The kidnapped Lindbergh baby was found dead on this day: Loving children shows that we love God

Col. Charles A. Lindbergh and his wife Anne Morrow Lindbergh wear electrically-heated suits as they pose outside their plane at Grand Central Airport in Los Angeles on March 21, 1930. They made a one-stop flight to New York in record time.

The body of Charles Lindbergh’s kidnapped baby was found on this day in 1932, more than two months after he was stolen from his family’s mansion in Hopewell, New Jersey.

His father had become the first worldwide celebrity five years earlier when he flew The Spirit of St. Louis across the Atlantic. On March 1, Charles and his wife Anne discovered a ransom note in their twenty-month-old child’s empty room. The kidnapper had used a ladder to climb up to the open second-story window and had left muddy footprints in the room. The ransom note demanded $50,000.

The crime captured the nation’s attention. Even Al Capone offered his help from prison (though it was conditioned on his release). Investigators found nothing for three days, then a new letter arrived demanding $70,000.

On April 2, kidnappers gave instructions for dropping off the money. Then they indicated that the baby was on a boat called Nelly off the coast of Massachusetts. An exhaustive search found no sign of the boat or the child, however.

On May 12, a renewed search of the area near the Lindbergh mansion found the baby’s body. He had been killed the night of the kidnapping and was found less than a mile from the home. The heartbroken family donated the mansion to charity and moved away.

Two years later, a marked bill from the ransom turned up. It was tracked to a German immigrant named Bruno Hauptmann. When his home was searched, investigators found $13,000 of the Lindbergh ransom money.

Hauptmann claimed that a friend had given him the money to hold and argued that he had no connection to the crime. The trial that followed was once again a national story. In addition to the ransom money, the main evidence was testimony from…

Benjamin Netanyahu Suggests Israeli Citizens Wear Sensors to Prevent Close Contact as Country Reopens

Benjamin Netanyahu Suggests Israeli Citizens Wear Sensors to Prevent Close Contact as Country Reopens

As Israel begins to gradually reopen, some controversial measures are being proposed in the continuing fight against COVID-19.

CBN News reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has suggested the placement of sensors on people – including and with emphasis on children – in order to prevent close contact between Israeli citizens.

In a speech last week, Netanyahu shared that he “spoke with our heads of technology in order to find measures Israel is good at, such as sensors.”

The sensors, he noted, would be activated when people got too close to one another.

“Every person, every kid – I want it on kids first – would have a sensor that would sound an alarm when you get too close, like the ones on cars,” Netanyahu added, according to the Jerusalem Post.

“I don’t know if this is possible,” he continued, “We’re checking this, we’re trying this, but we can through different means guard [against] the transmission of corona.”

In a statement to Ynet, cyber resilience expert Einat Meron noted several concerns about the sensor’s function on humans.

“Theoretically, I get the idea behind it. But although such distance-sensitive microchips exist in vehicles, it is different in humans.”

She continued, “a beeping sound telling me I got close to someone is not enough. Who says it will change anything? I would have gotten closer either…

The llama who is helping fight COVID-19: The future significance of present faithfulness

Llama herd in barren landscape.

Winter is a four-year-old chocolate-colored llama who lives on a farm in Belgium. She is also one of the possible heroes in the fight against COVID-19.

Llamas produce antibodies that are especially suited to fighting viruses. Humans produce only one kind of antibody, while llamas produce two types. One is much smaller, only 25 percent the size of human antibodies. The smaller version can access tinier pockets and crevices on spike proteins—the proteins that allow viruses to break into host cells and infect us. This makes these smaller antibodies more effective in neutralizing viruses.

Llamas’ antibodies are also easily manipulated to be linked or fused with other antibodies, including human antibodies.

This genetic characteristic is not unique to llamas—all camelids share it, including alpacas, guanacos, and dromedaries. Sharks have these smaller antibodies as well. However, as one researcher notes, they “are not a great experimental model, and are a lot less cuddly than llamas.”

In 2016, scientists looked to llamas to find a smaller antibody that could broadly neutralize many kinds of coronaviruses. They picked Winter, injecting her with spike proteins from the virus that caused the 2002-03 SARS epidemic as well as MERS, then tested her blood. They found two potent antibodies that each fought separately against both viruses.

When the new coronavirus began making headlines, they tested Winter’s antibodies against it as well. They found the same results—her antibodies effectively inhibited the coronavirus in cell cultures. They published their results in a scientific journal last week.

The researchers hope this antibody approach can eventually be used to protect people from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. While it would work immediately, its effects would not be permanent, requiring additional injections in a month or two. Researchers are moving toward clinical trials, though actual therapies for…

Fund Set Up to Benefit Family of Darrin Patrick

Fund Set Up to Benefit Family of Darrin Patrick

(RNS) — A fund has been set up to benefit the family of the late Darrin Patrick, a megachurch pastor and author who died Thursday (May 7).

Patrick, 49, left behind his wife, Amie, and four children.

A link to the fund can be found on the website of Charleston, South Carolina-based Seacoast Church and at GiveSendGo. Patrick was a teaching pastor at the church.

“All the funds collected will go to the family,” said Greg Surratt, founding pastor of Seacoast and a longtime friend of Patrick and his family. Surrat, the founding pastor of Seacoast and longtime friend, had just returned from St. Louis, where he spent time comforting Patrick’s family.

Since the news broke of Patrick’s death, Surratt said, churches and church members have been rallying around the family.

Amie Patrick posted a message on her late husband’s Twitter account, expressing thanks to friends and supporters.

“Your kind remembrances of him, photos, stories and encouraging words are healing to our souls,” she wrote.

In the days after getting the call about Patrick’s passing, Surratt said he has been through a range of emotions — grief and anger, sadness and guilt.

“I have cried more in the last 24 hours than I have in the last 24 years,” he said.

When Patrick was fired in 2016 from the Journey Church in St. Louis, Surratt helped lead him through a restoration process that lasted for several years. That led eventually to…

Canadian Catholic Bishop Funds Research for a Safe and Efficient Coronavirus Vaccine

Canadian Catholic Bishop Funds Research for a Safe and Efficient Coronavirus Vaccine

VATICAN CITY (RNS) — As countries around the world slowly begin to reduce social distancing restrictions, the need for a vaccine against the COVID-19 disease becomes increasingly urgent. One Canadian Catholic archbishop has decided to make a financial contribution to a lab that is working to find a preventive cure.

“This is a time when listening to health officials and medical experts is our Christian responsibility to care for the common good,” Archbishop J. Michael Miller of the Archdiocese of Vancouver, Canada, told the news outlet of his diocese in an article published April 27.

“May the search for COVID-19 solutions also be a moment of solidarity, of collaboration, and of growing together as a visible sign to the world of the healing and reconciliation so needed right now,” he said.

Miller has chosen to financially support a research facility looking for a coronavirus vaccine, led by the immunologist Wilfred Jefferies at the Michael Smith Laboratories of the University of British Columbia.

Jefferies has almost 30 years of experience in vaccines and previously worked on bettering the efficacy of vaccines against other diseases, such as Influenzas and Smallpox. He was also part of the scientific team that addressed CoV-SARS from 2002 to 2004.

In February, his laboratory began working to create a vaccine to fend off the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the…

What makes this year’s Gerber baby unique: Three steps that can change a life

Magnolia Earl is the 2020 Gerber Baby. I can see why the company chose her—the one-year-old is adorable.

Her mother agrees: “Magnolia has brought so much joy to everyone she meets. Her personality is beyond happy and joyful.” Here’s the historic part of her story: she is the first adopted baby to be named the Gerber company’s spokesbaby, a tradition that dates back to 1928.

You may not have been adopted by your parents or adopted your children, but here’s a theological fact: if Jesus is your Lord, you have been adopted by your Father in heaven. In fact, this was the reason he sent his Son into the world: “to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons” (Galatians 4:5).

Magnolia Earl’s parents chose her to be their daughter. Your Father chose you to be his child (John 1:12).

He loves every person on our planet as much as he loves you. Now he is calling you to do the same.

Why Emmett Till’s memorial sign had to be replaced

In yesterday’s Daily Article, we focused on the Ahmaud Arbery shooting tragedy, looking at racism with a focus on what God will do to give us pure hearts of love for each other. Since writing that article, I have updated my website white paper on this issue (read it here). I also conducted a podcast interview with a very dear friend, now published as “What does it mean to be black in America today? A conversation with Tyrone Johnson” (listen to it here).

Today, let’s focus on what you and I can do to partner with our Father in making a practical difference on this urgent issue. Writer and historian Jemar Tisby encourages three steps: awareness, relationships, and commitment

We’ll begin with awareness

In Acts 10, Simon Peter was shown a vision of “all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air” (v. 12). He was told to “kill and eat” but refused, citing his commitment to Jewish dietary restrictions (vv….

I Still Believe Viewers Are ‘Coming to Faith in Christ’ while Watching at Home, Director Says

I Still Believe Viewers Are ‘Coming to Faith in Christ’ while Watching at Home, Director Says

Releasing a movie in the middle of a pandemic wasn’t Jon Erwin’s preference.

But even he can see the irony in releasing a film about faith in the middle of trials – I Still Believe – in the midst of such a trial.

“Life is full of things that you can’t control and things that don’t go according to plan,” Erwin, the film’s co-director, told Christian Headlines. “The whole theme of the movie is ‘I Still Believe even when I can’t see.’ It’s sort of fitting.”

I Still Believe – now on DVD, Blu-ray and digital home video – released in theaters March 13 just as the spread of the coronavirus was accelerating. It finished No. 1 on opening night and No. 3 for the weekend, but one week later, theaters were closed. By comparison, Erwin’s 2018 hit I Can Only Imagine was in theaters 17 weeks.

Still, I Still Believe has had a major impact in the middle of the pandemic, as families and individuals search for entertainment during a lockdown.

“We keep hearing stories of people coming to faith in Christ or being encouraged by the movie or finding hope while watching the movie,” Erwin said. “I’m glad we got the movie out.”

I Still Believe tells the story of Christian singer Jeremy Camp’s marriage to his first wife, Melissa, who died of ovarian cancer. Camp then penned the song, I Still Believe.

Erwin hopes churches and families take advantage of…

Christian Families Summoned, Beaten and Threatened with Death in Chhattisgarh, India

Christian Families Summoned, Beaten and Threatened with Death in Chhattisgarh, India

HYDERABAD, India, May 11, 2020 (Morning Star News) – Animists in central India last week told five Christian families they would lose their harvest lands unless they returned to their tribal religion and beat them when they refused, sources said.

When the families answered a summons to a meeting with Salhephal village leaders in Bastar District, Chhattisgarh state on Tuesday (May 5), they found the tribal elders estimating the value of their lands, pastor Sirisguda Ramdhar told Morning Star News. The Christians had forbidden a tribal animist leader, Dulla Poyami, to perform tribal worship on their land, he said.

“The village leaders told the Christians, ‘You are not partaking in our tribal rituals, and so we cannot allow you to profit from your agricultural lands,’” Pastor Ramdhar told Morning Star News.

The Christians told them the lands were registered in their names, and that they were working hard to earn their bread, he said. “We follow our faith but have never been a burden on this village or to our kinsmen – you cannot snatch away our lands,” they told the tribal elders, according to the pastor.

“Even before they spoke any word further, the elders stood up and stormed at Christians Madda Poyami and Badda Poyami,” he said.

They began beating the two Christians, and a mob of at least 60 people soon gathered around them and the Christian families,…

Court Lets Kentucky Churches Meet Again: If Home Depot Can Open, So Can Houses of Worship

Court Lets Kentucky Churches Meet Again: If Home Depot Can Open, So Can Houses of Worship

Kentucky churches won the right to meet in-person during the coronavirus pandemic after three federal courts in two days ruled against an order by the Kentucky governor.

The March 19 order by Gov. Andy Beshear and state officials bans mass gatherings, including faith-based ones, but carves out multiple exceptions, including ones for factories and grocery stores.

U.S. District Judge Gregory F. Van Tatenhove issued a temporary restraining order on Friday preventing Kentucky officials from “enforcing the prohibition on mass gatherings” in churches and faith-based gatherings as long as the groups “adhere to applicable social distancing and hygiene guidelines.”

“If social distancing is good enough for Home Depot and Kroger, it is good enough for in-person religious services which, unlike the foregoing, benefit from constitutional protection,” wrote Van Tatenhove, who was nominated by President George W. Bush.

The lawsuit was brought by First Liberty Institute and two other law firms on behalf of Tabernacle Baptist Church of Nicholasville, Ky.

“The unexplained breadth of the ban on religious services, together with its haven for numerous secular exceptions, cannot co-exist with a society that places religious freedom in a place of honor in the Bill of Rights: The First Amendment,” Van Tatenhove wrote.

On Saturday, the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals issued…
