Los Angeles Charges Harvey Weinstein With Additional Sexual Assault Count

Los Angeles prosecutors on Friday filed a new charge against Harvey Weinstein, stemming from an alleged assault at a Beverly Hills hotel room in 2010.

Weinstein is already awaiting extradition to Los Angeles to face four other charges, stemming from two incidents in hotels in February 2013. The former producer is serving a 23-year sentence in a prison near Buffalo, N.Y., for rape and sexual assault.

In the new case, Weinstein is accused of “sexual battery by restraint” against a woman at a hotel room on May 11, 2010. The woman was first interviewed by detectives in October 2019, and was later able to provide evidence that showed the incident happened within the statute of limitations.

Prosecutors were facing a deadline to file the charge, as the 10-year statute was set to expire next month. The new charge carries a potential sentence of four years in prison, meaning that Weinstein is now facing a theoretical maximum of 29 years on the Los Angeles charges.

The D.A.’s office was investigating two other allegations against Weinstein, but declined to file those charges because the alleged victims did not want to testify.

The D.A.’s office did not identify any of the women in the three cases. However, a description of one of the women who declined to testify matches Jessica Mann, the hairdresser and onetime aspiring actress who testified against Weinstein in his New York trial.

Easter and the Plague: Nothing Has Changed About the Easter Story — Just Your Story, Part 7 by Daniel Whyte III

TEXT: Matthew 27:11-54

11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.

12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.

13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?

14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.

15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.

16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.

17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?

18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.

21 The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.

22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.

23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.

24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.

28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.

29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.

31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.

33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,

34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.

35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

36 And sitting down they watched him there;

37 And set up over his head his accusation written, This Is Jesus The King Of The Jews.

38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.

39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,

40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,

42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.

48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.

49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.

50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

——-

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 18:8: “Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

Gospel Light House of Prayer Good Friday Communion Service with Daniel Whyte III

COMMUNION

SING “Let Us Break Bread Together”

Let us break bread together on our knees, (on our knees)
Let us break bread together on our knees. (on our knees)
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

Let us drink the cup together on our knees, (on our knees)
Let us drink the cup together on our knees. (on our knees)
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

Let us praise God together on our knees, (on our knees)
Let us praise God together on our knees. (on our knees)
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

—PRAYER—

On the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread: And when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, Take, eat; this is my body, which is broken for you: This do in remembrance of me.

PRAYER

John 6:58 says, “This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.”

TAKE AND EAT

“In the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, ‘This cup is the new testament in my blood: This do you as oft as ye drink it in remembrance of me.’ For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till he come.”

PRAYER

Hebrews 9:22 says, “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”

1 John 1:7 says, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”

TAKE AND DRINK

After they had finished the first Supper, they sang a hymn and went out into the night.

Now, as we close this service, let us sing “The Love of God”

The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell
It goes beyond the highest star
And reaches to the lowest hell
The guilty pair bowed down with care
God gave His Son to win
His erring child He reconciled
And pardoned from His sin

O love of God how rich and pure
How measureless and strong
It shall forevermore endure
The saints and angels’ song

When years of time shall pass away
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall
When men who here refuse to pray
On rocks and hills and mountains call
God’s love so sure shall still endure
All measureless and strong
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race
The saints and angels’ song

O love of God how rich and pure
How measureless and strong
It shall forevermore endure
The saints and angels’ song

Could we with ink the ocean fill
And were the skies of parchment made
Were every stalk on earth a quill
And every man a scribe by trade
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry
Nor could the scroll contain the whole
Though stretched from sky to sky

O love of God how rich and pure
How measureless and strong
It shall forevermore endure
The saints and angels’ song

—-

Now, as we close this service, let us sing “There is a Fountain Filled With Blood”

There is a fountain filled with blood
Drawn from Emmanuel’s veins
And sinners plunged beneath that flood
Lose all their guilty stains
Lose all their guilty stains
Lose all their guilty stains
And sinners plunged beneath that flood
Lose all their guilty stains

The dying thief rejoice to see
That fountain in his day
And there may I though vile as he
Wash all my sins away
Wash all my sins away
Wash all my sins away
And there may I though vile as he
Wash all my sins away

E’er since by faith I saw the stream
Thy flowing wounds supply
Redeeming love has been my theme
And shall be ’till I die
And shall be ’till I die
And shall be ’till I die
Redeeming love has been my theme
And shall be ’till I die

When this poor lisping stammering tongue
Lies silent in the grave
Then in a nobler sweeter song
I’ll sing Thy power to save
I’ll sing Thy power to save
I’ll sing Thy power to save
Then in a nobler sweeter song
I’ll sing Thy power to save

—-

Now, as we close this service, let us sing “Blest be the Tie That Binds”

Blest be the tie that binds
Our hearts in Christian love;
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that

Before our Father’s throne,
We pour our ardent prayers;
Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one,
Our comforts, and our cares.

We share our mutual woes,
Our mutual burdens bear;
And often for each other flows
The sympathizing tear.

When we asunder part,
It gives us inward pain;
But we shall still be joined in heart,
And hope to meet again.

WATCH: Tony Evans to Host Online “Kingdom Men Calling” Event on Good Friday Urging Men to Covenant With God to Help Heal the Nation

Pastor Tony Evans is issuing a clarion call to men on Good Friday to covenant with God for the advance of His Kingdom and the healing of the land amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The vision for the “Kingdom Men Calling” online gathering was originally set in motion as a result of Evans’ ministry to men, in part based on his book Kingdom Man, in which he challenges men toward biblical, godly manhood. The event will be streamed on Evans’ Facebook page at 8 p.m. CT.

When COVID-19 hit, the longtime pastor Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas recalled the specific emphasis he placed on Exodus 34:23-24 in which God speaks of gathering men to appear before the Sovereign Lord in order to save the land.

“Given that the land is in trouble, that when men will covenant with God we can get God to intervene in our situation,” Evans explained in a Thursday phone interview with The Christian Post.

“When men fail it opens up the door for cultural collapse,” he stressed.

At the end of the gathering, every man who is interested will be invited to receive free downloads to continue further study of what covenanting with God looks like, specifically as it relates to manhood.

“We have plenty of religious men, we don’t have covenanted men, plenty of even Christian men who are not aligned underneath this word called covenant,” Evans says in a video promoting the gathering.

WATCH: Francis Chan Says Coronavirus Pandemic is a Good Time to Repent and Get Right With God, Warns God Might Not Want People to Return to ‘Church and Life as Usual’

Bestselling author and Bible teacher Francis Chan shared some perspective for leaders on the COVID-19 pandemic Wednesday by saying it’s a good time to get right with God and be open to the option that God might be shifting the church away from the norm.

Chan was a voice among 50 other Christian leaders, musicians, speakers, and pastors that partook in evangelist Nick Hall’s 10-hour lLivestream session called “Leader Check In” this week. During his portion, the former megachurch pastor, who recently left America to become a missionary in Asia, urged those watching to “repent” and self reflect because there’s a possibility we won’t go back to “church as usual, life as usual.”

“What if God is taking us to a different place?” Chan shared from the balcony of his new home in Hong Kong. “Many of us are anxious to get back to normal. I hope your anxiety is not just so you can go back and get busy with so many things.”

“What a powerful time to repent,” he said as he reflected on the fact that no one knows what will happen during and following the global pandemic.

Chan talked about a friend who recently decided to leave his wife for another woman and how dull that decision was in a time of such uncertainty.

“This could be the beginning of the end,” he stressed. He said he believes this occurrence is ushering in a new period for the church as a whole.

“God is doing something now that I’ve never seen in my lifetime … It feels like we’re headed into a new season.”

The preacher hopes for this to be a time of “growth” for those watching. This is a time to remember that Scripture says “to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

“Please get right with the Lord,” Chan implored, as he referenced James 4:10, which says, ”Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” “I’m begging you to think about humbling yourself.”

Seven More Pastors Die from Coronavirus in the United States

Multiple churches across the country will be celebrating Easter in grief come Sunday as the new coronavirus claimed the lives of at least seven more longtime pastors in the last two weeks. All of the pastors were older adults and some suffered from underlying conditions which left them vulnerable to the virus.

Monsignor Richard J. Guastella, pastor of St. Clare’s R.C. Church in Great Kills on Staten Island, New York, died early Thursday morning after “bravely battling the COVID-19 which led to his hospitalization last week,” according to a statement on the parish’s website. He was 73.

“It is with the utmost sadness that we share with you that our beloved pastor, Msgr. Richard J. Guastella, affectionately known as Fr. Richard, has returned to the Lord. Fr. Richard passed away in the early hours of Holy Thursday, April 9, 2020, after bravely battling the COVID-19 which led to his hospitalization last week,” the church said.

“It is fitting that the Lord chose to call Father home, after nearly 48 years of priesthood, on the day that we celebrate the Supper of the Lord, the Institution of the Holy Eucharist and the Priesthood. He is indeed a priest forever. We can all agree that this world was made a better place because God had blessed it with the gift that was Fr. Richard for the last 73 years. Now he belongs to his Maker,” the church added.

Guastella’s death comes exactly a week after the passing of his brother, Joseph, the church also noted.

The Rev. H. Gene Sykes, who led Friendship Baptist Church in Bayonne, New Jersey, for more than a quarter century, died of complications from the new coronavirus, Mayor Jimmy Davis announced Tuesday. He was 78.

“Rev. H. Gene Sykes, the pastor of Friendship Baptist Church, was one of Bayonne’s most prominent clergymen. Sadly, he has passed away after being infected by the coronavirus. He was well-known in the community for his spiritual and civic accomplishments. Rev. Sykes will be remembered for moving his congregation to a new location, where he renovated and expanded a former synagogue,” Davis said.

“Rev. Sykes gave many years of service as a volunteer Commissioner on the board of the Bayonne Housing Authority. He was an active member of the Bayonne Interfaith Clergy and other community organizations. On behalf of the city of Bayonne, I would like to offer our condolences to his family, friends, and congregation,” the mayor noted.

Sykes is survived by his wife, Fannie Steen Sykes; his children, John Sykes of Jersey City, Lynne Sykes-Horace of Plainfield and Tonya Sykes of Charlotte, North Carolina, NJ.com said.

The Rev. Andrea Bowman of Grace Episcopal Church of Ellensburg became the first Kittitas County resident to die from complications related to the new coronavirus. She died at 4:15 p.m. on Palm Sunday at the University of Washington ICU unit in Seattle, the Daily Record reported.

“It is with great sadness that we share that the Rev. Dr. Andrea Bowman died yesterday from complications from the Covid-19 virus. She served faithfully for many years in our diocese. May she rest in peace and rise in glory,” the Episcopal Diocese of Spokane announced on Facebook Monday.

In an interview with Yakima Herald, Bowman’s longtime friend and former colleague, Dr. Linda Beath, remembered the pastor fondly.

“Andrea had a wicked sense of humor and a lot of joy in life,” Beath said. “I love to cook and bake. We were in a restaurant one time and I was talking about how she was never really enthused about really good food.

“She said, ‘food is food, but good food is better.’ That became one of our old mantras when things got tough. It was like ‘food is food, but good food is better’ would lighten the moment.”

The Rev. Lawrence Wilkes, 80, stepped down as interim pastor at the Crystal Cathedral in 2012 when the Schuller family left amid a tumultuous bankruptcy. The Orange County Register reported that he died on March 31 after contracting the coronavirus.

“The Rev. Dr. Lawrence Wilkes passed away this morning from the coronavirus. A good man that I knew from the Crystal Cathedral. The virus hasn’t seemed real because of not knowing anyone that was sick. Now it’s very real. NOW IT’S PERSONAL,” Greg Iannolo wrote in a post on Facebook.

Wilkes lived in Anaheim and is survived by his wife, daughter and son-in-law, and a granddaughter, the OC Register said. He was also among 17 COVID-19 coronavirus deaths reported by the Orange County Health Care Agency as of Wednesday.

PODCAST: How to Stay the Coronavirus Plague Briefing Podcast #20 with Daniel Whyte III

Welcome to the How to Stay the Coronavirus Plague Briefing Podcast #20. My name is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International.

2 Samuel 24:25 says, “And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.”

Matthew Henry said, “The building of the altar, and the offering of the proper sacrifices upon it, burnt-offerings to the glory of God’s justice in the execution that had been done, and peace-offerings to the glory of his mercy in the seasonable staying of the process. Hereupon God showed (it is supposed by fire from heaven consuming the sacrifices) that he was entreated for the land, and that it was in mercy that the plague was removed and in token of God’s being reconciled both to prince and people. Christ is our altar, our sacrifice; in him alone we may expect to find favour with God, to escape his wrath, and the sword, the flaming sword, of the cherubim who keep the way of the tree of life.”

As the father of four, I can tell you that all four learned differently and at different rates. Most school settings are not able to individualize. They have to create a “one size fits all” approach out of necessity. Too many students, too few teachers.”

——

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, please understand that you are a sinner and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Please understand that because of your sins, you deserve punishment in hell. Romans 6:23 says “the wages of sin is death…” This is both physical death and spiritual death in hell.

But here is the good news. John 3:16 reads, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

The phrase “For God so loved the world” means that if you are in this world, God loves you no matter what you have done.

The next phrase, “that He gave His only begotten Son” refers to Jesus Christ. He is God’s son who suffered, bled, and died on the cross for your sins and for mine, and He was buried and rose again.

Our next phrase is “that whosoever believeth in Him”. The word “whosoever” means anybody at anytime. The phrase “believeth in Him” means to trust in Him, to depend upon Him, to rely on Him, or to have faith in Him for your salvation.

Our next phrase, “should not perish”, refers to eternal punishment in a place called hell.

And, lastly, the phrase “but have everlasting life” means to live eternally in Heaven with God.

The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved…. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Dear friend, if you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me this simple prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again.

36 And sitting down they watched him there;

51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

Easter and the Plague: Nothing Has Changed About the Easter Story — Just Your Story, Part 6 by Daniel Whyte III

TEXT: Mark 14:27-3

And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.

But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.

And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.

But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.

As I was studying this passage regarding the denial of Peter, I recalled an old song titled “You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me, Lucille,” which was sung by Kenny Rogers. In light of the fact that Peter denied Jesus Christ at a time when Christ needed him the most, I found the lyrics to this song very interesting:

In a bar in Toledo across from the depot
On a bar stool she took off her ring
I thought I’d get closer so I walked on over
I sat down and asked her name

When the drinks finally hit her
She said I’m no quitter, but I finally quit livin’ on dreams
I’m hungry for laughter and here ever after
I’m after whatever the other life brings

In the mirror I saw him, and I closely watched him
I thought how he looked out of place
He came to the woman who sat there beside me
He had a strange look on his face

The big hands were calloused he looked like a mountain
For a minute I thought I was dead
But he started shaking, his big heart was breaking
He turned to the woman and said

You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille
With four hungry children and a crop in the field
I’ve had some bad times, lived through some sad times
But this time your hurting won’t heal
You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille.

The events of Mark 14:27-31 take place on Thursday – the fifth day of Passion Week. Jesus Christ and his disciples are eating the Passover meal – what we call the Last Supper – and Jesus is explaining to His disciples what is about to take place. Earlier on this day, Jesus Christ had told his disciples to prepare an upper room for their Passover meal. They did so, and Jesus and his twelve disciples share the Passover meal together. At this point, Judas has already left to betray Jesus Christ, and Jesus is talking with the remaining eleven disciples about what is going to happen very soon. During the course of this discussion, Jesus predicts Peter’s betrayal.

Of all the disciples, Peter was the most zealous. Peter should have been the one who was the most loyal to Jesus Christ. He made that great statement in Matthew 16:16: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Peter walked on water with Jesus. Peter was the one who said to Jesus, ‘Lord, we have left all for you, where else can we go?’ Peter even had the nerve to challenge Jesus when Jesus told him that He would have to die to fulfill God’s plan.

But despite all this, when the chips were down, when Jesus really needed his friends to back him up, Peter and all of the other disciples, except one, turned and ran away.

After the Last Supper, Jesus Christ and the disciples went out to the Garden of Gethsemane. There, Jesus takes his three closest disciples, Peter, James, and John, and asks them to watch while he went a little further away and prayed. Jesus cries out to God and says, “if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” Of course, in the end, he submits to God’s will. But during the course of the night, while Jesus is praying, he periodically goes back to check on Peter, James, and John. Each time, instead of finding them praying and watching, he finds them sleeping.

Mark 14:37-38 says: “And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour? Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.”

Jesus directly addresses Simon Peter. I believe Jesus is trying to say to Peter: “Look, if you can’t stay awake and watch with me, what are you going to do when my enemies come?”

After another period of prayer, Jesus Christ returns and finds his disciples sleeping again. By this time, he can see his betrayer and a mixed mob of Temple guards and priests approaching the garden. Jesus tells his disciples to get up because the time of his betrayal is at hand.

The Gospel of John tells us that at this point Peter attempts to make good on his promise to stand by Jesus until the very end. Of course, as is often the case with Peter, he goes about it in an impetuous manner which is totally out of the will of God. In this case, Peter draws his sword and swings it at the man nearest him who happens to be a servant of the high priest. This man’s name is Malchus, according to the Gospel of John. As Malchus sees Peter’s sword coming, he naturally attempts to get out of the way, and gets his ear cut off (instead of his head, which is what Peter was likely aiming for).

Jesus reprimands Peter for this action, heals the servant’s ear, and allows himself to be arrested. At this point, all of the disciples cut and run. These same disciples who said that they would never deny Christ, ran away from him at the most critical moment. From examining the Biblical record, we do know that at least three disciples attempted to follow Jesus — they most likely ran off to avoid being arrested themselves at first, and then cautiously followed at a safe distance. We know for sure that Peter is one of these disciples. The Gospel of Mark speaks of a young man who attempted to follow Christ, however he was caught by the guards, left his coat in their hands and ran off. Scholars say that this “young man” was Mark himself. And the Gospel of John speaks of “another disciple” who was “known to the high priest” who followed Jesus into the palace of the high priest. This other disciple was probably John.

Later, after Jesus Christ is arrested and his trial has begun, Peter is standing outside the high priest’s palace, probably waiting for word about what is happening to Jesus. The “other disciple” who was known to the high priest talks with the servant girl at the door and she allows Peter to come in and warm himself at the fire. We know that at this point Peter can see Jesus as he is on trial. But the Bible indicates that Jesus’ back is turned to Peter. This is where the denials begin, as recorded in Mark 14:66-72:

And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest: And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.

But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.

And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them. And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.

But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.

And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.

What can we learn from these passages and the implications of Peter’s denial?

I. Peter’s Denial Began When he Lacked Understanding and Wanted to do Things his Own Way

Peter found himself on the slippery slope of denial when he couldn’t have his own way. We see throughout the Scriptures that Peter was a bold and outspoken member of Jesus’ group. He was rash and full of zeal and enthusiasm no matter what else was going on around him. When we think of Peter, we oftentimes think of the word “impetuous.”

Peter is also a study in contrasts. Peter praised Jesus Christ as the Messiah and then later rebuked Christ for saying that He would have to die. When Jesus told Peter to drop his net into the water, Peter first protested saying, “Lord, we have toiled all night and have caught nothing,” but the next instant, he says, “Whatever you say, Lord, we will do.” Peter begged to walk on the water with Jesus, but then he got scared and cried out for Jesus to save him. And as we saw earlier, Peter could hardly stay awake in the Garden of Gethsemane, but when Jesus’ enemies came, he jumped up and was ready to fight.

Peter had a very prominent place among the apostles. Jesus declared him to be a “rock” and stated, “On this rock, I will build my church…” He called Peter “blessed” for knowing that Jesus was the Messiah, yet a few verses later, Jesus had to rebuke Peter. In Matthew 16, Jesus said “From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.”

Peter did not understand where Jesus’ plan was going and so he wanted to change Jesus’ plan to something that made sense to him. Peter wanted to operate based upon the plan he had in mind.

The sad fact is that so many of us are like Peter. God tells us what He wants us to do, but because we don’t understand God’s plan, we want to go about doing things our own way. The smart thing to do is to trust God, follow His plan, and let God work out everything in the future. But if we get upset because God is not doing things our way, we are on the slippery slope of denying Christ ourselves. That leads to my next point.

II. Peter Did Not Rely on God’s Strength, but His Own.

We see that Peter sometimes did not rely on God’s strength to get him through difficulties. He believed that he could do things on his own. In fact, he and all of the disciples who fled when Jesus was arrested, probably had a smug self-confidence that they (unlike Judas) would be with Jesus until the end. Matthew Henry states in his commentary that when Jesus Christ revealed that one of them would be a traitor, the disciples asked “Is it I? Is it I?” Now, when Jesus Christ revealed that they would all forsake him they say, “It shall never be me.”

At the Last Supper, Peter is confident that he will not betray Jesus or run away from Him when the trials came. Peter probably thought that he was stronger than all the other disciples. But when it came down to the wire, Peter not only ran, but he denied Christ three times.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter failed to follow the example of his Lord. After finding him asleep, Jesus tells Peter, “Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Peter was depending on his fleshly strength instead of asking God for strength as Jesus was doing. Oftentimes, we do the same thing. We “lean to our own understanding” and think we have it all together instead of leaning on God. Jesus Christ leaned on God and He was given the strength to follow through until the end. Peter leaned on his own strength and failed miserably.

In the situations that we face in our daily lives, Jesus’ words to us are the same as they were to Peter. “Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.” Jesus is saying do not depend on your own abilities for you will fail. Instead, stay alert and pray to God for strength to overcome. Just as Jesus overcame in the Garden and submitted His will to God, we can also overcome situations in our lives and find the strength to follow through with God’s plan.

III. The Aftermath of Peter’s Denial

Now, let’s look at what happened after Peter denied the Lord. First the text says, “Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.” Jesus’ prediction came true. Peter had denied the Lord three times. As soon as the last denial was off his lips and the rooster crowed, Jesus’ words came back to Peter. The Gospel of Luke tells us that Jesus, who was standing up above Peter, either on a balcony or by a window, turned and looked at Peter. Now, you may think that Jesus was saying “I told you so”. But I believe Jesus turned to Peter to let him know that even though Peter had denied Jesus and turned his back on Him, Jesus was still not giving up on Peter.

Peter left the high priest’s palace and went out and wept. Luke says he “wept bitterly.” This is in keeping with Peter’s personality. Just as he vehemently denied Christ (cursing and swearing that he did not know Him), so he wept with a broken heart. I do not believe Peter wept because he had been found out. I believe Peter wept because he finally realized how weak and feeble he really was. All of his confident talking had come to no avail. Peter was now a broken man.

The lesson for us today is that we should not wait until we fall flat on our faces to admit our weakness. We should not wait until we hit rock bottom to watch and pray. If you are in a relationship with someone right now, and you are thinking about getting married, but you just know that this person is not the right person for you, don’t go through with a marriage that you know is not God’s will — thinking that you can handle it and that you can “change” him or her after you are married, because it will not work. You’re not as strong as you think you are. Realize that you need God now.

Someone once said that ‘God will break you down before he builds you up.’ God had to break Peter before he could raise him back up. Peter had to realize that he could not do God’s will in his own strength or his own way. Once Peter was broken, he learned to trust in God.

In closing, I would like to say that there were some people who did not run away from Jesus in his darkest hour. We are told in John 19:25, “there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.” We also know that John the apostle was there. These are the people who did not forsake Jesus after his arrest and crucifixion. They were with Him until the very end.

Why did these women and John stand by Jesus? Why didn’t they run away? I simply believe that these women and John had a more complete understanding of the Scripture. They had a fuller understanding of God’s plan and the work that he was accomplishing in the world. Listen to Matthew Henry on this: “We do not find Jesus’ mother wringing her hands, or tearing her hair, or rending her clothes, or making an outcry; but, with a wonderful composure, standing by the cross, and her friends with her. Surely she and they were strengthened by a divine power to this degree of patience; and surely the virgin Mary had a fuller expectation of his resurrection than the rest had, which supported her thus.” Mary and her friends stood by Jesus because they had grasped somehow what Jesus’ death really meant. They had gotten a hold of God’s plan and they were in step with it.

When you get in line with God’s plan, you can have peace in the midst of a storm. You can have joy in the most devastating situations. If a tornado destroys your home, you can say ‘Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?’ and just keep on going. You can have faith when a situation looks hopeless. If you are in line with God, you can remain loyal to Jesus Christ when it seems like things are not going to work out. Thank God for Mary, John and Mary Magdalene who stood by Jesus while He was suffering on the cross. Thank God they did not deny Jesus like Peter did.

BeBe Winans Reveals That He, His Mother, and Brother All Contracted the Coronavirus

BeBe Winans is on the road to recovery after contracting COVID-19. But touching on how contagious the novel coronavirus is, the Gospel singer also revealed that his brother was hospitalized due to the virus, and his mother also was infected.

Winans opened up about his recent diagnosis on SiriusXM’s The Joe Madison Show, detailing that he likely caught the coronavirus while traveling to attend a funeral.

“Sometimes, for some reason, we as a people when we look in and we look at television and various things that’s going on around us, we somehow say, that can’t happen to me for some reason,” he explained. “I don’t know why, but sometimes we believe that, and even myself being cautious, when the outbreak started, I did just a little travel.”

“I was actually in New York and I was like, well, I’m going to Detroit because I had a friend pass and we were having a funeral and just that little travel, I caught it,” Winans added.

Soon after he returned home, Winans began to experience several symptoms associated with COVID-19.

“I just started coughing out of nowhere,” he said, “…and then the fatigue came on, and the chills, and [my] appetite went away.”

Despite having symptoms, Winans called his doctor. It was no use heading to the hospital because he said, “if you’re not in need of a respirator they won’t even take you.”

BeBe Winans is detailing his harrowing experience recovering from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The gospel legend called into SiriusXM’s The Joe Madison Show Thursday, where he revealed he and several of his family members were diagnosed with the respiratory illness.

Winans shared that he contracted the virus from “just a little travel” after taking a quick trip from New York to Detroit for a funeral. However, he admitted that he didn’t think he would be one to catch it.

“We look at television and various things that’s going on around us, we somehow say, that can’t happen to me for some reason. I don’t know why, but sometimes we believe that,” he said.

The 57-year-old said he began to feel symptoms of the virus shortly after coming home.

“I just started coughing out of nowhere and you get concerned. Then the fatigue came on and the chills and appetite went away. And I called my doctor and he said, ‘Okay BeBe, stay home and this is what you do. As you know, you can’t just go to the hospital, and if you’re not in need of a respirator they won’t even take you,’” he explained.

At the same time Winans was battling the virus, his brother had also gone into the hospital with a fever and pneumonia for “four or five days.”

The Grammy-winner’s mother also experienced symptoms for about five days.

Since recovering from the virus, Winans said he is “just grateful” and has been thanking God “because it could have been a different outcome for me and my family.”

“So, I’ve learned to be more grateful for life itself,” he explained. “Forget about homes and automobiles and all these things. You can’t take none of that. That means nothing to you when your health is gone.”

As of April 9, there are at least 429,264 confirmed cases and 14,820 deaths in the United States, according to a New York Times database.
