Tamar Braxton Grateful to Be Alive After Major Health Scare

Christian Post Report – R&B artist Tamar Braxton arrives at the 56th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, California, January 26, 2014.

While Tamar Braxton was hoping to win her first Grammy Award Monday for her song “If I don’t Have You,” the singer is grateful to be alive after a series of blood clots almost cost her her life last year.

The 38-year-old “Calling All Lovers” singer and co-host of “The Real” talk show battled with multiple pulmonary embolisms last year that resulted in the removal of one of her ribs. When the doctor told Braxton about her surgery, she literally thought her life was over.

“I didn’t even believe the doc when she told me I had multiple blood clots,” Braxton told Yahoo! on Friday. “I was really thinking to myself, ‘oh my God, I am gonna die.'”

While Braxton spoke about being in excruciating pain because of her condition, she spoke about gaining strength from her 2-year-old son, Logan, and husband, Vincent Herbert.

“I was in the hospital for maybe eight days I didn’t see my son,” she told Yahoo!. “Vince arranged for me to go downstairs for a few hours and play with him.”

Even though her health is now stable following her surgery, Braxton admitted, “I am worried about my health because it makes you paranoid.”

On her WEtv reality television show, “Tamar & Vince,” Braxton let fans see the details of her health struggles. Still, the Christian singer exalted God in the process of it all.

“The moment when you think you in control, it’s like God comes and slaps the control out your mouth,” an emotional Braxton said on her show in an episode that aired last month. “‘OK, God — I got the message.’ … So terrible.”

Braxton’s health scare began in November when she was rushed to the emergency room during a “Dancing With the Stars” dress rehearsal, and doctors thought she had pneumonia. While the R&B singer competing on the celebrity dance competition returned to the show against her doctors’ wishes, she later had to report back to the ER where she learned that there were blood clots in her lungs known as pulmonary embolisms.

While doctors prescribed blood thinners for Braxton, they were concerned about her chest pains and shortness of breath. Through testing they discovered that Braxton had a condition called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, which is a group of disorders that take place when blood vessels or nerves are compressed.

The strenuous activity due to Braxton’s constant dance rehearsals, multiple reality television shows, music tour and talk show caused a strain on the muscles around her rib cage, which led to the removal of one of her ribs. The singer later invited her cardiologist, Dr. Mary Ann McLaughlin from Mount Sinai Hospital, and vascular surgeon Dr. Allan Tulloch to “The Real” in December to explain the healing she calls miraculous.

“Thoracic Outlet Syndrome for Tamar is essentially because she’s an athlete. So athletes who use their upper extremeties a lot can develop the musle that attaches to the first rib,” the vascular surgeon said on the show. “It can actually get pulled up and compress the vein. What happens is you get a blood clot and unfortunately you have a pulmonary embolism as a result. So even though she was treated for that pulmonary embolism, she really had to have that rib removed in order to remove the obstruction of her vein.”

Michelle Williams Defends Falling During Destiny’s Child Performance

Christian Post Report – Singer Michelle Williams arrives at the 2015 BET Awards in Los Angeles, California, June 28, 2015.

Some people are not letting singer Michelle Williams forget a 2004 Destiny’s Child performance on BET where she took a tumble, but the gospel artist is refusing to be bullied for the gaffe.

Popular radio personality Charlamagne Tha God from New York City’s syndicated morning show “The Breakfast Club” re-posted a clip of Williams tripping and falling while performing over a decade ago.

“I love @RealMichelleW with all my heart but this is forever funny,” he wrote to over 1 million Twitter followers. “You see how Jesus got her right back up tho??”

Williams, 35, defended herself and pointed out that even in the blunder that has gone viral, she kept dancing right alongside former group members Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Rowland.

“No one ever gives me credit for getting back up either,” Williams responded. “I didn’t miss nan choreography! Y’all are jerks!”

As someone who has overcome issues with self-esteem, the singer previously told Sister 2 Sister magazine she felt warranted in responding to her cyber bullies from time to time.

“I think the cyber bullying is just stupid because the majority of the time most of the cyber bullies just type it, but when they see you on the street, they’re not gonna say it to your face,” Michelle told Sister 2 Sister. “Every now and then, depending on what day you catch me, if you say something out of line to me — because I don’t want you to be ignorant, I want you to be knowledgeable — I will spit something back to you that’s factual and I’ll say, ‘God bless you’ at the end.”

Last year, Williams spoke to The Christian Post about overcoming insecurities that led her to write the song “Believe in Me.”

“People might tell you ‘Oh my gosh you’re great, you have a great calling on your life,’ or ‘Oh your hair is so pretty today,'” Williams told CP. “… If I come to you and give you a compliment, it probably should be confirmation of what you already know. I just did not believe, I didn’t think I was as good as other people around me.”

For Williams, the beauty of freedom is more about her learning to let go of other people’s opinions of her.

“Where you’re no longer looking for permission to do your calling, you’re no longer looking for permission to be who you are,” Williams told CP about her definition of freedom. “You might be a goofy outgoing person, and people probably can’t handle your personality. But hey that’s the way God made you.”

Kirk Franklin Says Grammy Win Doesn’t Define Him

Christian Post Report – Gospel artist Kirk Franklin holds his awards for Best Gospel Album and Best Gospel Song “Hello Fear” at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, California, February 12, 2012.

Kirk Franklin won his eighth Grammy Award on Monday but is not letting the high honor define who he is.

The 46-year-old gospel music artist, songwriter and producer won an award for Best Gospel Performance/Song with, “Wanna Be Happy?” In accepting the award, the veteran gospel music star brought fellow nominees Anthony Brown, Travis Greene, Jonathan McReynolds and Brian Courtney Wilson to the stage with him.

“I’m so proud of all of my gospel music family today at the Grammys,” Franklin wrote on Twitter. “It celebrates what we do, but never defines who we are.”

Although Franklin received an honor for his song “Wanna Be Happy” featured on his “Losing My Religion” album released late last year, he admitted to having anxiety about releasing the record. The artist was worried that it may not be received well.

“To be transparent, that’s what took me so long to do the album. A lot of it was fear, and then I really began to learn that spiritually fear is a form of pride,” Franklin revealed to The Christian Post last year. “It was pride that I would never be able to live up to ‘I Smile.’ I would tend to just kind of stay away, because I was scared of not being accepted like I was with ‘I Smile.'”

In a 2014 interview with CP, Franklin made it clear that he was not creating music to receive any accolades.

“I’m always trying to find innovative ways to be able to keep God famous,” Franklin said. “For all the properties I’m involved in, that’s been my agenda. I think that sometimes we have compromised quality content for the fear of Christianity and I think that they both can co-exist.”

The musician seems to have mastered the art of creating quality gospel music for two decades and insisted that the most important quality in the music is sincerity.

“It should reflect wherever we are and our personal spiritual growth with God. If that’s not our top priority, then our artform is going to be very shallow,” Franklin said. “It should not be just for the sole purpose of the artform itself..if it’s that, we’ll suffer. We have to make sure people can feel the sincerity of our own testimony and our own journey so they know this is something that is really real for us.”

He believes gospel music should be in tune with the culture of the world instead of focusing solely on the church.

“People don’t live at church, they live in the real world. So music has to reflect that how people live, what they’re doing as they go through their trials in life,” he previously told CP. “So I just hope and pray that we’re always able to tap into that and be that voice for people.”

Is Kanye West’s ‘The Life Of Pablo’ Inspired by the Apostle Paul?

Christian Post Report – Recording artist Kanye West performs during the closing ceremony for the 2015 Pan Am Games at Pan Am Ceremonies Venue.

Kanye West’s seventh studio album is more than just his self-proclaimed gospel music record, his album may have been inspired by the Bible’s Apostle Paul.

The 38-year-old outspoken rap mogul whose latest album is called The Life of Pablo, took to Twitter to reveal that he was inspired by Paul, whose name translates to Pablo in Spanish.

“Paul … The most powerful messenger of the first century…,” West tweeted Saturday. “Now we stand here 20 centuries later… Because he was a traveler…”

West went on to draw comparison between Paul’s life and his own.

“He was a learned man not of the original sect so he was able to take the message to the rest of the world…He was saved from persecution due to his Roman citizenship…,” he tweeted. “I have the right to speak my voice…Please forgive the profanity and give hugs and blessings to my brother Kirk for standing by me…”

The rapper called for people to dance in the streets and wrote, “I am consumed by my purpose to help the world.”

West has talked about his new album being a profanity-laced gospel record, and he tapped Kirk Franklin, one of the biggest names in gospel music, for the song “Ultra Light Beams.” He previously told Big Boy Radio about a conversation with Franklin about his record being gospel music.

“When I was sitting in the studio with Kirk, Kirk Franklin, and we’re just going through it, I said this is a gospel album, with a whole lot of cursing on it, but it’s still a gospel album,” West said in the interview on Big Boy Radio. “The gospel according to Ye. It’s not exactly what happened in the Bible, but it’s this story idea of Mary Magdalene becoming Mary.”

The rapper went on to reveal that he believed God, his late mother Donda West and his wife Kim Kardashian’s late father Robert Kardashian Sr. were helping him finish his album.

“I’m only doing one percent, two percent of the work and God is doing the rest of the work. My mom… had Teddy Riley change his flight and come back to the studio,” West said. “Robert Kardashian is making sure that all the deals is getting done. He’s still doing deals for controversial black people from up in heaven.”

Franklin, who can be heard praying on West’s “Ultra Light Beams” has defended his decision to work with West after receiving some criticism.

“I will not turn my back on my brother. I will love him, prayerfully grow with him,” Franklin wrote on Instagram. “However long he’ll have me, and however long the race takes. To a lot of my Christian family, I’m sorry he’s not good enough, Christian enough, or running at your pace…and as I read some of your comments, neither am I.”

In Birthplace of Mexico’s Drug War, Pope Tells Youth ‘Jesus Would Never Ask Us to Be Assassins’

Christian Post Report – People take photographs of Pope Francis (C) during a meeting with youths at the Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon stadium in Morelia, Mexico, February 16, 2016.

Speaking under tight security in the birthplace of Mexico’s drug war Tuesday, Pope Francis urged a sea of young people to choose Christ over the lure of gang life, warning that “Jesus would never ask us to be assassins.”

Former Mexican President Felipe Calderon launched the country’s current war against organized crime by sending troops to his home state Michoacan in December 2006. And it has remained rife with violence, according to Vice News.

At a stadium rally in Morelia, the capital of Michoacan on Tuesday, Reuters reports that Pope Francis had been under tight security due to scattered outburst of violence in recent months. More than 100,000 people have been killed in Mexico’s drug war over the last decade as rival gangs fight over territory and smuggling routes to the United States, according to the report.

In an apparent bid to offer hope to the faithful and vulnerable in his first visit to Mexico, Pope Francis told the youth that they are the “wealth” of both Mexico and the Church while highlighting the dangers of the drug trade.

“You are the wealth of Mexico, you are the wealth of the Church. I understand that often it is difficult to feel your value when you are continually exposed to the loss of friends or relatives at the hands of the drug trade, of drugs themselves, of criminal organizations that sow terror,” he said.

“It is hard to feel the wealth of a nation when there are no opportunities for dignified work, no possibilities for study or advancement, when you feel your rights are being trampled on, which then leads you to extreme situations. It is difficult to appreciate the value of a place when, because of your youth, you are used for selfish purposes, seduced by promises that end up being untrue,” said Francis.

Youths cheer during a meeting with Pope Francis (not pictured) at the Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon stadium in Morelia, Mexico, February 16, 2016.

“I will never tire of saying, you are the wealth of Mexico. Don’t think I am saying this because I am good, or I because I have concise ideas about it; no dear friends, it is not like that. I say this to you and I am convinced of it. And do you know why? Because, like you, I believe in Jesus Christ. And it is He who continually renews in me this hope, it is He who continually renews my outlook. It is He who continually invites me to a conversion of heart. Yes, my friends, I say this because in Jesus I have found the One who is able to bring out the best in me,” he said.

“Hand in hand with him, we can move forward, hand in hand with Him we can begin again and again, hand in hand with Him we find the strength to say: it is a lie to believe that the only way to live, or to be young, is to entrust oneself to drug dealers or others who do nothing but sow destruction and death,” he added.

The pontiff ended his speech, declaring: “Jesus would never ask us to be assassins; rather, He calls us to be disciples. He would never send us out to death, but rather everything in Him speaks of life. A life in a family, life in a community; families and communities for the good of society. You are the wealth of this country, and when you doubt this, look to Jesus, He who destroys all efforts to make you useless or mere instruments of other people’s ambitions.”

Francis, who is the first Latin American pope, is expected to travel to some of the poorest and most violent corners of Mexico in a six-day tour of that country, according to Reuters.

In 2014, President Enrique Pena Nieto’s government sent in the army and forged an uneasy alliance with vigilante groups in Michoacan after a bitter conflict erupted between the groups and the powerful Knights Templar drug gang. That same year, dozens of trainee teachers were abducted and apparently massacred by a drug gang in league with corrupt police in the neighboring state of Guerrero.

Some 200,000 Catholics are expected to cross from El Paso, Texas, into Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, on Wednesday to see Pope Francis in a massive pilgrimage.

Should Christians Watch ‘Deadpool’? 7 Questions to Ask

Christian Post Report – Actor Ryan Reynolds arrives for the premiere of “Deadpool” in New York, February 8, 2016.

“Deadpool” is a gory new flick that’s breaking records at the box office. The 20th Century Fox film is the movie studio’s biggest debut ever, and had the biggest R-rated opening weekend in history, surpassing 2013’s “The Matrix Reloaded” by raking in $132.7 million from Friday to Sunday.

Before deciding whether to see the grisly, sexually-charged new film, however, a recent desiringGod post by Phillip Holmes asks Christians to ponder these seven questions about nudity.

1. When Will I Tear Out My Eye, If Not Now?

Watching nudity isn’t okay, says Holmes, explaining that Jesus said those who look at others with lustful intent have already committed adultery. “Seeing naked women on the screen — or naked men — causes a man, or woman, to sin with their minds and their desires, and often with their bodies.” Based on Matthew 5:28–29, he adds, “If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away.”

2. Am I Longing to See God?

“The defilement of the mind and heart by watching nudity dulls the heart’s ability to see and enjoy God,” says Holmes. The desiringGod writer challenges believers to watch nudity, then praise God and see if they “enjoy Him more.”

3. Do I Care About the Souls of the Nudes?

He explains that when believers embrace nudity in entertainment they are ” … implicitly endorsing the sin of the women who sell themselves this way …,” and are ignoring God’s call for women to adorn themselves in respectable apparel with modesty and self-control (1 Timothy 2:9).

4. Would I Be Glad If My Daughter Played This Role?

When it comes to watching nudity, he says that most Christians are hypocrites — their watching implies that nudity is okay, while in their hearts they know that they would not want someone they cared about — a daughter, wife, husband, boyfriend or girlfriend — to play the role.
