Tanzanian miner uses instant wealth to better his community: How can you change your world?

In this image made from video taken Wednesday, June 24, 2020, miner Saniniu Laizer, center-left, receives a cheque from government officials for 7,744,152,703.82 Tanzanian Shillings ($3.4 million), at a ceremony in Mererani, Tanzania Wednesday, June 24, 2020. (AP Photo)

Saniniu Laizer, a small-scale miner in Tanzania, became an overnight millionaire this week after finding the two largest tanzanite gemstones ever discovered. One weighed 20.3 pounds, the other 12.7. The largest tanzanite gemstone previously found weighed 7.3 pounds.

The miner sold them for approximately $3.4 million and plans to use his overnight wealth to build a school and a shopping mall to aid the poor in his community. He is leveraging his new wealth to lift his entire community.

Another small wonder

Later this summer, August 26 to be exact, would have been Mother Teresa 110th birthday. This diminutive powerhouse was a beacon of hope to almost everyone she met. She was born in Albania, lived some time in Ireland, but dedicated most of her life to serving the poorest of people in India. She did everything she could with the backdrop of poverty and recruited others to do even more.

She was recognized in her lifetime as an outstanding humanitarian. Her lifelong selfless acts of charity included giving the almost $200,000 Nobel Prize winnings to the poor of India. She died in 1997 and was canonized by the Catholic church almost exactly one year later.

Throwing starfish

Few of us will experience the quick wealth of that Tanzanian miner or the lifelong self-denial of that little Albanian nun. Many of us are at a loss on how to make a difference in the lives of others while facing racial strife, economic turmoil and unemployment, and an ever-spiking pandemic.

But, all of us can do something.

I’m reminded of the young girl throwing starfish back into the sea because they’d die on the beach as the tide was going out. With the enormity of the beach and the…

‘Jesus Christ Is the Most Famous Black Radical Revolutionary In History,’ Black Lives Matter Leader Says

‘Jesus Christ Is the Most Famous Black Radical Revolutionary In History,’ Black Lives Matter Leader Says

In an interview with Fox News, Hawk Newsome, the head of Black Lives Matter of Greater New York, claimed Jesus was “the most famous black radical revolutionary in history.”

On Wednesday evening, Fox News Host Martha MacCallum had Newsome on her show The Story to discuss his thoughts on violence and the Black Lives Matter Movement

MacCallum started out the interview by noting that Newsome has previously made comments about the necessity of violence in certain situations. MacCallum then asked the activist, “What exactly is it that you hope to achieve through violence?”

Newsome retorted by citing how America “is built upon violence,” adding, “for any American to accuse us of being violent, it’s extremely hypocritical.”

Newsome also noted that the BLM movement is about “saving lives”, not “abusing police officers.”

“We are talking about protecting lives and there is nothing more American than that,” he asserted.

Newsome also cited the Second Amendment and how it was hypocritical for Americans to look at Black people as violent when they talk about “arming themselves and defending themselves.”

“But when White people grab assault rifles and go to our nation/state capitals, it’s all good,” Newsome added.

MacCallum went on to address remarks Newsome made in a different interview about wanting to “burn down the…

Making and distributing a COVID-19 vaccine is the “biggest medical manufacturing challenge in history”: Hope that changes hearts forever

Adobe Stock

“This is the biggest logistical challenge the world has ever faced.” This is how Toby Peters, an engineering and technology expert at Britain’s Birmingham University, describes the task of manufacturing and delivering a vaccine for COVID-19 to the world. The Reuters article calls this the “biggest medical manufacturing challenge in history.”

Our focus since the start of the pandemic has understandably been on a vaccine to stop the disease. Researchers are developing more than 140 vaccines against coronavirus. Vaccines typically require years of research and testing before reaching the clinical stage, but scientists are working to produce an effective and safe vaccine by next year.

Of the vaccines currently under development, only three are in Phase III (large-scale efficacy tests), the last stage before being approved for use. Trial results will indicate whether regulators approve a candidate for public use.

Now we know that making and distributing a vaccine, should one be produced, is a daunting task as well.

In the meantime, the CDC says COVID-19 cases in the US could be ten times higher than reported. In other words, the true number of infected Americans may top twenty million. The Texas governor said this week that his state is facing a “massive outbreak” of the virus. State health departments reported more than 37,000 new cases yesterday, setting a one-day record.

This local story especially touched me: Betty and Curtis Tarpley of Fort Worth, Texas, were married for fifty-three years. Both contracted the virus. Nurses wheeled Betty into Curtis’s ICU room so they could be together. They died this week within an hour of each other.

The “glue” that holds our “potentially unstable society” together

We have been focusing on the theme of encouragement in discouraging times. As we face an escalating pandemic, ongoing recession, and divisive debates over policing, statues, and…

5 Mindset Shifts for an Effective Church Website Redesign

When it comes to website design, nothing stays the same for long. Technology is constantly changing. People’s online habits and expectations are always evolving. What worked last year might not make sense today.

On top of that, church websites in particular must serve a variety of audiences and meet a multitude of needs. It’s a unique challenge to say the least.

Before you start your next church website redesign, consider these five mindsets that might be a shift from traditional thinking, but put you in the right frame of mind to create an effective church website.

1. Lean on data for decision making.

When you start a church website design project, you’re going to encounter lots of opinions about what should go where and how it should be organized. While you want to accommodate all ministries and programs, everything can’t be top priority.

Familiarizing yourself with your current website’s performance metrics can help you build a case for how your new website should be structured and organized. Use a tool like Google Analytics to understand:

  • The most popular areas of your website, as well as those that are not visited.
  • The devices and browsers people use to access your site.
  • How long visitors stay on your site.
  • How visitors flow through the pages of your site.
  • What geographic areas your visitors come from.

While data isn’t the only factor in decision making, it can help guide you as you work to maximize your site’s effectiveness.

2. Think “mobile first.”

Over half…

Ligon Duncan Calls on Mississippi Legislature to Take Down State Flag

Ligon Duncan Calls on Mississippi Legislature to Take Down State Flag

In a post to his blog, Ligon Duncan, chancellor of Reformed Theological Seminary, encouraged the Mississippi legislature to take down the current state flag.

Asked for his opinion on the state’s flag by Mississippi’s Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann and Speaker of the House Philip Gunn, Duncan shared that while he sympathized with those who wish to keep the history of Mississippi alive, he loves his neighbors and wants “all of us, together, to be able to be proud of our State Flag.”

Duncan recalled his family’s Confederate history, noting that his ancestors fought for the Confederacy and “their descendants have been re-fighting ‘The War’ ever since.” He also shared that he grew up reading Lee’s Lieutenants as a child and served as a U.S. Senate Page under J. Strom Thurmond, who opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Despite his family’s ties to the Confederacy, Duncan asserted that the “1894 Flag” was created as a symbol of “opposition to equal civil rights for our fellow Black citizens.”

The Mississippi Ordinance of Secession clearly states and promotes the unequal treatment of Black people, using the “1894 Flag” as a symbol of oppression. Duncan encouraged believers to die to self in order to honor our neighbors.

“We are asking almost half the population of our State to salute a symbol that has (undeniably) been used for well over a century to indicate…

Christian Missionary Opens Up about Life in China amid the Coronavirus Pandemic

Christian Missionary Opens Up about Life in China amid the Coronavirus Pandemic

As China recovers from COVID-19, the lingering effects of the virus on the country and believers in China can still be felt. Recently, Christian Headlines was granted an exclusive interview with an underground missionary and resident of China to help explain the effects of the virus on the country and people of faith. Because China is a closed country to the gospel, we have withheld the missionary’s identity and the name of their missions organization out of an abundance of safety.

This interview has been edited for clarity and length.

What has life been like in China post-COVID-19?

China has been gradually returning to normal life with restrictions lifting across the country, but citizens are still very wary of a potential second wave of coronavirus cases, particularly in the original epicenter, Wuhan. As the country opens for business again, China has had to be much more vigilant about international visitors and their own nationals returning home with the virus.

To ensure there isn’t a second outbreak at the epicenter, China is now testing all 11 million residents of Wuhan. While a prudent course of action, long lines of residents queuing to be tested show little regard for physical distancing.

Travel restrictions inside China are gradually lifted. There are still partial lockdowns in some areas, counties and villages, but the situation varies from place to place. In some…

Senate Democrats Block Policing Reform Bill

Senate Democrats Block Policing Reform Bill

Senate Democrats blocked a policing reform bill this week.

According to CBN News, the vote was 55-45. The Justice Act, which was proposed by Republican senators, needed 60 votes to pass.

“My hope, my prayer, is that after this bill fails today … we can start on the path of bipartisanship,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said.

The proposal comes after weeks of protesting and demonstrations calling for a change in police policy and acts of racism.

The proposal would create a national database of police use-of-force incidents, restrict police chokeholds, and develop training practices and commissions to study policing and racism.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) said he was disappointed that the bill did not advance and challenged Democratic senators to propose changes to the bill.

“If you don’t think we’re right, make it better, don’t walk away,” Scott said.

He later tweeted that he offered Democratic senators the ability to make at least 20 amendments, but “they walked out.”

“Don’t let anyone convince you this was about debates or amendments. It’s about politics, and a refusal to find a solution,” he tweeted.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) said Democrats are purposely trying to “divide” the Senate and “fight a new civil war in our culture, day and night, without end.”

“Our voters sent us here to make things better,” he said. “To rebuild. To heal. But that’s not what we’re doing. No, for the last several weeks,…

The Battle of Little Bighorn: The eternal significance of present decisions

Little Bighorn Battlefield MT (USA)

On this day in 1876, US Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer was defeated at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. That’s all that most of us know about the event, but the back story is far more complex than the conflict.

According to a History article, the US government had been working for years to confine Native Americans to reservations. Then, in 1875, after gold was discovered in South Dakota’s Black Hills, the US Army ignored previous treaty agreements and invaded the region.

This betrayal led many Sioux and Cheyenne tribesmen to leave their reservations. By the late spring of 1876, more than ten thousand Native Americans had gathered in a camp along the Little Bighorn River, defying a US War Department order to return to their reservations or risk being attacked.

In mid-June, US soldiers advanced on the camp but were turned back. Gen. Alfred Terry then ordered Custer’s 7th Calvary to scout ahead for enemy troops. On the morning of June 25th, Custer drew near the Native American camp and chose to press on rather than wait for reinforcements.

At midday, his six hundred men entered the Little Bighorn Valley. As many as three thousand Native Americans responded. Within an hour, Custer and all of his soldiers were dead.

The death of Custer and his troops is not the only noteworthy military event that occurred today.

On this day in 1950, North Korea unleashed an attack southward across the 38th parallel. By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea’s behalf. The war would last for three years and cost nearly five million lives, more than half of whom were civilians. Almost forty thousand Americans died in Korea, while more than one hundred thousand were wounded.

The eternal significance of present decisions

With both the Battle of Little Bighorn and the Korean War, soldiers died in a cause they did not choose. Both Gen. Custer and his men were prosecuting a conflict…

Worship Leader, Activist Calls Out Social Media Sites for Censoring Praise, Worship Content

Worship Leader, Activist Calls Out Social Media Sites for Censoring Praise, Worship Content

Bethel worship leader turned activist Sean Feucht is calling out social media platforms for censoring his praise and worship related posts.

According to CBN News, Feucht took to Twitter to call out Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for promoting violent content of civil unrest but censoring his non-violent posts about worshipping God.

“While @Facebook @instagram @Twitter promote the content of violence, rioting & destruction, they are actively CENSORING worship, prayer, peaceful protest & anything going against their fear-mongering narrative,” Feucht wrote.

“My feed and many others is (sic) proof. #ChangeTheNarrative,” he asserted.

Feucht went on to post a screenshot that appears to show a notice from Instagram explain that his content had been removed for violating community guidelines. The story, he said, was “from a peaceful worship rally.”

“This is what we come to in America!” Feucht went on to exclaim. “Instagram is now classifying my WORSHIP videos as “harmful or false information”

“Religious Liberty? Freedom of Speech? Big Tech censorship?”…
