‘You Don’t Need Help from Above, It’s within Us,’ CNN Host Chris Cuomo Asserts

During Friday’s Cuomo Prime Time broadcast, host Chris Cuomo asserted that instead of trusting God to get us through these uncertain times, we should look “within us” for the answers.

“If you believe in one another and if you do the right thing for yourself and your community, things will get better in this country,” Cuomo said, according to the Daily Wire.

“You don’t need help from above, it’s within us,” the CNN host stressed as he pointed toward the sky.

A 13-second clip of this moment from the broadcast went viral on social media, Tuesday with many Christians speaking out against the television host.

Allie Beth Stuckey, host of the Relatable podcast, offered a sarcastic response to Cuomo writing, “Chris Cuomo: ‘You don’t need help from above; it’s within us.’ Yep, that tactic is working SUPER well right now!”

Pastor and writer Nate Pickowicz also commented on the clip captioning it, “The spirit of this age.”

Christian author Larry Farlow asked in response to the clip, “How do we know what ‘the right thing’ is, Chris?”

Evangelical Leaders Are Speaking up about Race — But Will This New Focus Last?

Evangelical Leaders Are Speaking up about Race — But Will This New Focus Last?

(RNS) — Southern Baptist Convention President J.D. Greear said, “Of course, Black lives matter.”

Religious broadcasting veteran Pat Robertson stated, “It seems like now is the time to say, ‘I understand your pain. I want to comfort you.’”

Houston megachurch pastor Joel Osteen declared, “We need to stand up against injustice and stand with our Black brothers and sisters.”

Many prominent white evangelicals have made statements about Black lives in the weeks since the May 25 death of George Floyd, but is this new focus among white conservatives — and white Christians in general — momentary or lasting?

Researchers working at the crossroads of religion and race say it’s too soon to say. But highlights of a forthcoming study, which looks at racism, biblical interpretation and church cultures, may indicate a long struggle ahead.

Michael Emerson, co-author of the 2000 book “Divided by Faith: Evangelical Religion and the Problem of Race in America,” said 2019 findings indicate “zero evidence” of a closing of the long-standing gap between how white evangelicals and Black Christians view racial inequality.

When asked if the country has historically been oppressive for racial minorities, 82 percent of white evangelicals do not agree, said Emerson, head of the sociology department at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In comparison, among practicing…

President signed Civil Rights Act on this day in 1964: Why the Act was so important and what we can do today

U.S. President Lyndon Johnson passes out some of the 72 pens he used to sign the civil rights bill in Washington D.C. on July 2, 1964.

On this day in 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act. The law ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

Following the Civil War, the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery and the Fourteenth Amendment made former slaves citizens. The Fifteenth Amendment then gave all people the right to vote regardless of race. However, it allowed states to determine the specific qualifications for suffrage.

In the following decades, Southern state legislatures used literacy tests, poll taxes, and other discriminatory measures to disenfranchise a majority of Black voters. White-dominated state legislatures were then able to consolidate control and establish Jim Crow laws, a system of segregation that remained in place for nearly a century.

The civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s led to the Civil Rights Act. The following year, President Johnson signed into law the Voting Rights Act, which banned literacy tests and other methods used to disenfranchise Black voters. In 1966, the US Supreme Court ruled in Harper v. Virginia Board of Education that poll taxes (which the Twenty-fourth Amendment had eliminated for federal elections in 1964) were unconstitutional for state and local elections as well.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called the Civil Rights Act of 1964 nothing less than a “second emancipation.” But, as our nation has learned following the horrific death of George Floyd, much remains to be done.

Why the Act was so important and what we can do today

The Bible consistently and strongly condemns racism in all its forms. Paul struck down the racial and social barriers of his day when he proclaimed: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and…

New Video Footage Appears to Show Planned Parenthood Affiliate Testifying to the Dissection of Intact Babies

New Video Footage Appears to Show Planned Parenthood Affiliate Testifying to the Dissection of Intact Babies

The anti-abortion organization Center for Medical Progress (CMP) has published a new video revealing that babies who survived abortions are dissected, according to sworn in testimonies of Planned Parenthood partners.

CMP had previously released videos of Planned Parenthood officials seemingly admitting to the sale of fetal organs while under oath.

According to Live Action, CMP’s latest footage features Perrin Larton, who is the Procurement Manager for Planned Parenthood’s procurement partner Advanced Bioscience Resources, Inc., being shown a taped conversation of herself from 2013 where she asserts that it is rare for aborted babies to come out in one piece, noting that they are “always pulled apart.”

She said that the exception applies to “somebody who has had six pregnancies and six vaginal deliveries.”

Larton continued: “They put lams [laminaria to dilate cervix] and she comes in the next morning and… I literally have had women come in and they’ll go to the O.R. and they’re back out in three minutes and I’m going, ‘What’s going on?’

“‘Oh yeah, the fetus was already in the vaginal canal and whenever we put her in the stirrups it just fell out,’” she said.

After seeing the 2013 video, Larton affirmed how intact aborted babies would occasionally fall out “once every couple of months.”

Then the baby’s organs and…

Film ‘mocks Christianity and ridicules people of faith’: A ‘tale of two cities’ and God’s plan for our problems

Adobe Stock

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

Thus begins Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, one of the most famous novels in history. There has not been a time in my lifetime when his words were more appropriate than they are today.

Forbes headlines: “The Stock Market Just Had Its Best Quarter Since 1998.” Of course, this surge followed the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression

Goldman Sachs reports that a national mask mandate could save the US economy $1 trillion. But “America has an individualistic culture,” as one expert on mask law notes, making mask-wearing requirements controversial.

Christians are expressing gratitude for the Supreme Court ruling that states cannot discriminate against religious schools. But a “blasphemous Hollywood film” in which Paris Jackson (Michael Jackson’s daughter) plays Jesus is sparking outrage. The group One Million Moms has started a petition to stop the film from reaching the public, saying it “mocks Christianity and ridicules people of faith.”

What C. S. Lewis didn’t say

This quote by C. S. Lewis seems relevant: “The fact that our heart yearns for something Earth can’t supply is proof that Heaven must be our home.” However, in keeping with our “tale of two cities” theme, we should note that C. S. Lewis didn’t write these words. But he did write this: “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”

I like what he actually wrote better than what he supposedly wrote.

Like you, I yearn for a world which is not “two cities” but one. I yearn for joy with no sorrow, light…

The Challenges and Joys of Families Worshipping Together

As churches begin to reopen, the majority of congregations are not opening children’s ministries. Families will worship together. This change is drastic for most churches, creating a bit of anxiety for parents and preachers alike.

There are several obvious challenges that come with having kids of all ages in the worship space.

  1. Kids distract parents from worship. They wiggle. They whisper. They have one hundred questions or observations. Parents don’t get a “break” to worship on their own.
  2. Kids can’t sit through the whole service. Kids don’t have many environments where they have to sit still and be quiet for a lengthy amount of time. Parents will have to leave the service, causing distractions and causing them to miss the service.
  3. Kids won’t get anything out of it. One of the major reasons that we typically have children’s ministry is to provide age-appropriate learning opportunities. Pastors typically preach to adults. There is a legitimate concern that we “waste” kids time by not providing age-specific instruction.
  4. Kids might distract others. Kids can be distracting even at their quietest. Is it really fair to the other adults to be distracted by whispers or cries or other strange noises?

These challenges are real. But what if God is using this time to do something unique in our churches and our families?

What if in this season…

  • Parents play a more critical role in discipling their kids on Sunday morning. Instead of pulling into the parking lot and…

Israel to Postpone West Bank Annexation Plan

Israel to Postpone West Bank Annexation Plan

Despite having pointed to July 1 as his initial target date to begin the annexation of the West Bank, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated on Tuesday that the move would be delayed.

According to the Associated Press, on Tuesday, after speaking with White House envoy Avi Berkowitz and the U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, Netanyahu noted that discussions with the United States about the controversial annexation plan would continue in the days ahead.

“I spoke about the question of sovereignty, which we are working on these days and we will continue to work on in the coming days,” Netanyahu said.

The annexation, which is a part of President Donald Trump’s Middle East peace plan, or the “Peace to Prosperity” plan, has been met with widespread criticism on the international stage. Among the plan’s critics are the United Nations secretary-general, the European Union and several Arab countries. Many of these same entities believe that Israel’s annexation of the West Bank – a highly disputed area between Palestine and Israel – would violate international law and hinder Palestine’s ability to become a viable independent state.

As Christian Headlines previously reported, Trump’s plan calls for an independent Palestinian state and declares Israel as sovereign over the West Bank settlements. Also under the plan, Jerusalem would remain Israel’s capital.

After the plan was…

Fonzworth Bentley, Louis Upkins Stress the Importance of Fathering Godly Children of Color

Fonzworth Bentley, Louis Upkins Stress the Importance of Fathering Godly Children of Color

It’s Saturday morning and I can hear Derek Watkins’, also known as Fonzworth Bentley, and Louis Upkins’ morning routines in the background.

Upkins is an established business consultant and coach to influential leaders and Watkins is best known for being the host of MTV’s reality TV show “From G’s to Gents” and for working as Sean Combs’s personal assistant.

Just as in their morning routines, while the two African American men are much different, they have in common their strong relationships with Jesus and their desire to raise their children to have faith in Christ as well. For this reason, while the two men live in different parts of the country, they hold each other accountable to be the best fathers that they can be.

It doesn’t take long into the conversation before the two men start talking about what they love about their role as a father and their desire to raise Godly children of color.

“I love being a dad and the role that it provides me to be there for my kids, to give them the love and wisdom that they need,” Watkins shared.

Somewhat fatigued with the level of racial injustices they are currently seeing in our country, both men also admitted that being a father to children of color can, at times, be stressful.

Sharing with his kids that “they are created in the image of God” is an important reminder, Upkins asserted, adding that while God made…

Giving thanks for Robert Moon and Henry Bentley Hahn, Sr.: The history of ZIP codes and the transforming power of gratitude

Adobe Stock

I work in zip code 75252. Previously, I worked in zip code 75225. Before that, it was 30305 and before that, it was 79701.

These are just numbers to me, but to the US Postal Service, they are vital information. Their employees would know that I work in North Dallas now, moving here from the Park Cities area of Dallas. Previously I worked in Atlanta, Georgia, and before that, Midland, Texas.

Why is this information relevant today? Because today is the anniversary of the US Postal Service Zone Improvement Plan, known to us as ZIP codes, first implemented in 1963.

Previously, the Postal Service utilized postal zones for many large cities, an innovation it began in 1943. For example, your address could include Minneapolis 16, Minnesota. However, as cities began to grow, more specificity was required.

Enter Robert Moon and Henry Bentley Hahn, Sr. Working as a postal inspector in 1944, Mr. Moon submitted a proposal that led to the Sectional Center Facility (SCF) designation comprising the first three digits of the ZIP code. An SCF is a central mail processing facility.

The fourth and fifth digits give a more precise location within the SCF and were proposed by Mr. Hahn.

Mail is sent to the appropriate SCF according to the first three digits. SCF employees, most of whom work the night shift, then sort it to the various post offices according to the last two digits. SCF facilities do not deliver mail and are not open to the public, though they may include a public post office.

The history of ZIP codes and the transforming power of gratitude

You now know more about ZIP codes than you probably knew before. Other than its anniversary, what makes this topic relevant today?

Consider the fact that every piece of mail you receive is delivered to you as the result of people you do not know and will likely never meet. I had never heard of Robert Moon or Henry Bentley Hahn, Sr., before today. I had no idea Sectional Center…
