Has Site of Jesus’ First Miracle Been Uncovered?

A biblical archaeologist believes he has found the site where Jesus turned water into wine – and it’s not in the location where Christians have long thought it was.

The northern Israel town of Kafr Kanna – located a few miles northeast of Nazareth – is the traditional site of the New Testament town of Cana, where John 2 records Jesus as performing his first miracle and changing water into wine at a wedding.

But Tom McCollough, professor of religion at Centre College in Danville, Ky., says he has found evidence that the location of Cana actually is modern-day Khirbet Qana, a village that is a few miles north of Kafr Kanna.

McCollough wrote about the find in an edition of Biblical Archaeology Review. He and others found tunnels at Khirbet Qana that were used for Christian worship and had been marked with crosses and other references to the faith, according to The Daily Star.

Villages like Kafr Kanna have been thought to be the site, but “none has the ensemble of evidence that makes such a persuasive case for Khirbet Qana,” he said, according to the newspaper.

Christians centuries ago, he said, apparently came to the location because they believed it is where Jesus performed the miracle.

“We have uncovered a large Christian veneration cave complex that was used by Christian pilgrims who came to venerate the water-to-wine miracle. This complex was…

John Piper Reveals How to ‘Fight Demonic Temptations to Discouragement’ and Preserve Joy

(Screenshot: TheGospelCoalition.org)Theologian John Piper speaks during the MLK50 Conference in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 2018.

Reformed theologian John Piper has shared practical tips for fighting the “demonic temptations to discouragement” and preserving joy in God throughout the day.

In an episode of the podcast “Ask Pastor John” that was posted to DesiringGod.com on Labor Day, a listener named Katie asked Piper to identify the little things she could do throughout her day to find and preserve her joy in God.

Piper, who is also the chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary in Minneapolis, Minnesota, first pointed out that if Christ is not our supreme satisfaction, something else will be — and as a result, we will be drawn away from the Christian faith.

“Our flesh and the devil are active all day long to draw us into pleasures that are anti-God,” he explained. “If we have no strategies for awakening and cultivating and preserving and intensifying our joy in God, we will be drawn away by our flesh and the devil into alternative pleasures, which are, as Paul said, idolatry (Colossians 3:5).”

Yet, killing evil desires isn’t enough, Piper contended, as doing so leaves us with an “empty soul.” Instead, Christians need to train their minds to recall Scripture…

2 Dead & Airport Flooded After Strong Typhoon Hits Western Japan – Urban Christian News

A powerful typhoon slammed into western Japan on Tuesday, causing heavy rain to flood the region’s main international airport and strong winds to blow a tanker into a bridge, disrupting land and air travel and leaving thousands stranded. The storm left at least two people dead.

Jebi, reportedly the strongest typhoon to make landfall in Japan since 1993, headed north across the main island of Honshu toward the Sea of Japan. It was off the northern coast of Fukui on Tuesday evening with sustained winds of 126 kilometers per hour (78 miles per hour) and gusts up to 180 kph (110 mph), the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

A man in his 70s died apparently after being blown to the ground from his apartment in Osaka prefecture, while a 71-year-old man died when a storage building collapsed on him, officials said.

NHK public television said 126 people were injured.

High seas poured into Kansai International Airport, built on artificial islands in Osaka Bay, flooding one of its two runways, cargo storage and other facilities, and forcing it to shut down, said the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. A passenger was slightly injured by shards from a window shattered by the storm.

A 2,591-ton tanker that was mooring slammed into the side of a bridge connecting the airport to the mainland, damaging the bridge and making it unusable, leaving about 3,000 passengers stranded at the airport, transport ministry official Mitsuo Nakao said.

The tanker was also damaged, but its 11 crewmembers were not injured and remained on board, according to the coast guard.

More than 700…

People Who Use Dating App Tinder While in a Relationship More Likely to Be Psychopaths: Study

REUTERS/Mike Blake/IllustrationThe dating app Tinder is shown on an Apple iPhone in this photo illustration taken February 10, 2016.

Using Tinder while in a committed relationship is linked to psychopathy, a new study reveals.

According to recent research published in the journal of Computers in Human Behavior, people who use the dating app Tinder despite being in a committed relationship tend to be more psychopathic, PsyPost reported Monday. The study is titled “Why are you cheating on tinder? Exploring users’ motives and (dark) personality traits.”

“We noticed that several academic studies on dating apps consistently reported that a subsample of their participants were in a committed relationship while using Tinder or another dating app (in between 18 and 25% to be precise),” said Elisabeth Timmermans of Erasmus University-Rotterdam, who co-authored the study.

“We thought this was quite surprising, as dating apps — or hookup apps — are mostly aimed at attracting singles. Therefore, we were mainly interested in why people in a committed relationship would use Tinder and whether these motives differed from single Tinder users.”

Nearly 1,500 Tinder users were surveyed in the research, and were asked about their experiences with the dating app and what motivated them to use it. Over 300 of these participants reported using the app despite being in a committed relationship, and over half of the Tinder users who were in a relationship reported they had used the app to meet someone. The responses varied significantly depending on whether or not the user was single or partnered.

Indian Christians Refuse to Deny Christ Despite Persecution From Hindu Radicals

(Photo: Reuters/Jayanta Shaw)School children listen to a speech by a Christian leader during a protest rally in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata August 29, 2008.

Christian families in India who were forced to stop attending church after Hindu radicals threatened to beat and kill them have vowed to continue worshiping Christ in secret.

Pastor Singh, who leads a congregation in India’s Madhya Pradesh State, told International Christian Concern that 15 families have stopped going to his church in recent months after facing persecution at the hands of Hindu radicals.

“The reason for this drop in the attendance is the threats from Hindu radicals,” Pastor Singh told the nonprofit persecution watchdog. “The radicals say they will beat and kill my church members if they continue to attend the services.”

“Prior to May this year, around 200 people used to worship regularly in my church,” he continued. “But now only 50 to 60 people attend my church on Sunday. They are under tremendous pressure from Hindu radicals.”

Shankar Damor, a 37-year-old from Kardubadi village near Jhabua, told ICC his family stopped attending church because they were under serious threat of physical attack.

“In a meeting last May in the village of Kardubadi, the Christians were told that we should not attend…

Backers of Election Security Bill Say Delay Helps Russia – Urban Christian News

Just two months before the midterm elections, bipartisan legislation to try to prevent foreign hacking into U.S. election systems is stalled in Congress as the White House and some Republicans worry it could exert too much federal control over the states.

Supporters of the bill say the delay could embolden Russia, which targeted election infrastructure in at least 21 states in 2016.

A committee vote on the bipartisan bill was abruptly canceled two weeks ago after objections from some Republican senators and the states they represent. And Republicans and Democrats who are supporting the bill say they don’t know when — or if — it will be taken up again in the few remaining weeks Congress is in session before the midterms.

The delay has some concerned that Congress could punt on the only piece of legislation that is designed to fix what went wrong in 2016 — and to prevent Russia or other countries from trying again. There is no evidence that the Russian targeting of state election systems was successful or changed any votes, but lawmakers, intelligence officials and elections experts say that they believe Russia will return in 2018 and beyond with more sophisticated tools.

It also demonstrates Congress’ struggle to develop a cohesive response to the Russian interference — especially as President Donald Trump has at times questioned whether it even happened.

The White House issued a lukewarm statement on the election security bill, neither endorsing nor opposing it but saying that “if Congress should choose to continue to pursue” the legislation they want to ensure…

Tennessee Pastor Cussing in Sermons Gains Millions of Views Online

Tennessee Pastor Cussing in Sermons Gains Millions of Views Online

A Memphis pastor who uses profanity in his sermons says he doesn’t believe the way he uses the words is swearing. Pastor Thaddeus Matthews of the Naked Truth Liberation and Empowerment Ministries in Memphis, Tennessee, told The Christian Post Thursday, “there is a difference in ‘cussing’ and ‘cursing’ as people say. The words that we use today like motherf****r, sh*t, da*n, were not words that were used in biblical times.”

The pastor continues, “So I don’t have an issue with the cussing. And the people that listen to me don’t have an issue with the cussing, and I’m not trying to justify it to the traditional churchgoer.”

Matthews’ sermons, which have titles that are adorned with profane words, have gained millions of views online. The pastor says he really doesn’t “give a da*n” what traditional Christians think of his practice.

In an interview with The Christian Post Mathews said, “I find no reason to try to justify that. I’m a fisher of men. I go to people on their level. And you have to get past the cussing to get the message. The cussing has drawn the attention of millions around the country.”

“The cussing pastor,” as Matthews calls himself, had a longtime career as a controversial broadcaster in Memphis before starting his ministry about three years ago.

“I’m a controversial figure in Memphis,” the pastor started, “I’ve been in broadcast for nearly…

Egyptian Teen Embraces Christianity After Muslims Murder Father Who Refused to Convert

(PHOTO: OPEN DOORS)When 17-year-old Marqos heard about how his father, Baghat, had refused to deny Christ in the face of extreme danger, his heart began to change.

An Egyptian teen embraced Christianity after witnessing the faith of his father, who was brutally murdered by Muslim extremists for refusing to convert to Islam.

Seventeen-year-old Marqos told persecution watchdog Open Doors USA that just a few years ago, his family lived at peace with their Muslim neighbors in El-Arish, a small city on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. Marquos’ father, Baghat, was a veterinarian who had good relations with his Muslim colleagues and friends.

However, everything changed when Palestinian immigrants with a very strict view on Islam moved to the village. Marqos’ mother, Fawziya, recounted how the Muslims began threatening believers by spreading leaflets warning Christians to leave the city or die. In the beginning of 2017, they began to carry out their threats.

One Sunday morning, Baghat woke up early to go to church, and then went to work at the veterinarian clinic of one of his Muslim friends. While Marqos and Fawziya weren’t present at the tragedy that followed, Marqos spoke with a Muslim friend of his father who witnessed the event.

“He told me that two young masked men entered the…

French President Names 2 New Ministers for Sports and Environment – Urban Christian News

French President Emmanuel Macron picked a political ally and a former swimming world champion to plug two holes in his government left by the unexpected resignations of the environment and sports ministers.

The presidential Elysee Palace announced the mini-reshuffle in a brief statement Tuesday.

Francois de Rugy, president of the National Assembly, parliament’s lower house, takes over at the ecology ministry. He replaces Nicolas Hulot, a high-profile and popular green campaigner who quit last week, lamenting that not enough is being done against environmental destruction.

The new sports minister, Roxana Maracineanu, was a backstroke world champion in 1998 and an Olympic silver medalist in 2000. She replaces Laura Flessel, a double Olympic gold medalist in fencing, who cited “personal reasons” for her unexpected resignation on Tuesday.

French online investigative site Mediapart and weekly newspaper Le Canard Enchaine reported Tuesday that Flessel is in trouble with the tax authorities for alleged issues regarding the company handling her image rights as a former athlete.

Her entourage said her resignation wasn’t related to tax issues, according to Mediapart.

De Rugy will see oversee energy and transport policies as part of his environment brief. As such, he will be one of the public faces of Macron’s efforts to position France as a champion in the fight against climate change and as a counterweight to the environmental policies of President Donald Trump.

The loss of Hulot, who quit out of the blue last week during a live radio interview, deprived Macron of one of his most…

Churches urged to set up school uniform banks for struggling families

It comes as schools in England reopen after the long summer holiday.

Several congregations have already started projects which pass on shirts and jumpers to youngsters from disadvantaged homes – but it’s claimed more are needed.

Chell Parish in Stoke on Trent runs a school uniform bank in partnership with Tesco and has already helped 75 youngsters.

The church’s vicar, Chris Coupe, told Premier’s News Hour the church-led scheme saves mums and dads from embarrassment.

He explained: “There’s been 175 school uniforms given out and that’s an increase of almost 28 per cent on the year. The need is still growing.”

The project runs throughout the year but there is a big push during the summer to provide uniform before the new term of school begins.

Rev Coupe said more churches should start the simple and discreet service.

Sharing parent’s and children’s appreciation for the donations, he explained: “For them it’s a sense of relief, they’re pleased; they know that their child or children are going to be going to school dressed looking like every other child. Not in uniform that’s tattered or torn or outgrown or with no uniform at all. But rather they can go in with uniform that looks right – it fits.

“And their child just blends in with every other child – which is what the parents want and the children want – they don’t want to be different to their peers.”

Stay up to date with…
