Two New Lawsuits Seek to Stop Discrimination Against Religious Schools

Two New Lawsuits Seek to Stop Discrimination Against Religious Schools

An educational choice advocacy group is supporting two lawsuits in Washington and Maine, arguing that laws in the states unconstitutionally discriminate against religious school and other faith-based organizations regarding public funding.

The Institute for Justice’s lawsuits comes after the Supreme Court’s ruling in 2017 that decided a Missouri church should not be barred from secular aid programs.

In Maine, the organization is advocating for three families that filed a legal challenge against a policy of prohibiting religious schools from the state’s school choice program.

In many parts of Maine, the cities aren’t large enough to be zoned for public high schools, so the state offers families money to be spent on their schools of choice, including both private and public schools.

Under the law, however, families cannot use the money to send their children to religious schools.

“By prohibiting tuition payments for children whose parents choose to send them to sectarian schools, it forces parents to either forgo the benefit of tuition funds for their child or forgo their right to send their child to the school of their choice,” the lawsuit filed with the U.S. District Court of Maine states. “Defendant has no compelling, substantial, or even legitimate interest in denying tuition-eligible students and their parents sectarian options while allowing private…

Excitement building ahead of Pope Francis’ visit to Ireland

The last time a pope visited Ireland was 1979.

Evana Boyle from the group Catholic Comment, which is based in Ireland, has been taking part in festivities this week with The World Meeting of Families.

The event, which aims to strengthen the bonds between families, held an opening ceremony on Tuesday with 39,000 people in attendance leading up to the pope’s visit.

Boyle told Premier News Hour there is a lot of excitement.

“It is just full of enthusiasm and excitement and celebration of faith which is really lovely to see,” she said.

There will be many speakers and seminars at events across the capital and the highlight will be the Pope taking part in a session.

As part of it, the Festival of Families is choreographed as a celebration of family life in music, dance, and spoken word.

Pope Francis will join an audience of 82,500 in the Croke Park sports stadium where he will hear testimonies from families and see performers like Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.

Boyle said the visit comes at a very important time as allegations of sexual abuse by members of the Catholic institutions and clerics have begun to emerge from the late 1980s.

“This is a real boost for Catholics in Ireland because this is a difficult time as we all know,” she said.

“I hope this will be a shot in the arm for the Church to renew a hurting Church, and to just help us solider on in a very secular society…

Black Pastors Meet with President Trump to Discuss Prison Reform

Black Pastors Meet with President Trump to Discuss Prison Reform

In early August, President Donald Trump invited a group of pastors to the White House to discuss prison and criminal justice reform. Trump sat at the table with a group of African American pastors for the meeting he called “President Trump Meets with Inner City Pastors.”

Among the pastors who attended the meeting was South Carolina pastor John Gray of the Relentless Church.

Gray opened the meeting in prayer saying, “God, we thank you for an opportunity to speak about the hearts of those who sometimes cannot fight for themselves.”

Gray continued, “We thank you for this moment to be able to share our hearts with the president. Dr. King said, ‘We cannot influence a table that we are not seated at,’ so we pray that this conversation will be fruitful and productive and honoring of the best traditions of this nation.”

According to Christianity Today, the pastors in attendance received mixed feelings from the press, their communities and congregations. While Fox 10 Phoenix described footage of Gray’s prayer as “POWERFUL,” a black ministers coalition described it as heartbreaking in an open letter to the pastors who attended the meeting.

In the letter the coalition of 50 ministers wrote, “We need not remind you of the posture of the Prince of Peace, our Savior from the streets, when He stood before Herod and Pilate. He didn’t even pray for…

Why is Pope Francis visiting Ireland?

It has taken place every three years since Pope John Paul II established it in 1994 to strengthen the bonds between families and bear witness to the “crucial importance” of marriage and the family.

There will be many speakers and seminars at events across the capital and the highlight will be the Pope taking part in a session.

As part of it, the Festival of Families is choreographed as a celebration of family life in music song, dance, and spoken word.

Pope Francis will join an audience of 82,500 in the Croke Park sports stadium where he will hear testimonies from families and see performers like Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.

What else is the Pope going to be doing on Saturday?

He will visit Irish President Michael D Higgins at his home in the Phoenix Park then see Taoiseach Leo Varadkar at Dublin Castle for a meeting lasting around 15 minutes.

The subject of his conversation with Mr Varadkar has been the subject of speculation, including whether the Irish premier will raise the clerical sex abuse scandal which has rocked the Catholic church.

The Pope is also expected to visit St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral.

He will undertake a private trip to a day centre for homeless families.

Why is he going to Knock shrine on Sunday?

Francis is following in the footsteps of his predecessor John Paul II, who visited the shrine in 1979, a century after an apparition was said to have…

Former KKK Member and Neo-Nazi Denounces Hate Groups One Year After Charlottesville Rally

Former KKK Member and Neo-Nazi Denounces Hate Groups One Year After Charlottesville Rally

Ken Parker, a former Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan, attended the Charlottesville, Virginia, rally last year to “stand up for [his] white race.”

Parker, who was both a KKK Grand Dragon and an American Neo-Nazi, might have describe himself as being filled with hate a year ago, but since the rally in Charlottesville, Parker has completely reformed and found a new faith in Jesus Christ.

NBC News reports that Parker was one of the hundreds of white nationalists who gathered around the Robert E. Lee statue in the city’s Emancipation Park for a “Unite the Right” Rally. The rally turned into a riot and left one dead, injuring several others.

Parker told NBC News the protest “was thinly veiled as an effort to save our monuments, to save our heritage.”

He continued, “We knew when we went in there that it was gonna turn into a racially heated situation, and it wasn’t going to work out good for either side.”

After the rally was broken up by law enforcement and declared an unlawful assembly, Parker and other members of the KKK reportedly dispersed. This was when Parker met filmmaker Deeyah Khan, who was making a documentary on hate groups.

Parker told NBC News “She was completely respectful to me and my fiancée the whole time. And so that kind of got me thinking: She’s a really nice lady. Just because she’s got darker skin and believes in a…

Pope Francis visiting a changed Ireland

More than 90 per cent of people were Catholic, now it is down to less than 80%.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) said a dramatic fall in the birth rate has been accompanied by an increase in the proportion of children born outside wedlock.

The marriage rate has dropped and more are opting for civil rather than church ceremonies.

More have taken advantage of education opportunities.

Living standards for some have soared, Dublin is among the most expensive cities in Europe due to price inflation in housing, but the problem of homelessness has worsened in recent years.

In 1979, 2.7 million people turned out to greet John Paul II and heard him warn of the danger of growing materialism and secularism in a changing world.

Those phenomena have continued apace, in common with much of Western Europe.

Maynooth College, where aspiring clerics study, was once one of the world’s busiest and helped send Irish missionaries around the world to spread the faith.

The number studying for the priesthood has reduced substantially over recent decades, with the average age of a priest around 70.

Social values have also changed, demonstrated by a series of popular votes for liberalisation, which passed despite religious opposition.

In 1995 Ireland decided by referendum to allow divorce.

Subsequent history has disproved contemporaneous claims that it would lead to husbands deserting their…

Surprise: World’s Most Committed Christians Are in Africa, Latin America… and the U.S., Survey Finds

Surprise: World’s Most Committed Christians Are in Africa, Latin America… and the U.S., Survey Finds

The world’s most committed Christians reside mostly in Africa, Latin America and the United States – the latter being an outlier among wealthy nations, according to a new Pew Research Center report.

Pew examined 84 countries with large Christian populations and asked self-identified Christians a series of questions to gauge their commitment to their faith. In 35 of those countries, “at least two-thirds of all Christians say religion is very important in their lives,” Pew reported Aug. 22. Among those 35, all but three countries reside in Africa or Latin America. The three exceptions are the United States, the Philippines and Malaysia.

The data reflects the “broader pattern of Christianity’s ‘march southward’ from wealthy countries to developing ones,” the Pew report said.

The U.S., though, is an “outlier” among wealthy countries in its commitment among self-identified Christians, with 68 percent saying religion is very important in their lives. Among European countries, it’s:

  • Greece, 58 percent.

  • Spain, 30 percent.

  • Italy, 23 percent.

  • France, 12 percent.

  • Germany, 12 percent.

  • United Kingdom, 11 percent.

Ethiopia has the world’s most committed Christians, according to Pew, with 98 percent saying their faith is very important. In the Philippines, it’s 91…

Churchgoer appointed new Australia Prime Minister

The 50-year-old overcame Peter Dutton, who was the key challenger to incumbent PM Malcolm Turnbull, to win a leadership ballot by 45 votes to 40.

He is expected to be sworn in by Governor-General Peter Cosgrove after Mr Turnbull officially resigns.

Born in Sydney in 1968, Mr Morrison has been Australia’s treasurer – the equivalent of the UK’s Chancellor – since September 2015.

He was first elected as an MP in 2007 when he won the seat of Cook, located in the southern suburbs of Sydney.

Known to be a regular churchgoer, after last year’s referendum on same-sex marriage, he would back a new “religious protections” bill to support churches who didn’t want to offer gay weddings.

InterVarsity Launches ‘2030 Calling’ to Plant Christian Fellowships at 2,500 US Colleges

(Photo: InterVarsity)Students participate in an InterVarsity Christian Fellowship Bible study on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison.

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship has launched a “2030 Calling” — an initiative to bring Christian fellowships to all major college campuses in the United States in the next 12 years.

As students across the country are returning to campuses this fall, the inter-denominational, evangelical Christian campus ministry announced its new initiative on Monday to bring Christian ministries to all 2,500 U.S. college campuses that have over 1,000 students by the year 2030.

According to the ministry, about 53 percent of those 2,500 schools do not have a known campus ministry presence.

“Our deep conviction is that every student at every university and every faculty member at every university deserves an opportunity to hear the Gospel in a compelling, passionate and personal way from somebody that they know,” Greg Jao, Intervarsity director of external relations and senior assistant to InterVarsity President Tom Lin, told The Christian Post. “The best way to do that is to make sure that there is a campus fellowship at every one of those places.”

Jao explained that the 2030 Calling is strategic because “today’s college students represent the…

$120 million cannot buy happiness

Tim Cook will become $120 million richer today when he receives 560,000 shares of Apple stock. But he should beware: prosperity is no guarantee of happiness.

Writing in the New York Times, Jonathan Rauch notes: “Real per capita income has more than tripled since the late 1950s, but the percentage of people saying they are very happy has, if anything, slightly declined.”

Why?

A Harvard study tracked a group of men for close to eighty years. The bottom line: loving relationships are the key to happiness and health. It was not money or status but strong interpersonal relationships that led to the greatest life satisfaction.

This news should not surprise Christians. We know that we are made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27) and that our Creator is relational by nature. He relates to himself as Father, Son, and Spirit. And “God is love” (1 John 4:8), an attribute that requires someone to love.

Here’s the question: With whom should we most seek a loving relationship as the key to happiness? The answer may surprise you.

A personal confession

I was led to faith in Christ through a bus ministry. A church in my Houston, Texas, neighborhood enlisted volunteers to knock on doors, inviting people to ride their bus to church. In August 1973, they knocked on my apartment door. My brother and I came to Jesus as a result.

I will be eternally grateful for evangelical churches that emphasize evangelism and practical ministry. But I was active in church life for years before I began realizing that Jesus wanted to be more than my Savior and Lord–he wants to be my friend. He wants an intimate, personal, loving, daily relationship with me. He wants to be a “friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24).

How is it possible to have such a relationship with the Son of God?

The fact is, you and I can know Jesus better than we can know anyone else. Here are three reasons this miraculous statement is true.

One: Jesus loves us unconditionally.

Our…
