Astronauts return from space but trip home is diverted by pandemic: Trusting the God who knows our pain

US astronaut Jessica Meir waves shortly after the landing of the Russian Soyuz MS-15 space capsule near Kazakh in Kazakhstan, on April 17, 2020.

NASA astronauts Andrew Morgan and Jessica Meir returned
safely today from the International Space Station. A capsule carrying them and
Russian cosmonaut Oleg Skripochka touched down in Kazakhstan as scheduled.

However, all of Kazakhstan’s provinces are in coronavirus
lockdown. As a result, search and rescue teams could not set up base in the
area where the capsule landed. So the US astronauts will have to drive 186
miles to the city of Kzylorda, where they will board a NASA aircraft.

After 205 days in space, 3,280 orbits of Earth, and a trip of 86.9 million miles, their return home is being diverted by the virus.

One of the many ways the COVID-19 pandemic is so
unprecedented is the fact that it is impacting our world in such an
all-encompassing way. It’s hard to identify an area of our lives that is not
being affected.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station could not
catch the virus, of course. But when they returned to our planet, they joined
the rest of us in facing this pandemic.

The solidarity of the virus’s effect, however, is also one
of our strongest causes for hope.

Trusting the God who knows our pain

Medical researchers from around the world are working on
therapies and vaccines. Governments from around the world are seeking ways to
help each other with needed supplies. And the most common refrain I have heard
in these days, “We’re all in this together,” is a source of hope.

Psychologists have long noted the “chameleon effect”—our
nonconscious mimicry of the behaviors of those with whom we interact as we seek
to connect with them. Studies show that we are drawn to people who feel the
same way we do about the world. Happy people seek out happy people; those who
are depressed or discouraged are drawn to people who are depressed…

Cuba Releases Christian Homeschool Mom Imprisoned for Refusing to Send Kids to Government Schools

Cuba Releases Christian Homeschool Mom Imprisoned for Refusing to Send Kids to Government Schools

Religious freedom advocates are celebrating after Cuban authorities decided to release a Christian mother from jail.

Expósito Leyva was imprisoned along with her husband, Pastor Ramon Rigal, last April after refusing to send her children to a government-run school.

According to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, the couple had opted to homeschool the children in order to avoid them being indoctrinated with socialist and atheistic ideologies.

They were subsequently charged with “acts against the normal development of a minor,” put on trial and ultimately jailed, spending 11 months behind bars. Now, finally, she is free.

“While we welcome the release of Expósito and are particularly relieved that she can be reunited with her children, we believe that she should never have been imprisoned in the first place,” USCIRF Commissioner and civil rights lawyer Anurima Bhargava said in a statement.

“The charges brought against her and her husband are part of the Cuban government’s harassment, discrimination, and arbitrary detention of individuals simply seeking to practice their religion.”

Speaking to CBN News, Bhargava said she hoped the release “indicates something that is positive” with regards to the Cuban government recognizing that imprisoning a parent simply because they decided to personally educate their child is “not…

‘We’re Opening Up Our Country:’ Trump Announces 3-Phase Plan for Reopening America

‘We’re Opening Up Our Country:’ Trump Announces 3-Phase Plan for Reopening America

President Trump on Thursday announced a three-phase strategy to reopen America, saying an extended national shutdown is “not a sustainable long-term solution.”

The effort will be led by governors, he said.

Continuing the current strategy indefinitely in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic, he said, would have devastating effects.

“A prolonged lockdown combined with a forced economic depression would inflict an immense and wide-ranging toll on public health,” Trump said. “This includes a sharp rise in drug abuse, alcohol abuse, suicide, heart disease and many other dimensions of physical and mental wellbeing. Moreover, many patients have put needed medical care on hold, creating entirely new hazards for public health.”

The White House’s strategy includes three phases to “restore economic life.”

“Healthy Americans will now be able to return to work as conditions on the ground allow,” Trump said. “Instead of a blanket shutdown, we will pursue a focus on sheltering the highest-risk individuals.”

Each phase will include benchmarks on new case growth, cases and hospital capacity “that must be met before advancing to each phase,” he said.

For example, in order to proceed to the three-phase strategy, a state should show a downward trajectory of documented cases within a 14-day period or a “downward trajectory of positive tests as a percent of total…

What do Drake, Metallica, and Andrea Bocelli have in common? Trusting anonymous heroes and our unseen Lord

Italian singer Andrea Bocelli performs outside the Duomo cathedral, on Easter Sunday, in Milan, Italy, April 12, 2020.

A Canadian rapper, a heavy metal band, and an Italian opera singer are making news today.

Andrea Bocelli set a record for a classical live stream with his inspirational Easter Sunday performance at the empty Duomo in Milan. Drake’s latest video, which was made while the rapper was quarantined in Toronto, debuted at No. 2 on YouTube’s US Top Videos chart. He wore a mask and gloves to signify his COVID-19 precautions.

And Metallica’s return to the US charts followed a recent series of its performances uploaded to YouTube. They are just one of the groups being used to raise funds and awareness for pandemic-related causes.

I doubt the three have made the same headline often in their careers, but these are unusual times.

In other pandemic-related celebrity news, Matt Damon is spending time in the small town of Dalkey, Ireland, where he was shooting a film when the pandemic forced the area into lockdown. He’s been taking photos with locals and eating in the restaurants with his family.

Matthew McConaughey, Peyton Manning, and Shaquille O’Neal have surprised students and teachers in virtual classrooms recently. Jennifer Garner, Amy Adams, and Ryan Reynolds and his wife, Blake Lively, are just some of the other celebrities also making significant contributions during this crisis.

Unknown heroes

President Trump announced yesterday the White House’s plan for rolling back social distancing measures and reopening the country’s economy. The strategy calls for three phases based on the severity of the coronavirus outbreak in each individual state or region.

This plan was created by the White House Coronavirus Task Force, most of whom have not been in the news. It depends on widespread testing, essential work that will be done by frontline healthcare professionals who will not make headlines but…

Steph Curry’s Next Film, Jump Shot, Releases this Week

Steph Curry’s Next Film, Jump Shot, Releases this Week

The latest movie from Steph Curry’s Unanimous Media releases on home video platforms this week and spotlights a slice of basketball history unknown to most hoops fans.

The documentary Jump Shot, available for rental April 16-18, tells the inspiring story of Kenny Sailors, an All-American at the University of Wyoming in the 1940s and the inventor of the modern jump shot. Prior to Sailors, two-handed set shots dominated the game.

It includes interviews with Curry, Kevin Durant, Dirk Nowitzki, Clark Kellogg, Bob Knight, Nancy Lieberman, Lou Carnesecca and others.

Curry is an executive producer. It is the second film from Unanimous Media, which he co-founded. Aspiration Entertainment is the distributor.

Ten percent of the revenue will go toward COVID-19 relief efforts.

“Learning the history of where the art of the jump shot came from, who introduced it to the game, and how it changed the game, was incredibly intriguing,” Curry said. “Even more importantly, learning about the person that Kenny was, and what he stood for, was very inspirational. He was a selfless, special person that had the right perspective about life.

“… There’s so many people like myself that don’t know Kenny Sailors, and I’m proud to help share his story with the world.”

The movie follows Sailors’ life, from his days at Wyoming, to his service in World War II, to his time with his family in Alaska, where he…

Woman dies of COVID-19 one day before 75th anniversary of her liberation from Auschwitz: Choosing a legacy that matters

Margit Buchhalter Feldman was fifteen years old when her
family was murdered at Auschwitz. She lied about her age, telling the Nazis she
was eighteen, and was assigned to forced labor rather than being killed in the
gas chambers.

She was born in Budapest on June 12, 1929, the same birth date as Anne Frank. She and her two parents were imprisoned in 1944 before they were taken to Auschwitz. She said in a 2016 documentary, “You were put into a barrack, where people died. The straw that you laid down was full of whatever came out of their bodies . . . It didn’t take twenty-four hours for your body to get covered with lice.”

By the time she was liberated by the British in 1945,
Feldman was suffering from pneumonia and pleurisy and was injured by an
explosion set by the Germans who were trying to destroy the camp. She moved to
the US in 1947 when she learned she had an aunt living in New York and became
an X-ray technician.

She was married in 1953 and had a son and a daughter, each
of whom was named for her parents. Years later, she began telling children her
story to educate them about the Holocaust.

Feldman explained in a 2017 interview: “It is important
for me to remember that six million of my fellow Jews were slaughtered, and a
million and a half of those victims were children. I am here and I firmly
believe it is because God wanted me to survive and be here and tell the free
world what an uncaring world did to its fellow human beings.”

Her son is now a doctor working on the front lines of the
coronavirus pandemic in New Jersey. Her husband, Harvey, is hospitalized for
COVID-19.

On Tuesday, one day before the seventy-fifth anniversary of her liberation, Margit Buchhalter Feldman died of complications from COVID-19. She was ninety years old.

Choosing a legacy that matters

Those of us who did not experience the Holocaust cannot truly understand its horrors.

I have led more than thirty study tours to Israel; each…

These California Churches Say Holding In-Person Services Is Essential despite Pandemic

These California Churches Say Holding In-Person Services Is Essential despite Pandemic

LOS ANGELES (RNS) — The faithful stood in line for about two hours to receive Communion at Godspeak Calvary Chapel in Thousand Oaks.

Some were in tears as they approached the Communion table. The church, which typically dispenses about 400 Communion cups on a regular Sunday, served over 700 that day.

Pastors from other churches attended. Protesters and police were there.

This was the scene pastor Rob McCoy witnessed April 5 when he decided to open his sanctuary for Communion on Palm Sunday, despite a statewide stay-at-home order that bans group gatherings and shut down businesses except for those deemed essential.

“People needed this,” McCoy told Religion News Service. “What they did was not an affront. They wanted the community to know that Christ is critical and essential and they wanted to testify that no matter what it would cost them, even if they were going to be berated and maligned.”

To McCoy, receiving Communion is just as essential as people needing to get food from the grocery store. That Sunday, he said, worshippers followed social distancing guidelines while they stood in line. Tape was cued 6 feet apart on the sidewalk. Only 10 people were permitted inside the sanctuary at a time. Communion elements were individually sealed. Lysol was sprayed on seats after those attending got up to leave.

“Why are we being scrutinized when we actually have the…

My favorite coronavirus humor: Finding ‘signals of transcendence’ in a pandemic

An 1828 political cartoon depicts President Abraham Lincoln laughing while saying, “All this reminds me of a most capital joke.” Public domain.

President Trump announced yesterday the White House’s three-phase plan for easing social distancing measures, a subject I intend to discuss in this afternoon’s Special Edition. For this morning, however, let’s shift from news about the coronavirus pandemic to focus on a surprising way to respond to news about the pandemic.

I’m reading Edward Achorn’s Every Drop of Blood, which masterfully sets Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugural address in its historical context. I have long been a student of Civil War history, but I did not realize the depth of personal rejection and suffering our sixteenth president endured as he tried to lead the nation through her most perilous days.

And yet, Lincoln was famous during the war for his quips and down-home humor. He would often respond to criticism and anger with a story that changed the entire tone of the moment. He once explained his strategy: “With the fearful strain that is on me night and day, if I did not laugh I should die.”

On another occasion Lincoln said he felt “like the boy that stumped his toe: it hurt too bad to laugh, and he was too big to cry.” He summarized his spirit in crisis this way: “I laugh because I must not cry.”

“The world has turned upside down”

Now let’s try an experiment. A dear friend sent me some “humor while in quarantine” yesterday:

  • “Quarantine has turned us into dogs. We roam the house all day looking for food. We are told ‘no’ if we get too close to strangers. And we get really excited about car rides.”
  • “The world has turned upside down. Old folks are sneaking out of the house, and their kids are yelling at them to stay indoors.”
  • “2019: Stay away from negative people. 2020: Stay away from positive people.”
  • “Tomorrow is the National Homeschool Tornado…

Disney’s DuckTales Reveals Character Has 2 Dads

Disney’s DuckTales Reveals Character Has 2 Dads

DuckTales is the latest Disney children’s series to insert LGBT characters into the plot.

The Disney XD series, currently in its third season, follows the adventures of Scrooge McDuck, his nephew Donald Duck and their triplet relatives Huey, Dewey, and Louie. (The trio are the nephews of Donald and the grand-nephews of Scrooge.)

In the Season 3 premiere, viewers learn that one of the characters – Violet Sabrewing – has two dads. The episode follows Violet and her friends as they learn if they have transitioned from the Scout-like “Junior Woodchuck” to “Senior Woodchuck.”

Parents are in attendance for the ceremony, and each of Violet’s fathers wears a T-shirt with the words “I’M WITH DAD” and an arrow pointing to the other. During one scene, one of Violet’s friends becomes excited about Violet’s Woodchuck success and shouts, “That’s my sister from a couple misters!”

Although neither father speaks during the episode, they stand on each side of her as she is named a Senior Woodchuck.

Disney series Andi Mack, The Lodge, Star vs. the Forces of Evil and Gravity Falls also have featured LGBT characters.

Still, DuckTales – with its ties to an iconic Disney character, Donald Duck – is another landmark in Disney’s goal of LGBT inclusion.

Frank Angones, co-executive producer of DuckTales, said the two dads “do not play a huge role in the story” – although he hopes…
