Our Daily Bread Devotional 1 July 2018 – What Is God Like?

Topic: What Is God Like? [Our Daily Bread 1 Sunday July, 2018]

Read: Hebrews 1:1–10, Bible in a Year: Job 20–21; Acts 10:24–48

The Son is . . . the exact representation of [God’s] being. Hebrews 1:3

To celebrate a special occasion, my husband took me to a local art gallery and said I could choose a painting as a gift. I picked out a small picture of a brook flowing through a forest. The streambed took up most of the canvas, and because of this much of the sky was excluded from the picture. However, the stream’s reflection revealed the location of the sun, the treetops, and the hazy atmosphere. The only way to “see” the sky was to look at the surface of the water.

Jesus is like the stream, in a spiritual sense. When we want to see what God is like, we look at Jesus. The writer of Hebrews said He is “the exact representation of [God’s] being” (1:3). Although we can learn facts about God through direct statements in the Bible such as “God is love,” we can deepen our understanding by seeing the way God would act if He faced the same problems we have on Earth. Being God in human flesh, this is what Jesus has shown us.

In temptation, Jesus revealed God’s holiness. Confronting spiritual darkness, He demonstrated God’s authority. Wrestling with people problems, He showed us God’s wisdom. In His death, He illustrated God’s love.

Although we cannot grasp everything about God—He is limitless and we are limited in our thinking—we can be certain of His character when we look at Christ.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for making a way for us to know You. Help us to grow closer to You by looking at Jesus.

Looking at Jesus shows us God’s character.

Andrew Wommack’s Devotional 1 July 2018 – Sharing God’s Love

Topic: Sharing God‘s Love [Andrew Wommack Sunday July 1, 2018]

Luke 10:2 – “Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.”

It is commonly thought that an evangelist is someone who has a passion to lead people to the Lord. But every believer should have a passion for souls. When presenting the Gospel, we are not just presenting a theory about God but the factual account of God’s dealings with man as revealed through His Word, with the ultimate witness being the bodily resurrection of Jesus. Our personal witness of the reality of Jesus being alive in our lives brings Christ from theory to reality.

The early Christians had experienced the love of Christ in an intimate and life-transforming way. This motivated them to reach their known world with the Gospel of Christ more than any generation of Christians has done since. They didn’t have the benefits of our modern technology, but they did have the benefit of being full of the love of Christ. Experiencing the love of Christ causes us to be filled with the fullness of God (Eph. 3:19) and makes us a witness that the world cannot resist (John 13:35).

Today, much of the emphasis of the church is placed on techniques of evangelism or spiritual warfare. We motivate people to witness through feelings of guilt or punishment if they don’t. Much of our evangelism has become as dead and non-productive as that of the cults who knock on doors and argue people into their way of thinking. The early Christians had a much greater impact on their world because they were full of, and motivated by, the love of God. The church today needs a revival of our personal relationship with the Lord. When we can say with Paul that the love of Christ constrains us, then we will impact our world for the Lord too. You can’t give away what you don’t possess. We need to personally know the love of Christ in an experiential way before we try to share it with others.

Billy Graham Devotional 1 July 2018 – A Global Best-Seller

Topic: A Global Best-Seller [Billy Graham’s Devotional Sunday July 1, 2018]

His every word is a treasure of knowledge and understanding. — Proverbs 2:6 (TLB)

It is small wonder . . . the Bible has always been the world’s best-seller! No other book can touch its profound wisdom, its poetic beauty, or the accuracy of its history and prophecy. Its critics who claimed it to be filled with forgery, fiction, and unfulfilled promises are finding that the difficulties lie with themselves, and not the Bible. Greater and more careful scholarship has shown that apparent contradictions were caused by incorrect translations, rather than divine inconsistencies. It was man and not the Bible that needed correcting. And yet—in many homes and among so-called educated people—it has become fashionable to joke about the Bible and to regard it more as a dust-catcher than as the living Word of God. . . . Too many families have used the Bible as a safe storage place for old letters and pressed flowers, and have overlooked entirely the help and assurance that God intended this Book to give them.

Prayer for the day: Almighty God, I praise You for the authority of Your Word, which speaks to me of my redemption, life as it should be lived, peace and eternal life with You.

No Limit on How Long Humans Can Live, New Study Claims

(Photo: Creative Commons)Researchers say after age 105, the risk of dying remains the same.

While the average life expectancy for Americans currently stands at 78.7 years, results from a new study conducted by a team of researchers from Europe and the U.S. suggests that there’s no limit on how long people can live.

In the study published Thursday in the journal, Science, researchers examined 3,836 Italians aged 105 and older between 2009 and 2015 and found that after age 105, the risk of dying remains the same.

“We observed level hazard curves, which were essentially constant beyond age 105. Our estimates are free from artifacts of aggregation that limited earlier studies and provide the best evidence to date for the existence of extreme-age mortality plateaus in humans,” the researchers said in an abstract of their findings.

Kenneth Wachter, a professor of statistics at the University of California, Berkeley, who is co-author of the study, explained to AFP that: “As we age, our health and risks of death get worse faster and faster. But at extreme ages, they stop getting worse. They don’t get better, but they stop getting worse. They level out — it’s called a plateau.”

The study also looked at mortality among people born in the same years…

Asian leader won’t say sorry for calling God stupid ‘in a million years’

Rodrigo Duterte drew criticism from political and religious leaders alike in the staunchly Catholic nation for the comment he made in a recent speech.

The 73-year-old was quoted by The Manila Times as saying “I will not do that, not in a million years,” during a media interview in the central province of Bohol.

A letter sent to the leader on Monday by the Philippines for Jesus Movement – which claims to represent ten million people – urged him to say sorry.

Duterte questioned the biblical account of creation – specifically why God made Adam and Eve only to let them to succumb to sin.

Mr Duterte asked: “Who is this stupid God? This son of a ***** is then really stupid.”

CC

Opposition senator Antonio Trillanes IV branded Duterte – who has launched outspoken attacks on other public figures including the pope – an “evil man”.

The politician said his comments were “very much consistent with the deceitfulness, heartlessness and ruthlessness of his policies”.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Bishop Arturo Bastes called for prayer to put a stop to Duterte’s “blasphemous utterances”.

Gunman killed himself after church shooting, post-mortem finds

An unborn baby was among those who died when Devin Patrick Kelley stormed the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs last November and opened fire.

Medical tests, first reported on by the San Antonio-based broadcaster KENS and later by Associated Press, also concluded that small levels of cannabis and anti-anxiety drugs were detected in his system.

The results of an examination on the 26-year-old’s body were released by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Kelley was found dead inside a vehicle after being shot and chased by two men who heard him shooting worshippers on 5th November.

The 14-year-old daughter of the church’s pastor Frank Pomeroy was among several children who died in the incident which is the deadliest mass attack Texas has ever seen.

According to investigators, it may have been linked to a rift between Kelley and his mother-in-law, who attended the church but was not there on the day of the shooting.

He had previously been thrown out of the US Air Force for assaulting his spouse and child.

One family which lost several relatives in the shooting is suing the federal government, claiming that failings by the military allowed Kelley to purchase the rifle he used in the shooting.

Mona Charen Wanted to Be Called ‘Timmy’ as a Child, Is Thankful She Didn’t Grow Up Today

(Photo: K Best Photography)Mona Charen

WASHINGTON — Mona Charen is a well-known conservative author, columnist and speech writer who has spoken out about the dangers of modern feminism and the transgender identity push on children. But what many might not know about her is that at one point in her childhood, she wanted people to call her “Timmy.”

“I shudder to think what would have happened if I had come along a little later in history,” Charen told The Christian Post during an interview this week about her book, Sex Matters: How Modern Feminism Lost Touch With Science, Love and Common Sense.

Charen, a senior fellow at the Washington, D.C.-based think tank Ethics & Public Policy Center and a columnist for the National Review, spoke out against the trend nowadays in which parents are not assigning a sex to their children and let them grow up to be whatever gender they desire to be.

Ed Sheeran’s wedding chapel plans refused

The chart-topping musician was told the building – proposed for the grounds of his estate in Dennington, north of Ipswich – would be at odds with the character of the local area.

Refusing planning permission, Suffolk Coastal District Council said the design would “be in conflict with the prevailing landscape character, creating the impression of a second village church”.

Citing “unsatisfactory visual impacts”, the authority went on to say: “This would result in visual conflict with the character of the existing local landscape.”

Sheeran had hoped to tie the knot inside the round tower with his fiancée Cheery Seaborn. The pair announced they were engaged in January this year.

The 27-year-old’s planning permission application said the building was intended solely for use by its owner – and it would not be hired out.

The document also said: “It is every person’s right to be able to have a place of retreat for contemplation and prayer, for religious observance, celebration of key life and family milestones, marriages, christenings and so forth.”

The Shape of You singer called in experts to check for great crested newts in his estate after the Suffolk Wildlife Trust said it was possible ponds within the boundaries “could be breeding sites for this species”.

Rejecting the plans, the Council also raised concern over the…

How to Put Financial Stress On Your Marriage Before You Even Say “I Do” — Art Rainer

Without question, these are exciting times for you and your fiancé. Each day, you seem to learn more and more about the one you are marrying. The conversations go deeper than before. You are no longer talking about “me” or “you.” You are talking about “us.” And while the conversations take many thrilling turns, the topic of money is often left out. Why ruin the mood? Unfortunately, the lack of financial communication before marriage can lead to financial stress during marriage. So let’s consider how you create a financially stressful marriage before you even say “I do.”

New Tax Law Could Cost Churches, Non-Profits a Billion Dollars — Facts & Trends

A new tax law could cost churches and other nonprofits a bundle. As in a billion dollars—just for offering free parking and other benefits to employees. Last year’s tax reform bill changed the law so for-profit businesses could no longer write off such benefits. Unfortunately, says Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA), that change affects churches and other nonprofits.

9 Ways to Get Outside the Christian Bubble — Chuck Lawless

I’m convinced that many Christians don’t do much evangelism because they don’t really know many non-believers in the first place. They live inside the Christian bubble and wait for lost persons to come their way. The gospel, though, is about a God who came to a non-believing…

Former WWE star ‘went home to be with Jesus’ after cancer battle, aged 38

In an emotional message to supporters, Lindsey Cappotelli said her late husband was the person she “wanted to grow old with” but she knows “where he is now is so much better”.

She wrote: “Today, my love – my strong, sweet, beautiful love – took his last breath at 3:30am and went home to be with Jesus – exactly one year after his brain surgery.”

“I miss him so much. I know where he is now is so much better, but it doesn’t change how much I miss him.”

Matt, who appeared on the WWE Superstars show and won the third season of the WWE Tough Enough series, was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumour after complaining of headaches and seizure-like symptoms last June.

The late professional wrestler, who was previously a member of the Western Michigan University football team, had previously needed cancer surgery eleven years ago.

Speaking to WWE.com at time – in April 2007 – he said: “God is in control, and I have complete faith in what he’s doing.

“There’s a scripture I read quite often that describes my situation; it says God’s strength is made perfect in my weakness, and I think this is a time where I’m at the darkest point of my life.”

A surgeon was able to removed 90 per cent of the glioblastoma when he underwent surgery on June 29th 2017.
