Internet Filters Not Effective in Preventing Teens From Seeing Sexual Material

A new study has revealed that internet filters, designed to protect young people from seeing sexually explicit material, don’t really work.

Researchers Andrew K. Przybylski and Victoria Nash from the Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford looked at data provided by 9,352 male and 9,357 female subjects, ranging in age from 11 to 16 years, from the European Union and the U.K. They also analyzed data from an equal number of caregivers. Their analyses of the data “delivered conclusive evidence that filters were not effective for protecting young people from online sexual material.”

Nearly 50 percent of the subjects involved in the U.K. study and almost a quarter of those from the E.U. reported having some kind of internet filter. And yet, the study revealed that they were still able to see approximately the same amount of explicit material — nudity, private parts, people having sex — as those subjects who surfed online without filters.

Researchers were also surprised to find that “households reporting using filters were more, not less, likely to have an adolescent who reported having seen violent pornography in the past 6 months.”

Participants were more likely to report seeing images or videos of nudity than of violent porn.

The researchers also sought to “calculate the number of households which would have to be filtered to prevent one young person, who would otherwise see sexual material online, from encountering it over a 12-month period.”

“Depending on the form of content, results indicated that between 17 and 77 households would need to be…

Missouri Tourist Boat Capsizes in Stormy Waters, Killing 13

Missouri Tourist Boat Capsizes in Stormy Waters, Killing 13

Thursday evening, a tourist boat carrying 31 people capsized in Table Rock Lake outside of Branson, Missouri. The boat, known as a duck boat, is equipped for traveling on both water and land, however, due to a sudden storm, was unable to ride out the waves to make it safely back to shore.

Among the 13 deceased were children. Four people, including the driver of the boat, remain missing today.

“An off-duty sheriff’s deputy working security for the boat company” noticed the sinking vessel and went to assist the passengers, according to KCRA. With his help, 14 were able to survive.

“Branson was under a severe thunderstorm warning issued shortly before 6:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. ET), about half an hour before the boat capsized,” CNN reports, “Pattison said he believes the weather was calm when the duck boat went into the water,” they said of the president of Ride the Ducks Branson’s parent company. “Partway through coming back is when … the waves picked up and then obviously swamped the boat,” he said Friday morning.”

7 of the 14 survivors were injured in the event and were taken to a hospital, including the captain. 2 remain in critical condition.

Rescue and recovery efforts continue today to locate the missing passengers.

Please join us in prayer for the victims and family members affected by this tragedy.

LDS Church Asks Judge to Dismiss Woman’s Lawsuit Alleging Rape at Missionary Training Center

(Photo: Facebook)McKenna Denson, 55, of Pueblo, Colo. alleges that Joseph Bishop, 85, former leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Missionary Training Center sexually assaulted her in 1984.

Lawyers for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have asked a federal judge in Utah to dismiss a lawsuit from a woman accusing a former leader of the organization’s Missionary Training Center of sexual assault, arguing that it is too late.

In her lawsuit, the woman, McKenna Denson, 55, of Pueblo, Colorado, alleges she was sexually assaulted by the training center’s leader, Joseph Bishop, now 85, while she was a missionary there in 1984.

Attorneys for the LDS Church argued that the statute of limitations on Denson’s claim began ticking in 1984 when she alleges she was assaulted and argued that she could have filed a claim in 1988 when she says she reported the assault to LDS leaders, who took no action according to a FOX13 report.

“The statute begins to run when you realize no one reported back to you,” the LDS Church’s lawyer, David Jordan said.

U.S. District Judge Dale Kimball who is set to prepare a written ruling on the matter in 30 days wasn’t so sure.

“How would she know anything happened in 1988 to Mr. Bishop?” Kimball asked in court.

Jordan further…

Two Earthquakes Rock Surrey in 12 Hours – Urban Christian News

Surrey has been rocked by a 2.7 magnitude earthquake today – the second in just 12 hours.

The quake was the sixth to shake the area near both Gatwick and Heathrow airports in just four weeks – and raised the unlikely spectre of a ‘Big One’ hitting London.

Previous quakes have included a 2.6 magnitude tremor felt in parts of Surrey and West Sussex on June 27 and a quake measuring 2.6 recorded on June 30.

Today’s 2.7 tremor was recorded at Newdigate, which is eight miles from Gatwick and 30 miles from Heathrow, just after 1.30pm.

It was less than a mile below the surface.

Just hours earlier, a tremor was recorded at 4.59am at Newdigate at a magnitude of 2.0.

Large earthquakes are extremely rare in Britain but scientists recently uncovered two fault lines running directly under London.

9 family members who died in Missouri lake from same church

The Apostolic Gospel Church of Delano have posted a photo on facebook with the words: “PRAYER REQUEST: please pray for Zion Tabernacle Apostolic Church family in Indianapolis, Indiana who lost nine members in the tragic duck boat incident in Branson, Missouri. The church is reeling with grief and needs our love and prayer support. (Five adults and four children, all under the age of 10, from the family were killed. Not pictured here is another young girl who lost her life.)”

Vigils were held by the grief-stricken community following the deaths.

At one memorial, about 300 people gathered in the car park of Ride the Ducks of Branson and sang Amazing Grace. Mourners at a church sang the same words.

A survivor from the family has said the captain told passengers not to bother grabbing life jackets.

Tia Coleman told an Indianapolis television station that she and a nephew were the only survivors among 11 relatives aboard the boat.

She said she lost all her children, but she did not say how many.

Aaron Porter, who works in youth ministry in a Pentecostal church in Indiana, mentioned the lead pastor at the church in his tribute: “My heart aches for Dr.Griffin and Zion Tabernacle and the family who has lost so much. We are the body of Christ and when you hurt we hurt. You have our prayers and support. #OnlyGodCanComfort“

Excess Smartphone, Social Media and Tech Use by Teens Linked to ADHD Symptoms, Study Says

The current generation of teens is generally seen as heavy consumers of digital tech — smartphones, social media and the internet in particular. A new study has emerged, however, suggesting that this trend of habitual use of digital media could lead to the development of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder over time.

A research team from the University of Southern California has found a “modest” link between the frequency of digital media use and the chance of developing ADHD symptoms in teens.

Pixabay/terimakasih0A recent study finds suggestions of a link between heavy use of digital tech and ADHD in teens.

“More frequent use of digital media may be associated with development of ADHD symptoms,” the team lead by Adam Leventhal of USC’s Health, Emotion and Addiction Laboratory wrote in their findings, as published this Tuesday, July 17, in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The team followed around 2,600 high school students over a two year period, covering the age range of 15 and 16 years. What they found over that time is something that would worry parents everywhere — the heaviest users of digital media were found to be almost twice as likely to start exhibiting symptoms of ADHD, according to Forbes.

The link is not yet conclusive, however, and more study will be needed to establish that digital media was the direct cause of the ADHD symptoms. For this study, the team examined how frequently the teens used social media, texting, streaming video and other platforms for a total of 14 categories.

Students with existing ADHD diagnosis were excluded from the study, in…

One Way Your Church Can Help Solve Community Problems — Sam Rainer

Should Churches Go Into Debt? — Facts & Trends

Should churches go into debt? This question often elicits passionate responses from people at various points on the yes/no spectrum. The passion is often driven by a desire for their church to make the best decision to advance the gospel in their community and around the world. And this is a good thing.

3 Things Church Leaders Should Know About Blended Families — Joy Allmond

The married couples and children who make up blended families bring the same giftedness and value to a congregation as anyone else. But there are a few things to keep in mind when welcoming such a family into your congregation or trying to more deeply connect with them.

3 Spiritual Reasons You Should Take Control of Your Calendar — Michael Kelley

North Korea Found to Have the Most Modern-Day Slaves Worldwide

North Korea Found to Have the Most Modern-Day Slaves Worldwide

In a study published by The Global Slavery Index, in 2018, North Korea stands to have the most modern-day slaves, a total estimate of 2.6 million in the country. Types of slavery included in the study are “human trafficking, forced marriage, and the exploitation of children, along with slavery,” The Blaze reports. Not included is organ trafficking and child soldier recruitment:

“Unfortunately, due to the limits of existing data, it was not possible for the Global Estimates of Modern Slavery to measure and include the scale of trafficking for organ removal or the recruitment child soldiers,” The Global Slavery Index concludes.

The Global Slavery Index defines modern slavery this way: “Essentially, it refers to situations of exploitation that a person cannot refuse or leave because of threats, violence, coercion, deception, and/or abuse of power. For example, their passport might be taken away if they are in a foreign country, they might experience or be threatened with violence, or their family might be threatened.”

In North Korea, modern-day slavery is so common that citizens believe it’s their duty. The Blaze reports, “One panellist for the Global Slavery Index, Dr Jang Jin-sung, used to be a member of the North Korean elite class, but that did not exempt him from forced labor. Dr. Jang said that many North Koreans don’t even realize that they were being…

Masked Pastor Claims He Carried Out Ritual Murders of More Than 600 Children Handed to Him by Devil-Worshipping Doctors and Nurse in Bizarre Ghana TV Interview – Urban Christian News

A pastor has claimed to have carried out the ritual murders of more than 600 children handed to him as sacrifices by devil-worshipping doctors and nurses in Ghana.

The unnamed man wore a mask to disguise his identity as he made the shocking claims in a bizarre video, telling a television interviewer he had spent 17 years living with Satan.

In his ‘confession’, he said he had killed 675 people who were ‘mostly children’ given to him by members of an occult group in the medical profession.

Local reports, however, make no mention of any police investigation into alleged ritual murders and does not say when or where they are said to have taken place.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, went on to say that he was born with dark spirits and once had more than 650 demonic spirits at his disposal – some of which he named.

He said he had needed to make the sacrifices in order to sustain his power – but has since left the ‘Satanic kingdom’, according to reports in the country.
