President Trump, Vice President Pence Will Host Virtual National Day of Prayer Events

For the first time ever, the National Day of Prayer will meet online instead of in-person because of coronavirus shutdowns across the nation.

Marking its 69th year of observance, the National Day of Prayer 2020 has the potential to be the largest prayer “gathering” in American history as millions of people will be praying together in online events, CBN News reports.

The first Thursday in May was named a National Day of Prayer by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, revising the law that was initially recognized by President Truman in 1962.

Typically, people would gather in over 60,000 local events to pray for America.

A Thursday evening livestream on Pray.com will feature Vice President Mike Pence along with Pastor Jack Graham, Pastor Greg Laurie, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, William Franklin Graham III, and Dr. Tony Evans at 7:00 pm Eastern/4:00 pm Pacific.

“Our nation needs prayer now more than ever, and so it is fitting that we gather on this day to remind us that we should seek the Almighty God every day in prayer,” said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Christian leaders are stressing unity now more than ever amid the current crisis.

“For many years, we’ve come together on the National Day of Prayer to lift up our country in prayer,” Dr. Jack Graham said.

“Although we can’t gather in our nation’s capital this year due to the pandemic, we have a unique opportunity to…

Lonely? Join the crowd. – Denison Forum

Monarch butterflies gather on top of flowers at the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, near the town of Chincua, Mexico.

Recently, Nature on PBS released some breathtaking footage of Monarch Butterflies awakening from their winter rest in a forest deep in Mexico.  Mysteriously, millions of them show up in this forest every fall to escape the harsh winters of their northern habitat.  They huddle together in this Mexican forest for warmth and rest. Millions of them.

The footage was taken by a drone cleverly disguised as a hummingbird.  It was designed in such a way to not disturb or put at risk any of the butterflies it came near.  And, since Monarch Butterflies and hummingbird are friends in nature, this “hummingbird” is not seen as a threat by the awakening Monarchs.  In a three-minute video you’ll see a butterfly actual land on and take flight from the wing of the “spy.”

There’s something about aging that creates a fascination in many of us about hummingbirds and butterflies.  I regularly fill my hummingbird feeders just to get a glimpse occasionally as one stops in for a quick snack.  I plant bushes like Lantana and Buddleia that attract butterflies.  But, seeing the Nature footage of this incredible community of butterflies coming to life and beginning their northern migration was unlike anything I have seen.

It reminds me a little of the “coming to life” that I see going on in my community. Most of us have been “sheltering in place” for several weeks now.  Not unlike the butterflies in the video, we have found safety in a season of sheltering. But various communities and states are beginning to announce relaxation of quarantine-like restrictions.  My hairstylist-daughter starts work again today with a schedule that makes you tired just to look at. Most of us are ready to migrate back to some kind of normalcy.

These past several weeks have taught me how valuable community is.  Yes, I have been…

With Caution and Concern, Catholic Masses Scheduled to Resume in Italy

With Caution and Concern, Catholic Masses Scheduled to Resume in Italy

VATICAN CITY (RNS) — Italian authorities on Thursday (May 7) gave the go-ahead for public Masses starting May 18, after the government and Catholic bishops struggled to find an accord that would ensure safety measures amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A protocol allowing Catholic faithful to attend Mass was signed Thursday by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte; the president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference (Cei), Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti; and the Italian minister of the Interior.

“The protocol is the fruit of a profound collaboration and synergy between the government, the Scientific and Technical Committee and Cei, in which each did his part responsibly,” Bassetti said during a news conference after the signing of the document.

For the first time since March 9, when the Italian government enacted a nationwide lockdown to limit the spread of the pandemic, Catholic faithful will be able to attend Mass with priests in places of worship.

The protocol specifies how churches must be sanitized and the faithful must be socially distanced to prevent contagions. Depending on the size of the place of worship, the number of people in attendance must be limited by volunteers at the entrance. Parishes and dioceses must also inform churchgoers about the safety measures in place.

“The required safety measures in the text present the appropriate methods and modalities to ensure the reopening of…

A celestial Mother’s Day gift: How to go ‘through’ hard times

If you’re looking for something unusual to give your mother this Sunday, you might consider a gift that is truly celestial: Christie’s auction house is selling a twenty-nine-pound lump of moon rock for $2.5 million.

The rock, technically called NWA 12691, was found two years ago in the Sahara Desert, where it probably crash-landed during an ancient meteor shower. It is exceedingly rare: less than 1,500 lunar meteorites have been discovered over the years, just enough to fit inside a small car. NWA 12691 is the fifth-largest piece of the moon on earth, dwarfing even those returned by Apollo astronauts.

“We should always think of helping others”

You don’t need to spend $2.5 million, however, to give someone a gift they will truly appreciate. Thousands of American graduates are writing the slogan “Gowns 4 Good” on their mortarboards after donating their gowns to healthcare workers to use as personal protective equipment in fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

Gowns 4 Good is the name of a charity begun three weeks ago by Nathaniel Moore, a frontline physician assistant in Vermont. He is asking graduates to donate their gowns to more than seventy-five thousand frontline responders. Such gowns worn backwards, with the zippered opening in the rear and the high collar in front, meet the CDC requirements for covering the body.

Anderson High School senior Teyaja Jones, right, poses in her cap and gown and a bandana face cover, Tuesday, May 5, 2020, in Austin, Texas.

On the theme of selfless service, consider Galina Yakovleva. As a child during the World War II siege of Leningrad, she learned to make the best of fearful times. Today, she’s using these lessons as she delivers food and supplies to needy people locked down because of the pandemic.

The eighty-year-old drives a white minivan every day through the streets of St. Petersburg. She was helping others for a decade before the pandemic struck and continues to serve…

National Day of Prayer, Reshaped By Pandemic, Includes Interfaith and Online Events

National Day of Prayer, Reshaped By Pandemic, Includes Interfaith and Online Events

(RNS) — The National Day of Prayer, like most events amid the coronavirus, will have a different look this year as it is marked on Thursday (May 7).

Now in its 69th year, the observance — often predominated by evangelical Christians gathering in public places — will feature interfaith and even international voices on computer screens and cellphones.

For the first time, Religions for Peace USA has organized a National Interfaith Prayer Service for Healing & Hope via Facebook and Zoom.

“Of course, we do pray separately in our own religious communities but it’s also important for us to come together to pray together and uplift our common humanity and pray for everyone,” said Tarunjit Singh Butalia, executive director of Religions for Peace USA.

“Some of our own religious communities, ethnic and others who are poorer, have been in fact quite severely hit with the pandemic so we need to come together and pray for everyone because we’re only as secure as the very least among us,” he added.

Butalia said there will be a “prayer for the infected” that will be offered by a faith leader who has recovered from coronavirus and a “prayer for the dead and their families” offered by a faith leader who lost a close family member to the virus.

The online gathering is set to feature Sikh, Muslim, Buddhist, Zoroastrian, Hindu, Jain, Unitarian Universalist, Christian…

‘Everything Starts with Jesus’: Pastor Tony Evans Encourages Unity Through Christ amid Uncertain Times

‘Everything Starts with Jesus’: Pastor Tony Evans Encourages Unity Through Christ amid Uncertain Times

Like most of us, Dr. Tony Evans is adapting to the new normal of social distancing, a result of the spread of COVID-19. He is preaching to a congregation that he deeply loves, but not from the pulpit where he normally stands, instead, he is preaching from his “home pulpit” … the middle of his living room.

Despite so much change, Dr. Evans is maintaining some familiarity by doing something he does best—going directly to the people and proclaiming God’s word.

In a rare sit-down interview, Dr. Evans graciously allows us access to his other new normal, walking through grief of losing his wife Louis.

This past December, Evans lost the woman he loved and cherished for nearly 50 years of marriage. “I’m taking one day at a time, it’s a roller coaster of uphills and downhills,” he told Christian Headlines.

You can tell in his voice that there is deep grief, yet at the same time, you sense a strength that only comes from having God at the center of his life. “I have to stay on track no matter the hill I’m on,” he asserted.

Having had the privilege of interviewing all four of Dr. Evans’ influential children, one thing they’ve all shared is that their father is a man of faith and resolute in his calling to carry out the Word of God.

Sharing a message during times of difficulty is something he has done consistently. As we find our country in this…

Chinese Newspaper Accuses Mike Pompeo of ‘Betraying Christianity with Lies,’ Christian Leaders Come to His Defense

Chinese Newspaper Accuses Mike Pompeo of ‘Betraying Christianity with Lies,’ Christian Leaders Come to His Defense

Several evangelical leaders have come to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s defense after a nationalist tabloid controlled by the Chinese Communist Party accused him of “betraying Christianity with lies” that COVID-19 broke out of China’s Wuhan lab.

According to ABC News, in early May, while speaking on This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Pompeo said, “While the intelligence community continues to do its work, they should continue to do that and verify so that we are certain. I can tell you that there is a significant amount of evidence that this came from that laboratory in Wuhan.”

Then, on Monday, an editorial by China’s state-owned Global Times newspaper objected to Pompeo’s comments.

The paper accused Pompeo of betraying Christianity by “spreading lies or misleading the public” by asserting that China hid the outbreak.

“[H]is lying for political purposes is contrary to his label as a so-called ‘devout Christian,’” reads the editorial, adding that the “Christian doctrine opposes lying – it’s a sin.”

The editorial goes on to cite scriptures on lying such as, Proverbs 19:9 which says, “a false witness shall not go unpunished. And he that utters lies shall perish,” and from the Ten Commandments, ‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.’”

The editorial concludes by saying that Pompeo…

New York City’s subway system closes for first time in 115 years: The reward of unseen service

NYPD and MTA officers wake up a sleeping passenger before directing him to exit the 207th Street A-train station, Thursday, April 30, 2020, in the Manhattan borough of New York. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday, New York City is shutting down its subway system each day from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. to increase cleaning of trains and stations during the coronavirus crisis.

New York City’s subway system closed last night for the first time since it opened in 1904. It will remain closed daily from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. for the foreseeable future. This is because transit workers need this time to disinfect trains, stations, and equipment in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

An hour before the system’s official last call, about a thousand police officers and over one hundred outreach workers from the Department of Social Services fanned out across the system to begin clearing stations. Police officers closed gates or tied yellow caution ribbon across entrances to keep people away. Outreach workers offered homeless riders assistance in finding a shelter.

Workers wearing Tyvek suits, shoe covers, and face masks mopped floors and wiped down every bench and pole. They also swept every car and scrubbed off graffiti.

The interim president of the transit system said in a news conference yesterday, “This is the single largest cleaning and disinfecting program we’ve ever undertaken by a mile.”

The reward of unseen service

When riders boarded trains again today, they were the beneficiaries of these unseen servants. Most will never know the names of the men and women who worked through the night to keep them safe.

This is true of so many dimensions of our culture as we fight this pandemic. Researchers we could not name are working on therapies to mitigate symptoms of COVID-19 and vaccines to keep us from becoming infected. Workers are bringing food and supplies to our stores and our homes. Technology providers are enabling us to work online and…
