelings of insecurity as the rest of us!

Social media can be a great way to keep up with friends and family. But you have to be careful. It can also start to impact your real life in some not-so-healthy ways. And that’s true for all of us, even former “Fixer Upper” star Joanna Gaines.

Before HGTV launched Chip and Joanna Gaines into the spotlight, Joanna didn’t put much thought into her social media presence.

“It wasn’t so very long ago that I had only a handful of followers on Instagram,” Joanna recalled in The Magnolia Journal. “There wasn’t any pressure to post anything at all, so whenever I did, it didn’t really cross my mind whether or not people would ‘like’ it.”

But after hitting official “celeb” status, suddenly Joanna’s posts were under a new level of scrutiny. She now has millions of followers. So even the most innocent post can sometimes bring an unexpected onslaught of criticism. Like the time a simple photo of Baby Crew at the doctor brought on a huge vaccination debate (read about it HERE).

Suddenly, Joanna found herself becoming more preoccupied with what and…

Rhapsody of Realities 8 February 2019 – The Blotting Out Of Our Transgressions

Rhapsody of Realities 8 February 2019 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome – The Blotting Out Of Our Transgressions

Topic: The Blotting Out Of Our Transgressions

In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace (Ephesians 1:7).

In many places where the word “forgiveness” is used, it should actually be translated “remission.” Remission means liberty, release, separation; it means letting the offence or offences go as though they never existed. Your error is treated as though it never happened; totally separated from you, and separated from your history. Can you imagine that?

Someone might wonder, “How can that be?” But that’s what we read in our opening verse; God did it according to the riches of His grace. That means God has the capacity to completely separate a man from his sins as though he never committed any sin, by virtue of the blood of Jesus Christ! That’s not forgiveness. Forgiveness is to pardon. In forgiveness, you’re released from punishment, even though the record remains that you were an offender.

Growing up as a young Christian, we were taught certain things that weren’t quite accurate. One of such teachings was that the sinner gets remission, while the Christian gets forgiveness. That is, when you’re born again, your sins are remitted, but afterwards, if you do anything wrong, you receive forgiveness.

But think about it: if the sinner gets remission and his sins are completely wiped out, never to be remembered, why is the Christian having his own sins on record? The Christian shouldn’t be getting something lesser than what the sinner got. What we have in Christ is remission of sins.

What then happens when you do something wrong? You’re automatically cleansed by the Blood of Jesus: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Hallelujah!

PRAYER
Thank you blessed Father, for your loving-kindness. You provided for the remission of sins for your children. I pray, therefore, that Christians all around the world would come to this knowledge and refuse to be held bound by the accusations of the enemy, as they walk in your grace and in your righteousness, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Donald Trump and Nancy Pelosi attend National Prayer Breakfast

The annual gathering brought together members of the president’s Cabinet and members of Congress, including Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Among those delivering readings was the Most Rev Michael Curry, who made headlines around the world with his stirring sermon about the power of love at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The speech came after President Trump this week offered a fierce denunciation of late-term abortions in his annual State of the Union address, as he moved to re-energise evangelical voters who have been among his most loyal supporters and who will be vital in heading off any possible 2020 primary challenge.

Gary Haugen, of the International Justice Mission, spoke about a “fracturing of the American family” and described a “weary spirit of discouragement” in the country.

“For our American family, I do sense that we are in a national moment of perilously mounting discouragement,” he said.

“Our tribal divisions, our institutional dysfunctions, our desperate winner-take-all contests of cultural resistance or survival, they seem to be pressing in our chests with a swelling anxiety of national disintegration.”

He pointed to issues including criminal justice reform and combating the opioids epidemic as areas in which the country could come together.

“Even in this divided era, there is good that we all agree should be done,” he…

Revered theologian Dr Michael Green dies

Dr Green, who was a distinguished lecturer in evangelism and apologetics at Wycliffe Hall, passed away at a hospital in Oxford, surrounded by members of his family.

In a statement, the Bible college said: “It is with great sadness that I pass on the news that Michael Green went to be with the Lord yesterday at around 3pm at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

“His passing was peaceful and he was surrounded by Rosemary and his immediate family.”

Dr Michael (pictured with his wife Rosemary) had previously advised the Archbishops of Canterbury and York during the 1990s for the Springboard Decade of Evangelism – which encouraged people to spread the gospel.

In a statement posted on his website, the evangelist Canon J.John described Dr Michael as a “profoundly wise man” who had a “hunger for God”.

He added: “He loved sharing the faith and had a remarkable enthusiasm for evangelism that age did not dim.

Choosing Relocation as a Revitalization Alternative

SUBSCRIBE TODAY: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio • Google Play

Relocation is often considered a magic bullet for revitalization. Today, we discuss why it’s not the case and what to consider then making the decision to relocate.

Today’s Listener Question from Carter:

The church I pastor needs revitalization. We are in an economically depressed area and many of our members drive in. Would it be better for us to explore relocation vs. trying to grow where we currently are?

Some highlights from today’s episode:

  • Relocation in revitalization should be the exception, not the norm.
  • The cost of relocation is often high and not all the costs will appear on a balance sheet.
  • When a church moves locations, the DNA of the church is often altered.
  • In oder to better reach your community, you need to know the demographics and psychographics of the community.

The seven points that we discuss are:

  1. It is usually not a good first choice
  2. Are there groups in the community that would use the facility more effectively?
  3. Know the costs of relocation
  4. Understand where your current members live
  5. The “DNA transplant” problem
  6. Know the details of the new location’s demographics
  7. Get help!

Resources mentioned in this episode include:

Revitalize & Replant is sponsored by the North American Mission Board and ChurchReplanters.com. More than 10% of churches in North America are at risk of closing and the North American Mission Board is committed to reversing this trend by decreasing the death rate of…
