Rusty Wright on Managing Your Coronavirus Fears

Coronavirus has spawned fears galore.  Infection and death numbers soar.  People wonder:  Will I catch it?  Will my loved ones?  Will it kill us?  Will I survive economically?  Layoffs and roller-coaster financial markets escalate apprehension.

So, how many of these coronavirus fear factors apply to you?

Dreams can die.  Sports seasons are cancelled.  The Olympics are postponed.  Aspiring stars find themselves with no stage for displaying their talents.  Graduating university students find excellent corporate job offers rescinded.  Projects involving public events or face-to-face interaction are scuttled.  Movie theaters go dark, affecting production, promotion, and popcorn sales.  Restaurants focus on takeout.  Vacations are cancelled.

And the grocery stores… Tired of trying to buy toilet paper?  Or hand sanitizer?  A local Walmart distributes sanitary wipes to entering customers – one sheet per person, to wipe your cart handles – but good luck trying to find any to purchase.

Got cabin fever?  Social isolation can make you feel unattached and depressed.  Boredom – or COVID-19 TV saturation – prompts some sports junkies to binge on reruns of their team’s glory days.

UK PM Johnson out of the Hospital, Says Staff Saved his Life

LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been discharged from a London hospital where he was treated in intensive care for the new coronavirus.

Johnson’s office says he left St. Thomas’ Hospital and will continue his recovery at Chequers, the prime minister’s country house. He will not immediately return to work.

Johnson has been in the hospital for a week and spent three nights in the ICU.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: AP’s earlier story is below:

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he owes his life to the National Health Service staff who treated him for COVID-19, ahead of figures Sunday in which the U.K. is expected to surpass 10,000 coronavirus-related deaths.

“I can’t thank them enough,” Johnson said in his first public statement since he was moved out of intensive care Thursday night at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London. “I owe them my life.”

Johnson, 55, was diagnosed over two weeks ago, becoming the first world leader confirmed to have the illness. His coronavirus symptoms at first were said to have been mild, including a cough and a fever, and he was working from home during the first few days.

But he was admitted to St. Thomas’ on April 5 after his condition worsened and he was transferred the following day to its intensive care unit, where he received oxygen but was not put onto a ventilator. He spent three nights there before moving back to a regular hospital ward.

While he convalesces, Johnson has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to handle the nation’s response to the pandemic that has infected at least 1.78 million worldwide and killed 109,000 people. Experts say those numbers seriously understate the impact of the pandemic, due to limited testing and different ways of counting the dead.

Britain has been in effective lockdown since March 23 and the government is set to extend the restrictions sometime next week.

But Johnson’s Conservative government has come under fire for its slow response to confronting the pandemic — allowing tens of thousands to gather at the Cheltenham horse racing festival in mid-March, for example. It’s also faced criticism for its slow rollout of a coronavirus testing program.

Over the past few days, the government has also faced acute criticism for the lack of personal protective equipment for frontline workers in hospitals, amid reports that some nurses have had to resort to cutting up garbage bags to cover themselves.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock revealed Saturday that 19 frontline workers have died from the virus.

The Royal College of Nursing has piled more pressure on the government, urging members to refuse to treat patients as a “last resort” if adequate protections are not provided.

Business Secretary Alok Sharma stopped short Sunday of apologizing for the lack of medical masks and gowns but said it is “absolutely right that no medical professional should be placed in a position where they have to make that choice.”

“That is why we are making sure we get the equipment to the frontline,” he told Sky News.

Figures later Sunday are expected to show that over 10,000 people in the U.K. have died after testing positive for coronavirus. That would make Britain the fourth European country after Italy, Spain and France to reach that grim milestone, even with its limited testing.

On Saturday, Britain reported 917 new coronavirus-related deaths in its hospitals for an overall death toll of 9,875.

With Britain’s death toll increasing at such a rapid daily pace, and the virus death tolls in Italy and Spain on a downward slope, there are growing fears that the U.K. will end up being the country with the most virus deaths in Europe. The continent has had almost 74,000 reported coronavirus deaths.

Last week, the British government’s chief scientific adviser, Patrick Vallance, warned that the daily number of deaths would likely increase for a couple more weeks.

Sharma refused to be drawn in on whether the U.K. will end up with the highest death toll in Europe.

“We are at different trajectories,” he said told the BBC. “We are starting to see these measures work.”

In Easter Message, Queen Says ‘We Need Easter as Much as Ever’ and Reminds Britain That ‘Light and Life Are Greater’ Than the Darkness of Death

“Coronavirus will not overcome us,” the Queen has said, in an Easter message to the nation.

While celebrations would be different for many this year, she said: “We need Easter as much as ever.”

Referencing the tradition of lighting candles to mark the occasion, she said: “As dark as death can be – particularly for those suffering with grief – light and life are greater.”

It comes as the number of coronavirus deaths in UK hospitals reached 9,875.

Speaking from Windsor Castle, the Queen said many religions had festivals celebrating light overcoming darkness, which often featured the lighting of candles.

She said: “They seem to speak to every culture, and appeal to people of all faiths, and of none.

“They are lit on birthday cakes and to mark family anniversaries, when we gather happily around a source of light. It unites us.”

The monarch, who is head of the Church of England, said: “As darkness falls on the Saturday before Easter Day, many Christians would normally light candles together.

“In church, one light would pass to another, spreading slowly and then more rapidly as more candles are lit. It’s a way of showing how the good news of Christ’s resurrection has been passed on from the first Easter by every generation until now.”
