SBC’s Ronnie Floyd Says ‘Jesus Christ Is the Only Answer’ to Racial Inequity in America

SBC’s Ronnie Floyd Says ‘Jesus Christ Is the Only Answer’ to Racial Inequity in America

The president and CEO of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Executive Committee said George Floyd, who died after a white police officer pressed his knee into his neck, was “murdered” and asserted that Jesus is “the only answer” to racial inequality in America.

“We have witnessed with our own eyes, in the streets of one of our major cities, a black man being murdered slowly and cruelly,” Ronnie Floyd said. Over the course of a long eight minutes, George Floyd cried out for help and mercy while a white police officer continued to place his knee over this black man’s neck as his face was forced onto the pavement.

“The end result: George Floyd died in a cruel, demeaning, and needless way,” Floyd wrote in an op-ed for Baptist Press Tuesday.

George Floyd lost consciousness and later died after a Minneapolis police officer kneeled into the man’s neck. The officer, Derek Chauvin, has been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.

SBC president and CEO Floyd said he encourages Christians to “oppose racism.”

“Southern Baptists must not only be known to stand for the sanctity of human life, but we must also be known to stand for the dignity of all human life regardless of the color of skin.”

He also said politics wouldn’t be enough to eliminate racism.

“Jesus Christ is the only answer to this problem, and we must start with ourselves….

Bible Is ‘More Than a Symbol’ or ‘Prop,’ American Bible Society Says in Bible Giveaway

Bible Is ‘More Than a Symbol’ or ‘Prop,’ American Bible Society Says in Bible Giveaway

The American Bible Society on Tuesday launched a free Bible giveaway and said God’s Word was “more than a symbol” or a “prop in a noisy news cycle,” one day after President Trump walked to St. John’s Episcopal Church and held up a Bible.

The article on the ministry’s website doesn’t mention Trump or even St. John’s, but it uses language that many on social media interpreted to reference Trump’s church visit. It was posted one day after the controversy.

“In this time of pandemic fear and social isolation, in this time of racial injustice and senseless violence, in this time of economic uncertainty and generational pain, we should be careful not to use the Bible as a political symbol, one more prop in a noisy news cycle,” wrote Whitney T. Kuniholm, a member of the senior leadership team at the American Bible Society.

“Because, more than ever,” he wrote, “we need to hear what’s true. ‘Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!’ (Amos 5:24 NIV). ‘Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me …’ Psalm 23:4 KJV).

It’s not the first time the American Bible Society has given Bibles away during a news cycle. Last year, the American Bible Society gave away more than 10,000 free Bibles following the release of Kanye West’s faith-centric…

The ‘Miracle of Dunkirk’ and the power of the one

Allied troops wait on the beach of Dunkirk for the rescue ships to take them to England, on June 4, 1940. Over three hundred thousand soldiers from Belgium, France and England were cut off from retreat on land by the German invasion and had to be evacuated in a heroic emergency sealift code-named Operation Dynamo.

The evacuation of Dunkirk ended on this day in 1940, saving 338,000 soldiers from the advancing Germans. It’s a modern-day miracle worth retelling.

In the early days of World War II, the German army was advancing through northern France. British troops stationed in the region were cut off from their French allies and trapped by the sea. By May 19, 1940, British commanders were considering the withdrawal of the entire British Expeditionary Force.

On May 26, they began to implement Operation Dynamo—the evacuation of Allied forces from Dunkirk. There were not enough military ships to transport the huge masses of men stranded near the beaches, however. So the British Admiralty called on all British citizens in possession of any seaworthy vessel to contribute their ships to the effort.

Hundreds of fishing boats, pleasure yachts, lifeboats, ferries, and other civilian ships of every type and size raced across the English Channel to Dunkirk in response. They braved mines, bombs, torpedoes, and ruthless airborne attacks by the German Luftwaffe.

The Royal Air Force successfully countered the Luftwaffe, which saved the operation. However, German pilots bombarded the beach, destroying numerous vessels and pursuing ships within a few miles of the English coast.

Since the Dunkirk harbor was bombed out of use, smaller civilian vessels had to ferry soldiers from the beaches to warships waiting at sea. For nine days, the evacuation continued. The Allied commanders and rank-and-file soldiers expected utter annihilation, but the operation succeeded beyond their greatest expectations.

In the days following this successful evacuation,

Christian Church Network Helps Provide 750,000 Meals to Families Impacted by COVID-19

Christian Church Network Helps Provide 750,000 Meals to Families Impacted by COVID-19

The Slavic Gospel Association has helped churches in the former Soviet Union provide some 750,000 meals to families impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Slavic Gospel Association, which serves over 6,350 churches in Asia and Eastern Europe, was able to raise thousands of dollars for the meals, according to The Christian Post.

“The churches recognize that while this pandemic is a very difficult situation where many people are suffering, it probably represents the greatest opportunity for the proclamation of the Gospel since the [Berlin] Wall came down,” SGA President Michael Johnson told the Christian Post. “The churches and the church workers are highly motivated to do what they can to minister to the people in those communities, both in word and deed.”

“These people are already doing the work,” Johnson added. “What we are trying to do is connect people here with the churches over there and help them to purchase resources locally so they can distribute food, medicine, and other items.” SGA President

Johnson said volunteers are feeding people who are in desperate need, including some who say they haven’t eaten in days.

“Those church workers have such compassion in their countries and they meet these people at their point of need,” Johnson said. “And many of these people are at the end of their ropes.

“They are really meeting those needs. Many…

Retired Police Chief Killed in Violent Theft while Protecting Friend’s Pawn Shop

Retired Police Chief Killed in Violent Theft while Protecting Friend’s Pawn Shop

Retired St. Louis police captain, David Dorn, was killed by violent looters on Tuesday while he tried to defend his friend’s pawn shop, according to the Christian Post.

Dorn regularly checked in on Lee’s Pawn Shop when alarms were set off. He was killed on a riotous night of looting in St. Louis following the death of George Floyd.

The Ethical Society of Police, a group representing black officers in St. Louis, confirmed his death: “One of the people murdered last night was a retired St. Louis City Captain. He was murdered by looters at a pawnshop. He was the type of brother that would’ve given his life to save them if he had to. Violence is not the answer, whether it’s a citizen or officer. RIP Captain!”

A poster, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, was hung outside of the shop that read, “Y’all killed a black man because ‘they’ killed a black man??? Rest in peace.”

CBN News reported that the 77-year-old Dorn served his community for 38 years. He joined the police academy in 1969 and retired in October 2007. He was a joyful civil servant and mentored young people.

“A true public servant,” said former St Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch. “Protecting & serving all the way to the end. None of us who knew you are surprised you went out fighting at Lee’s Pawn this morning. God speed my friend.”

President Trump also voiced his…

Drew Brees Apologizes for American Flag Comments: I ‘Completely Missed the Mark’

Drew Brees Apologizes for American Flag Comments: I ‘Completely Missed the Mark’

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees apologized Thursday for earlier comments about “disrespecting the flag,” saying he “completely missed the mark” and stands with the black community in the “fight against systemic racial injustice and police brutality.”

Brees’ apology on Instagram came one day after he gave an interview to Yahoo Finance and was asked how the NFL should respond to players kneeling during the national anthem following the ongoing protests.

“I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America,” Brees said in the interview. “… What I feel when the national anthem is played and when I look at the flag of the United States, I envision my two grandfathers, who fought for this country during World War II, one in the army, and one in the Marine Corps, both risking their lives to protect our country and to try to make our country and this world a better place.”

The national anthem, he said during the interview, “shows unity.”

“It shows that we are all in this together, we can all do better,” Brees said. “And that we are all part of the solution.”

In the Yahoo Finance interview, Brees also said, “God created us all equal and I think that we all have a responsibility to love each other and to respect each other.”

His remarks on the flag drew pushback from teammates and black leaders. The…

Tennessee Police Officer Prays with Protestor during Rally following the Death of George Floyd

Tennessee Police Officer Prays with Protestor during Rally following the Death of George Floyd

A Nashville police officer prayed with a protester Saturday during a peaceful demonstration.

According to CBN News, Officer Garren Hoskins was working at the protest when he heard a man preaching.

“As he talked, I kind of talked back with him and carried on a casual conversation. There was a brief moment where he stopped and was just standing there. I felt an opportunity as a police officer and a person so I asked him, ‘Would you like to pray?’ He put his sign down, looked at me, and said, ‘Absolutely.’”

A bystander took a photo of the two men praying together.

“He had a great prayer about equal rights – all men treated equal under God, and it was very touching,” Hoskins said.

“At the same time, that gentleman was such a nice guy. I believe it created a solidarity there between him expressing his freedom of speech and me there as a police officer and that’s something the world needs to see.”

Hoskins said the moment stands in contrast to the violent protests across the country.

“You can see rioting and looting in all cities across the United States, but I think there are things happening outside of those images that are real and powerful and my image happened to be caught at that time,” he said.

Minneapolis Christian University to Hold Memorial Service for George Floyd

Minneapolis Christian University to Hold Memorial Service for George Floyd

A Minneapolis-based Christian university will be paying tribute to George Floyd in a memorial service on Thursday.

“North Central University is honored to have been asked to serve as the location for the Minneapolis funeral service for Mr. George Floyd,” North Central University announced in a statement on Tuesday.

“As a Christian university situated in the heart of Minneapolis, we strive to be good citizens and good neighbors. Our hope is that our sanctuary will provide a space of welcome and warmth for Mr. Floyd’s loved ones and their guests during this time of remembrance and worship,” the statement continued.

The Christian Post reports that the memorial service will be held between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM and will be live-streamed online and on local media channels.

Floyd’s eulogy will be given by civil rights activist and founder and president of the National Action Network, Rev. Al Sharpton.

The university statement noted that the memorial service will be “a private event for the family, friends, and invitees of the Floyd family.”

“Preregistered and verified attendees” will solely be granted admittance.

A funeral service will also be held for Floyd early next week. Benjamin Crump, Floyd’s family attorney, announced on Monday that a funeral service – which former boxing champion Floyd Mayweather has offered to cover the expenses for – will be held for Floyd on…

Stadium-sized asteroid is headed toward our planet: Redeeming the only day we have

Asteroid, illustration.

NASA is tracking five asteroids headed toward Earth over the next few days. The largest is 1,100 feet wide, roughly the size of a stadium.

It’s expected to be nearest to Earth on June 6. However, the closest it’s projected to get is 3.16 million miles away.

Three of the other four asteroids are the size of an airplane; the fourth is the size of a house. However, they will not impact us, either. The house-sized asteroid will get the closest at 1.83 million miles from Earth.

I suspect you already knew these space rocks pose no threat to our planet. If they did, you would not be reading about them first in this article. They would be making global news along with the COVID-19 pandemic and George Floyd’s death.

Since they will miss our planet by a wide margin, their approach is interesting but not compelling.

We measure the significance of what we encounter by the degree to which it affects us. This is only natural; we could not possibly digest all the information that is available to us over the course of even a single day. So we filter the news by relevance, focusing on that which matters personally.

Even now, you’re probably wondering when I’ll get to the point. So here it is: unlike the imminent visit of four asteroids, the imminent return of our Lord is vitally relevant to us, whether we acknowledge this fact or not.

Redeeming the only day we have

When the risen Christ ascended into heaven, two angels assured his followers, “This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). Jesus said of his return, “concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only” (Matthew 24:36).

As a result, he warned us, “Stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming” (v. 42).

If you knew that a stadium-sized asteroid would slam into our planet tomorrow,…

58 Percent of Americans Believe Moral Truth ‘Is Up to Each Individual,’ New Poll Finds

58 Percent of Americans Believe Moral Truth ‘Is Up to Each Individual,’ New Poll Finds

Nearly six in 10 Americans believe “identifying moral truth is up to each individual,” while barely four in 10 say God is the basis of truth, according to a new survey.

The findings are part of the American Worldview Inventory and were released by George Barna, director of research at the cultural research center at Arizona Christian University.

A total of 58 percent of U.S. adults agreed that “identifying moral truth is up to each individual; there are no moral absolutes that apply to everyone, all the time,” according to the survey. Surprisingly, 48 percent of adults identified as born-again Christians agreed with the statement.

The survey, released last month, was based on interviews with 2,000 U.S. adults in January.

“We’re living in an America increasingly unmoored from its founding in biblical truth,” said Len Munsil, president of Arizona Christian University. “Even in the most basic questions of life, like how we make moral choices, we’re choosing to lean completely on our own understanding to decide what’s right and wrong.”

When Americans were asked “what is the basis of truth,” 42 percent responded “God,” 16 percent “inner certainty” and 15 percent “scientific proof.” The other answers included tradition (5 percent), public agreement (4 percent), “there is no truth” (5 percent) and “don’t know” (13…
