Nancy Pelosi Reads from Bible, Implores President Trump to Be a ‘Healer-in-Chief’

President Trump’s visit to the historical St. John Episcopal Church Monday evening was met with criticism by many, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

As Christian Headlines previously reported, President Trump visited the church after condemning the violent riots and looting across the U.S. in a speech at the White House’s Rose Garden.

Trump’s visit to St. John’s was harshly criticized because officials were reported to have used tear gas and flash grenades on nearby protestors in order to clear the area for the President to walk to the church.

At the Capitol Building Tuesday morning, holding a Bible in her own hands, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi criticized Trump’s visit to the historic church, The Hill reports.

“Peaceful demonstrators in front of the White House were beaten — some people came out and beat them so they could clear the area so the president could come out and go forward. What is that?” she asked. “That has no place, and it’s time for us to do away with that, a time to heal.”

Pelosi then urged President Trump to “follow the lead of so many other presidents before him, to be a Healer-in-Chief and not a fanner of the flame.”

Pelosi then referred to past presidents in related circumstances, including former President George H.W. Bush, who stressed for unity following the Rodney King riots, and former President Barrack Obama’s call for healing…

Amazon Delivery Driver Prays for High-Risk Baby

Amazon Delivery Driver Prays for High-Risk Baby

In the middle of a busy day, Amazon delivery driver Monica Salinas stopped to say a prayer for a baby at high risk for the coronavirus.

“There was a note and it said their baby’s food was essential, and every time I see that note, it just touches my heart,” Salinas said, according to The Christian Post.  “I just stopped to do what my heart told me to do, to say a prayer for the baby and for the parents because that’s got to be very painful for all of them to see their baby hurt and struggle. I just prayed that they can make it through another day, one day at a time.”

Derek and Raquel Pearson’s son, Lucas, is less than a year old and was diagnosed with a heart condition, making him at risk for respiratory complications. He also requires thickeners in order to digest milk. His parents have isolated themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic in order to protect their son.

“We really depend on getting all of these supplies online so we don’t have to go out to the store and bring a virus home,” said Raquel. “We just want to minimize exposure to coronavirus.”

Raquel noticed Salinas stop by the door and bow her head. At first, she didn’t know what she was doing until Salinas made the sign of the cross after praying. The delivery driver told the Catholic News Agency that she prayed, “Dearest God, please protect this family through your Precious Blood, and this baby, so that he may grow to…

Nigerian Christians Call on Officials to Work for the Release of an Abducted Bishop

Nigerian Christians Call on Officials to Work for the Release of an Abducted Bishop

The Christian Association of Nigeria issued a statement calling on government officials to work to gain the release of the Bishop Joseph Masin who serves as the chairman of the Nasarawa State unit, after gunmen abducted him from his home last week.

According to CBN News, Masin’s captors rode motorcycles and snatched him from his home in the state capital of Lafia last Wednesday. According to the Nigeria news outlet This Day, they have demanded 20 million Nigerian Naira, which is close to $52,000, as a ransom.

In the statement, the Christian Association of Nigeria appeals to the government for help because they have no options to pursue his captors on their own. The statement said, “Since we have no police of our own and we are trying as much as possible to avoid chaotic situations, we are placing a demand on the federal government and the Nasarawa State Government to ensure the safety and immediate release of Bishop Masin before it is too late.”

The statement also reminded leaders that this is the second time a Christian Association of Nigeria leader has been kidnapped this year. They said, “We will not accept losing another state Chairman like we lost the late CAN Chairman, Rev. Lawan Andimi, in Adamawa State, who was gruesomely murdered by terrorists while our security agencies appeared powerless, helpless, and de-robbed of their armor.”

How to buy your own village: The reason we retreat

SpaceX Falcon 9, with NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken in the Crew Dragon capsule, lifts off from Pad 39-A at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla., Saturday, May 30, 2020.

One of the most popular tweets in recent days was sent by comedian Andy Milonakis: “Congratulations to the Astronauts that left Earth today. Good choice.” With the global pandemic, economic crisis, and riots across the nation, the sentiment is understandable.

If you’re not an astronaut but are looking for a place to get away, you might consider buying your own village. That way, you can be in charge not only of your house but of your neighbors as well.

This may seem a little unrealistic, but for $7.3 million, the town of Satra Brunn in Sweden can be yours.

The village dates back to 1700, when a doctor named Samuel Skragge discovered its water source that was reputed to have healing qualities. He built a town around the natural spring, including a hospital, church, houses, and more. Over the years, tourists began to visit and build summer homes on the land. The spring is one of only seven in Sweden awarded the highest purity designation.

A bishop bought the homes and grounds in the 1740s, then left it a few years later to one of Sweden’s top schools, Uppsala University. The university sold it in 2002 to sixteen local businessmen; they have used it as a venue for a spa and various events. They added a bottling business in 2015.

Now the entire village is for sale. You would own the sixty-acre town, its dwellings, and businesses along with eighty-four acres of undeveloped land. Since it is registered as a limited liability company, there are no restrictions for foreign buyers.

The reason we retreat

Retreating from the chaos of our fallen world is a biblical principle. Jesus often spent time alone with his Father (cf. Mark 1:35; Luke 9:18). Mark 6 records that he once said to his disciples, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place…

Do the Boston Tea Party and Jesus’ cleansing of the temple justify violence? John Lewis and Jesus show us the way forward

Saks Fifth Avenue surrounded its flagship Manhattan store with razor wire yesterday to keep thieves from stealing expensive merchandise. While protests across the US were more peaceful last night, the Associated Press announced this morning that at least 9,300 people have been arrested since George Floyd’s death.

Yesterday, I made the claim that violence is not the right response to violence. I’ve seen two counter arguments we didn’t have space to consider in my article.

What George Washington thought of the Boston Tea Party

One is that violent protests are “as American as the Boston Tea Party.” New York Times columnist Charles Blow tweeted: “It is estimated that the Boston Tea Party, the riot that gave birth to this country, resulted in $1.7 million dollars (in today’s dollars) in property damage (tea). I’m just going to leave this right here for whoever needs to read it.”

W.D. Cooper. “Boston Tea Party.”, The History of North America. London: E. Newberry, 1789. Engraving. Plate opposite p. 58. Rare Book and Special Collections Division, Library of Congress. Public domain.

I’m not certain the Boston Tea Party was a riot (it was conducted by men in disguise under cover of darkness) or that it “gave birth to this country” (our origins are far more complex). George Washington voiced strong disapproval of the perpetrators’ “conduct in destroying the tea”; Benjamin Franklin insisted that the British be reimbursed for the lost tea and even offered to pay for it himself.

Columnist Joshua Lawson noted: “Though many witnessed the event’s aftermath, it was a moonlit, covert act completed in three hours. No harm came to the ships and crews . . . No violence or confrontations of any kind took place between the British soldiers, colonial patriots, or Tory loyalists that night.”

Except for the tea, the only property that was damaged was a single broken padlock on one of the ships, which was…

12 Marks of Bad Church Websites

When our church consulting teams hire “spies” to visit churches, we usually give them only the name and address of the church. We want them to see if the church has a website and if the website is actually attractive and helpful. Here are several problems our “spies” have found with websites.

  1. The church doesn’t have a website. It’s almost hard to believe today that a congregation has no Internet presence, but it does happen. A church without a website seems almost non-existent in a world where potential guests first turn to the Internet to learn about them.
  2. The website looks cheap or out of date. Ask some young people to critique your church’s site. If they tell you it’s not attractive, it’s probably not. You likely already know if the site was cheap.
  3. The site has no contact information. Maybe it’s just an oversight, or perhaps the church has no one to answer phones or respond to emails. Either way, the church has closed the door on a primary means of communication.
  4. The site provides no information about the services. Again, it’s almost unbelievable that a church would have a website with no service information. On the other hand, a church that thinks about only its own members probably sees no need to include service times (and, our experience is that the church with no service information on their site also doesn’t respond to requests for information).
  5. The information is out of date. It’s always nice to know the details about the church’s community-wide…

Franklin Graham Urges the Church to Pray amid Violent Protests following the Death of George Floyd

Franklin Graham Urges the Church to Pray amid Violent Protests following the Death of George Floyd

As violent protests ensue over the death of George Floyd, Evangelist Franklin Graham is calling for the church to pray.

Graham, who serves as president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association  (BGEA) and heads up humanitarian aid organization Samaritan’s Purse, stressed the importance of prayer in a Facebook post on Saturday.

“As Christians, the greatest weapon and the most powerful defense we have is prayer. Our country needs prayer in a critical way,” he asserted

Graham then called for churches to “have a special time of intercession for our nation in their Sunday morning services”, whether it was online or in person.

“Will you pray, and will you share this with your pastor?” he asked.

Graham continued, imploring the church to pray for peace, perspective, patience and an outpouring of God’s wisdom.

He wrote, “We need to pray for PEACE, because “’the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God’ (James 1:20).

“Pray for PERSPECTIVE, because ‘the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere’ (James 3:17).

“Pray for PATIENCE, because of God’s ‘kindness and forbearance and patience’ toward us all (Romans 2:4).

“And pray for an OUTPOURING of His wisdom and direction for our leaders and officials who are dealing with this…

Lecrae: America Needs Christians to ‘Put Aside Their Fears and Doubts’ amid Divisions

Lecrae: America Needs Christians to ‘Put Aside Their Fears and Doubts’ amid Divisions

Hip hop recording artist Lecrae is urging Christians to be the “hands and feet” of Jesus to help heal America’s divisions.

“My heart breaks but I’m not hopeless,” Lecrae wrote on his Instagram account Sunday. “I anticipate God raising up more people to put aside their fears and doubts.”

The post came the same day Lecrae posted an Instagram picture of himself at a protest alongside a written message, “‘Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, and plead the widow’s cause,’ (Isaiah 1:17).” In the picture, he was holding a sign reading, “Justice is a right not a privilege,” while wearing a shirt reading “11 Six” – a reference to Romans 1:16.

In his post addressing the church, Lecrae said Christians can help heal the nation.

“My mama marched in the 60s and 70s. She took me to my first protest as a child after Rodney King was beaten unjustly,” he wrote, referencing the 1991 police beating of a black man in Los Angeles. “I protested in Ferguson. I protested for justice of #mikebrown #freddiegray #tamirrice #ericgarner #sandrabland #philandocastile and others over the last 4 years. Here we are again. Violence and mayhem did not bring their lives back or bring justice. We need real plans. We need more than tweets. We need solidarity. We need the walls around this proverbial Jericho to fall.

“Yes…

Police and Protesters Hug, Shake Hands after Officers Take a Knee in a Show of Solidarity

Police and Protesters Hug, Shake Hands after Officers Take a Knee in a Show of Solidarity

All 60-plus police officers in Fayetteville, N.C., took a knee Monday to show solidarity with protesters in what has become a law enforcement trend in recent days.

Police officers in big cities like Philadelphia, Atlanta, Detroit, New York City, Los Angeles and Phoenix, and smaller ones such as Chattanooga, Tenn., and Des Moines, Iowa, have also taken a knee in the past two days.

The Fayetteville Police Department explained its action on Twitter.

“As a show of understanding the pain that is in our community and our nation regarding equality, the #FayPD took a knee to show that we also stand for justice for everyone,” the department said in a Tweet. “We are committed to listening and treating everyone with dignity and respect. #LoveONE.”

WTVD reported the incident ended with “hugs and hand shakes between the officers and protesters.” Some protesters cried, the Raleigh News & Observer reported.

The rally was protesting the death of George Floyd, who was killed after a Minneapolis officer kneeled on his neck. Two autopsies,…

35 Black Liberty University Alumni Call for Jerry Falwell, Jr.’s Resignation

35 Black Liberty University Alumni Call for Jerry Falwell, Jr.’s Resignation

Thirty-five Black alumni of Liberty University are calling on university President Jerry Falwell Jr. to step down from his role after he tweeted a photo of a person in blackface.

According to Christianity Today, Falwell tweeted that he was “adamantly opposed” to an order from Gov. Ralph Northam that required that masks be worn inside all retail stores, on public transportation and any other indoor places with other people.

“If I am ordered to wear a mask, I will reluctantly comply, but only if this picture of Governor Blackface himself is on it,” Falwell tweeted.

His tweet included a picture of a face mask bearing a photo of a person in blackface and another in a Ku Klux Klan costume.

Last year Christian Headlines reported that Northam admitted that he was one of the two men in the photograph that was published in a medical school yearbook about 35 years ago.

In response to Falwell’s tweet, 35 faith leaders and former student-athletes sent an open letter to Falwell, saying they would stop donating to the university and stop encouraging faith leaders to speak at the school. The letter said Falwell’s comments “have repeatedly violated and misrepresented” Christian views.

“You have belittled staff, students and parents, you have defended inappropriate behaviors of politicians, encouraged violence, and disrespected people of other faiths,” they wrote, advising…
