A woman’s sore throat was a worm in her tonsil: Three biblical responses

Adobe Stock

A twenty-five-year-old woman went to the hospital after dealing with pain and irritation in her throat for five days. Her symptoms began after she consumed sashimi, a kind of raw fish. According to “The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene” report, doctors soon identified the problem: a 1.5-inch black worm in her tonsil.

Further tests showed that she had been infected with Pseudoterranova azarasi, a parasitic roundworm that usually infects marine mammals such as walruses and seals. Humans can contract the worm by consuming raw fish or squid. When the worm is seen, it is usually found in the stomach; infections in the throat are reportedly rare.

A parable of human nature

This Japanese woman’s experience is a parable of human nature. Consider three responses:

One: We should learn from each other.

I have eaten raw fish in the form of sushi many times over the years. I have also eaten raw fish when traveling overseas. Not until reading this report did I worry that I might contract a worm in my tonsil as a result.

What happens to you might happen to me. One reason COVID-19 is such a global crisis is that the virus can infect anyone on the globe. An effective vaccine developed in one country will be extremely good news for every country.

As a result, humans should learn from history and each other. Joseph teaches us that personal integrity can lead to global significance. Moses shows us that one man can speak truth to power and change the course of history. Daniel reminds us that our God is greater than any earthly threat. Paul is proof that the Holy Spirit can transform any sinner into a sanctified messenger of truth. John’s encounter with Jesus on Patmos demonstrates our Lord’s omnipresent grace.

If you will follow Jesus fully today, your faithfulness will touch those you influence and echo in eternity.

Two: What is hidden seldom stays hidden.

God says of sinful people, “My eyes are on…

New York Pastor Says God Began to Heal Him from COVID-19 after His Doctor Prayed for Him

New York Pastor Says God Began to Heal Him from COVID-19 after His Doctor Prayed for Him

A New York pastor says God began to help heal him from coronavirus after his doctor prayed for him.

In a YouTube video by The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, Pastor Benjamin Thomas of The Queens Church of God says his case of COVID-19 lasted more than 100 days, including 54 days on a ventilator and six weeks in a coma.

“It was a very rough journey,” he said. “Still, I’m going home today. COVID-19 is real. I know some people do not want to wear masks and don’t want to keep social distancing. It is very important to take this thing seriously. You don’t want to go [through] what I went through.”

Thomas was first admitted to a Long Island hospital and placed on a ventilator. His family then asked for him to be transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital.

“During the first couple of weeks of April we were not making much headway and there was one point in particular which was the night of April 19th,” his doctor, Robin Varghese, said. “I was on call that night and he was in the worst shape, and many of our team members who were rooting for him were also losing hope, as was I.”

“At that point, I went into his room really late at night as I was on call,” the doctor said. “I really just told God there’s nothing else I can offer him. He’s got to take over because we had given him everything that modern medicine can throw at him.”

Later that night, Varghese said he had a realization of…

Could a COVID-19 Vaccine Be the Mark of the Beast? – Hank Hanegraaff Answers

Could a COVID-19 Vaccine Be the Mark of the Beast? – Hank Hanegraaff Answers

Could a COVID-19 vaccine potentially be the mark of the beast as referenced in Revelation 13:18?

Author and Christian talk show host Hank Hanegraaff tackled that question on his Bible Answer Man broadcast this week following comments by singer Kanye West, who said the vaccine would be the mark of the beast.

Hanegraaff, though, said it would not be the mark. The mark of the beast, he asserted, is symbolic.

“The mark in Revelation chapter 13 symbolizes identity with the beast. And as such, identifying with Satan’s kingdom is what will keep you out of heaven, not getting vaccinated,” said Hanegraaff, who holds a preterist view of the end times.

Hanegraaff gave an example to support his view: “In Exodus chapter 13, eating unleavened bread is likened to a sign on the hand and a reminder on the forehead of the children of Israel. And thus, the mark of the beast in Revelation is securely tethered to the Scripture.”

Taking on the mark of the beast, he said, is “the intentional denial in thought, in word, in deed of the Lordship of Jesus Christ.”

Referencing discussion about the vaccine being the mark of the beast, Hanegraaff urged Christians to not partake in the “trafficking in selling of sensationalism.”

“Fall in love with the Word of God all over again, rather than falling in love with the words of social icons,” he encouraged the audience.

Hanegraaff also urged…

Three California Churches Sue Gov. Newsom for Ban on Singing in Places of Worship

Three California Churches Sue Gov. Newsom for Ban on Singing in Places of Worship

(RNS) — Three evangelical churches in California have sued Gov. Gavin Newsom for banning singing and chanting in places of worship but permitting such activities elsewhere.

The state’s July 13 order about COVID-19 permits worship services as well as fitness centers, hotels, shopping malls and protests to remain open or active in Mendocino and Butte counties, where the suing churches are located.

“Singing and chanting, however, is only banned in places of worship,” says the 20-page complaint filed Wednesday (July 15) in a federal district court by the American Center for Law and Justice and two other legal groups.

Calvary Chapel Ukiah, Calvary Chapel Fort Bragg and River of Life Church in Oroville asked the court to halt officials in the state and their counties from enforcing the orders that call for no singing in houses of worship.

“Banning singing in California churches is an unconstitutional abuse of power,” said Jordan Sekulow, executive director of the ACLJ, in an announcement about the suit. “And to do it in the name of a pandemic is despicable.”

The state’s early July guidance for houses of worship notes a higher risk of transmitting COVID-19 in a congregational setting of multiple households.

“In particular, activities such as singing and chanting negate the risk-reduction achieved through six feet of physical distancing,” the 14-page document…

Renounce Christ or Lose Government Assistance, China’s Low-Income Christians Are Told

Renounce Christ or Lose Government Assistance, China’s Low-Income Christians Are Told

Christian citizens in China who receive social welfare payments have been ordered to abandon their faith or risk losing government support, according to a new report.

The policy impacts low-income religious citizens who receive government assistance, according to Bitter Winter, a watchdog that monitors reports of persecution in China.

Multiple cities and towns across the country have implemented the policy.

In April, officials from several villages in Shanxi province were called together for a meeting and ordered by the government “to remove crosses, religious symbols and images from the homes of people of faith who receive social welfare payments” and replace them with portraits of former Chinese leader Mao Zedong (1893-1976) and current President Xi Jinping.

A Christian in one of the villages told Bitter Winter that officials tore down Christian imagery in his home and hung a picture of Zedong.

“Impoverished religious households can’t receive money from the state for nothing – they must obey the Communist Party for the money they receive,” the Christian told Bitter Winter.

A house church pastor said village officials visited his home in May and replaced a cross with a picture of Zedong.

“All impoverished households in the town were told to display Mao Zedong images,” the pastor said. “The government is trying to eliminate our belief and wants to become…

A young boy saves his sister from an attacking dog, ‘Avengers’ actors respond

A six-year-old boy named Bridger has joined the ranks of the Avengers.

His aunt, Nikki Walker, recently shared his story on social media: “My nephew is a hero who saved his little sister from an attacking dog. He, himself, took on the attack so that the dog wouldn’t get his sister.”

Nikki continued: “He later said, ‘If someone was going to die, I thought it should be me.’” In a follow-up post, Nikki wrote, “After getting bit several times on the face and head, he grabbed his sister’s hand and ran with her to keep her safe.”

According to her social media posts, Bridger recently returned home from the hospital. She then wrote: “I know it’s a long shot, but I’m reaching out to the Avengers and other heroes so that they can learn about this latest addition to their ranks.”

Her post received this response from Mark Ruffalo: “Dear Bridger, I just read about what happened to you and I wanted to reach out to say this . . . People who put the well beings of others in front of themselves are the most heroic and thoughtful people I know. I truly respect and admire your courage and your heart. Real courage isn’t dominating people or fighting against people or walking around like a tough guy. Real courage is knowing what is right to do and doing it even when it might end up hurting you somehow. You are more of a man than many, many I have seen or known. With admiration . . . Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk/Professor).”

Chris Evans, who plays Captain America in the film series, also sent a video message: “I read your story and saw what you did. Pal, you’re a hero, what you did was so brave, so selfless—your sister is so lucky to have you as a big brother. Your parents must be so proud of you.”

Evans told Bridger that he is…

‘We Love Law Enforcement’: Church Gifts $1,000 to Every Police Officer in Its Town

‘We Love Law Enforcement’: Church Gifts $1,000 to Every Police Officer in Its Town

A small-town church in Tennessee is receiving nationwide attention after honoring its local police department in a public ceremony with a gift of $1,000 for each officer.

The congregation, Lighthouse Baptist Church in Jonesboro, Tenn., wanted to encourage the officers in light of criticism police have received nationally in recent months.

All total, it cost the church $23,000 to honor Jonesboro’s entire police force of 23 officers.

The ceremony was so unique that Lighthouse Baptist Church pastor Perry Cleek was invited to the White House for a July 13 event on law enforcement.

“Our church watched over the last few weeks … the way that our police officers were treated all over the country,” Cleek said at the White House.

Police officers, he said, have “been demonized and disgraced and dishonored.”

“And we got our heads together and thought, ‘What can we do as a small church in a small town to honor our police, and to let our voice be known?’ … The voice of small-town America is seldom heard.”

Cleek and his church landed on an idea: a public ceremony honoring the local department.

“We went through the chief of police and the public safety director, and we asked them if we could hold a public ceremony on the steps of the courthouse on Main Street in Jonesboro, on July 4 at 11 o’clock in the morning, and present each member of the Jonesboro Police…

Why Bari Weiss’ resignation from the New York Times matters to evangelicals and to American culture

Former staff editor and writer for the New York Times, Bari Weiss is seen on stage during day two of the Miami Book Fair presented by Miami Dade College, Wolfson Campus on November 18, 2019 in Miami, Florida. (Photo by Alberto E. Tamargo/Sipa USA)(Sipa via AP Images)

Bari Weiss resigned from the New York Times this week. Why is this news so relevant to you that you should read this Daily Article about her?

Let’s begin with her unusual story. She is not your stereotypical conservative: She has dated an actress and a female reporter and was married to a man for four years. She attended a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, while growing up in that city, then spent a year in Israel after high school.

Vanity Fair described her as a “Trump-loathing theater nerd” and a “liberal humanist whose guiding principle is free expression in art, love, and discourse.” Following President Trump’s election in 2016, she was hired by the Times for the purpose, she says, of “bringing in voices that would not otherwise appear in your pages: first-time writers, centrists, conservatives, and others who would not naturally think of the Times as their home.”

However, over the last three years, she says she has been “the subject of constant bullying by colleagues who disagree with my views. They have called me a Nazi and a racist . . . [and] publicly smear me as a liar and a bigot on Twitter with no fear that harassing me will be met with appropriate action. They never are.”

Her experience could be discussed as an example of “cancel culture,” a topic we discussed yesterday. For today, however, I want to focus on another statement in her resignation letter. At the Times, she discovered that a “new consensus has emerged in the press, but perhaps especially at this paper: that truth isn’t a process of collective discovery, but an orthodoxy already known to an enlightened few whose job is to inform everyone else.”

This…

Four Immediate Effects of COVID-19 on Your Church’s Communication

There’s probably not a single ministry in your church right now that is not feeling the effects of COVID19. Whether it’s your media ministry learning how to live-stream or your small group leaders learning how to lead on Zoom, everyone is learning to do ministry differently.

One area that I would imagine has felt the most impact is your church’s communications. It may be your social media, your website, or your weekly email to your congregation. There is a tremendous amount of pressure to communicate more effectively than ever before.

In this post, we’re going to look at four immediate effects of COVID-19 on your church’s communication and how you can retool your communications to adapt.

  1. Your church does not have everyone’s full attention.

One of the advantages of Sunday morning worship is that you have your audience’s full attention. Of course, people still look at their phones or daydream during worship, but for the most part you have their attention.

However, when you remove that weekly ritual of coming to a physical location and instead replace it with a screen (i.e., live streaming of worship), your audience’s attention will inevitably be fractured. So you’re now in a situation where you may get a few minutes here or there, but not a full hour like you would on Sunday morning.

A fractured attention span will require you to think in “micro-moments.” By “micro-moments,” I’m referring to thinking of small moments through which you can connect…

Comedian John Crist Breaks Silence: ‘The Biggest Hypocrite in All This Was Me’

Christian comedian John Crist spoke out on social media Wednesday for the first time in eight months, acknowledging the “hurt” and “embarrassment” he caused others.

“The biggest hypocrite in all this was me,” a pensive Crist said in a four-minute Instagram video.

Crist, in a November statement, admitted to “sexual sin and addiction struggles.” . story broke just as Crist was embarking on a nationwide tour and shortly after Netflix launched a special featuring his comedy. The tour was canceled, and Netflix pulled the show.

Crist, in the new video, said he was “incredibly humbled to receive” support the past few months that was “certainly undeserved based on decisions that I made in my personal life.”

“I made a lot of poor choices in my personal life. … I made a lot of decisions that hurt myself, that hurt other people, and embarrassed myself and had consequences,” he said. “I can look you in the eye and own that. … Those decisions were mine and no one else’s and no one else is to be blamed. … I made those choices. … I had a problem, and I needed to get some help.”

“… The most embarrassing part of this whole thing is that the biggest hypocrite in all this was me – that I was portraying…
