Christian Monks, Students Refuse to Flee 4th-Century Monastery Near ISIS-Controlled Mosul; ‘God Protects Us’

Christian Post Report – A monk stands next to graffiti sprayed by vandals on a wall at the entrance to the Latrun Monastery near Jerusalem September 4, 2012.

Three monks and six students have taken refuge in the ancient monastery of Mar Mattai in northern Iraq, just 12 miles from the Islamic State-occupied Mosul City, not willing to flee, and expressing “their faith that this is a secure place.”

Erbil’s Chaldean Archbishop Bashar Warda said a small unit of the Kurdish military is protecting the nine Christians but that’s not why they believe they are safe in the shrine, also known as St. Matthew’s Monastery.

“There is a kind of feeling that they cannot express but they at least feel relaxed in a way that even if, God forbid, something would happen, they are in safe hands,” Warda told Catholic News Agency.

Many people in nearby villages have fled as the Islamic State terror group, also known as ISIS or ISIL, now maintains control over much of the region.

ISIS, an offshoot of al-Qaeda, is seeking to establish a caliphate in the Levant region and beyond, and is fast expanding its control in Syria and Iraq. The Christian minority is one of its main targets.

An international coalition led by the United State has been launching airstrikes on ISIS targets. “We can see the battles and the airstrikes from here in front of us, especially at night. The sky lights up at night, but we of course are not scared. God protects us,” Yousif Ibrahim, one of three monks, told USA Today.

Situated atop Mount Alfaf in Nineveh Plains, it is recognized as one of the oldest Christian monasteries in existence. Currently maintained by the Syriac Orthodox Church, the monastery has a magnificent library with considerable collection of Syriac Christian manuscripts.

Sahar Karaikos, one of six students at the monastery, believes in the wisdom of his teachers. “We are not scared, because our teachers give us a feeling of peace here, but we know we are on the front lines, and in seconds the Islamic State could be here,” he was quoted as saying. “I don’t even want to think or speak about the destruction the Islamic State would cause if they took our monastery.”

Last June, ISIS seized the nation’s second-largest city of Mosul in an offensive. Two months later, the Sunni terror group also captured surrounding areas.

ISIS is destroying the Christian heritage in areas under its control, but Archbishop Warda said the terrorists have not been able to destroy the people’s faith. “They’ve destroyed walls and historical sites, but they were unable to destroy the faith of the community. And that’s the good news. That our people are strong enough to leave everything behind and just stay Christians.”

ISIS has executed 2,618 people, including 1,511 civilians, since last June, when it declared its “Caliphate,” according to the U.K.-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which documented at least 464 executions over the last two months alone.

The overall executions included those of 23 children and 32 women. The executions were carried out mostly by beheading, shooting or stoning. ISIS has also executed 139 of its own members for “exceeding the limits in religion and spying for foreign countries,” mostly after they were trying to go back to their homes.

Prophetesses Talk Training Protégés to Prophesy On Lifetime Show ‘Preach’

'Preach' (Photo: Karolina Wojtasik)

Christian Post Report – (L to R) Linda Roark, Taketa Williams, Kelly Crews and Belinda Scott star in Lifetime’s all-new docu-series Preach, premiering Friday, June 5, at 10pm ET/PT on Lifetime.

Before coming under the tutelage of the prophetess Dr. Belinda Scott, Hadassah Elders was embedded in the Nation of Islam. Now, she is busy honing her gift as a young prophetess in the body of Christ on Lifetime’s newest docu-series, “Preach.”

Scott, a Cleveland Heights, Ohio based prophetess, told The Christian Post that she has mentored an estimated 1,500 women. Now that cameras have followed her helping Elders walk in a prophetic calling after growing up in the Muslim faith, Scott insists she is following simply following the Bible.

“I believe that as an elder statesman in the Lord, an elder woman in the Lord, in Timothy it says to first train up a young woman,” Scott told CP. “We’re just following Bible principles.”

The prophetess believes Elders has a great testimony that can impact others.

“She’s been transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit and confesses Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior,” Scott told CP. “She received the Holy Ghost and now she is seeking to do a thing for other women. I really feel that is something that is monumental.”

In the first episode of “Preach,” Scott assured Elders that she was ready to lay hands on people after praying for her protégé and laying a prayer shawl on her. In a similar way, the prophetess known as Dr. Taketa Williams also shared her anointing with her protégé Rebecca Hairston on the debut episode of the show when she wiped her sweat with a cloth and put it over the face of her trainee.

Williams heads a school of prophecy and told The Christian Post that she can impart her spiritual gifts to others.

“Paul told Timothy in the scripture, stir up the gifts of God that was given to you by the laying on of hands. A gift, can Biblically be imparted unto others,” Williams told CP. “The gifts of the spirit, which one of them is prophecy, can be transferred and released upon another believer. That is our biblical foundation.”

Scott insists, however, that it is only God who can call somebody to be a prophet and she is only put into a position to help guide people in that gift.

“When you yield to God by way of the Holy Spirit, He is the one who gives us this calling and the mandate. No man can give another person a gift from God,” Scott told CP. “God has to birth that gift, or call that individual whether its from their youth or that gift was laying dormant. Even before they were saved they might have had that gift but once the Holy Spirit comes in, he illuminates that gift, he touches that gift and that gift begins to operate.”

“Preach” airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on Lifetime.

Kurds Pay Tribute to American Keith Broomfield Who Died Fighting ISIS; Line Streets for Funeral Procession, Vow Revenge for Death

Christian Post Report – A Kurdish boy waves a Kurdish flag during celebrations after it was reported that Kurdish forces took control of the Syrian town of Kobani, in Sheikh Maksoud neighborhood of Aleppo, January 27, 2015. Kurdish forces battled Islamic State fighters outside Kobani on Tuesday, a monitoring group said, a day after Kurds said they took full control of the northern Syrian town following a four-month battle.

Hundreds of Kurds lined a funeral procession for American Keith Broomfield in northern Syria before turning his body over to his family at a Turkish border crossing.

The Daily Mail and the Facebook page “The Lions of Rojava,” which promotes and pays tribute to foreign fighters against ISIS, posted photos of the Kurdish military procession.

Broomfield, 36, was believed to be killed on June 3 in northern Syria in a military engagement with ISIS forces. His parents and several family members have all said that Broomfield was “led by the Lord” to fight ISIS and “believed in opposing evil.” Broomfield paid his own way to link up with Kurdish forces in the fight against ISIS in February.

“The freedom loving people on this Earth thank you for your sacrifice and will never forget you,” declared a post on “The Lions of Rojava Facebook page. “While ISIS fights for death and slavery our warrior fought for life and freedom!”

A description of the page, in part, reads: “Join YPG [Kurdish military forces] The Lions of Rojava Unit and send ISIS terrorists to hell and save humanity.”

American Christian Keith Broomfield was killed in June 2015 while fighting alongside the Kurdish Protection Unit (YPG) against ISIS in Syria.

Pictures on the page show Kurdish forces following Bloomfield’s casket and lining the streets to pay tribute to the American. Young children are seen holding photos of Broomfield along the street and near his casket. Many in the crowd held up the “V” sign with their hands for “victory,” and applauded his sacrifice.

Broomfield is believed to be the first American who has died as a volunteer fighter against ISIS.

Kurdish forces vowed to avenge his death and promised to chase ISIS “from our land to the gates of hell,” while praising the Massachusetts native as a “martyr.”

In a press conference echoing Broomfield’s mother’s comments previously reported by The Christian Post, Broomfield’s father, Tom, said his son “really felt led by the Lord to go over there.”

“The persecution the Kurdish people are facing, some of it is pretty gruesome,” Broomfield’s father described. “The attacks on the kids and just the brutality from ISIS — that really troubled him.”

“I can’t just sit back here and watch,” said Broomfield’s dad about his son’s reason for going to Syria to fight with the Kurdish forces against ISIS. Broomfield’s brother added that he believed Keith’s decision “was shocking,” adding that he “didn’t agree with it at first.”

Before leaving his home in the U.S. to fight against ISIS, Broomfield was a production manager at his family’s manufacturing firm.

The U.S. State Department confirmed his death on Wednesday and takes no official position on American fighters volunteering to fight against ISIS in the Middle East. The State Department has been in contact with Broomfield’s family but added no further comment, only saying they are receiving “assistance.” The FBI however, is asking Americans to provide any information on citizens believed to be fighting for ISIS.

In a video reportedly to have been released by Kurdish forces, Broomfield says: “I’m here to be a part of the movement, do whatever I can to assist that.”

“With everything that’s going on, it seems like the right thing to do,” he added.

American Christian Man Killed by ISIS in Syria Fighting With Kurds ‘Smiled’ at Muslims Hostile to His Faith in Jesus, Says Pastor

American Christian Keith Broomfield was killed in June 2015 while fighting alongside the Kurdish Protection Unit (YPG) against ISIS in Syria.

Christian Post Report – American Christian Keith Broomfield was killed this week while fighting ISIS alongside the Kurds Syria and his pastor says he treated Muslims hostile to his faith there by “smiling” at them and making a cross over his heart.

Pastor Gary Moritz of Twin City Baptist Church in Massachusetts where Broomfield, 36, used to attend told The Christian Post that Broomfield “wanted to serve the Lord” and traveled to Turkey and Syria in order to help the Kurds.

“The Kurds have been calling him the first Christian martyr to fight against ISIS,” said Moritz.

He wasn’t sure what Broomfield would do when he got there and the last time they spoke was in February via email.

“He [told me] he was keeping his Bible open and walking around. He couldn’t speak the language. He said it’s amazing what happens [with the locals] as they either want to know more about the Bible, or you have a devout Muslim who gets totally angry,” said Moritz to CP.

Moritz spent time with Broomfield praying about the decision before he finally left for Turkey.

The pastor described Broomfield as a dedicated Christian and said he found Christ after doing jail time. Broomfield regularly attended church service and was heavily involved.

“Keith definitely had some [demons] from his past, but he also focused mainly on his future and how he can impact the world for Christ,” said Moritz.

News of Broomfield’s death at the hands of ISIS was “heart wrenching” for Moritz who said he now understands why Broomfield felt called to help the Kurds.

“That was the purpose God had for him,” continued Moritz. “Our church definitely looks to him as a patriot. To stand up for the Christian faith and to fight against the evil that’s coming against our countries and other countries. He was willing to make a difference.”

Broomfield left for his journey that ended in Syria four months ago, according to his family. His death was confirmed by the U.S. State Department on Wednesday.

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Kobani, Syria on Thursday waving flags and applauding while Broomfield’s body was delivered over the Turkey border.

His parents learned of Keith’s death on Tuesday, according to NBC.

“I went to my kids and I just cried with them about it,” said Keith’s father Tom Broomfield to NBC. “It’s a tough think but we have peace about it.”

Broomfield is the first U.S. citizen killed while fighting with the Kurds against ISIS.

1,500-Y-O Christian Church Discovered on Road Near Jerusalem; Experts Say Site Was an Area of ‘Intense Activity’

1500 Year-old Church Discovered Near Jerusalem (Photo: Screengrab/ Israel Antiquities Authority)

Christian Post Report – Road workers discovered a 1500 year-old church from the Byzantine era while expanding the highway that connects Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

A 1,500-year-old Christian church filled with artifacts from the Byzantine era was discovered by road workers expanding Israel’s main highway that connects Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

The church includes a four-leafed clover shaped baptismal font. Fragments of red-colored plastic which indicate that the sanctuary walls had been decorated with frescoes were also uncovered, according to Israel Antiquities Authority.

The centuries-old sanctuary was discovered at a Byzantine period rest stop on a road said to be from the Roman period.

“Along this road, which was apparently already established in the Roman period, other settlements and road stations have previously been discovered that served those traveling the route in ancient times,” said Annette Nagar, director of the excavation on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority.

Rooms that were most likely used as dwelling quarters are located next to the church. The sanctuary features a white mosaic floor and a side chapel 21 feet long and 11 feet wide.

Various artifacts including oil lamps, special glass vessels and marble fragments were found at the site along with a water source – the ‘Ain Naqa’a seep spring. Experts say the artifacts point to the site seeing intense activity.

“The road station and its church were built in the Byzantine period beside the ancient road leading between Jerusalem and the coastal plain,” said Nagar. “This road station ceased to be used at the end of the Byzantine period, although the road beside which it was built was renewed and continued to be in use until modern times.”

Pablo Betzer, Israel Antiquities Authority’s district archaeologist for Judah confirmed that the findings have been documented and will be studied.

He also stated that the road station and church remnants will be covered in order to preserve them for future generations.

  • “Real Housewives of Orange County” star Tamra Judge returns to the show in season Christian Post Report – 10

Two weeks after being accused of faking her Christian conversion to secure her spot on hit reality TV show “Real Housewives of Orange County,” star Tamra Judge has hit back at her critics insisting that her conversion is genuine and that it has completely changed her life.

“What’s so funny is there’s so many fake stories that go out there in the press,” Judge, who accepted Christ as her savior roughly one month ago, told The Christian Post in a recent phone interview. “I think in the past six months I’ve felt like a new person but it’s just one of those things where I wanted to make it right with the Lord and I knew the journey I was on. I’m not saying like, I’m perfect and I’m not saying I’m at church every single Sunday. I try to go every Sunday, I’m joining a Bible study … as you know, your mindset changes [after being baptized].”

Judge’s emotional baptism will air on the hit Bravo TV show, currently in its Christian Post Report – 10th season, in coming months as part of the season finale. Her life-changing decision to be born again came during what she said was a very difficult time in her life, after a woman at her Cut Fitness gym invited her to go to church.

“I was never baptized as a kid, and I was never brought up in church and I haven’t raised my kids in the church, it was something that was very foreign to me,” she shared. “When I was going through everything I was going through, I was at work one day and this woman came up to me at my studio … She goes ‘would you like to go to church with me?’ and I said ‘yes.'”

She continued: “So I took my kids to church and [my husband] Eddie went with me and my life just kind of changed, it was very powerful. And I think that with religion and accepting the Lord into your life and your heart it’s a personal journey.”

The “RHOC” follows the drama-filled lives of six, Orange County women, whose pampered lifestyles and endless bickering captivates viewers (2.7 million during its peak last season) every year.

During season 9, the 44-year-old mother of four, who is just days away from celebrating her second wedding anniversary to her husband Eddie, was cast by viewers as the show villain due to her frequent clashes with fellow castmates. In one dramatic scene, an enraged Judge threatened to cut all ties with every one of her co-stars, who accused her of gossiping and backstabbing during an intense confrontation in Bali. The Bravo TV star says she
