The Hillsborough disaster of 1989, which killed 96 people, left families without answers for years. However, Bishop James Jones was asked in 2010 to write a review of the experience of these families and how they were treated by the media, police and other authorities.

After a year and a half the Bishop has compiled their words into a report running to 120 pages. He concludes that families felt “patronised” and “dehumanised”.

He explained: “What happens very often when there’s a disaster is that the public inst involved official closes ranks, puts their own reputation over and  above the needs of the individuals, the aggrieved and the bereaved.”

It also features 25 points to ensure that no families should ever experiences the same things again.
He calls for proper participation of families at inquests and a ‘duty of candour’ by police officers who fail to co-operate into alleged offences or misconduct.

He recommends that parliament should consider a Hillsborough-law, which would create new criminal offences for people who cover-up failures.

This law has also been supported by the Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham and several Labour MPs who say it will also help those who were affected by the Grenfell fire. 

As the national marriage equality postal survey entered its final week, the leading organisation behind the “no” campaign, the Australian Christian Lobby’s NSW director wrote to councillors asking them to re-evaluate the use of public money for LGBTI groups.

Kieren Jackson asked them to instead prioritise “the most vulnerable in society, the sick and those with disabilities”, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

He went on to say: “The question that needs to be asked is whether the Inner West Council’s energetic support of the ‘Yes’ campaign in the current postal survey is colouring the council’s judgment when it comes to being responsible with ratepayers’ money.”

However, his bid was unsuccessful as councillors voted overwhelmingly to approve more than $67,000 in funding for 13 LGBTI programs for the upcoming year.

Mayor Darcy Byrne told a council meeting on Tuesday: “We are giving out several hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants to a wide range of organisations, some of which are LGBT organisations. So what?

“Anyone who is arguing against [support] for a particular group or subset because it’s exclusive is also arguing for an end for any support from this council to any ethnic groups.”

Councillors also backed an amendment for a report outlining the “criteria and processes” involved in the approval of projects in the annual grant program.

The instruction follows US President Donald Trump calling for a merit based US immigration system in response to a truck driven by a 29-year-old Uzbekistan immigrant ploughing to death eight people.

The suspect, who was shot and is in hospital, has been living in America since 2010 and arrived legally.

Jennifer Mills-Knutsen, senior minister at the American International Church in London, told Premier how people in New York are feeling.

She told Premier’s News Hour: “It is always a shock because these terror attacks are designed to be exactly that. They’re designed to catch people off guard, and to make people feel unsafe in places where they ought to feel safe.

It’s reported a note pledging allegiance to Islamic State has been found in the truck which crashed into people in New York, which also left more than a dozen others injured.

It happened close to the World Trade Center in Manhattan and is New York’s first fatal terror attack since 9-11.
