Christian Contestant Given Second Chance on ‘America’s Got Talent,’ Advances

An America’s Got Talent contestant, who attends a Christian college, advanced to the next round, Tuesday, after changing songs mid-performance and getting a verbal scolding from judge Simon Cowell.

Joseph O’Brien, who studies worship and pastoral studies at Boyce College in Louisville, Ky., walked to the piano and began singing REO Speedwagon’s “Can’t Fight This Feeling” when Cowell raised his hand and told him to stop. O’Brien’s voice wasn’t as strong in the song as in his previous performance.

“You’ve got to stop this song. I’m sorry,” Cowell said.

O’Brien said his “heart was beating” and he “just wasn’t getting in the vibe.”

“I think you’re overthinking everything right now,” Cowell responded. “You have a great voice. I’m just frustrated because I didn’t like that song choice.”

O’Brien then offered: “Would it be OK if I did an original, or would that be a bad idea?”

Surprisingly, the judges allowed a re-do – a rarity on the talent show.

O’Brien crushed his original song, which was faith-based.

In the show’s final moments, Simon and the other judges allowed O’Brien to advance to the next round – the “live shows” — in Hollywood. Fewer than half of the contestants Tuesday survived.

“You’ve got a lot of work to do, young man,” Cowell told him. “But you…

Ice Age, End of Human Civilization, Great Commission Approaching: Christian Astrophysicist Hugh Ross

(Photo: Reasons to Believe)Dr. Hugh Ross, founder and president of Reasons to Believe.

The next ice age, followed by the end of human civilization, and before that the fulfillment of Jesus Christ’s Great Commission, could be coming sooner than some suspect, Hugh Ross, a Christian astrophysicist and Old Earth creationist, has said in a recent series on his Reasons to Believe website.

In part three of his series, “The End of Civilization As We Know It?” Ross wrote on Monday that humans can only delay, but not prevent the next ice age.

While he did not offer a specific date, Ross analyzed ice age cycles, and said that humans need to realize just how favorable the conditions they live in now are compared to conditions on the planet in the past, and those coming in the future.

Ice age cycles are caused by variations in Earth’s tilt on its axis and the shape of Earth’s orbit around the sun, Ross said, and due to these, the next ice age should’ve started 5,000 years ago. But human activity, such as the additional atmospheric carbon caused by the domestication of cows and deforestation, caused global warming effects that mitigated the cooling effects.

The additional increase in atmospheric carbon caused by the burning of fossil fuels since the Industrial Revolution has…

Indonesia Passes Anti-terrorism Law After Suicide Attacks On Churches That Left 13 Dead – Urban Christian News

Officers inspect the site of an attack outside a church in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, on May 13, 2018. Suicide bombers targeted services at three churches in the country’s second-largest city, killing 14 people and wounding dozens in one of the worst attacks on the country’s Christian minority, police said. (AP Photo/Trisnadi)

Weeks after a radicalized Muslim family committed suicide attacks on churches in the city of Surabaya, Indonesia, the country passed an anti-terror law meant to prevent more attacks and foster the majority-Muslim country’s tolerant culture.

The May 13 attack, which killed 13 churchgoers and a security officer and took place days before the start of Ramadan, was the deadliest terrorist attack in Indonesia since a 2002 bombing in Bali. Then, the target was foreign tourists. This time it was Indonesian Christians, a minority who make up about 10 percent of the population, according to the 2010 census. Many feared that the attacks were a sign that the country’s religious diversity is under threat.

“Indonesia prides itself on its tradition of moderation, but intolerance is growing in a way that is making some fear for their hard-won democracy,” said Sidney Jones, director of the Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict, based in Jakarta.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo — a moderate Muslim who campaigned for the presidency with an image of a clean, populist politician — responded swiftly to the attacks, vowing a tough crackdown on terrorists. Key to that was his strong call for the passing of an anti-terror law.

“President Widodo promoted…

Christian group issues warning on IVF anniversary

Wednesday marked the 40th birthday of the world’s first IVF baby, Louise Brown.

Philippa Taylor, head of public policy at CMF, said that 40 years later IVF treatment has not solved the “heartbreak of infertility”.

“While the IVF industry and media focus on and market the success stories, the average delivery rate from ART treatments [assisted reproductive technology] are around just 19 per cent per cycle.

“In the UK, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority reports a ‘success’ rate of 26.5 per cent. This ‘success’ rate actually means that 73.5 per cent of cycles do not lead to a birth”, she wrote.

Taylor also warned that too many women are being duped by stories of celebrities in their 50s who with the help of IVF find it relatively quick and easy to conceive.

She said: “Success rates for IVF diminish rapidly after 35 years of age for women. Even a woman under 35 years has less than a one in three chance of having a baby per embryo transferred, using her own eggs and partner’s sperm.

“A woman in her early 40s only has about a one in ten chance of having a baby per embryo transferred. And the success rate drops to a mere two per cent for women over 44.”

Taylor highlighted the “troubling aspects of the fertility industry” citing babies born with health challenges and the use of medically unproven techniques.

“IVF can provide couples with a child they desperately…

Woman Complains About Man in Locker Room, Gets Kicked Out Of Fitness Club

Woman Complains About Man in Locker Room, Gets Kicked Out Of Fitness Club

A Florida woman had her membership in a fitness club revoked after complaining about a man using the women’s locker room, a religious liberty organization says.

Liberty Counsel alleges that Planet Fitness in Leesburg, Fla., terminated the membership of a “Mrs. H.” after a man, Jordan “Ivy” Rice, invaded her privacy in the locker room.

“This is not the only incident with Mr. Rice known to Planet Fitness,” a letter to Planet Fitness read. “Another woman reported that he exposed his naked body to her in the woman’s locker room at this location. In another instance, he was involved in an argument with another woman over use of the tanning room.”

Liberty Counsel said “misogynist, anti-woman harassment should have no place in Planet Fitness locations, and violates Florida law.”

The woman is the survivor of an attempted rape, the letter said, and is “keenly aware of and sensitive to men” being in places “where they do not have a legitimate purpose, and where she and other women are in a position of vulnerability.”

“Planet Fitness must immediately reinstate Mrs. H’s membership, and make changes to its membership and locker room policies to prevent blatant sex-based harassment by males in the women’s lockers and restrooms,” the letter said.

In a press release, Liberty Counsel said the man claims to be transgender but “is…

Rescue Crews Search for Missing in Greek Wildfires; 79 Dead – Urban Christian News

Rescue crews were searching Wednesday through charred homes and cars for those still missing after the deadliest wildfires to hit Greece in decades decimated seaside areas near Athens, killing at least 79 people and sending thousands fleeing.

There was no official indication as to how many people might be missing, and some took to social media and Greek television stations with appeals for information on their loved ones.

Survivors described dramatic scenes of people fleeing to beaches and being forced to swim out to sea despite gale-force winds and high waves to escape choking smoke and flaming pine cones raining down into the water.

Fire service spokeswoman Stavroula Malliri said the death toll had increased by five to 79. There were fears it would increase further as rescue crews gradually went through the hundreds of burnt homes, while others searched the coastline and the sea.

More than 280 firefighters were still in the area to the northeast of Athens in the wider Rafina area, dousing the remaining flames to prevent flare-ups. A further 200 firefighters backed up by a water-dropping helicopter were tackling the second forest fire west of the capital, near Agioi Theodori, where local authorities pre-emptively evacuated three communities, a children’s summer camp and three monasteries overnight, according to the fire department.

Flags across Greece flew at half-staff after the prime minister declared three days of national mourning.

The two fires on either side of the Greek capital started Monday within hours of each other, fanned by gale-force winds that hampered…

Letters withheld by Lord Carey ‘could have helped bishop abuse probe’

Wayne Murdock, senior investigating officer into sexual abuse allegations against Ball in 1992 and 1993, said he expected Archbishop George Carey to provide information handed over by victims.

Lord Carey, who gave evidence to the enquiry on Tuesday, resigned as honorary assistant bishop in the Diocese of Oxford after an inquiry found he delayed a “proper investigation” into Ball’s crimes for two decades by failing to pass the information to police.

Mr Murdock, who was a Gloucestershire Police officer for 37 years, told the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse on Wednesday: “Those letters should have been handed over and they could have made a difference.

“They knew what was going on. My expectation would have been that if you’ve got anything, you hand it over.

“From the Church, you don’t expect information to be withheld. You know, that’s really common sense.”

It was suggested by Fiona Scolding QC that information given to Gloucestershire Police by victims – including details about prayer while not fully clothed and massages – was not materially different to letters received by Lord Carey at the time.

Mr Murdock said: “We should have been the judge of that, not the archbishop. He knew we were carrying out investigation and he withheld that information.

“Had we had names, we could have followed up, gone and interviewed them and perhaps we would have got far…

Police Officer Praises God When He Discovers Baby Alive in Woods

Police Officer Praises God When He Discovers Baby Alive in Woods

Deputy Ross Jessop and U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer Nick Scholz anxiously set out for the evening’s mission, both fearing they’d soon be making a gruesome discovery. They were racing against time to locate a missing 5-month-old baby buried in the woods alive more than 9 hours before. Then the two heard a faint noise and began racing up the dark Montana mountainside.

It all started when Francis Crowley crashed his car while driving along a game trail in the Lolo National Forest. Crowley, who later admitted to being under the influence of both methamphetamine and bath salts, told officers different confusing versions of the crash, finally admitting that he’d left the baby behind when the child became “too heavy to carry.” He promised to direct the officers back to the crash site, but in his disoriented condition, he was unable to offer any help.

“Walking into this situation, you were mentally prepared for the worst.” Officer Scholz shared. “I remember Ross almost stepping on this little pile of sticks.”

Divine intervention had led them to that tiny, exact spot on the mountainside for a reason. When he noticed what was hidden beneath that little pile of sticks, Deputy Jessop’s fatherly instincts took over. “I abandoned any police training or any chance of saving evidence there – I didn’t care,” shared Deputy Jessop, himself a father of…

Former stockbroker announced as new Bishop of Warrington

Ven Mason, currently the Archdeacon of Richmond and Craven in the Diocese of Leeds, will minister alongside the Bishop of Liverpool as one of the “chief pastors” of the Liverpool Diocese.

Rt Revd Paul Bayes, Bishop of Liverpool said her appointment marks a new era in the diocese.

He said: “Bishops are called to lead the Church in holiness, in mission and in worship, and I know that Bev is richly equipped to do all these things among us.

“She will enrich the life of the Diocese and she will help us grow and flourish as we continue on the road we have chosen, asking God for a bigger church to make a bigger difference.”

After leaving school, Archdeacon Beverly worked for US stockbrokers in equity sales.

She became a Christian in 1994 when spending her gap year backpacking. It led to her to become a humanitarian aid worker for Christian charities before switching to ordained ministry.

Archdeacon Beverly said: “I join the Diocese of Liverpool at a crucial time for church and society.

“We live in a world full of uncertainties and with acts of violence; many are anxious and fearful, but one where so many are able to dream of a better world, hope for a better future.

“So many of these are driven by a strong spiritual connection to a God they might not know. The Church has a challenge to make that God real.”

Venerable Mason said she will encourage people to bring a friend to…
