Greenville Mayor Waives $500 Tickets Given to Congregants Attending Drive-In Church Service

Greenville Mayor Waives $500 Tickets Given to Congregants Attending Drive-In Church Service

The mayor of Greenville, Mississippi said Monday that he has waived the $500 tickets that were issued to Temple Baptist Church congregants at an April 8 drive-in church service.

Grenville Mayor Errick Simmons’ announcement comes after he initially approved an executive order on April 7 that prohibits drive-in services until the state’s shelter-in-place is lifted.

Reports say eight Greenville police officers issued $500 tickets to congregants who refused to leave a parking lot where Temple Baptist Church was having a drive-in service on April 8. Church members were parked in the church’s parking lot with their windows rolled up, listening to a sermon broadcast.

The story about the tickets received national attention with many saying the fines were unnecessary and unfair. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves released a statement on Facebook as well, saying, “Don’t trample the Constitution. Please use sense, everybody.”

Simmons said the order limiting gatherings to 10 people or less remains in place, but he said he has asked the governor’s office to provide more direction on how to handle drive-in church services.

“What we’re asking for is definitive guidance regarding drive-in and parking lot services, that’s what the issue is,” Simmons said.

After the pastor of King James Bible Baptist Church in Greenville appeared on national TV to discuss the mayor’s…

Brad Pitt joins the Property Brothers on HGTV: ‘Freely you received, freely give’

Brad Pitt and Drew and Jonathan Scott, the Property Brothers.

Brad Pitt made his debut on HGTV last night.

The Oscar winner joined the Property Brothers, Drew and Jonathan Scott, on their latest show. Each week, a celebrity will give the gift of a home makeover to someone special in their lives. Pitt surprised his longtime friend and makeup artist of thirty years by renovating her detached garage into a guest suite.

According to Jonathan Scott, by the end of the renovation Pitt had made friends with the entire crew: “At the very end he remembered every single person’s name on the production crew and on the construction crew. He remembered everybody and wanted to make sure they knew how grateful he was for what was happening. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word.”

The young woman who married me

I cannot change the world today, but I can change one person’s life in the world today. And I change one person’s life by becoming involved personally with them.

I will never forget the friend who drove across Houston the day after my father’s death to stay with me. He didn’t say anything that I remember. He was just there. That was in 1979, but it feels like yesterday.

I could go on: the Sunday school teacher who led me to Christ; the college professor who became my spiritual father; the seminary president who believed in me; the elderly woman in my first pastorate who became my spiritual mentor; the couple in Dallas who enabled us to launch this ministry.

Of course, at the head of the list is the young woman who agreed to marry me nearly forty years ago. She took a chance on a minister-to-be with limited financial means and an uncertain future. She has been the love of my life and the most significant influence in my life ever since.

49 Percent of Americans Say Bible Should ‘Influence’ U.S. Laws

49 Percent of Americans Say Bible Should ‘Influence’ U.S. Laws

About half of Americans believe the Bible should have at least some influence on U.S. laws, and one-fourth say the Bible should take precedence over the will of the people, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

The poll of 6,395 adults found that 49 percent of Americans believe the Bible should influence U.S. laws. This includes 23 percent who say it should have a “great deal” of influence and 26 percent who say it should have “some” influence. Nineteen percent of Americans say the Bible should have “not much” influence on U.S. laws, while 31 percent say it should have no influence.

The survey was highlighted in a March 13 “Fact Tank” blog at Pew’s website.

Among specific religious groups, the survey found a wide range of opinions on whether the Bible should have at least some influence on U.S. laws. For example, 76 percent of Protestants, 89 percent of white evangelicals, 76 percent of black Protestant church members, 51 percent of Catholics and 31 percent of Jewish Americans say the Bible should have at least some influence.

A total of 58 percent of white evangelicals and 47 percent of black Protestant church members say the Bible should have “a great deal” of influence.

But there is a sharp political divide on the issue. A full 67 percent of Republicans (34 percent “a great deal,” 33 percent “some”) but only 33 percent of Democrats (13 percent “a great…

His Exile Extended 11 Months, Christian in Iran Finds Warm Welcome

His Exile Extended 11 Months, Christian in Iran Finds Warm Welcome

April 13, 2020 (Morning Star News) – When a convert from Islam in Iran was sentenced to two years in exile in Sarbaz last year, the judge warned him that religious extremists in the remote desert town would treat him harshly.

When Ebrahim Firoozi arrived in November to southwest Iran near the border with Pakistan, though, he discovered the fear the judge had tried to instill in him was unfounded – local Muslims were helpful, open and hospitable, the Christian said in a recent online interview.

This discovery was all the more welcome as in March his term of exile was extended by another 11 months.

Upon his arrival in Sarbaz, one person invited Firoozi to stay at his home the first night; others quickly found him a place to live. Local people’s kindness only increased, he said, when they learned he was exiled for his Christian faith rather than for a crime.

“I found these people to be very noble,” Firoozi, 34, told Joseph Hovsepian of Hovsepian Ministries in an interview posted on YouTube in which he opened up about his conversion and his years in prison before exile.

Firoozi and advocates believe this kindness was an answer to the prayers of worried friends, family and others.

“The reason people were nice to me wasn’t because of my own character or my goodness. It was all because of God,” Firoozi told Hovsepian.

Released from Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj on Oct. 26, Firoozi was…

Storms devastate the South: ‘I’m just going to let the insurance handle it and trust the good Lord’

The Miguel Castillos family all pitch in to recover items from the destroyed family trailer in the Ridgeview trailer park after a deadly tornado in Murray County on Monday, April 13, 2020, in Chatsworth, Ga.

“Robert left his world a hero, as he shielded Mrs.
Paula during the storm.” This is how a Facebook message describes the
death of a sheriff’s deputy in Mississippi and his wife.

They were two of more than twenty victims of severe weather that swept across the South earlier this week. The storms killed people in Mississippi, Georgia, Arkansas, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Electricity was lost to nearly 1.3 million customers.

Andrew Phillips crowded into a closet-sized “safe
room” with his wife and two sons in rural Moss, Mississippi. They had been
watching an online Easter service because the pandemic forced their church to
halt regular worship. Then a twister struck, shredding their house. The room,
built of cinder blocks, was the only thing on their property left standing.

“I’m just going to let the insurance handle it and trust the good Lord,” said Phillips.

Life goes on in this fallen world

One of the tragedies of the coronavirus pandemic is that
other tragedies are still just as tragic. From heart attacks and strokes to
storms and car accidents, life goes on in this fallen world. The pandemic adds
a dimension of fear and uncertainty to the present and future, making our lives
feel even more fragile.

But Andrew Phillips is right: no matter what happens on this
broken planet, the Lord is still good.

Nothing about the present changes his past character or future providence. From Abel’s death in Genesis to John’s exile in Revelation, God’s people have suffered along with everyone else. Sometimes he prevents tragedies (as when he freed Peter from Herod’s prison in Acts 12), but sometimes he allows pain and redeems it for the greater good (as with Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” in 2 Corinthians…

How Jesus Sees The Coronavirus Today – an Animated Short Film

This animated short film tells the story of a leper who came to Jesus for healing in Matthew Chapter 8.

In Jesus’ days, leprosy was a highly contagious disease and the law forbade lepers from coming into contact with anyone. This meant that for years, this leper had been shunned by everyone who saw his condition, even his own family and children. The good news is—Jesus sought Him out, and willingly gave this precious man his miracle.

The story of the leper in Matthew Chapter 8 closely parallels the current times that we are living in. The coronavirus is a highly contagious disease, and anyone who has contracted it has to be quarantined and kept away from the public.

Beloved, if you know someone who needs to hear this story of hope and healing, will you share it with them today? We pray that this video will minister to you and your loved ones especially in these times we are living in.

The brightest supernova ever discovered: How to experience omnipotence today

Astronomers say they have discovered the largest and brightest supernova ever seen.

A supernova is defined as an extremely bright and powerful explosion of a dying, massive star at least five times the mass of our sun. A study published yesterday reports that the mass of this supernova, labeled SN2016aps, was between fifty and one hundred times greater than our sun.

For a sense of scale: our sun could contain 1.3 million Earths and is about 333,000 times the mass of our planet. It contains 99.8 percent of the mass of the entire solar system. While it has burned off material that is more than 100 times the mass of the Earth, this is only about 0.05 percent of the sun’s total mass.

But our sun is only 1 to 2 percent the size of the supernova now being reported. And there are estimated to be 100 billion such stars in the Milky Way galaxy, and ten trillion such galaxies in the universe.

And our God made all of that.

A path to triumphant courage

Nearly half the people in the US feel the coronavirus pandemic is harming their mental health. As the Washington Post notes, “If you’re scared, anxious, depressed, struggling to sleep through the night, or just on edge, you’re not alone.”

While COVID-19 is now the number one cause of death per day in the US, heart disease still kills 1,773 people every day and cancer causes 1,641 deaths a day.

In other words, there’s a lot to worry about. But there’s a way of dealing courageously and triumphantly with life on this broken planet, a source of strength and hope that is available to every child of God.

And we celebrated it just two days ago.

“Eternal life is the gift of God”

Christians around the world announced on Easter Sunday that Jesus is “risen indeed.” The grief of watching his execution and burial on Good Friday pales into the glorious sunrise of his resurrection from the grave on the third day.

Now the risen Christ wants to infuse…

Intelligence Officers in Cuba Ratchet Up Harassment of Christian Journalist

Intelligence Officers in Cuba Ratchet Up Harassment of Christian Journalist

MIAMI, April 10, 2020 (Morning Star News) – Intelligence officials in Cuba have increased harassment of an independent journalist, summoning the Christian and his mother twice in the past two weeks to threaten harsh consequences if he continues reporting on human rights issues, sources said.

As part of his Christian calling, Yoe Suárez has reported for non-state media outlets in Cuba since 2014 about human rights and freedom of religion issues, including the imprisonment of husband-and-wife pastoral team Ramón Rigal and Adya Expósito. They were imprisoned in April 2019 for homeschooling their children.

Following a series of interrogations and threats by Cuba’s Department of State Security (DSE, the inland intelligence branch) over the past year, an intelligence official identifying himself as a second-in-command-for-the-press summoned Suárez and his mother on April 3 to the Siboney Police Station, Playa municipality in Havana, according to Suárez.

The official, who identified himself as “Captain Jorge,” issued a series of implied threats to Suárez’s mother about consequences her 29-year-old son would suffer if he continued working as a reporter outside of Cuban intelligence controls, Suárez said.

“He told us, ‘You don´t know what a dungeon is, or what it is to have a patrol in front of your house,’” Suárez told Morning Star News.

Suárez added that the…
