Christian prison worker welcomes £10m funding for jails

The prisons minister has pledged to resign if his campaign to tackle violence and drugs in struggling jails doesn’t succeed.

The Conservative Rory Stewart announced £10m to go towards scanners for drugs as well as to improve facilities.

Speaking about these proposals, Gerard Chrispin from the Christian Prison Resources Ministries, who go into jails and do Bible studies, told Premier he is aware that violence goes on:

“I get to know prisoners very well and I know what’s going on in the jails and I also speak to officers and sometimes you see people who ‘slip down the stairs’, they say – well they must be very slippery stairs at times – and I do know that drugs are a real problem for people.”

“Anything that can help to reduce those [problems] must be good but you won’t blitz it out by money alone – I think only the gospel can do that to people’s lives.”

“It’s easy to criticise politicians, especially in prison, but they have a real hard job and anything they can do, in any way, to make it easier is good news. The ultimate answer is that people need to put their trust in Christ.”

Speaking of the poor conditions in prisons he said: “It varies from prison to prison,

“You go round some of the older prisons, the London prisons, and obviously it does need money spending on it. But it needs a lot of money, I hope £10m is enough. It does need smartening up and cleaning up and…

Trump Cabinet Meeting Begins with Prayer by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

Trump Cabinet Meeting Begins with Prayer by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

In a move that sparked division on social media, President Trump opened his cabinet meeting Thursday by asking Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to pray.

Pompeo said he was using a “Cadet Prayer” booklet from his days at West Point.

“O God, our Father, Thou Searcher of men’s hearts, help us to draw near to Thee in sincerity and truth. May our religion be filled with gladness and may our worship of Thee be natural,” Pompeo prayed. “Strengthen and increase our admiration for honest dealing and clean thinking, and suffer not our hatred of hypocrisy and pretense ever to diminish. Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong, and never be to content with a half truth when the whole can be won.”

“Endow us with courage that is born of loyalty to all that is noble and worthy, that scorns to compromise with vice and injustice and knows no fear when truth and right are in jeopardy,” Pompeo said. “Help us to maintain the honor of the United States untarnished and unsullied and to show forth in our lives the ideals of America in doing our duty to Thee and to our nation. All of which we ask in the name of the Great Friend and Master of man. Amen.”

C-SPAN posted the prayer on Twitter. Some applauded it.

“God bless this country!” one person wrote.

Others, though, said it was out of place.

“Is it a religious meeting?…

Huge drop in number of pupils studying A level Religious Studies

A total of 18,422 entries were recorded in 2018.

Despite the drop, the number is still up by 65 per cent on the number of entries in 2003.

Those working within religious education say they’re concerned by the declining numbers at a time where community cohesion is needed more than ever.

The decline is being attributed to schools and government not prioritising the subject.

Ben Wood, Chair of the National Association of Teachers of RE (NATRE), said: “It is very disappointing to see that the number of entries has dropped by over 20 per cent.

“This devastating fall has been expected given successive policy decisions that have failed to maintain and support the position of RS as part of a broad and balanced curriculum.”

Rudolf Eliott Lockhart, Chief Executive of the Religious Education Council of England and Wales (REC): “At a time when our increasingly diverse society makes high quality religious education more important than ever, it is deeply concerning to see such a dramatic fall in the number of Religious Studies A level entries.”

American Biking Couple Seeking to Prove “Humans Are Kind” Is Killed by ISIS Group

American Biking Couple Seeking to Prove “Humans Are Kind” Is Killed by ISIS Group

The Pluralist reports that a young American couple was killed in last month in Tajikistan by Islamic-State terrorists.

According to The Pluralist, CBS News reported, Austin and Geoghegan, who were on a world bike trip, tragically lost their lives on July 29 when they, along with two other bicyclists – one from Switzerland and the other from the Netherlands – were hit by a car and then stabbed to death.

Jay Austin and Lauren Geoghean, both 29, were embarking on a world bicycle trip when they decided to bike in an area that The Pluralist reported, has high volumes of terrorist activity.

The idealistic couple quit their desk jobs last year in pursuit of adventure and to help other people plan their own adventures.

Austin said on his and Geoghean’s joint blog, “I’ve grown tired of spending the best hours of my day in front of a glowing rectangle, of coloring the best years of my life in swaths of grey and beige,” Austin continued saying, “I’ve missed too many sunsets while my back was turned. Too many thunderstorms went unwatched, too many gentle breezes unnoticed.”

After writing this, the couple prepared to go abroad and began documenting their trip on their Instagram accounts and their blog. The adventure seeking couple voiced that they wanted to bike this route to show that people are not evil as the “narrative”…

Mourners ‘say a little prayer’ outside Aretha Franklin’s father’s church

Since the singer – often referred to as the Queen of Soul – died following a battle with pancreatic cancer, tributes from fans have been made all over the world, including at places where the legendary singer performed.

Flowers and memorabilia have been placed at her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and dozens of people danced and sang her hits outside Harlem’s Apollo Theatre in New York on Thursday night.

Tributes have continued to flood in from stars including Dolly Parton, Sir Elton John and Oprah Winfrey.

Evangelist Franklin Graham tweeted: “She began singing Gospel music as a child at her church in Detroit where her father was a pastor. Our prayers are with her family.

“Aretha Franklin once said, ‘Being a singer is a natural gift. It means I’m using to the highest degree possible the gift that God gave me to use’.”

US presidents have also been paying tribute to Franklin.

Barack Obama – whose inauguration she sang at – described her as “divine and unmatched”, while Donald Trump said her voice was a gift from God.

Civil rights campaigner Reverend Al Sharpton says she was the soundtrack of the movement.

Franklin’s death was confirmed by her long-time publicist, Gwendolyn Quinn, on behalf of her family, who said she died “surrounded by family and loved ones”.

Franklin’s ex-husband, Glynn Turman, has said the singer was…

Catholics and Lawmakers Respond to Sex Abuse Report

Catholics and Lawmakers Respond to Sex Abuse Report

(RNS) — When Pennsylvania officials unveiled a report this week detailing accusations that Catholic priests had sexually abused more than 1,000 children since the 1940s and that church officials shielded the abusers, the public outcry was swift. Some compared the document to The Boston Globe’s 2002 “Spotlight” investigation, which unearthed comparably horrifying allegations in Massachusetts.

But two days after the report’s release, questions remain as to what effect, if any, it will have on American Catholicism or whether it will impact how states prosecute clergy sexual abuse in the future.

The Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit priest and editor at large at America Magazine, predicted fallout from the revelations could be as far-reaching as what followed the Spotlight stories.

“We can already see the convulsive effect it has had on the church in this country,” he told RNS by email. “People are nauseated, and that includes people far from Pennsylvania. … People are more disgusted than they were in 2002, if that’s possible.”

Catholics are already expressing dismay. Alice Niles, who lives near Philadelphia, said she called her parish and altered her contributions to the church after reading the report. She said she still supports her parish but wants to find a way to prevent her funds from being used by church authorities to protect predators.

“I’m really afraid…

‘Basic teachings of church will give them what they’re looking for’, letter reveals thoughts of John Lennon’s aunt on Beatles’ spirituality

Mimi Smith, who brought up Lennon as a child in Liverpool, wrote: “I don’t understand why they need an Indian, or India to meditate. That can be done here without any fuss. The basic teachings of their church will give them all they seem to be looking for.”

Her reply was part of her regular correspondence with prolific letter writer Eileen Read and was sent on September 7 1967 – less than a fortnight after the death of the Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein.

The band had taken a keen interest in the teachings of the Maharishi, the founder of the transcendental meditation movement, and had joined him at a conference in Bangor, North Wales, in August 1967, along with Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones and his then girlfriend Marianne Faithfull.

After listening to a lecture on the form of silent mantra meditation, the Beatles held a press conference at the venue in which they renounced the use of drugs.

They cut short their stay when the death was announced of Mr Epstein, aged 32, at his London home following an overdose of sleeping pills.

Both topics were covered in Mrs Smith’s letter which goes on sale at auction in Liverpool next weekend.

She wrote: “I haven’t seen John. The sad loss of Brian has upset them greatly & altered their plans. He will be sorely missed as a good friend and advisor to them. It was a great shock…

‘Staggering’ that Pope may not meet abuse victims, say protest organsier

Colm O’Gorman said: “It is staggering on the part of the Vatican, they can’t even be bothered to go through the motions of making it appear that this matters to them.

“It’s become a trope, he goes to a country and has a confidential meeting and releases a statement about how moved he was by victim testimony, expresses sorrow and regret and we move on.

“I’m not sure that meeting would’ve had any value anyway, but the idea that it’s an afterthought, that is utterly unacceptable.”

Mr O’Gorman was repeatedly raped by a local priest in Co Wexford for three years, beginning just a year after Pope John Paul II’s visit to Ireland in 1979, when he was 13.

He said: “When I heard Pope John Paul’s quote: ‘Young people of Ireland, I love you’, it sickened me, he didn’t.

“It’s important that all that has happened here over decades isn’t just swept aside of convenience of the Vatican.

“I respect people’s desire to have faith, I would never deny people their opportunity to profess their faith, but it cannot be at the cost of people all over the country struggling with the hurt and the trauma the church has caused.”

The event, to be held in the Garden of Remembrance on Sunday August 26 at 3pm, invites anyone who has been hurt by the church, and those who support them, to attend.

“The response I have had has been extraordinary, so many people have come to me to tell me their stories,…

Torrential rainfall may have led to a freak accident on Tuesday. An overpass collapsed in Genoa, Italy, leaving at least thirty-eight people dead and fifteen injured. Dozens of vehicles were cast toward the ground as part of the accident, and hundreds of emergency workers and firefighters are still searching for survivors within the rubble.

In the midst of such unpredictable tragedy, we turn to stories like that of Gianluca Ardini, who claims a miraculous escape from the accident after a blast of air threw him out from under the falling wreckage. Rescuers were able to bring him down from the bridge via ropes. His companion, tragically, had already fallen to his death.

The world’s response to tragedy

It is this one-in-forty survival story that allows emergency responders to still “speak of not giving up hope, although they accept there is very little chance anyone will now be found alive.” It is this attitude of hopefulness that we must strive to maintain as believers who live in a fallen world.

Just this week, forty-eight were killed in the suicide bombing of an education center in Kabul, Afghanistan. Many were teenagers preparing for another semester of university. At the same time, at least seventy-three were killed by heavy monsoon rains in the Indian state of Kerala.

How is it that God calls us to live amid such tragedy?

The world’s response to tragedy is hopelessness. Over seventy people were arrested on Tuesday…

BA worker who won cross necklace case accuses airline bosses of mistreatment

Nadia Eweida won a claim of religious discrimination against BA in the European Court of Human Rights in 2013 after being sent home for wearing a silver cross around her neck.

She had been locked in the highly publicised legal dispute since falling foul of a new employee clothing policy in 2006 – a case that ignited debate, but was rejected by the British courts.

The airport check-in worker, who still works for BA, alleges the publicity singled her out for mistreatment when she returned to her role in 2007.

In a new employment tribunal claim, airline managers are accused of victimisation, harassment and punishing the 67-year-old for whistleblowing.

It is alleged they treated her rudely and harshly in the wake of the furore.

Among the reported episodes was an incident in March 2017 when Ms Eweida was denied a break after experiencing strain on her eyes in the wake of an operation.

She was instead told to cover a flight gate – and given a written warning by management when she refused to do so.

A further uniform policy introduced in July 2017 required female staff to tuck their cravat in their blouse, meaning Ms Eweida had to wear her crucifix on top of her cravat – a move she claimed was designed to affect her.

She hopes to win compensation, a declaration and recommendations from her claim, which is due before Watford Tribunal Hearing Centre on October 26 for a…
