‘Faith is not a leap into the unknown, but an evidence-based commitment’, claims Oxford professor

The Northern Ireland-born Christian thinker and speaker was debating as part of an recorded conversation released today with high profile atheist and Florida State professor of philosophy of science, Michael Ruse (pictured below, left).

Lennox said: “Faith is part and parcel of my life as an intellectual and a scientist.

“I believe in the theory of gravitational attraction, why? Because I have evidence for it.

“I believe my wife loves me, why? Because I have evidence for it.

“And, my Christian faith consists, not in faith as a leap into the unknown, it is evidencebased commitment – otherwise, I wouldn’t be remotely interested in Christianity.”

The debate, which has been released as part of The Big Conversation series, was recorded in front of a live audience at the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in London and hosted by Premier Christian Radio presenter, Justin Brierley (pictured below, centre).

It pitched Lennox, who has authored books such as ‘God’s Undertaker: Has science buried God?’ and ‘Gunning for God: Why the New Atheists are missing the target’ against Ruse, who although an atheist himself has nevertheless been critical of the New Atheist movement represented by figures such as Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris, believing that a better conversation between faith and science is possible.

In response to Lennox’s claims, Michael Ruse replied: “If I am taught,…

Church of England numbers at record low, survey finds

Since 2002, the proportion of Britons who identify as Church of England has more than halved, falling from 31 per cent to 14 per cent.

The sharpest decline happened among 45 to 54-year-olds – 35 per cent in 2002 compared with eleven per cent in 2017, according to data from the National Centre for Social Research’s (NatCen) British social attitudes survey.

The proportion of people who describe themselves as Roman Catholic (eight per cent) belonging to “other Christian affiliations” (ten per cent) and “of non-Christian faiths” (eight per cent) have remained fairly stable.

Fifty two per cent of people now say they have no religion, compared with 41% in 2002, and men are more inclined to say they follow no religion than women (57 per cent compared with 48 per cent), the survey found.

Seventy per cent of those aged 18-24 say they have no religion – an increase from 56 per cent in 2002, while two per cent of this group view themselves as Anglicans, down from nine per cent in 2002.

The number of Scots who say they belong to the Church of Scotland has fallen overall, from 31 per cent in 2002 to 18 per cent in 2017.

Roger Harding, head of public attitudes at the NatCen, said: “Our figures show an unrelenting decline in Church of England and Church of Scotland numbers.

“This is especially true for young people, where less than one in 20 now belong to their established church.

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 7 September 2018 Devotional — God-Given Desires

Topic: God-Given Desires [Joyce Meyer’s Devotional Friday September 7, 2018]

Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and petitions of your heart. — Psalm 37:4 (AMP)

One of the ways God speaks to us is through the sanctified desires of our hearts. God places right desires in our hearts and then He gives us those desires.

I remember a time when I had a desire for homemade zucchini bread but had no talent or time to make it. I simply said, “Lord, I sure would like some fresh zucchini bread,” and did not think about it again. About a week later a lady who knew nothing of my desire handed me a box and when I opened it, I found homemade zucchini bread. God delights in doing small and large things for us and we should never fail to appreciate all of them.

We need to ask God to give us sanctified, or holy, desires. We usually have desire for natural things such as success, finances, nice homes, and good relationships, but we should also desire spiritual things. We should desire to know God in a deeper and more intimate way, to always display the fruit of the Spirit, especially love, to serve God in ways that glorify Him, to always be obedient to God, et cetera. Let us ask God to take away fleshly desire and give us sanctified desire.

God puts in us desires that will bring His righteousness, peace, and joy to our lives (see Romans 14:17), and they never disagree with His Word. Wrong desires torment us, and we are impatient about receiving them, but sanctified desire comes with a willingness to wait on God’s ways and timing. Place your desires before God, pray about them and trust God to give them to you if and when they are right for you.

Prayer Starter: Father, help me to want what You want. I lift up all my desires to You right now and ask for You to give me what’s best for my life—in Your way and in Your timing. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional 7 September 2018 – Help From God

TOPIC: Help from God (Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministries Friday, 7 September 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Isaiah 50:7-9

MEMORY VERSE: “Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.” – Psalm 38:22

The MESSAGE:

The business of the enemy is to launch unceasing attacks against the children of God in order to destabilise them and make them lose faith, trust and confidence in God. Jesus said the agenda of the enemy is to steal, to kill, and to destroy, but the business of our Lord is to give us abundant life (John 10:10), peace, and love unlimited. God, fully aware of the business of the enemy, gave assurances of His continual help for us in times of trouble. You must trust God and exercise your faith and confidence in Him when the attacks from the devil come against you like a flood. Isaiah 41:10-20 provides definite assurance of God’s help. Don’t ever allow yourself to be intimidated by the enemy. God is with you to strengthen you and uphold you with His mighty hand. All your enemies shall scatter unto desolation and those who wage war against you will be as nothing. God will convert you into a threshing sledge, new and sharp, with many teeth to thresh the mountains and crush them, and reduce the hills to chaff, which wind will blow away.

Rejoice in the Lord and glory in the Holy One of Israel who is able to provide all your needs. As you cry to the Lord today and pour your heart to Him, He will answer you. He has promised to make rivers flow on barren heights and springs within the valleys. He will turn the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into springs. He will perform great signs and wonders in your life so that people may see and know that the hand of the Lord has turned around your situation and given you beauty for ashes. Make this powerful confession today: “God is my refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore I will not fear nor be intimidated, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea. Though its roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling. There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High. God is fully in charge of my situation and I shall not be moved. God shall help me just at the break of dawn. He shall make me divinely preferred above all my colleagues and those who hate me.”

God shall raise a voice for you to defend you and silence all opposing voices for your sake. You shall surely be victorious, for the LORD of hosts will take over your battle. He will fight for you and you shall hold your peace. The LORD of hosts will fight for you; the God of Jacob will be your refuge. He will make wars over your destiny cease to the end of the earth; He will break the bow and cut the spears of your enemies it two. He will burn their chariots in the fire and strip them of their armour. Be unmovable in the knowledge that the LORD is your God and His name will be exalted in the earth!

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
GOD IS FULLY IN CHARGE OF YOUR SITUATION, AND YOU SHALL NOT BE MOVED.

PROPHETIC WORD:
God shall help you just at the break of dawn.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING
1. O God my Father, send help unto me, in the name of Jesus.
2. Fear of the unknown, I bind and cast you out of my life, in the name of Jesus.
3. Voices from the grave, speaking failure into my life, be silenced by the blood of Jesus, in the name of Jesus.

EVENING
4. I arise by fire, out of the grave of hopelessness, in the name of Jesus.
5. I receive the power to put my enemies to open shame, in the name of Jesus.
6. I am a victor and not a victim, by the power in the blood of Jesus, in the name of Jesus.
7. Blood of Jesus, Holy Ghost fire, pursue my pursuers, in the name of Jesus.

Kenneth & Gloria Copeland 7 September 2018 – Strike It Rich

Topic: Strike It Rich [Kenneth & Gloria Copeland 7 September 2018 Daily Devotional]

And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. – Galatians 3:29

One of the problems that hung around me for years was poverty. But I remember the day I decided I wasn’t going to be poor anymore. I was reading in the Word where it says that the blessing of Abraham has come upon the gentiles by Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:14). Then I got down to the 29th verse where it says, “If ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Suddenly the truth hit me. I got so excited I could hardly stand myself.

I turned back over to Deuteronomy 28 and—line by line—I read those promised blessings. “Blessed in the city, blessed in the country. Blessed going out, blessed coming in. Blessed in your barns, blessed in your fields, blessed in all the works of your hands.” Man, I had struck it rich!

I’d been going to school in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and I was living in a dumpy little house no one would want to live in. But when I read those promises in the Word, I saw the light. I realized God had already redeemed me from the curse of poverty.

Well, that afternoon in my back bedroom, I took my Bible in my hand and I said: “I want to announce to Almighty God in heaven and to Jesus Christ of Nazareth, to all the angels of heaven, to all the demons of hell, and to anyone else who cares anything about hearing it, that from this day forward my needs are met according to God’s riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

I told God, “I’m standing on Your Word, and I’m looking to You to take care of me. I’ll never ask a man for a dollar.”

That was many years ago and I never have. You know why? Because that decision connected me to the power of God. It’ll do the same for you.

Our Daily Bread 7 September 2018 Devotional – Unchanging Love

Topic: Unchanging Love [Our Daily Bread 7 September 2018 Devotional]

Read: Psalm 103:13–22, Bible in a Year: Proverbs 1–2; 1 Corinthians 16

The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. 1 John 2:17

When I was in high school I played on the varsity tennis team. I spent many hours of my teenage years trying to improve my skills on four concrete courts located just two blocks from my home.

The last time I visited that city, one of the first things I did was drive to the tennis courts, hoping to watch others play and reminisce for a moment. But the old courts, so familiar to my memory, were nowhere to be seen. In their place was a vacant field, inhabited only by an occasional weed waving silently in the breeze.

That afternoon remains in my mind as a stark reminder of the brevity of life. One of the places where I expended some of my best youthful strength no longer existed! Reflecting on that experience later brought me to this truth, expressed by an aging King David: “The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him” (Psalm 103:15–17).

We grow older and the world around us may change, but God’s love doesn’t. He can always be trusted to take care of those who turn to Him.

Prayer: Faithful Father, thank You for Your love that never changes! Help me to love You by serving You faithfully today.

In our changing world, we can always depend on our unchanging God.

TREM 7 September 2018 Daily Devotional – God’s Unconditional Love

Topic: God’s Unconditional Love [TREM 7 September 2018 Daily Devotional]

“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not”. – 1 John 3:1 (KJV)

One major challenge of today’s church folks is the inability to know, accept, and indeed become intimate with the truth of God’s unconditional love. You need to understand that God’s love for us is Agape love. That is love regardless of what you have done. Agape love is that kind of love that requires nothing from man. It is love that reaches out even when you are undeserving.

We see the display of His Agape love first in redemption. Romans 5:6-8 clearly tells us about His love in redemption: “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly: for scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.’’

God did not wait for us to know Him. We didn’t come crawling on our knees, but rather He paid the price even when we had not come to terms with the fact that we were on the wrong side of the law.

Secondly, we see His love displayed in forgiveness. Do you remember the story of the prodigal son? The boy asked his father to give him his inheritance and he collected it and left the house, to a far country where he squandered it all. Rather than shut the door against the boy for wasting his resources, the father was every day expecting the safe arrival of his son. When the boy eventually returned home, the father ran to him while he was yet afar off. He quickly made available a robe that fitted the young man, shoes his size, a ring for his hand and even much more. His father threw a lavish party to welcome him back home. That is love in action; God’s unconditional love.

8 Dead and 40 Missing after 6.7 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Japan

8 Dead and 40 Missing after 6.7 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Japan

A powerful 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck Japan early Thursday morning. The quake struck the northern island of Hokkaido and triggered landslides throughout.

According to BBC News, at least eight people have reportedly been killed and around 40 are missing. Additionally, the quake damaged a thermal power plant leaving about three million homes without power.

The tremor struck around 3:00 am and its epicenter was about 62km (39 miles) south-east of the regional capital Sapporo.

Many took to social media to voice their experience. One Twitter user said, “Scary wake up call this morning. Was woken up by my phone blaring “earthquake” just moments before my apartment started shaking. #北海道地震#hokkaido #japan #earthquake”

Another Twitter user said, “My friends. We just had a major #earthquakehere in Japan. #Hokkaido. #Sapporo. We are in the dark, but otherwise fine. Omg! It was humongous. No information on magnitude. Internet still works for now.”

College Bans Christian Student’s ‘Jesus Loves You’ Valentines, So She Sues

College Bans Christian Student’s ‘Jesus Loves You’ Valentines, So She Sues

A college student who was prevented from handing out Bible verse-themed Valentines on her campus is suing the school in federal court, alleging the current policy is unconstitutional and violated her free speech rights.

Polly Olsen, a 29-year-old student at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, designed red heart-shaped Valentines for Valentine’s Day with various messages, the lawsuit says. Among them: “You are special! 1 John 4:11,” “God is love 1 John 4:11,” “Jesus loves you! Romans 5:8,” and “You are loved and cared for! 1 Peter 5:7.”

She went to campus in a red dress this year on Valentine’s Day and handed out the Valentines to students and staff members but was stopped by a security officer, who told her she was violating campus policy and taking part in a “suspicious activity,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. The violation: sharing unwanted, potentially offensive messages.

Olsen was told she could hand out the Valentines at a designated public forum area – a small area of the campus for those who are picketing, displaying signs or distributing literature.

The campus policy, the lawsuit says, is “over-broad and vague.”

“There is nothing under Wisconsin law or the rules of [the college] which would make handing out Valentine’s Day cards with Bible references illegal or constitute ‘suspicious…
